THANKS for this tutorial. Extremely helpful. Worked fine on my mk6 R when I needed to change a broken xenon lamp (yes i changed both at the same time). As one wrote earlier I actually didn’t need to remove the bumper completely. I unscrewed all the screws as described in the video except the ones under the bumper. Then worked on one side at a time.
This video was a great help for me as we moved form Germany to UK for a year and than back. So I had to replace the headlamps and it would be not possible without this tutorial. Thank you so much, ghostlyrich!
To remove the headlights on the MK6 golf/GTI/rabbit you only need to remove the 4 grill screws then the 2 bumper screws behind the grill then the 10 wheel well screws (5 each side of the bumper/car) you can then pull the bumper at the wheel well out to the side and then forward a little then move it down slightly below the level of the headlight, after removing the 8 screws holding the headlight housings (4 per side, 2 on top, 1 that was behind the grill, and 1 at the back near the bulb dust cover) carefully pull the headlight forward over the bumper, (tackle one side at a time as there is not enough give in the bumper for both sides to flex at once), you DO NOT need to remove any of the screws under the bumper, don't forget to unplug the headlight before removing the headlight screws as it is difficult if the light is able to move.
Awesome! I only had to undo the left side of the bumper and the top screw under the right bumper near the fender. Was able to remove both headlights and access both fog lights from there. Thanks and to cfbm125 also.
@5:28 in the video, what is that black plastic/rubber ring inside the headlight? I bought the same headlights and I think that may be the missing piece to install my turn signal bulbs.
Pulling that small, front grill is a bit scary! You gotta pull those plastic tabs out really hard! Mine released with a loud "CRACK!" I thought I'd surely broken some plastic, but all was fine. Same with bumper, when it was time to pull it off the tabs held fast & I had to use a plastic scraper to release them. I also had a hell of a time unplugging the two headlights, the plug was incredibly tight & I had to use a vise grip. It's a bigger & longer job & more work than a video will make it out to be, but it's not difficult.
I'm new to this but please answer if you see this! I'm looking to buy an aftermarket Mk7 style headlight for this exact year/model GTI. (I'm from canada as well.) Was the only problem with the GTI the difference of a 10 pin vs. 12 pin connector on the R? There wasn't any fitment issue with the transfer of the HID? If you still have this car, there's a new company called ElectroEzzy that's claiming to have a Mk7 style headlight that will work for our cars with the projector headlights. Apparently our headlights with the adaptive lighting assist is incompatible with all the aftermarket headlights but I just wasn't sure why it wasn't compatible. (Connector, or actual bulb fitment. Hopefully you can fill me in!)
Hey You got BC plates! I'm thinking of fitting 2012+ GTI lights in my 2011 (my Xenons hazed up the housing for some reason... and I like LEDs) Shot in the dark but you wouldn't at all be willing to help would you? :^)
It's more the trim level than TSI. These should work on your standard golf that doesn't use hid headlights you just have to double check when purchasing that they'll work with your headlight style so for example if you don't have factory HIDs make sure you tell that to the place where you're purchasing them or if you do have factory HIDs confirm again because there's a different pin out amount

Unfortunately, I sold them already :(
Great vid. Just changed my headlight in less than half an hour following this. Thanks

cfbm125 Thanks to OP and you. You saved me a ton of time with this. This works perfect, so you don't have to completely remove the bumper.

Appreciate your efforts! It makes me think I will pay someone to do that if I need a new headlamp :)
Any tips for if the headlight plug clips are broken (were broken before we even bought the car)

If I understand this correctly you don't actually need to remove the bumper?
Shane Harris exactly what I thought lol

Would this fit a TSI?

Thanks. U r awesome bro.
Unfortunately it didn't work
I wanted to the switch that u tried. But now i wont lol
I believe those are already golf r headlights and you we’re going to gti headights since the golf r has only one set of drl’s on the bumper grills
can I put that hole front end on a 2005 VW Jetta
you might need to do the fender panesl as well and some body work to make it align up right but anything is possible.
Jesus fuck volkswagen. Worlds most secure headlight housing. Thanks for the vid though. Would have never figured this out.
Lucky you who can say... do this and this and THATS IT. Lol.. i was thinking abt taking off the headlight to fix a bulb...but now.. never mind.
Missed 4.04 till 4.13 did you ffwd and spent too much time on the purple connector
what's HID ballas.
Well this is fcking ridiculous you have to take the bumper off to do the headlights.
Tri pod and slower movement speak slower i had to stop watching
