  • Ingmar Bergman plumbs the depths of his childhood to tell the tale of a family in Uppsala. Episode 1 ("The Ekdahl Family Celebrates Christmas") finds them in the midst of the holidays. There is the matriarch Helena and her former lover and family friend Isak Jacobi. There is the eldest son Gustav Adolf with his wife Alma and his secret sexual entreaties to a family maid/nanny Maj. There is son Oscar and his wife Emilie, who run the family theater and perform the nativity play. They are the parents of Alexander and Fanny. And finally, there is youngest son Carl and his German wife Lydia. Their constant fighting and Carl's repeated financial troubles plague the family.
Christmas is a time for revelry and a time for staying up far too late, relitigating old family wounds. It's also a time for ghosts to slip into the quiet hours, bubbling just beneath the surface.
Widely considered one of, if not Bergman's masterpiece, Fanny and Alexander spans four episodes and over 300 min. Watched in its entirety, it is counted as one of the longest theatrical films of all time.
(Please note these are impressions from first time viewings, unless otherwise stated. If my points come across ill-constructed, inane, or otherwise unconvincing, muh bad bruh.)

I love this (the full tv version of course). It's so richly filmed and acted. Great that you've done a reaction to it! Thank you very much for doing these
Have you seen the behind the scenes documentary that was made during the filming? Very interesting

I really appreciate you reacting to this. I would love for us to celebrate Christmas like we ones did. We celebrated Christmas like this In the 80’s and 90’s, but after some of our patriarchs went to sleep it’s not the same. And I believe it’s very much the same in most Swedish homes nowadays.
4 days to Christmas so I want to wish you a Happy one. 🙏🏼✝️🌟🎅🏻⛄️🎄🇸🇪

Looking forward to the rest of your reaction to this masterpiece.
Have you seen Lars von Triers The Kingdom? I would love for someone to react to that.

I never really got into Bergman either until I watched Wild Strawberries. Though obviously I'm by no means an old man like Isak Borg in the film it's something that struck me so personally that I don't even put it on my "top 5" or "top 10" movies whenever someone asks me, as in terms of personal connection it really has no comparison or relation to the other movies in a meaningless ranking system

4:18 Your first pronunciation of Ekdahl was much better than your "corrected" one.
    It's a long eeh-sound. So like "eeh+k+dal", rather than "eck+dal".
