He is very good and I also have been a fan since the sudden stop album. I remember Guitar player magazine rated him as Canada's greatest unknown guitarist and pretty much number 2 in the world 🌎 behind Danny Gatton.
Today is the first day I have ever heard this Colin James- am so very sorry it took me so long to find him!!!He is THE BLUES MAN!!!!! I really like him & he sings & rips that guitar to bits!!! He is something else!!!!
my favourite Blues Canadian artist by a landslide. Have seen him perform many times and hope to see him again and again. He never disappoints. Such talent!
My ex husband and I have been divorced for 35 years and good friends for 49 years now, about years into going our separate ways still shared friendships, concerts & the cottage. One evening we drove to see Colin James with no tickets on a wing and a prayer that we would in his words "score some." Good idea..2 hr. drive, meh? No wonder I divorced you, I said. We did go and ended up getting in and landing the greatest table. My ex is an accomplished musician that (sumbitch) can pick up any instrument and just start playing the dang thing! Royal Conservatory of Music and a teacher previously. It's infuriating when you can't even sing a note and when you do you sound like "Alfalfa from the original Our Gang" I was able to talk to Colin James about what an amazing guitarist he was and how he sounded exactly like Eric Clapton. I asked him to allow my ex to come up and play a tune with them. I didn't give him much of a choice really. I told him had to because it was his birthday the following week, and the harrowing 2 hour journey I suffered getting there due to my ex being a backseat driver? Not to mention now I have to rent a room because I can't handle the pressure of having to go through it all over again tonight! He was so wonderful and funny. Everything was so loud and we were just screaming and laughing at each other. He screamed what's your name and tell your ex get ready. Colin, the band and the crowd went nuts! CHRIS KICKED A$$!! Thank you Colin, that was really lovely for you to do. Blessings
Great Canadian talent indeed.First saw Colin James at a bar in Kenora,Ontario,Canada called 'Shooters'.It was 1988 and just before the release of his first album.Prior to his performance in Kenora I had no idea who he was.I remember my jaw dropping when he opened up with a couple Stevie Ray Vaughn songs and absolutely nailed them.I was sold on his talent immediately. Being a guitarist myself I just had to approach the table he was sitting at after the second set at which time we sparked up a conversation about guitars and amps.He was very approachable and landed up writing on the back of his empty 'Players' cigarette pack his guitar equipment setup & configuration,...which I still possess today in my Rock n'Roll scrap book. During our conversation he also praised Stevie Ray Vaughn for taking him under his wing after SRV caught one of Colin's shows in western Canada. He said SRV took him down to Austin,Texas and introduced him to the right people which resulted in a record deal. Just yesterday,Thursday,Oct.15,2015 I saw him perform for the 8th time at the London,Ontario,Canada at the first annual Octoberfest where Kim Mitchell opened up for him.It was good to see him perform again at the top of his game.I took 40 minutes of video that will be posted on RUclips shortly. I believe this particular video footage was taken at the 'Walker Theatre' in Winnipeg,Manitoba,Canada which is where I saw one of his shows back in 1995 for his 'Bad Habits' tour. One of the best venues for live music that I have been in. Rock on Colin,...rock on! Here's the link to the Oct.15,2015 London,Ontario,Canada show I uploaded: ruclips.net/video/MRAjU0KS0vQ/видео.html
Hello Gra Gor. I couldn't agree more. (4 years later) The Canadian blues sound of the late 60's +. Something worth wrapping oneself in a flag for. Thank you Colin for becoming such a gourmet of the Blues.
He will always be of of Canada's finest. I saw him and this band perform a free outdoor concert in Brockville, around this same era. Among a few other times. Never often enough!
Talk about a talented, diversified artist and here ya go! Man he's unbelievable playing all the kinds of music and genres he does! Can't get enough of his guitar playing ! Awesome post!
Living in his hometown (Vancouver bc) I've seen him a dozen times and he does NOT disappoint his haunting guitar rifts tear at your soul and rebuilds it
Saw him in Edmonton circa 1987 when he seemed so young to look at but betrayed his years with soul of a blues man 3 times his age. I was working security before the concert and this dude tried to sneak in the back door. No pass or nothing. Did not recognize him (pre Internet ) told me he was with the band and that is when the pieces fell into place and I realized it was Colin James. I was super embarrassed. Good dude did not get mad. Great show and had his family (?) backstage afterwords.
Colin is phenomenal. Seen him 4 times live... Very underrated yes... However not the greatest song writing and that's probably why he never made it as big. Killer voice. Great player. Love his stuff

totally underrated....but by far one of the best out here. Love this man's music and his guitar playing. Hell of a voice too.

James was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. He and his band The Hoodoo Men opened for Stevie Ray Vaughan for several tour dates in the United States. According to legend, Vaughan himself suggested the stage name "Colin James", because when announced over arena P.A. systems, "Munn" sounded like "Mud". James also played guitar on Richard Marx's song "Thunder and Lightning".
CJ is a unique stand alone talent ~ Great R&B with a heart for jazz as strong as Harry Connick Jr.'s. Vocal phrasing is the hook and the guitar work is the reel.
I saw a video with SRV and he said that he was very impressed with CJ when he first met him, because he knew so much about the music styles of past legends.
I am one of the biggest SRV fan there is. My son Steven was born in March the year after SRV was taken from us and believe me, it's no coincidence that his name isSteven. That being said, I'm also a HUGE Colin James fan and I have to agree that they are equally talented. I do, however, prefer SR's gruffer, tar paperish voice.
Knew him when he was 13 years old. We all knew then he was going to have a great career. Later on I drove his amps to a gig in the back of my truck and danced with his mother. LOL
Def have to agree.Man has mad skills and frankly to compare is akin to judging blue and bluer. This cat has the soul to make ya feel it.Nuf said as far as i am concerned
Colin toured with SRV. Stevie considered Colin his protege, which Colin considered an honor, but didn't think he was worthy of. I think they are both greats, but with different strengths.
Yes underrated because the new generation don't understand this music. Yes he s another amazing Canadian artist!
Underrated his entire career... he's an amazing artist.
Completely under rated.... blows most US artists out of the water.
Agreed
I watched him play with B.B. King at Canada's Wonderland... second row.... with Etta James. Made this Canadian proud !
I've always liked the way he played. Right from the '80's
He is very good and I also have been a fan since the sudden stop album. I remember Guitar player magazine rated him as Canada's greatest unknown guitarist and pretty much number 2 in the world 🌎 behind Danny Gatton.
Another example of World Class Canadian Musicianship. Colin James plays from his heart and soul
So fantastic - esp now that he is older- he is even better!!!

Musically, he speaks to my soul like no one else. Been a fan of his since day one.
