Agreed! For the most part, all the characters feel lived in and their relationships can be understood. Nobody feels forced in for dramatic or mechanical purposes.
Seeing Oskar’s ghost in a red room reminds of Jane Eyre, when the titular character as a child gets locks in a red room. The red room in the Charlotte Brontë novel is the same room where Jane’s maternal uncle died.
