CAPABLANCA CHESS

- Featured is a brief introduction for the chess variant Capablanca Chess along with a 10+5 game I played against Fairy-Stockfish level 5 on pychess.org. I've only been playing this variant for a few days now, and it feels like it has been stretching my mind. Capablanca chess (or Capablanca's chess) is a chess variant invented in the 1920s by World Chess Champion José Raúl Capablanca. It incorporates two new pieces (chancellor/archbishop) and is played on a 10×8 board. Capablanca believed that chess would be played out in a few decades (meaning games between grandmasters would always end in draws). This threat of "draw death" for chess was his main motivation for creating a more complex version of the game.
I'm a self-taught National Master in chess out of Pennsylvania, USA who was introduced to the game by my father in 1988 at the age of 8. The purpose of this channel is to share my knowledge of chess to help others improve their game. I enjoy continuing to improve my understanding of this great game, albeit slowly. We need a Capablanca or grand chess random 5 d variant. Then we will never have to worry about opening theory being played out.
Until 2027
@@liamartinproductions sorry, I should have said it won’t be played out for non enhanced humans that are keep by the AI’s in the people zoo.
I wanna call them nishop and rooght
Pronounced "rooft" or is the gh still silent?
absolutely love the concept of archbishop and chancellor. seems like the value of the chancellor is about the same as a queen, similar to the relationship between knight and bishop. And archbishop is around a 6-7 (so better than a rook but not as valuable as the queen). Would love to see more!
I think the queen is still the most valuable just because it covers way more squares. I also suppose that a bishop would be more valuable than a knight on a 10x8, as it can go from one side to the other in 2 moves max while itqy take a knight up to 4 moves. Playing on both sides of the board seems just way easier than it be on an 8x8, with bishop vs. knight
Mind bending and fun to watch--enjoyed this one, Jerry.
Thank you Jamie. 😎
💙💛Thank you Jerry for sharing this gem. I had no idea that there's a website where I could play this variant of chess. So far - enjoying it a lot. Even playing against computer is much more fun than the regular chess, because the pieces are so tricky and combinations sometimes are just unpredictable.
Also - big thanks to you and your work. I've been watching and enjoying your videos for many years already. Happy to see you still posting and also enjoying the game.
Great to see. It definitely forces the brain into new territory that Fischer960 cannot.
YES! I always loved your variant videos! Thank you for the great content as always Jerry!
Easily my favorite videos from your channel are your commentaries, your variant games, and you analysis of master games. Thank you for all the fun and education!
I enjoy playing Gothic (Trice) Chess online, which is similar, but with a different arrangement of pieces on the back rank. I really like the very logical extension the new pieces bring, given that a Queen is essentially just a Rook + Bishop already.
thank you for the video! i'd be really excited for more capablanca chess videos, or for more variant videos in general such as grand chess or other things on pychess. either way i have loved your videos over the years!
Do you agree Capablanca's prediction will come to pass at some point, and these more complex variations will increase in popularity, maybe even surpassing regular chess some day?
I think they've gone as high as they could (since computers and internet made it easy for interested players to pair up, eliminating the need for custom chess sets etc.)
for 99.99% players classic chess is as fun as it ever was, they don't experience "draw death" and don't memorize openings up to move 30.
chess variants have ALWAYS existed. it's not like the classic one prevailed just because. it stood the test of time against countless competitors. it's like regular sex :) variants are there to spice things up now and then, SOME may swear by those,, but the default way won't go anywhere.
No. 960 is slowly gaining momentum, but anything more than that will never go anywhere
To an extent they’ll probably gain a niche following, but for 99% of people, vanilla chess is already extremely complicated.
also note how the trend has notably shifted. these days there's fewer "radical" variants with fantastic pieces, non-standard board sizes etc.(like Caoablanca chess).
960, which once seemed quite conservative (apart from the initial setup, all rules are pretty much preserved) became actually one of the more radical deviations in the current landscape.
the variants people consider now are more like the ones proposed by Kramnik, tested with Alpha Zero: all the same but no castling... all the same but pawns can always move by 2 squares,... this sort of thing: very modest (if impactful) alterations of the classical ruleset.
@@vibovitold yep, agree, and I think that’s for good. Smart men add, wise men subtract.
960 looks to be the closest solution to the openings theory memoization problem though. No castling is just not enough.
However I’d still simplify a few things in 960 to make it more practical in attempt to make it more widely used. E.g. fix rooks and kings in place to make castling obvious and only shuffle bishops, knights, queens.
This was fun. Cool to see almost going back to basics and looking at opening theory, stuff like that
Please make more videos about this chess..I was looking where to play it, now I now..
Have you been playing any other variant? I would like to see you making videos on other variants, your commentaries are very insightful and your playlist on beginner to master was superb!!
Thanks. Yes, other more common variants yes like 3-check.
I have a physical set of this, insanely fun to play, and the pieces are beautiful.
Where did you get it? I’m having trouble finding one for a decent price
Thank you for this video! I've always wondered what this game was like ever since I heard of it in a book about Capablanca.
I would like to see such chess variants gain more traction especially for computer chess as computers will draw so many games it's as if the game isn't complicated enough for them to struggle (although of course they do, otherwise they wouldn't lose)
4 way chess would be way better if you replaced the Knights with a Chancellor & Archbishop 🐴
Why not Capablanca 4-way chess? :D
that little giggle at 5:10 made me smile 😉
come to think of it that might be the first time I've actually seen a game of Capablanca chess played. Seen the rules explained .. but actually it makes much more sense in action. Was surprisingly enjoyable to watch, and there is this sense of space, which is quite interesting.
Now you can make Capablanca's Gun. It has more bullets pew pew
This was very cool.
Knook.

Knishop Who?
Thank you for the video. I have the chess set and board from House of Staunton. I haven't tried to play the game. Years ago I asked a chess-playing friend if he would play Musketeer chess, but he said no because he thought chess was hard enough for him.
Duck chess when?
intriguing. i found this on wiki as a basic orientation point. at least it gives a rough idea what to trade and what not.
pawn 1
knight 3
bishop 3.5 (+0.5 for the bishop pair)
rook 5
archbishop 8.75
chancellor 9
queen 9.5
Love the variants, thank you . Please upload more of three check and horde!
anybody ever play capablanca/fischer combined? what a mess that would be...
KNOOK! OMG ITS REAL!
It’s the original Seirawan chess! Nice. I like this version and your break down and understanding of the play is fun to watch.
cool variant. havent seen it before
very interesting new pieces
At 13:14, can Nxa5 Rb2 be met by Nxc7 threatening Rxg7 and Ne6 ideas?
This was fun! I'd like to see another game sometime.
Didn't even know this existed. Very cool. Gg wp Jerry
That’s a Knook
And the knishop
If you plan on playing more pychess variants I'd recommend Shogun Chess. It introduces the fairy pieces in a way I haven't seen elsewhere: the initial setup is just like regular chess, but you have the option of promoting pieces if you move them into the final three ranks, much like in shogi. The game feels a lot like regular chess despite all the new possibilities, it's kind of the best of both worlds.
Great video, fun variant :)
I enjoyed this format Jerry.
Something different 😁
I think it helps your chess in a similar way that 960 does.
Maintaining the stretchiness of your plastic brain.
yeah it gives you experience with weird positions, meaning you can push for weird positions in your regular games
Didn't knew this one, interesting, indeed may go hand in hand witn regular ones
Could watch more of this
The opening issues looks very similar to Shogi, I like :D
maybe 960 Fischer Random could also fix top level draw occurrence issue with traditional chess? i feel like 960 looks a bit more standard and could possibly attract more of the general chess population. To support my statement, right now there is 960 world championship with top level players competing, including Carlsen, Nakamura, So, Nepo, not to mention the other GMs
@Jerry : I thought up two pieces called 1. The Prince and 2. The Princess !!!! They stand next to the Queen and King !!!! And can move up to three squares in any direction !!!! The board would expand accordingly , with 10 pawns !!!! .....................
Love this variant! Can you imagine the world's top players playing a Capablanca tournament? I would give one of my paychecks to see that
that would kill the commentators, having no engine to analyze the positions.
i've always been so excited at the idea of top players playing OTB Grand Chess (10x10 variant similar to capablanca). I know it's not the same as capablanca chess but both would be cool on some level!
@@vibovitold chess commentators got along just fine for many years without engines and some still do today. It’s actually more interesting when everyone watching has to figure out who has the advantage
Interesting variant. So many combinations. I'd like to see Alpha Zero play this variant.
I don't think it makes any difference if your watching stockfish or alpha zero, the moves will probably make just as little sense anyway
The bot that he is playing against in the video, Fairy Stockfish, is one of the strongest variant chess engines in the world. Its level 5, so it was easier to beat, but Fairy Stockfish level 8 would possibly surpass the best humans at capablanca chess. Its at the point where it even has its own neural networks (NNUE) for each of the variants it supports. Fairy Stockfish 14 combined with its neural network might surpass AlphaZero. I would really hope to see a matchup of AlphaZero and Fairy Stockfish like that, but I doubt it will happen.
@@sam2725 haha, you're probably right. But I still want to be amazed after some crazy combination : )
@@clausable6328 Obviously the machines play at a much higher level than any human mind. I would still be interested to watch, even if I can't figure out the intent behind every move.
Great showcase, mate! Really enjoyed seeing the strategy and early game observations
please post the link for where we can play this
If you type just 'pychess' in the searchbar you will find it immediately, it takes u like 5 seconds.
You can find the searchbar on top of your internet browser.
Looks like a cavalry kind of battle here🐴🦄🦓!
It sucks that the knights are farther away from the center, the now c and h files would be the ideal starting squares.

Hello Jerry I am a Casual Chess Player but Have Accumulated More Than 500 Wins Against THe A.i. on Chess Pro on my phone At The Hardest Level With No Time Limits, How Could i Send u These Games 4 Analyses Maybe ????
Computer played bc7 as you were able to pick up a free pawn on c5 as recapture leads to queen check and then pick up the bishop on a5. Why the computer played ba5 in the first place is the bigger mystery hahah
My thoughts too. Free pawn. If not, lots of lost material. No obvious comp for stockfish
love you Jerry. Thanks for teaching us pure chess.
12:52
Can you take on g8 and then g7 here?
Very nice
You can but is an arch bishop more valuable than a rook + knight? I'm not familiar with this variant so I have no idea.
@@wpt729fx I wouldn't think so. Plus you're getting an attack on the king.
13:18 Axa5 should be possible because after Rb2 you have the shot Axc7. If rook takes queen you have Rxg7! Rxg7 Ae6#
that is losing material: queen and bishop for queen and archbishop
Nice find!
I'd love to see more videos and streams of this, this is a really cool variant!
Excellent Jerry. Have been waiting for you to play some form of “Great Chess”. Good game, too, btw.
really enjoyed this, thanks jerry
Estimados colegas del Ajedrez. Serīan tan amables de decirme donde puedo adquirir un Chess Set de 40 piezas, como lo sugirió JR Capablanca. Mil gracias!!
If the queen is worth 9 points, the rook 5, bishops and knights 3, how much is the chancellor and archbishop worth?
8 and 6 (additive) would be sensible.
@@Aesculus1989 Then the queen should be worth 8 points too. I haven't played yet but I'd guess 8-9 and 7 are more appropriate. Pieces that are part bishop benefit a lot from their counterpart by being able to visit both colors, so should get an extra point over addition. I'd guess there's some similar synergy for the chancellor as well
8 and 7(.5) not 8 and 6
@@dizzybananas conventional chess has queens worth 9, Rooks 5, Bishops 3 and knights 3. I was trying to put it into that framework. I have also seen it argued that bishops are worth 3.5.
However, I agree on the ability to switch colors being a major advantage and the inability of a bishop to do so is probably what limits them to only being worth 3 points in international chess. So, I agree that 7 is probably a better value than 6.
@@Aesculus1989 Seirawan thinks it's more like 7 and 9
Is the Knight/Bishop chimera called the *Krakken* ? Asking for a squid ;-)
No, its called the arch-bishop
Thank you for showcasing this site. Potentially interesting to have an AI to try and play chess variants against.
Whatever happened to Omega Chess? That crossed my radar some years ago, but did not buy a board while they made them, sadly. Wish I had for the different pieces and board, even if it didn't exactly last as its own game.
Super cool variation!
I really enjoy watching this kind of chess. Nice game! 👏 👏 👏
5 seconds in and I am already excited! 😃
Can you take the pawn on c5 at 7:50 due to the fork of king and bishop?
looks like it!
black wouldn't take back with the pawn! bishop would go to b6 and forces a bishop exchange. whites bishop is way better and it is not worth the pawn
@@KralleZ7 But Bxb6 Axb6 is good for White. c5 is a good pawn that controls the center, and winning it also makes Black's d-pawn permanently backward. Totally worth trading bishops!
Does anyone know how to play against computer with handicap advantage on lichess?
Edit board with the handicap then continue from here -> play against computer
Great narrative! Thank you!
No words, my mind is blown. At one point I was like there's a free pawn here then I remembered there are "mutated monstrosities" on the board 😆😆
Would be really great if variants were played like variants and thought of as variants. Even in 960 people try a weird 'English' or whatever opening there is. Trying to turn the variant back into normal chess, which I suppose what the whole thing the variant tried to stop.
You win a piece with Nh5 at 13:00 maybe ?
The rook is defended by the archbishop though, I think Jerry just wanted no complications
Did you consider 13. Bxc5? Winning two pawns from what i saw. Fun variant to play!! Gonna try this out soon
Hi Jerry it's everyone
It should’ve been 10x10
That would be Grand Chess then (also available on Pychess)
@@CouchTomato87 no I tried that, only rooks are on back rank, I meant 10x10 instead of 8x10 shown here
@@CouchTomato87 I have a weird idea, what if we also add centaurs (K+N) to the game? Would that be interesting?
@8;33 ykin should have given check with queen then easily you could have attacked rook (black rook)
Since 12:17 to 14:02 he could’ve taken the rook with his Archbishop on H8. Then stock fish would’ve taken back with his archbishop and then you take the undefended night on H7
Gothic chess (or Trice's Chess) resolves the I-pawn weakness by placing the Queen on the D file, Chancellor on the E file, and Archbishop on the G file. That way, all pawns are protected by at least one piece at the start of the game. If select "Alternate Start" when creating a game on PyChess, you can select Gothic chess and other variants (e.g., Bird's chess).
I see the notification, I click!
Sadly, almost noone's playing on that website.
slowly it will gain more popularity
@@dabadaba5847 it should be, there are a lot of amazing variants there
Chancellor & Queen are worth the same: 9 points. Chancellor (Rook + Knight) & Queen (Rook + Bishop)
Chansellor is like a 2nd queen in power. About same value :)
Yes ! Variant Chess has also reached to Jerry! Take a look at Gothic Chess ( flawless opening) and Seirevan Chess - they are similar :)
Seems Capa had a stake at a carpentry making chess boards. Otherwise how would you explain a 10x8 board? :$
On a serious note, converting one bishop and knight to 1 kbishop and knook sounds like a more organic idea.
looks like something from r/anarchychess
Way too normal imo
Very cool !
Amazing
A 10x10 board might be interesting too
"grand chess" has that! i think it's really well-designed, it's also featured in pychess.
It takes too long to get some action. Also the regular knights are slow and decrease in value way more than the regular bishops - pieces which can go across the 10x10 board in a flash
Thats pretty wild ❤
14:40 Qa2 was more simple
good spot!
Followed by Ae7, then Rg8# (double check, checkmate)
oo very interesting!
nice game. stockfish 5 is obviously not up to your level.
dont yell at me jerry
Didn’t Bobby Fischer say Capablanca’s chess had 2 kings? And that it was on a 10 by 10 board?
Man I just found out about seirwan or whatever its spelled like now there's this?? And what the hell is duck chess?????
I see we have a Rosen watcher. Me too!
and the variant: jumbo-chess. there is a camel, that can jump further than the knight 😅
Fun
They should combine this with crazy house.... Lol. Jk, but this looks like a lot of fun!
i just checked, and they apparently do have that on pychess! they also have capablanca + 960, and capablanca + 960 + crazyhouse, and other variants with knightrook and bishoprook (grand chess and s-chess/seirawan chess).
@@dabadaba5847 that's just crazy!
Jerry must have been on r/anarchychess this week 😉 the knook is so hot right now
