Jobs are not what they used to be… the average time an employee spends with their company is now at the lowest level ever, and that’s by design.
We have gone from full time to part time, to casual, to gig work, lowering the expectation of a long-term professional relationship every step of the way.
If this didn’t do enough, studies have shown that many workplaces are now intentionally promoting the fear of job losses in an attempt to “motivate workers” and keep cost down, but this is usually a really dumb idea.
The death of job security is bad for workers AND bad for companies…
    But nobody cares anymore…
Up until the 1980’s it wasn’t unusual for workers to spend their entire professional careers working with just ONE company.
Company loyalty was highly valued by both employers and employees, and the threat of getting laid off or fired was incredibly low.
If you ever watch old films and see someone getting fired as a major plot point, just remember it actually was a big deal back then.
But according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, those days are long gone…
The average tenure of young employees these days is less than a third of the baby boomers exiting the workforce.
I don’t want to sound too old here, but back in my day people actually cared about losing their job, but today getting fired or laid off from your company just makes good content to post on Tik Tok.
This is a bad trend for companies, because it takes away their biggest stick.
The fear of getting fired is always going to be a motivator in the workplace, there really is no way around that, if you don’t do your job or cause too much trouble for the company you are going to lose your job along with the pay and benefits that come with it.
But as the great Peter Gibbons would say “that will only make someone work just hard enough to not get fired”.
The death of job security means that people just EXPECT to lose their job at some point in their career these days, but there are three big reasons why it was allowed to get this bad, and three reasons why… nobody really cares anymore…
So it’s time to learn How Money Works to find out why job security is dying, why nobody cares, and what happens when nobody has a job for long enough to be good at it…

Modern Workplace is a toxic terrain, with a constant threat of job security at risk if job performance is not met. The toxic nature of job burnout is there every day.
That is why Being your own boss offers more flexibility to work from anywhere at any time. No strict schedules to adhere too.
      And unlimited earning potential available.
You are the one calling the shots.
Building something that is truly yours and no one else and watching it grow liberating.
Also breaking free from daily monotonous 9-5 grind week in and week out.
Please do remember ofcourse being your own boss comes with challenges, but the rewards outweigh the risk of these modern toxic workplace environments.

Because of employees? Because of corporate behaviour more like it, to constantly want more for less. On top of that there is an outside pressure, be it at a social ladder, or freaking afford to exist, housing, food everything is a pressure that was non existent to ""loyal"" employees and that was easy because any job gave you expectations of affordable life. Now its not so, and as the video said there is a psychological game being played on the workers and its blatant to some (particularly the newer ones). People adapt to whats best, if you cant afford a freaking roof by working MORE hours than in the past with more productivity in an environment that can discard you, you would also be ""nomadic"".

Now I will just take the "promotion", learn the job at the company and get the appropriate salary in 2 years, when I switch to a different company. I would love to be loyal but I simply cannot afford it🤷‍♂

Yep. The company I work for used to have a pension, a good one at that, and switched over to a 401(k) shortly before I came onboard. Now they wonder why there's so much turnover. It's because the pension was the last incentive for employees to remain where they were. So now most employees change jobs every 2-5 years, sometimes just to return to the company with higher pay and position than if they had remained where they were.

    • @manoftomorrow5987

This is true. That’s why as a manager I try to see what I can do to raise salaries as much as possible. If the employee is “valuable” to my team, I’ll try and match…once I can defend the decision to the higher ups.
Even me, I recently started a new job and the reason why I left my previous job was because the new employees came in with more perks than I had…I quickly realized that the market was leaving me behind and started to job hunt. Now I’ve gotten the perks at the new employer that I wasn’t getting at my old one..and the funny thing is that my old employer would’ve found it hard to match what I’m getting now.
I’m giving myself another 4-5 years and then retest the market to ensure I’m getting what I think I deserve. Loyalty isn’t a thing for me.

The best thing to do is just start looking for a new job while already at your job. Then you can be demanding and not in a position to acquiesce. After a couple interviews you can play the “would I rather stay here where In acclimated or risk something new” game. But if you’re going into interviews desperate you’ll be taken advantage of. And in the before times, that was ok and you were left to figure things out. But with everyone now trying to squeeze out every drop of "efficiency" they not only want you to just say "yessir" to some insanely ludicrous timeline, but ALSO justify every second you spent doing the task and why wasn't it done faster? When I screw up because they haven’t explained something to me yet, they shrug, say “ oh well let me bring you up to speed” and I get the full training. So I’m in the weird position of not being adequately trained but my admin understands and just rolls with it. It’s gonna kill me to leave this place in a couple years. I’m a recent college graduate, and my only choices in jobs seem to be either jobs that pay so little that it actually costs money to work at them, or scams/ponzi schemes that are disguised as jobs. Not only that, applying for any job whatsoever usually requires writing more in resumes, essays, and cover letters than any assignment in cover. Even with the applications, it takes hours trying to figure out what ai filters the job is using, and how to get around that just for the CHANCE of a person seeing it. I swear it would take less less work and writing to write a book than it would to land just a single, well paying job.

There you can hone your skills to lie your way into a job. That's all there is now, at one point you will get a good paying job, but first prepare to spend a couple years in very bad ones , try to get some experience, and than you will be able to get to your first decent job, and than every 3 years, look and switch jobs with a reasonable explanation.

@Manny Finding jobs themselves isn’t usually hard, and I can normally land any job if I get a FaceTime/
In-person interview. It’s the type of jobs that are usually the problem. Many normal and/or part time jobs that aren’t licensed or multi-year experienced usually pay at an amount that would break even at best, or would actually cost money to work there at worst. Other jobs I have looked at or interviewed were either churn sites that would in reality pay little, if at all, or were literal scams(it is scary how many times I have gone to a job interview only for the employees or even boss to describe it as a “legal Ponzi scheme”). I’m not too picky about where I work so long as it doesn’t fall into the previous categories and doesn’t rely on harming customers/harming myself. For reference, I live in the south Florida area. There, the average pay for normal jobs is usually between 30-50/55k, while the average rental price can be as high as $3300 a month

You have to go around asking different people from different teams how things work so that you can get a good idea of how the business operates and how you can improve processes and get them to make more money or reduce costs --the only things that will get you promoted and earning more money. My biggest piece of advice is to stay curious, ask all the questions, and talk to as many people as possible in the company. When you first start, seek out the few who have been there for 5+ years and really know how the sausage gets made. That institutional knowledge becomes gold in this environment.

I think there is a flaw in statement about self learning. Self training doesn’t get you as far as you think. In my experience in tech, recruiters don't care about your self taught skills - they care about the skills you have spent years using at work in a previous role.
I have heard recruiters say exactly this - why care for the skills learned in someone's home learnt side project when there are hundreds of applicants who have already been doing that for years at work in a commercial setting?

    • @jyashin
      @jyashin 4 месяца назад +5

      You've missed the point.
In tech, your self-taught skills absolutely matter... when you're already on a task and you need to get something done. You can easily finagle some project/contract/job as being relevant to the tech you're applying for. The self-teaching is for when they test out your capabilities, and you actually need to prove you're able to do the task.

    • @paulmaxwell-walters8861
      @paulmaxwell-walters8861 4 месяца назад +6

@@jyashin you are right to a point i.e. self learning for a commercial project you are already working on. That has great power. However that doesn't help those coming into tech from other industries or applying for jobs using different stacks and technologies from what their current employer is using or will allow.
Startups are often flexible with their dev staff trying new frameworks, languages etc. in their current roles. Larger companies are less so - FAANG companies for instance often have their own in-house frameworks and tools that are mandated and don't transfer elsewhere. It is hard to finagle previous experience if the recruiter has a set of mandatory specific requirements and your experience uses entirely different technologies.
There are some possible ways around it - creating or contributing to apps with a large user base (i.e. open source projects) and maybe even revenue, applying for jobs in the early stage of your career that provide experience in a wide and updated set of industry standard frameworks and tools, avoiding recruiters and focusing on networking with hiring managers who may be more accommodating. However it is still very difficult.

As "job uncertainty" goes, I want to emphasize the point that nobody is safe. I am a baker for Panera Bread, and our entire identity is clean food on bread baked from fresh dough that's delivered every day. Bread is in our name, it's on our logo, it's our whole persona. Unfortunately, I am in one of the final few markets that can even claim this. Most have moved to frozen bread and laid off their bakers entirely. When a company is so intent on lowering costs that it compromises its whole ethos to save a buck, you know you're not safe. I am counting down the days until I lose my job. The real tragedy is that my actual cafe loves me and my boss is trying very hard to get me raises and keep me on board. It's the happiest I've ever been at a job and I hate to lose it.
My boss has said that if he's even allowed to keep one baker (there are three of us), he's going to support me. Even so, I may not have a choice but to leave. So much of our product has been deleted or simplified (ie: pastries, previously hand-mixed or at least shaped by hand, are now exclusively freezer-to-oven). This has drastically reduced the number of hours it takes to pull off a day's bake, meaning I can't even get full-time hours out of the job anymore. Any further reduction (from using frozen bread) and I just can't pay my bills. That's the corporate hellscape we're living in, though.

Because most of the time the long term employees that companies have are the ones that "stuck around" and not necessarily their best so when a new employee comes around trying to enact change or even question why things are done the way they are, it quickly gets shut down and the person shunned from the "club".

I was in a decently high position as well. My company took the time to let me train and understand the work which resulted in me crushing multimillion dollar budgets, even larger equipment sets, coordination of large scale million dollar events, and buying and moving equipment all around the world with extremely great performance marks that will carry me for any job search for years to come. I got made redundant from the dream job in 2020 during covid after 18 months of delivering a lot of efficiency and savings. I decided to become a contractor because my field is a statutory obligation so I will never be out of work and there is a big shortage of us. Each contract is between 3-12 months and can be anywhere in the country. I've just started my 8th contract in 4 years and whilst that sounds like I have little job security it's actually had the opposite effect. My CV is so dense with experience and I've mastered interview skills to the point I was picked for this new role out of a dozen other candidates. I could never see myself working full time for one company years on end when as a contractor I get different experiences and literally double the pay.

My OR lost 3 nurses who quit, followed by one asking for transfer. We then temporarily lost 2 for a torn ACL and maternity. That's just shy of half our nursing staff.
Each surgical case requires an RN to be there. At this point, management nurses are having to work cases, call that used to be only for evening and night emergencies is now being extended to forcing people to come in during the day, and the remaining nurses are getting increasingly irate in what will obviously not be a domino effect of nurses quitting due to the increased workload of nurses quitting.
How is corporate handling this? $40,000 hiring bonuses for new hires. $5,000 bonuses for employees that bring in RNs. Contract job positions that will pay travel nurses double to come in to relieve the pressure.
And yet we're constantly told by corporate that we're on a shoestring budget. Those bonuses alone are $120,000 that could have been spent on retention.
If more nurses quit and replacements can't fill the gaps, we'll eventually have to close OR rooms and cancel cases. That is a HUGE loss of money for the hospital.
