Internships are the new "entry level" jobs. Entry level jobs and junior position are the new "3-5 years of experience". Speaking from experience.

Much easier to skip the line if you go to a good university. For some fields like finance you start on a track from university, etc

My biggest problem with higher education and its connection to industry is that the industry keeps moving the goalpost further and further away on what is considered the "minimum required skill level." My grandpa did not even get into university and managed to work himself up to a manager position. My dad half assed his way to an engineering degree and found a blooming economy that considered him a catch. I have a pharma diploma, a master's degree in drug research (from a top 10 uni in my field), know two foreign languages and python/bash, and i still struggle to find a job because the new trend is to have 3 to 5 years of experience, preferably with AI knowledge. Within 3 years, from the moment I started my Master's until today, the industry decided to increase its standards and leave me searching for internships because I'm not "qualified enough", and I'm honestly terrified at how much more demanding the field will be on newcomers another 3 years from now. This doesn't seem like a very healthy trend imo and there is only so much knowledge a human being can absorb while maintaining a balanced life, just so they can get a job.
Sorry for the rambling. I just wanted to vent a bit.
    Great video, as always, man.

You are making a great point which I touched on in a comment I made above...you worked very hard in school to become successful and probably took on quite a bit of debt to be in your field, only to find out that now you are struggling to obtain employment in the field while others like your Grandfather and dad did not enslave themselves into debt (which was very wise) and they seemed to make great successes of themselves and that was way before the day we are in now where it is even easier to become successful without the degree. The "industry" increasing its standards sounds more like you are being required to spend even more money to obtain the job you would love to do. I wish you a lot of luck and perhaps this could be God pushing you in a direction you never dreamed of that could end in even more fulfillment than you ever thought you would have.

Tbh, as an actual university student right now I'm finding it a bit hit-or-miss. Sometimes I get a good professor, learn a lot, and feel like it's worth it. Other times I get a professor who just does not care and I feel like I'm wasting money.
At the end of the day, in many classes I either have to take the initiative to teach myself because the class just isn't taught well or I learn a bunch, dump my knowledge on the final and forget it because none of the subsequent classes need to build on that knowledge.
The places I am learning the most are through experiences, whether work experience or doing research at the university. But imo neither of those things should be tied to my tuition in the first place.
I'm applying to med school and I knew medicine is what I wanted to do since high school, I already knew that university was right for me. But I really question if we should be telling people to take upwards of several hundred thousand dollars of debt when they're not even sure what they want to do with their lives. Sure it can make sense in tech, finance, engineering, or medicine and it's clearly worked out for you but I've also seen people with even more advanced degrees than a bachelor's either struggle to find a job or find one that would reasonably pay back their loans.

    • @JustJoshBusiness
      @JustJoshBusiness  7 месяцев назад +1

Btw on your first sentence re hit-or-miss. That's why I added at the end that for me, I could have condensed everything I learnt in 6 years into 1. If all professors and classes were good. That is unfortunately somewhat normal.

So true, it's not until you are in your mid 30's to early 40's till you finally see to financial value of Uni. However if you did start working after high school and got into the housing market in Aust. it's likely you would of came out ahead of ppl who went to uni and delayed their first house. I did Applied Geology in W.Aust uni and with the high and lows on the mining industry it was hard to get traction financially, however now in my 40's my time at uni has truely paid off by working in a good company/location/commodity/work-life balance.

Hi Josh, great video, I'm a college undergraduate studying computer science and the college I'm studying at isn't great since I underperformed in high school, I was confused about whether I should get a call centre job straight out of college or try to go to uni for higher studies, this video convinced me to do the latter, I would definitely like to see your college experience, and also know why and how I could climb the ladder if I were to pick the first choice.

Hey there Josh, I'm curious as to have your opinion on MBA's specifically. I also completed a degree in computer science and have been working for a couple years as a software developer. I'm interested in starting my own business in the long term and am currently looking at starting an MBA part-time. There's a good university where I currently reside. Do you believe that an MBA will be more beneficial vs a master's in CS? Thanks and great video!

    • @JustJoshBusiness

It really depends on who you get in your founding team and what role you plan to play. If you plan on being the CEO or the sole co-founder, i believe a business education will help more than furthering your CS education. I think you will get more out of university if you study a completely new discipline. And business knowledge is critical to running a successful business. Knowing how to market yourself, budget, raise capital, value your business, etc.

  • @patrickduchene3181

The influencers and RUclipsrs you mentioned in the beginning of the video are mostly correct who are saying going to a university is not worth it. Going to a University is not worth it for most except for studying medicine, law, engineering, business or finance. Most are studying communications, social sciences and humanities, which are on the lower income ladder. When you take out the top 10% of college graduates, the earnings average of college graduates is actually lower than those who don't go to college. The doctors, engineers and lawyers skew this number with their higher income and makes it appear as though average college graduate earnings are higher. There are 11 million job openings as we speak in North America that do not require a college degree. There are apprenticeships to become plumbers, welders, electricians, etc. that do not require a college degree offering an entrance salary of $80,000. Imagine being in this position making $80,000 a year salary without the massive college debt that will be incurred by taking the steps pushed in this video. The average 2024 in-state tuition per year is $26,000 and $36,000 out-of-state which equates to over $100,000 of college debt for these 20-22-year-olds, of which half will not even take jobs that they went to school for and will most likely be making loan payments for 10-15-20+ years. When 52% of college graduates get jobs out of college that don't require them to have a degree with that amount of debt, it deflates many of your traditional talking points in your video about the benefits/importance of a college degree. It would be responsible for you to present the other side to your audience as well by making another video about the benefits of not going to a university and doing an apprenticeship or doing things like running a RUclips channel like you do, that appears to be doing very well, that does not require a college degree. This would be in line with how you present hardware on your channel where you thoroughly present the pros and cons and, in this video, you did not present many, if any cons of a pursuing a degree so your audience can make an educated decision about this topic. You mention benefits such as expanding your horizon (which is quite silly to use as a benefit of a college degree), valuable connections, learning current best practices, getting to learn what you like.... can you not get these same benefits by doing internships and apprenticeships while doing the actual tasks you want to do for a living? Can you not "learn how to perform" by doing an internship at an HVAC company for free or even getting paid while doing the real hands-on work and working alongside real world professionals and potential employers and contacts...all while not incurring debt to do so? You can "get valuable connections" by going to a workshop or trade show for free with a high concentration of industry professionals with which you want to surround yourself. Almost every point you made does not require attending a university and telling your viewers they should physically attend a university because you think they cannot find the information online themselves or that they have short attention spans is pretty insulting and condescending and wearing a suit and tie to make your points does not establish credibility. Assuming that the reason your viewers "can't watch your videos for more than a couple of seconds" is a problem on their end and not that they just may not like your content is also quite condescending. This video really sounded more like a propaganda video for government subsidized college loans than a statistically accurate argument for taking on massive amounts of debt for mostly little return on your investment to obtain a degree. For the most part, current day universities are a money-making scheme by the elites, government and big banks and is more about the money and less about equipping young adults to be successful in a field. With debt being such a massive crisis in our country, we should be very careful encouraging people to enter into such a journey that enslaves them into this debt.

On the note of selling courses and the fact that you went to MIT. I also want to point out that some universities especially MIT have a phenomenal open courseware policy. MIT has almost all of their course resources posted online for free. And many of them even have recorded lectures. As you said, IF you have the DISCIPLINE to teach yourself you can do it. I just want to add, that you can do it entirely for free as well.
