One of the most intriguing thing for me about the whole series, is the setting. SPOILER WARNING So, when you start out with the series, it feels like the typical "middle ages" kind of world, but as you get further into it, you notice details that tell us otherwise. The map in the beginning of the book shows us a part of Europe, with the sea level raised. The setting is in the future. The people of our time is called "the builders", and we had our downfall with "the year of thousand suns" - which I believe to be an atomic bomb war or something. The tall castle is a part of a skyscraper. The weapons under castle red are atom bombs. It's just amazing to discover the world and how he put it all together.

I find it a tricky question of liking an anti-hero. I can't like a character who does morally and unethical things but I can find them interesting from a point of view that are totally not like me, so what would it be like to be like them.

It was originally Jorge (like George) but Americans pronounce that as Hoor-Hey, so I lost the 'e'. In the US audio book they say Jorg as I would (because they asked me). I'm so happy I watched this review, it allowed me to give the book another chance. I started the book and I completely agree, the writing was jumpy and to be quite honest I can't even tell you what happened there. When I watched this I was just starting the book and when you lead on that it takes about 50 or so pages to become a little more settled in the writing, I realized it was worth my time. Thanks!

Yes, the dark secret hidden within the story! Was very difficult for me not to mention this in the reviews as I enjoyed it immensely but didn't want to spoil the surprise for people who read the book. I read a label for the film Wizards by Ralph Bakshi that described his film as 'science fantasy'. The same could be said here.

Actually, not that this matters much, but his name is actually Jorg - pronounced like Borg, but with a J sound. Think George, but with the hard “g” sound at the end. This is per Mark Lawrence from his blog. The UK audiobook did not ask him, while the US audiobook producer did ask Mark Lawrence how to pronounce it. But again, it really doesn’t matter much does it? Yorg sounds good to me, too

I liked the thorn implication. Spoiler: every time there was a reference to thorns he was being emotionally manipilated as a puppet. As if the author made us a promise that parts of the darkness was not from himself. So each time the thorns tugged at him and he wanted to kill or hurt others, his actual desire was the opposite, so for the second read I will be able to see clearer that he is warmer than what i initilly thought during first read

I REALLY recommend "Vivian Amberville - The Weaver of Odds" by Louise Blackwick - a recent and very popular release. YA fantasy, dystopian novel about a teenage girl who can alter odds and reshape events. I cannot begin to tell you how epic this novel is. It will blow your mind away. I hope you enjoy!

I like your review and I've been hesitant to read this book but worried it would be like "Series of Unfortunate Events" I got to book 5 and couldnt' read anymore. I love the cover too. What happens when you've read and watched Game of Thrones, and read all of Mark Lawrence's books, and Joe Abercrombie, and 20 odd other fantasy series?
"of thrones" and "of thorns"...I see what you did there. Of course, that's where the similarities end. I like these books, but it was a little bittersweet for me. Jorg (which you pronounce wrong) is hard to empathize with. Initially.
I thought the first book of this trilogy was pretty shit to be honest. The plot felt rushed, it needed to be longer and better paced. There is such a massive improvement between book 1 and book 2 though. I have no words to describe it. So I'll give Lawrence that. It certainly does get better. However. comparing this to George Martin's work is silly. Martain has several interweaving plots all going on at the same time, taking place all over his massive fantasy world, which is very well developed btw. Lawrence's books follow 1 main character, 1 main plot. so that's like comparing apples to oranges. Heavy weight story vs light weight story. Unfair to compare.

Do we ultimately care about the character? I'd say the Broken Empire Trilogy is in the same vain as Game of Thrones, albeit, on a lighter, simplified way.

They are great. 1977. Anti hero. Dark... very different than other fantasy. Colorful and original fantasy based. Read a synopisis. Im sure it would spark your interest.

The Bottled Imp Thank you. I am in the midst of reading the book right now. And I also have the same feelings in regard to having trouble sympathizing with the main character. But while I think he's doing evil things, I believe that he's afflicted emotionally based on the childhood trauma. It was through an online website that I first heard about the series. That was a while back, I'm just getting a chance to read it now. I really think you should do more book reviews though. I like your sensibility in this area. Also, I would love to see one on the vVgrant.

Just BORING or leaving the reader indifferent and not attached. The main character might be evil, mean or at least morally ambiguous but that could (should) be a bonus to make an intriguing story. Sadly Jorg is... boring. And as for the plot, quest, goal? Also boring, no urgency, no real sense of danger and since Jorg doesn’t appeal in any way... WHO CARES if he gets what he wants?? The other characters hardly evoke any emotion or curiosity. On paper there is potential but, also on paper, the story and dialogue is flat and without flavor. Sorry but all the potent ingredients in this stew have been used so much better by other writers. Imagine adult subjects and grim facts of life but told with the pace and vocabulary of a childrens book. Perhaps that is an achievement?
I know am 5 years late but I feel i have to give my opinion. I had to chuckle when you said the fantasy setting becomes really pronounced... it is actually a post-apocalyptic earth scenario
Im lucky enough to have read it in Polish which is the source language. From my experience a translation is always a castrated version of the original. However, besides some word play im guessing you wont miss much. The games, more or less, worked in English so the books should too.
I really enjoyed this book. It might have appealed to my shadow-self (as Jung would say), and although I knew I had to hate Jorg, the anti-hero, borderline villain, I was kinda mesmerized by him - a kid basically who turned all his life in favor of revenge, in a believable way. Was a bit let down later on when SPOILERS it turns out not all his actions were conscientiously his, but whatever. Also, I gained a great measure of respect for the author because he said he wrote this book during hospital breaks while taking care of his severely disabled daughter. Which might also account for the grimdark tone and the choppy writing style. Cheers, mate!

I think the best way to summarize the appeal of Jorg Ancrath is that he has many of the most compelling aspects of both Guts and Griffith

They are great. 1977. Anti hero. Dark... very different than other fantasy. Colorful and original fantasy based. Read a synopisis. Im sure it would spark your interest.

The Bottled Imp Thank you. I am in the midst of reading the book right now. And I also have the same feelings in regard to having trouble sympathizing with the main character. But while I think he's doing evil things, I believe that he's afflicted emotionally based on the childhood trauma. It was through an online website that I first heard about the series. That was a while back, I'm just getting a chance to read it now. I really think you should do more book reviews though. I like your sensibility in this area. Also, I would love to see one on the vVgrant.
Thank you Christ Power. Yes, Jorg is a tricky character to read and empathize with. I guess that proves or strengthens how the reader feels about their own morality.
Just BORING or leaving the reader indifferent and not attached. The main character might be evil, mean or at least morally ambiguous but that could (should) be a bonus to make an intriguing story.
Sadly Jorg is... boring. And as for the plot, quest, goal? Also boring, no urgency, no real sense of danger and since Jorg doesn’t appeal in any way... WHO CARES if he gets what he wants??
The other characters hardly evoke any emotion or curiosity. On paper there is potential but, also on paper, the story and dialogue is flat and without flavor.
Sorry but all the potent ingredients in this stew have been used so much better by other writers.
Imagine adult subjects and grim facts of life but told with the pace and vocabulary of a childrens book. Perhaps that is an achievement?
And that's the beauty of opinions, people can read/watch/listen to a book/film/music and have completely different reaction to it.
The less magic the better. None really in the first few books of asoiaf. Really liked it but its simply not at the Game of Thrones level.

Yes, took me a while to figure that out and I liked that it wasn't obvious from the start. It unfolded nicely. I was trying not to spoil it though!

Im lucky enough to have read it in Polish which is the source language. From my experience a translation is always a castrated version of the original. However, besides some word play im guessing you wont miss much. The games, more or less, worked in English so the books should too.

Well, it's more my trouble with spelling as I'm a European. But I know what you mean.
I really enjoyed this book. It might have appealed to my shadow-self (as Jung would say), and although I knew I had to hate Jorg, the anti-hero, borderline villain, I was kinda mesmerized by him - a kid basically who turned all his life in favor of revenge, in a believable way. Was a bit let down later on when SPOILERS it turns out not all his actions were conscientiously his, but whatever. Also, I gained a great measure of respect for the author because he said he wrote this book during hospital breaks while taking care of his severely disabled daughter. Which might also account for the grimdark tone and the choppy writing style. Cheers, mate!

Worst 50 first pages of any book I've read. Had no idea what was going on. Gave up shortly after that. Didn't seem to go anywhere.

I know what you mean. I saw it as jumpy but it does settle down and then takes off in a good way. I've found this with novel, especially debut novels, that the first 30 to 50 pages can be a little flighty and erratic then they settle down. Maybe give it another go?
