Currently reading A Game of Thrones. It is nice reading, contains emotions while the story slowly builds. The perspective increases in depth or height or both for individual characters. The past is also revealed because we need to know about the ice and the fire which overcomes everyone.
Agree with you 100%, I don’t even really read fantasy, and these books are the greatest story ever told! I’m a horror, mystery, police procedural, cia thriller reader. Preston & Child, Connelly, Flynn, Coben, Sandford, these are my guys. The Dark Tower can’t even touch these books, and Stephen King is my favorite writer of all time, but nothing he’s ever written can even touch these masterpieces. The first time I read the first book, by the time I finished the prologue, I couldn’t put it down, and that didn’t change all the way to the epilogue of Dance with Dragons.
Good stuff Bret and thanks for watching. That's saying something from someone who prefers horror and thrillers etc. Shows just how great these books are. So glad HBO did a fantastic job on the TV show too.
The best part is when I finished I started to look up ASOIF lore and theories on RUclips and I realized there was so much more to the story. So I read again and again. It's a deep well
Great review. Just started book 1, page 105 so far, and I'm totally in thralled so far. Never seen the TV series. Will buy it on DVD once I finish book 1.
Thanks Thomas. Glad you're liking book 1. It is extremely gripping. Every book is the same standard and the TV show does them justice. Look out for our Fire and Blood review early next year!
Great review! Subscribed! :) What i find incredibly exciting is to be alive while the series is still being written. To witness all the fan theories and general mysticism about this series. Being on the same page with everyone else of genuinely not knowing how the series going to end is just brilliant. So cool.
Jori Thank you Jori! Welcome aboard the good ship Imp! Yes, that's a great point. Feels like we're all on the adventure together (that's if we all survive!). Game of Thrones is by far one of the best fantasy series in history and to be living through it feels part of history. Hope you enjoy watching our other reviews and Imp extras!
DIE VIDEOBEHORDE Lol, yes, see what you mean by Gendry! Some think I look like Jamie! Thanks for your kind words. Yes, he's such a good writer, forget that it's fantasy, just good, solid writing. It's great that it is fantasy though!
I love your videos! ❤ Nice, you have you have the same copies as I do! George R. R. Martin has inspired me as a writer. He has shown me how much the imagination can stretch. If you can, please review the other four books!
I'm reading the first book now (the Bantam, trader edition, about the size of the large hardcovers). But I have just ordered the set you have. Fell in love with them in the few videos I've seen. Love how they don't have HBO plastered all over them👍
Brilliant, never got into the TV series but I remember reading it vividly. SPOILERS BELOW Big characters dying every 10 or so pages too, kept me hooked but the only other fantasy book from hand to keep me doing so was "The Redemption of Althalus" a novel by Leigh and David Eddings. Well worth a read. It is well written and based upon a professional thief tasked by a goddess to save the world from the goddess's evil brother. Little more on the lighter side but has some great descriptive writing to really create the environment. Keep it up looking forward to episode 4 :D
Thanks Sam for watching. Sorry for not replying sooner! Yes, hard to talk about GOT without wanting to say what happens! Not read 'The Redemption of Althalus'. Will check it out, sounds good. Episode 4 is live now! It's Peter V. Brett's book series 'The Demon Cycle'. The demons are coming!
Thanks! But at my slow analytical speed it'll take a while. Reading online theories made me pay extra attention to every sentence grrm writes and it is way more fun than the first read!
I loved the first three books but with the fourth things started to go down for me... :( Also I think Steven Erickson beated Martin in both epicness and scale, but Erickson's Malaz is a heavier fantasy with a lot more magic and mysticism so you will disagree if you prefer more historical and realistic fantasy. Nice review tho, keep it going!
+justsharki Ah, interesting. I didn't find that with ASoFI. Not read The Malazan Book of the Fallen series. I've added it to the ever increasing 'To Read' list! Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for the words of encouragement. All helps!
Great review, I'm just about to start reading this series. I've watched seasons 1-4 and half of season 5 so I decided to start reading the books. But when finished do you think I should wait till all the books are out before finishing the tv show?
***** Thanks Mathew. Glad you liked the review. Yes, it's a tricky one! Well, the next book, The Winds of Winter, has been due out for a few years but the author kept delaying it. As yet there is no publication date. So you may find series 6 of TV show comes out first anyway and you might not be able to resist. I watched series 1 of the TV show first then started the books so I was reading and watching them at the same time. I finished all the published books (1-5) before watching series 3. I found that my enjoyment of neither was spoilt. It was interesting to note the differences. Plus I had forgotten things I'd read about so certain things were still a surprise. You're going to read and watch both anyway so I'd say it probably won't matter. Hope that helps.
Yeah thanks, I'm a 100 pages into A Game of Thrones and I'm loving it even though the series is very close to the first book. I'll see when it's closer to season six air date. Thanks again for the reply.
Ah, cool. Yes, series 1 and book 1 are pretty much the same. As is series 2 and book 2. Books 3, 4 and 5 however do differ to TV series. One thing I love about the books is each chapter is told from the character's point of view so you really get into their thoughts! My pleasure! Good to talk fantasy.
Thanks for the great spoiler free review! just got the last full set (6) in display from the store last weekend and I'm looking forward to reading them. see you all in Westeros! hehe oh *like and sub!* keep up the great content 👍
Thanks Jefferson. Ah, really tough question but A Song of Ice and Fire is certainly near the top, if not at the top. I think I need to do my Top 10 Fantasy Books list! Maybe next year?
+R. Ah, glad you love them. They're amazing! Yes, these books are dense and intense! I'm a fairly slow reader too but I see that as a good thing as I feel like I really soak up each page and exist within the story. Take your time and enjoy them. I didn't want them to end!
I wish I could meet you in real life, your such the nerdy nerd. you and I would get along just GreAt! also...when I call you a nerd, its a compliment, cause I call myself a nerd. and trust me, its only because I'm smart, and I can see your very very smart as well. XD😂sorry if I annoy you, I'm just in love with your videos and your accent. are you British or Scottish?
+Peregrin Took Aww, that's very kind of you. Well, all my family are from Scotland but my brother and I were born in England so I guess that makes me English with Scots blood. But British covers it all!
The Bottled Imp I knew it, your accent, it sorta reminded me of Billy Boyd. Haha and from my profile pic you can tell I love him, I can also play Last Goodbye on my acoustic guitar.
I only have 30 days to watch the show from season 3 episode 1 to the end of season 5. But I really want to read the other 3 books before the seasons but 5 books is alot to read in 30 days. Do you think it is even worth stressing about that or does the tv show really not ruin the show too much? (By other 3 books I mean I have read none of them but have seen 2 seasons of the show so I feel those books are already ruined)
I'm not sure if you decided to read the first three books or not, but coming from someone who watched the tv series before I read the books, I have to say that you 100 PERCENT should read the books. While the first book is very similar to the tv shows first season, after that there are complete story lines and characters omitted entirely from the tv show. Not only this, but when you read the books, you are able to understand the universe that much more and the detail that the books are written in help you literally dive in. A Storm of Swords (the 3rd book which season 3 and 4 are based on) is an absolute masterpiece.
Amazing review! Definitely going to go buy the first book now :) Ever considered reviewing Tolkien's work? Also, subscribed, liked, and shared! Thanks for the content! Going on a binge now!
Darius "Just Another Atheist" M Hi Darius, thanks for your kind words and subscribing. Yes, you won't be disappointed with Game of Thrones. So good! I read the books back to back and loved every page. Also reviewed the board game too. Tolkien - the grandfather of fantasy! Yes, that's one the list to review. NOt sure when as I want to do it justice. Enjoy more Bottled Imp and welcome to the Fellowship of Imps!
The Bottled Imp Exactly, people cannot deny that Tolkien's work was the pioneer of fantasy, and has now become a cliche in terms of good vs evil, however the only mutual factor of both series is the fact that they are fantasy, beyond they are completely different, mostly due to the target audience.. Regrettably, I simply cannot go back to LOTR due to the realism and complexity of ASOIAF.
True. Fantasy owes a massive debt to Tolkien and regularly over shadows the genre. But yes, ASOIAF is more complex and more sophisticated. I've not reviewed LOTR for The Bottled Imp yet so I'm going to read them to get them fresh in my mind!

Good stuff! And I must read some Brandon Sanderson!
I really love TV show and decided to give books a chance. Hope I'll finish them all before show ends and Winds of winter comes out.

Yeah, HBO nails the books. So excited by the next book!
Thank you for this review, it helped me write an essay about these wonderful books.

Could you do a review for the Ranger's Apprentice series. It's a wonderful and pretty light-hearted series compared to ASOIAF though

Thank you Ethan. Cool! Really hope you enjoy them. Take it chapter at a time. Let me know how you get on.
You have a very distinct voice. Like a blend of David Beckham and Chris Packham.
