A Goth Music playlist for baby bats

- Hello! These songs serve as a little introduction to gothic rock for new goths out there. I included some of my favorites, I hope you enjoy them!
Remember, for those who wish to call themselves "goth", please I recommend to educate yourself first with the overall history of the subculture, but most importantly the music since the subculture derives mainly from the music itself. If we keep calling ourselves "goth" without knowing about how it came to be or what bands helped kindle the movement, sadly with time the subculture will completely disappear or get mixed up with other genres.

Now this is music education. Just what everyone needs. Like the sound of goth rock? Here's a playlist of fundamentals you need to know. boom. There should be one of these for every music genre.
This playlist's Description made me wanna look up more info and i LOVE what im reading! its essentialy about being yourself and not letting people's judgment get to you and just being toward the darker side of things based on what im reading, originateing in the 1970s too (more recognized in the 1990s based on what im reading)! so please correct me if im wrong but i LOVE this! the fation, the Music, its amazing!
im also reading that is common for Goths to have a very poor outlook on life but its not always the case, whitch i do have a hard time seeing the good things in life But i dont hate life so idk if i would fit, Im learning abt all the Alt Communities and im loving them all a lot! all so interesting and sutch good music too!

One of my favourite things about the goth community is how welcoming it is to baby bats!! It’s been so great to immerse myself in a community that seems so happy to have me there 😭😭
i started getting into goth again after leaving black metal and it was a HUGE difference all black metal fans hate eachother
@@damienlikestoes I like music (from extreme metal to ambient) just for the music, because if I should start considering the people who listens to it, I could end up abandoning music too...
I always thought the community had a high degree of gatekeeping, especially in the 90s.

Do you like the black metal sound better?
@@damienlikestoes i hate bm fans sm, i love bm tho but they should stop being some loser elitists
I know their is a stima of racism in the Goth world as 55 yo blk man I been listening to Goth since I was 18 yo. I got laughed at by my own race of people cuz they thought I was weird. The love of music has no color . Post punk to Goth wave sith wave punk Rock , New wave. Grunge Rock , Acid Rock, progressive Rock , Purple Rock ( RIP Prince) j can keep going. Love of music has no color or Race.
You are absolutely right! My respect goes for those who resist and fight against racism.
Real!!! Idc what race sexuality or gender anyone is you can be whatever style of music you want
Sir, I'm Black and I love goth music and I live in a tropical country in the tropic of capricorn. So you're not alone.
@@saimonferro That's what up bro.
A black girl here also a fan of rock! We're definitely growing in numbers nowadays
I grew up with two not necessarily goth, but definitely alternative parents. Big old creepy farmhouse, lot of legends about spirits and monsters around our land, human skulls in the house (my dad used them for teaching dental students), alternative music style, lots of black clothing, antiques everywhere...very Addams-esque. My dad introduced me to Siouxsie Sioux and the Banshees when I was younger and I've always been comfortable with darker themes and chords to my music. For people who have no history with the goth subculture, this playlist is an awesome intro, and definitely sounds like the stuff my dad and I would cruise around to.
Thank you! Plus your backstory is really cool!
Spooky
I know that I'm hella late but yooo man that's sick!
What a cool upbringing you had.

You're goth by proxy ;)
I'm a baby bat, and this playlist is such a banger. Thank you for properly introducing me to the world of Goth music.
I think I am going to become one. This music pretty good.
It’s harder to find emo ones, since panic at the disco and mcr are all over it, and a few others too that technically aren’t the emo sub genre.
I’m gonna think about making my own, for little angels (baby bats but emo version)

@@pottersky1 she likes some goth, not this playlist though
**me, a baby bat, silently adding these to my playlist**
Hi, I hope you're doing well and I know building a wardrobe as a goth is difficult but keep it up, exactly a year ago I was a baby bat who would watch "it's black Friday" to help me and it's been a year but I still call myself a baby bat because Im not exactly there yet
if it’s hard for you to get into new music here’s a tip: when you’re working on something and you have music playing in the background, start with 2 or 3 songs you already know and like. Have the new stuff queued up to play after the songs you know. when you’re working, you’ll zone out on the music a little and it’ll be easier to listen to it and enjoy it
I listed to this playlist whilst tidying up after baking a cake. I had only heard of a few songs from it before listening. Now I really like this playlist. It's one of my favourite playlist if not my favourite playlist :)
OMG this is exactly what I do !!! I find it easier to warm up to new music when I am maybe performing another task or programming so that listening is not the only thing I am doing, and then I also slowly learn to hear all the nuances in the song that makes it more and more enjoyable over time!!!
I stand by this. Half of the songs on this playlist I really liked, the other half not as much but I still enjoyed it. After replaying this over and over for days, I fell in love with the others. Been looking into their bands too, it's crazy how I didn't really like them as much at first.
So happy to see these playlists and that what I'm hearing referred to as "Trad Goth" enjoying a revival (thank you, "Wednesday," I guess?). I'm so old that we didn't even call ourselves "goth" and even resented when the label started to stick - being labeled was exactly what we rebelled against after "punk rock" was the blanket phrase the older generations used to describe anything contrary to "classic rock". But hey, we all need to identify as something these days and I'm happy to be an O.G. (Original Goth). Welcome all Baby Bats, we've kept the crypt cold for you.
"we've kept the crypt old for you" you're so funny
"We've kept the crypt cold for you" i love fhat man
Speaking of 'Thank you Wednesday, I guess', I find it cool, but definitely odd that all the young bats in my area are suddenly aware of The Cramps, thanks to that dance scene.
As a young person who getting into alt fashion and music, thank you :D
@@GJEKSBLOOP Don't thank me, thank the person who put this playlist up :)
Honestly, I call myself y'allternative. I'm from Mississippi, have an accent, and wear a mix of goth, emo, pastel and scene, depending on my mood.

@@dearbennetthey are synth-pop/new wave, part of the new romantics, as a goth I love them along with bands like visage :)
Omg Baby Bats is such a cute term for people embracing their Inner goth.
Just starting to get into goth culture rn. I’ve always loved “darker” music, I didn’t feel comfortable calling myself a goth because I always felt like I was “faking” by not dressing like a stereotypical goth (my main style is streetwear). But after reading the comments, I feel validated 🥹🖤
I’m not a goth (or at least I don’t think I am) but I’ve always found myself drawn to music like this. My mom would constantly play Depeche Mode when I was younger, so I’m pretty sure that’s why. Anything synthy with reverb and an overall darker tone always sounds amazing to me. It’s just so magical ❤️
@“𝖘𝖊𝖉𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖉_𝖕𝖗𝖎𝖓𝖈𝖊𝖘𝖘” I honestly find myself relating to goths, the more I think about it. Maybe I am a little goth? Idk lol
you dont need to dress the part to be apart of the culture because its music based! i like to describe this using metalheads because most people now realize you can dress is pink and lace and still be a metalhead, same with being a goth :)
if your drawn to goth music and you listen to it you are technically goth! its a music based subculture :)!
@@BLACK_5ABBATH I guess I have an inner goth then!
@@suuujji well shit, I guess that makes me a technical goth XD

OOOH, I’ve always wanted to be goth. But I kept hearing you need to listen to the music, but I didn’t know what goth music would be considered as, so thank you for this
Sameeeeee
I think it doesnt really matter. While yes the music is a big part of being goth, the style is there too. I love goth music, but I like screamo more (NOT EMO, if they have an emo accent I just can't. But things like Riot, or sex metal barbie) Goth is more than just the music, but I'm glad there are things out here so newer folks can get a better taste of our music! Just remember it't not a necessity 🖤
@@evonieshores3124 thank you, I’ve found it’s not exactly my cup of tea. But I still love the style and stuff, I kept seeing people saying liking the music is necessary for it
@@speyederdreams1747 and thats okay, you listen to what you like! Just because you're goth/want to be doesn't mean you have to like everything about it, you know? The music is not necessary, at all. Afterall we aren't all the same person, and we all have our different likes and dislikes
Not necessarily! For example there is this thing called "mall goth" in which it's mostly based on the goth style instead of the music so if you'd like you could take a look at it ^^
So happy to see Plastique Noir included not once, but twice! They're brazilian just like me, and this fills me with pride 🖤🦇

Welcome baby bats to the alternative. :-) I was an old punk new waver. My gf, now wife was a goth punk girl. From back in the late '80s and '90s. We have kids now who are teenagers. This is a good playlist for newcomers. Very familiar with many of these bands and music.

This is what I thought as well!!
And “could you be a freak on a leash” by korn and bob marley
As a new goth (one or two years experience) thank u so much for this playlist! I am the only goth in my social circle so its kind of hard to find nice goth music recommendations. Most people keep on confusing emo, metal and goth and I am kind of sick of it, so it is indeed nice to find a chanel with so many goth classics! Now I also know what to send my friends when they ask what is goth!
When I heard him singing the name "Ligea" I thought, isn't that a Poe story? Satisfied that I was right but still baffled why my brain retained that for over 10 years from when I was really into Poe lol

I had that 'gothic' playlist Spotify made recommended to me and I was like "good but imma find a playlist made by a goth" and this seems like a tlly good start! I feel like my music has grown so much, and I think this might be the spot where I best fit
Same lol, that playlist is where I found Sixousie and the Banshees and I’ve been obsessed with them ever since and now I’m trying to learn all I can about the subculture
i started to fall in love with gothic fashion, and developed a desire to join the goth community- this is my introduction to the music, as I have been told it is very important to listen to goth music if I want to label myself as a member of this subculture. i've also began researching goth history, so I hope I'm becoming a baby bat who can make experienced goths proud 🖤
for anyone who only think goths are people who wear all black and are all edgy and are like the goth kids from south park:
The Goth fashion is all based off of the MUSIC-based subculture, vocals with distant and sometimes cold voices with reverberations tends to be goth music and a gothic band can usually be seen by its concerts, a lot of them have very theatrical style concerts, kind of like the march violets or alien sex fiend, the history of the music is very interesting, its actually a subgenre of rock music too! coming from the same timeline as the starts of Punk rock music (i hope im correct?), i know this is a huge out of order ramble so i apologize for that, but this is what a lot of goth is about, its not all black clothing, woe is me, and what people like to call emo (emo is a totally diff thing). All the fashion just stems from the bands and musicians who were a lot of the time labelled as goth
(this is such a fucking gigantic ramble im so sorry i know how out of order it is so i apologize but if you managed to read my bullshit than i thank you)
as a budding baby bat i really appreciate this!

As an "Elder" Goth who's been around since the late '80's, I love that you put in bands I've never heard of, like Bat Nouveau, The Golden Apes and Frank the Baptist. Thank you so much! I have to be honest and say that I didn't actually like Bat Nouveau, as I found them monotonal (they didn't seem to know more than two chords and couldn't sing worth shit), but they had a Punk sensibility that definitely showed Goth's roots. Frank The Baptist was a lot of fun with their sea-shanty, drunken bar-crawl style! 🖤 The Cure's "Boys Don't Cry" brought back memories of a Cure T-shirt I'd found in a dumpster that had the famous "Boys Don't Cry" image on it that I adored and wore to rags. Wish I could find another vintage one. And Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of "The Passenger" is one of my all-time favourites, as is "Bauhaus' "She's In Parties"!
I hope you can forgive me for this, but "Crying" by Ghosting was execrable. I mean it was really terrible. I'm surprised you'd consider it a favourite in your personal playlist. They can't sing, the song was bland, and the song went nowhere. Personally, "Crying" and "The Cry" by Bat Nouveau really could have been replaced by something else from bands equally early in the era. Maybe something by Danielle Dax or Diamanda Galas, who can actually write and sing, and they were instrumental and early in the scene, or X-mal Deutschland, Einsterzende Neubauten, or even the inimitable Rozz Williams and his group Christian Death, the very man who gave the Goth subculture it's name (he was dubbed the Gothic Goblin by his flat mates because the building he was living in was named the Gothic Arms--or something like that, according to the lead singer of The Cult, or so goes the legend, and his fans became known as Goths). Anyway, that's just my personal taste, and no one says we have to agree, or have the same tastes. Cheers!
Thanks again for putting this excellent collection together. Much peace and silliness, because the world needs more silliness--of the *fun* kind, of course!🖤
My pleasure!
we have the exact opposite opinions on this in everyway, have a good day tho.
Actually, it's Andi Sex Gang that was nicknamed the Gothic Goblin, and not Rozz Williams. If you're going to be an elitist, at least get your facts straight.
I also was around in the 80s.. I am so grateful for playlists like this that introduce me to bands I am unfamiliar with
Idk if it can be considered goth music, but maybe check out GOST (not Ghost) and Perturbator. They’re Darkwave/Synthwave artists and their most recent albums have a more goth tone to them. Idk just thought I’d put it out there 😅

Okay, the gothic subculture just being a goth in general is a music-based subculture so it's refreshing to see people make playlists for it
🖤these baby bats are growing
My pet bats were playing this in the attic and I went up to see what was all about ❤
My Mom recently put me onto some older punk and goth rock she'd listen to back in her highschool years.
I'm more a fan of classic rock and metal, but I never thought I'd see myself listening to this stuff. It's growing on me quite a bit.
I always wondered what gothic music actually sounds like and when I finally looked it up this was the first thing that vame up. I'm currently making a new character for a TTRPG and for me music is a key part of understanding my OCs so this has been very helpful. From this music I'd say that not only is a partial goth aesthetic (long black dresses and all that but not quite as much makeup) the right style for my character but I now have a better grasp on my character's personality. she will be wearing more practical outfits while fighting though because as cool as dresses look they fucking suck to have to run in.
"If you spell Goth with a capitol 'G', you're probably a 'True Goth' - Only "posers" use the small 'g' because for those people, this is just a 'temporary teenage phase' "
Yeah, it's a really snobbish and pretentious statement; but, if you're going to really embrace all that is Goth, then it's an obnoxiously simple but true statement. Remember, it was Joy Division who invented the sound, while Bauhaus established the look, and then you add you're own splash of snye unrepentant, morose, sardonic sense humor with attitude ― Boom... !!!! Then you get an entire music movement started. Goth is a lifestyle and a mind-set. It's important for all the "Baby Bats" to understand the Underground Subculture's beginnings, histrionics', and subtle nuances.
It was 1982 and I was twelve year's old, so I was attending a private Christian School, but there was the University of California at Santa Cruz radio station. I could barely tune in on the radio, but there was a British Goth-girl who brought all the latest and best music with her from England, so she booked an eleven-thirty to one-thirty evening slot. I already wore a black uniform at school, but I discovered a buddy of mine named Romeo, who also liked the exact same radio station. The only real "outward" form of rebellion we were allowed at school, was to wear the eight-hole Doc Marten's with brass eyelet's and we both shaved the sides of our heads, so our hair had the perfect flop to one side, but on weekends we'd break out the vacuum cleaner-hose blasting Aquanet hairspray to make spikes. Yes, we'd rip into Kool-Aid packets to color our hair and have stained fingers for days afterward. Occasionally, we'd swoop our head's, flopping our long hair to the either side just to annoy everybody.
Yet, there was always the music; Xmal Deutschland, Christian Death, Mephisto Waltz, Bauhaus, Siouxie & The Banshee's, Joy Division, Sisters of Mercy, Alien Sex Fiend, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Clan of Xymox, and the list goes on and on.
xx_C4TY_xx ― I'd love to hear a Volume II, but include songs suggested from the Goth-father's, like myself included; "Incubus Succubus", "Wax and Wane", "Romeo's Distress" and "Muscoveit Mosquito". For what it's worth, this walk down memory lane, gave you another subscriber. It's a great job, from one Goth-kyd to another..... !!!!
Wow! Thanks for the amazing info! Now I really feel like I should make a part 2!

As a baby bat many years ago I made lots of mistakes of what goth music actually was and it was like a journey discovering what bands I liked , this is a good list , my favourites are plastique noir empty streets, bauhaus shes in parties, and ghosting , I also like metal and punk, there's so many good bands out there and discovering new ones is always fun , I think for new goths as long as you can appreciate trad goth music and understand where it all started there's no reason why you can't listen to other music tastes as well 🦇
Baby Bats! 🤣🤣🤣 I worked in a cemetery for a while as a teen. I found a bat on the ground with nursing babies attached. I took them to my grandmother's house.... She screamed....
Growing up in the late 80’s and coming into my own gothness 😂I’m happy to see some bands here I have never heard of. Great playlist! Long time fan of the cure , bauhaus, Siouxsie and the banshees. This brought me back to Smokey dark limelight in NYC on goth night.
I've started to be interested in learning more about being Goth because I enjoy finding new things to be interested in.
This music is actually really nice.
ive been considering goth for a while and i think ive finally found myself. thank you!!
Yay!

I have never heard goth music before, it's pretty good!
as a baby bat myself, this playlist is so lovely 🖤
i love goth culture & have been doing research on it lately as well as trying to find good music playlists.. good to see that i have found one ^_^
This is good for Baby Bats and Elder Goths alike 🖤
tryna expand my music taste, thanks for making this 🙏
I found this playlist through a youtube recommendation on a cold night in September while skating and from that day, my whole world changed for the better🖤💀🖤 note from:

Maybe it's my age, but it's hard to imagine this music as goth. It sounds like a mix of surfer rock and new wave.
I'm not gothic (or I don't think I am) but I love so much the way goth music is danceable (at least for me it is), I feel like dancing for like 1000 hours nonstop
Such a great selection to start off baby bats, this is one of the best playlists ever
As a baby bat, I really appreciate a playlist like this! I dont really know many bands considering im starting so im glad to have thrips playlist for reference! I thank you ver so kindly for this. Thabk you💕💕🦇
I am not really a gothic dude , Just trying some new type of music and now really like this playlist. Thanks dude.
I used to not listen to music at all, but last year I got into it, trying all new sorts of music now, and Grunge/Punk/Goth really feels nice to listen too. Thank you for the video!
Couldn't have started with a better song!
*me looking for siouxie and the banshees*
YES FOUND IT 😭😭
Music and subcultures and how they intersect has always been a fun study for me. I think I know what my style of dress is right now, and while I don't fully consider myself Goth (moreso eclectic I guess) I do enjoy the music/subgenres. It's fun stuff to experience!
im more accustomed to punk and emo rock, but goth rock is a new interest of mine. tysm for this!
ive always loved darker music since i was younger..i could never find music that i felt i truly connected to but i feel like ive found my calling! im learning more about the culture & as much as I can! so excited to learn more, these comments have reassured me so much, thank you to all the kind souls here
we are BABY BATS 🦇🖤🤟🏼
As a baby bat, stuff like this really helps! If anyone could recommend anymore music/bands like this so I can make a playlist, that would be lovely!
I love gothic music and its culture itself ♡
I'm not with the style, but the genre in music is AMAZING. Thank you for this playlist

@@ghost-fs2xq so if i love gothic musics, dressings and others, i can call myself a goth?
@@ghost-fs2xq I love this music so am I considered a goth?
@@emperorliz yes!
I've been interested in goth subculture for a while, and this is probably my first time actually listening. This is LIT!
THIS is goth music playlist Finally 😭❤
It's the first time that I'm listening to an hour long playlist and enjoying every single song on it! I think I found my tribe. I've always mostly worn black clothes and didn't get the best feedback on it, but now I can maybe connect it with something much deeper than black 🖤
