Fëanor is back in Middle-earth, and he is looking for blood. The Noldor travel into Hithlum and fight the Orcs of Morgoth by the shores of Lake Mithrim, driving them back towards Angband, where Fëanor meets his doom in battle against the mighty Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs.
Then, later, Fingolfin shows up with his (much larger) army, and marches all the way to the gates of Thangorodrim, which are shut against him after the first rising of the sun. In the meantime, Maedhros has gotten himself captured ... and Fingon the Valiant, his old friend from Valinor, travels back there again to free him.
Also: politicking with Thingol, the Eagles show up for the first time, Caranthir, Finrod, and Angrod get their first appearances ... and we theorise about the prevalence of fire imagery in the story of the rebellion of the Noldor.
Part two should be here in... roughly two weeks' time.

I really love how the contrast between Feanor and Fingolfin is deepened in this chapter. One burns with an inner fire while the other has flowers literally grow at his feet. There's also the later comparison of each of their fights before the gates of Thangorodrim.

Feanor may have been the biggest git to ever exist in Arda..... but you cannot doubt that he was also a grade A badass. It really is staggering to think of what he might have accomplished if he hadn't let his paranoia and jealousy overwhelm him.

Over the past forty years I've become very familiar with most of Tolkien's legends of Arda (although I've yet to read The History of Middle Earth, Beren and Lúthien and The Fall of Gondolin). The various Tolkien Loremasters here on RUclips have all, in their original, reverend and exciting ways, re-animated my love for Tolkien's works, *Voice of Geekdom* not least among them.
I look forward to Amazon's forthcoming series on the Second Age but the Tolkien estate would do well to consider engaging the above Loremasters as script writers for a future screenplay for a series covering the First Age. An additional reward for their marvellous dedication would be starring roles in that series.
    *Bravo, Voice of Geekdom!*

Brilliant video and yeah I didn’t really take the theme of fire into account in my first reading. As I think the book itself was so overwhelming it’s hard to really think about some of the thematic aspects. It’s definitely ironic that the death of feanor and the rising of sun which = start of the first age is interesting. Don’t have much of an idea of the thematic reasonings but almost like Feanor flames went to the sun and first age proper started. Though obviously I could be reaching. But yeah definitely interesting. Anyways awesome video and insight especially the one with Maedhros
    “Fingon daring alone went forth
    and sought for Maidros where he hung;
    in torment terrible he swung,
his wrist in band of forgéd steel,
from a sheer precipice where reel
    the dizzy senses staring down
    from Thangorodrim’s stony crown.
The song of Fingon Elves yet sing,
    captain of armies, Gnomish king,
who fell at last in flame of swords
with his white banners and his lords.
They sing how Maidros free he set,
and stayed the feud that slumbered yet
between the children proud of Finn.”
    ( from the Lay)

The tragedy of fire is that it can burn itself out. Given how strong the theme of music is with the Valar, it's also a great juxtaposition between the two sides that their symbolism itself are opposing.
    Oh the eagles.
I love how there is always a string of hope in these tragic times.
Admittedly the first thing that struck me about this section, though, was: What kind of *bleeping* force were his sons wielding to ward off Balrog/S/, plural?!
As always, wonderful work by our guest voice actors!

Feanor was said to be the greatest of the elves ever born (or something like that?). Morgoth, in the beginning, was the greatest of the Valar. With great powers come great.......downfalls.
I never noticed all the "fire filled," moments in his life were negative, or brought negative consequences. Almost like he was incapable of ever being calm or level headed. Quite the tragic tale.

I'm really fascinated by the elemental symbolism of Feanor. Fire stands for passion and strong emotions. It can give you warmth, grant you light in darkness, and heat your furnace for work. But if left unchecked, it will go out of control and consume everything until only ashes are left.
Feanor's passion could have been a great blessing for the Eldars. He was able to achieve astonishing things by creating the silmarils, and they could have served as a replacement for the trees. But the corruption of Melkor turned him into a destructive force that consumed everything, even his own kind. However, even without Melkor's influence, he still had great potential to become a dangerous villain. Like fire, he's passionate but also extremely greedy and perhaps he was doomed to become a destructive force even without Melkor's existence as he already ruined his mother when he was born. Characteristics that seem quite unnatural for the elves.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree...I like this image in relation to the attitude and personality of the sons of Feanor.
But how could they? The (sad) truth is that they are all doomed, and, to use Mandos's chilling words, 'to evil end shall all things turn that they begin well'. They can't help or escape that fate, like many other living beings in Tolkien's secondary world - a world that is a created one, and whose story - at least the one of the Elves - has been mostly designed and preordained in the 3 themes of the Music of the Ainur.
Men probably are the only race in the legendarium who have a real degree of freedom in shaping their destiny, as their future is not bound to the fate of Arda. This is why mortality is 'a gift', and not a curse, although the Numenorians foolisly (and tragically) did not see it that way, to the final demise of their civilisation.
You should really organise a live debate on the huge topic of predestination vs free will in Tolken's universe with different voices and point of views involved. It's something that has always fascinated me, and many readers across the world I think, and could help understand and explain many things which happen in the books.

Appreciated your comment. I personally do not think that the Sons of Fëanor were compelled to act as they did, Maglor and Maedhros have a discussion in the end referring to this and there are other hints, too (e.g. that they accepted that Lúthien carried a Silmaril). I mostly had the impression that they simply weighed keeping the oath higher than the alternative. And they were not fated to take this oath in the first place.
I agree that Elves are less free than Men but I think it's because they are bound to the Earth so they feel the consequences of their decisions for much longer and can thus act less recklessly unless they want to go on a destructive path.

I think in Feanor Eru has imbibed in him a part of the flame imperishable, thus explaining what happened to him when he died. Something that Morgoth has coveted from the beginning but was denied to him by eru. This explains their hatred for one another. It also explains why Feanor is so full of himself.
    Just my worthless thoughts.

the man was driver of fate of Arda. I mean he’s the one who has the most original thinking of all elves, n most farsightedness too. He throws the door to the mightiest of the beings of Arda, lol in Formemos. He like Morgoth is too impatient n restless.
