  • Would you daily drive this controversial modified Datsun 240Z with Drift mode? In this episode Jonny Smith gets under the skin (and behind the wheel) of a bespoke built classic (divisive) Datsun Z that is a masterclass in upcycled modern hybrid and EV car components. There's been many 2JZ, RB26 and LS swapped Datsun 240s, but Silent Classics (www.silentclassics.co.uk) went down the EV muscle route for boss man Jack Kerridge's personal car. The attention to detail in exquisite.

I agree, but I don't think it's really a classic car at this point. It has grown into something new and different.
Having been in a 240Z, half of the experience (and joy, in my opinion) is the car vibrating lumpily at idle, the overwhelming stench of half-burnt petrol fumes, and arriving at your destination with a mild ringing in your ears.
I love the idea of evolving these cars with new technology, but it's just not quite the same.

    • @bunkaaa8726

Thats fine, you're allowed to not care, but I absolutely care, removing the noise of a 'fun' car is removing 50% of the enjoyment I get from it. I just don't see the point.
An EV van, daily commuter, grocery getter, kid hauler, fine but an EV classic sports car will 100% get boring quickly.

Great opening shot, however to tear the heart and soul out of such an iconic car as the 240Z is simply unforgivable. What is a classic car if not the sum of its parts. The parts that endeared the car to us in the first place. I think it's sad that someone who wasn't here in 1973 couid do this to such a classic. 😢

The thing is, as time goes on, the number of people willing to continually put in the time and money required to keep a classic car running, in it's original guise, becomes less and less. So whilst many of us might find putting an electric drivetrain in something like this a little disappointing, it's probably the only way this car will survive another 50 years... I'm still not completely sold on the idea of ev conversions, but I think I'm slowly coming round... Great video again Jonny 👍🏼

EV restorations are neat and usually really tasteful.
Feels like the self elected cars are those with subpar drivetrains; DeLorean? Murena? Rover Sterling?
Cars should express something of the driver when there’s this level of passion and commitment involved. I’m not a big EV fan but can seriously appreciate the engineering and sense behind this. That Bentley for example, the coach building is what sets that out and not the drivetrain. Seeing that sneak through London will be great!

Oh be still my heart! A big thanks for this episode, Jonny. My first car as a young man was an orange 1972 240Z. I was *so* disappointed with Nissan when they debuted the new Z. Why not electric? Good to see Silent Classics running with it. I'm happy driving my Tesla Model S, but it would be *so* much fun to also have a 240Z EV in the driveway...

Each to their own. It's not my car, but I would have an ICE. But the world would be boring if we all liked and wanted the same thing. Cheers for sharing, Jonny

I'd forgotten what a beautifully proportioned car the 240z was and thought it a shame to ev it but then the old Bentley made me laugh. It's better to give life to a classic and the discarded parts give life to other cars, then that classic is seen on the road to inspire younger generations to appreciate classic cars than to be kept as part of a collection unseen.
Nice one Jonny great show. 😊

Great video. Bit heavy on tyre wear. Drift mode on the Magic Roundabout very early one morning could be fun.😊

Wonderful craftsmanship and one of my all time favourite cars. Thanks for sharing. My ultimate electromod would have to be a Lamborghini Espada.

Beautiful restoration! I still love the sound of the original inline-six. Its nice to see that it's not "stanced" with the usual bolt on arch flares.

Thanks for this awesome review Jonny. It would be great if this vehicle, or another chassis could be designed with a modular battery pack so you could extend range when required for longer trips or in areas with poor charging infrastructure.

Fascinating - what a superb job they have done on this classic Z car it’s beautifully done.
    Great video very well filmed.
If the costs were not so high to do an EV conversion I’d want to do something light and sporty like an Ax GT or Hillman Imp.
I’d like to see what Silent Classics could do to something like a Lotus Elite/Excel or Scimitar GTE - all these cars worthy of having a thorough re-work as an EV.

Great video and such a fantastic car has been developed, looks so much fun, and probably more fun than the car was new from factory, love the need for such a robust LSD 🎉

Most EV conversions of classic cars Ive seen have been ruined by something goofy, the stance isn't right, or the wheel size is wrong, this one doesn"t compromise the original styling , beautiful job!!
