Krupa was so important, to the evolution of the modern day rock drummer, this guy should be placed in the RRHOF, because he was truly the first rock n roll drummer, before rock was ever invented.

Gene Krupa made every member of the band sound 1000% better when he played. He played for the song and the band, and he elevated it all to a whole new level.
Gene Krupa, had a tremendous impact on every drummer that followed him, not just in the playing of the drum set, but in musical performance, he was also an entertainer.. there really is a difference between a musician and an entertainer... combine the two, and you get players who become stars, like Gene. I don't think there has ever been a more exuberant drummer, until say, Keith Moon, at least that I'm aware of. On these now 80 year old clips- his FEEL comes out of my computer monitor... like makes me want to go play my bass.. an amazing thing. I URGE any of you watching this, to find "Ball Of Fire" The movie is really great. The scene that follows the "Drum Boogie" production number, with Krupa in a booth with some of the cast, singing the words, and him playing "Drum Boogie" on a matchbox, is just wonderful.

I absolutely love the style and panache of Gene’s drumming& the sound of his kit also has an excitement all of its own. He swings & man does he do so. He is also a very musical player not just power-housing as of here. To round it all off he was a fine showman too. Yes he was also a fore runner of rock & roll & I dig all that too but dunno what Gene himself thought. I think he would have been kind. In the meantime GK was integral to the great swing era. The great Buddy Rich, another phenomenal drummer once said “Could you imagine jazz without Gene Krupa”? He was spot on, for it really would be unimaginable. Yours in drums Chris 🥁
Sal Mineo played Gene in the movie about Gene's life and he had when he was young banging around the house. Sal did a great job. I took lessons but stopped around 18 but lucky to keep the beat I still tap my fingers like I did at 13 14 years old I'm 75 now.
Gene had far more charisma than Buddy. He was my favorite and the father of the drum solo.Also a great gentleman with class. Gene was much better in his younger days, not saying better than Buddy, just better himself, before life and illness began to slow him down.. It's a shame the whole Buddy Gene drum battles came out later in Genes life when he had lost a step. I would like to have seen such a battle in Gene's hey day.
💯 Buddy might have been a better technical drummer but he was an ahole and he couldn't touch krupa's charisma and the fact that Krupa was an Buddy loved Krupa and looked up to him He had that natural thing going on. And a great personality which Buddy did not have.

B.Rich for me was a little bit of a circus act....great showmanship to please the crowd with flamboyant virtuoso speed, but not to much of an artistic input....while Krupa mixed it all, great touch, felling, groove and showmanship.....ofr me the real pioneer of modern drumming. Buddy Rich was great, but you can't really comare his artistic legacy with the ones of Krupa, Joe Morello, Elvin Jones or Art Blakey

I don't concern myself with whether Buddy or Gene was "better." I've always loved them both, I'll continue to listen to the music of each of them. And I suspect that the rest of civilization will too, for as long as there still is civilization.
You can see the guys in the first clip have their eyes glued to Gene, even while they're playing themselves! Massive smiles on every one of them as well. I couldn't imagine what it was like to see this man in his element.

Purely accessible brilliance which can clearly be understood by ANYONE with drums in their soul. Of all drummers I've heard Gene Krupa reverbrerate with me the most. Must be his style which I can understand and feel in my bones. It is a visceral style in that the beat goes down the hip area and impels one off the rocker chair.

Check out the facial expressions for one thing. In some instances, they are almost a mirrored image of themselves. Looking at Gene in this compilation, it is as if an invisible force takes over & he's crossed one boundry into the next. You can see the same thing in Keith Moon. Gene was truly a man in "tune" with his drums.

When I was a kid there was an on going debate who was the best Gene or Buddy Rich, Both have there own style, but for me it was always Gene Krupa, he just looks so damn cool while he plays. and Rich always seemed angry while playing. I could watch Gene all day. Incredible talent.

I'm a Buddy Rich fan. Nobody had the speed, power, or technical ability he possessed, and he, for that reason, will always be the best ever. But Gene was also a one off. He especially for the era in which he came to prominence was untouchable. His solos were musical as well as technical plus they had a pulse, which unless you are dead had you tapping your feet. Add to that he was a splendid showman...so even if you didn't know what he was playing and how good he was you could still enjoy his performance. A brilliant drummer.....

Peter Criss is one of my biggest influences to play drums, and i heard Gene Krupa was his influence. Watching that i understand why Peter loves him so much, superb drummer!
Carl Palmer and Neil Peart both mentioned how influential he was to their drumming. No doubt he provided the template for the flamboyant drummer who took over a stage.
Was it Anita? My best friend in high school, her mom was best friends with Anita. All three of them were lesbians. God I was only 16… If not Anita who was it?
The first clip is the greatest example of a drummer who can play for a top band and at the same time capture an audience, out of pure love for the instrument.
Everybody compared him to Buddy but they were completely different drummers. Buddy was a technical wizard who will never be duplicated but he wasn’t as great at driving a band. (He would tell you different, of course, but recordings don’t lie). And Gene wasn’t nearly as technical but he had amazing showmanship and he could push the hell out of a band and was renowned as a dance floor favorite.
Gives me warm feeling to know he was an American with clean Polish blood. Unusual Polish temperament. Actually Poland does not advertise it self but people even do not know where the graduation hats come from. Gene Krupa the original first best drummer in spotlight.

Gene couldn't keep up with Buddy at any age as far as speed. That said, I like his STYLE way more than Buddy, Krupa charisma!

Peter Criss is one of my biggest influences to play drums, and i heard Gene Krupa was his influence. Watching that i understand why Peter loves him so much, superb drummer!

Carl Palmer and Neil Peart both mentioned how influential he was to their drumming. No doubt he provided the template for the flamboyant drummer who took over a stage.
There is something “Orgasmic” about the way that he plays. I bet that he had a good time.

The first clip is the greatest example of a drummer who can play for a top band and at the same time capture an audience, out of pure love for the instrument.

Everybody compared him to Buddy but they were completely different drummers.
Buddy was a technical wizard who will never be duplicated but he wasn’t as great at driving a band.
(He would tell you different, of course, but recordings don’t lie).
And Gene wasn’t nearly as technical but he had amazing showmanship and he could push the hell out of a band and was renowned as a dance floor favorite.
