Why SA military personnel are so out of shape now? I am from Brazil, and worked in Mozambique in 1994-5. In that time, I saw also military personnel from SA and They were very fit.
In my day even the brass was streamlined. Not one CO or higher with a boep. I remember one RSM who was a bit podgy but boy, when you go an a route march you will know about it. Normally called a "route run" or 'n klein draffie".

Corruption and ineptitude rule the roost at every govt institution including the SANDF. The SADF under sanctions and embargoes stopped the Cubans, Swapo, Russians, Angolans, Bulgarians, Romanians, East Germans at the Kunene river and created a buffer zone in Angola. The enemy never made it across and they were forced to enter into negotiations. The numbers killed on each side and the equipment captured tell the true story.
@Unati Noah We need to start by not discriminating based on race, religion, ethnicity etc. I know many young white people with very good grades that do not get positions in universities in our country yet their fellow matriculants of a darker hue with lower grades are getting positions at universities. A member of my family couldnt get a place in an SA govt university due to quotas and applied to a university in Europe, was given a place and even was awarded a bursary. I have a friend whose son went to a prestigeous high school and matriculated with excellent results but cannot get into a university due to racist quotas whereas his friends of colour have no problem even when their grades were significantly lower. I was told to my face that there were too many white people in the organisation where I worked before having my contract not renewed. That is fine but the contract was given to an anc bigwig who knows nothing about the specialist job. I was told that I have no political capital. When the police reaction to a white farmer giving a black intruder a slap before sending him off his farm is compared to the police inaction when there is a murder of a white farmer and the rape of his wife by a black gang, one can only conclude that there is institutionalized racism. When we look at the upcoming Expropriation without Compensation and how it is targeting white people and their land while ignoring the facts. The facts are that the land claims commission has already dealt with 93% of the registered land claims and over 90% of the successful claimants choose money not land then we can only conclude that this is a racist land grab not grounded in fact but rather feelings. We are being discriminated against and farmers in particular are being ethnically cleansed. Julius Malema said that they are not calling for the slaughter of whites at least not yet. Imagine if a white person made that comment. He also said most Indians are racist, not all but most. We are obviously judged differently according to race. This is not what I signed up for when I chose to stay in SA. This is not what I want for my children. We should be allowed to debate the past logically, honestly and with fervor but we should not discriminate against our children as is happening under the current regime. Until that happens I have no love for this place. This regime and state have made enemies of minorities. I used to be a member of the SACP as I believed in socialism and equality, but saw what was happening in the anc and sacp. The voting public supported zuma and his deputy cyril even though everybody knows that they were corrupt and have brought ruin to this country. They voted for the anc even after hearing so much about how the anc have stolen billions if not trillions from its voting public. How bad must things get before they vote the anc out. And even then who will they vote for.
