Would have been hard to find those South African divisions wanting to go to war with Germany. Most Boers opposed doing so and for good reason. The British forced them.

@@mrd7067 I am not able to help you there as I did the full set of second phase courses as part of an experimental development program for instructors. I knew several of the the members who were on the course shown in this videos and recognize some of the faces that appear in it, including the course instructor, Sergeant "Titos" Nel. I can tell you that a few of the elements of the course included were: Driving and Maintenance. Platoon Weapons Squad Leadership Military Clerical Protocol. Bush-craft and Survival. There is not much course material shown because the video was made as P.R. for the families and friends of the soldiers, not as a training medium.
@@majormanfredrex And this all fit in 12-13 weeks? As a reference i can only go with what i know. In the german military truck driver school alone is 6 weeks (+ basic maintanance), after which you get extra instruction on the specific vehicle (could theoretically be shelfed if the school used the vehicles used but it is directly transferable to a civilian truck driving licence), especially on driving off road. Edit: Just for clarification. "second phase training" means branch specific training after basic training? This is followed with unit training and/or specialisation, which is followed by deployment?
@@mrd7067 Bearing in mind that these men were National Service conscripts (in an initial tour of 2 years), and not professional soldiers, training in these fields was brief but intense. You are correct concerning the definition of "second phase" Not every member followed every course to completion although all were given an overview of them. The common elements were done together but they were divided into smaller groups each completing specialist training in one or other field. In my case, my training actually took up a full two years. My actual deployment was in annual three month periods in which I was instructing new recruits or in front line units.

What do you think makes you so special?, Funny how none of those Non White Country's are called Racist or Supremist , None of those Non White Country's elevate Whites above their Non White Race groups , but All White Country's must change so those very same Non Whites can invade and take over White Country's, and if the Whites don't accept it , they called Racist. How about we Flood all Non White Country's with different Non White groups they don't get along with or want in their Country's. Very fuckin easy to sit there making claims about Racism and accusing Whites of it , but take a hard look at the Non white race groups before you dare call Whites the Racist , Whites don't have a Homogeneous White Country's anymore , but the 4 major Non White Race groups do , but I bet you don't call those Non Whites Racist. Some advice catch a wake-up. When you can give me a valid reason Non Whites can keep their country's 100% their Non white race groups, they don't have FORCED brainwashing of their kids to hate everything about their race , their kids are not doctored and told they must mix with other Race groups , Every Fuckin thing you accuse the Whites of been the Racist , the Non Whites get to do it all without been called any names. So fuck off with your Racist bullshit. The Black Race was the first to kill innocent Whites in South Africa , they drew first blood and showed the Whites we could not trust them , and that piece of shit Mandela who was a fuckin Terrorist , gets treated like a Saint, but he was bombing churches , night clubs , building and killing innocent Whites , but I bet you don't think that is Racist hey. You should educate yourself on the real history of South Africa and not the lies that sound good to your ears. The only Racist are Non Whites, Whites have Sacrificed their Country's, Race , Cultures, Religeon All for the benefit of Non Whites. Tell me, what have the Non Whites sacrificed for the white race ?
I agree, so many good things were thrown out for no reason.

A long overdue update. I found one on the then Bidorbuy and bought immediately. 😊

Try 1968. 😉 The Army Gymnasium still issued WW2 type uniforms and the 'skietpiete' still carried WW2 Lee Enfield rifles.
I taught in Natal in the 1980s when boys had to do their time usually straight from school (conscription) in the SADF. Some of our boys were lost in the border conflicts when we had terrorists, Cubans, and Russians trying to invade SA and lob morters into SA. These boys soon become 'real' soldiers and the terrorists were soon on the run back into Angola which SA could have taken had not international pressure been put onto SA by such as Kissinger et al.
My husband also did his time and 10 years camps after.
Sad what has happened to SA since - a real mess, and glad I am out of it, but miss the place and the sunshine!

I am very impressed with the standard of drill and saluting the Bible really made me feel good. What a sad loss this army coming to an end. As one General in ww2 said, give me 15 yank divisions to invade europe, 10 Brit divisions to hold the ground and 4 South African divisions to defeat Germany
at the end of it all which one was left
Would have been hard to find those South African divisions wanting to go to war with Germany. Most Boers opposed doing so and for good reason. The British forced them.
@Gerhard van Niekerk Yeah, I suppose you are right. Sad.
That was general Awkenlek in North Africa. He commanded the S.à British Indian and Australian troops before Montey took over. Most of the hard work against Rommel was done by Awkenlek NOT Monty

I went to 5 SAI in 1974. I was 17 years old. My assigned PT "buddy", Strydom, was 32 - but we "matched", we were the tallest in our platoon, both 6ft 1. I dropped to 165lb by then. Strydom must have been around 190lb (pounds). Let me assure you; I SHAT OFF! No fond memories of those days. Going to the border (Caprivi) was okay - but not an easy time. At least we weren't mucked around any more.
Now, our history is an officially suppressed memory - we are old ex-soldiers. But we are soldiers without glory.
I am 6ft 5. Somehow after buddying I always ended up with the shortest guy in the platoon and the Cpl would have to sort it out.
I was fitter when I went into basics than when I came out.

The course at this training unit, 1 Maintenance Unit in Kimberley, was a three month course incorporated into second phase training, following immediately after three months of initial basic training.
This particular course was from October 1984 through December of that year.
@@majormanfredrex
Thank you for the answer.
Do you remember the layout / curriculum of it?
@@mrd7067 I am not able to help you there as I did the full set of second phase courses as part of an experimental development program for instructors.
I knew several of the the members who were on the course shown in this videos and recognize some of the faces that appear in it, including the course instructor, Sergeant "Titos" Nel.
I can tell you that a few of the elements of the course included were:
Driving and Maintenance.
Platoon Weapons
Squad Leadership
Military Clerical Protocol.
You are correct concerning the definition of "second phase"
Not every member followed every course to completion although all were given an overview of them.
The common elements were done together but they were divided into smaller groups each completing specialist training in one or other field.
In my case, my training actually took up a full two years. My actual deployment was in annual three month periods in which I was instructing new recruits or in front line units.
