I was lucky enough to see NIN twice in concert. Trent Reznor has gone on to win Oscars for scoring movies and NIN was inducted in the R&R Hall of Fame a few years back. The music of my youth.
I imagine I am close to her brothers age because when NIN came on the scene it was like woahhhh hello!!!! It was a staple in the more industrial goth type clubs before going more mainstream. Although I really never think of that band as mainstream at all. Such a unique sound with really danceable tracks and just intense music that makes you feel lots of things! Its a band I hold near and dear! They were pioneers.
NIN is industrial/rock and heaily inspired by Depeche mode so good job connecting them. NIN heavily uses synthesizers, samplers, and manipulation effects.
As soon as this popped up, I had to watch it immediately! Couldn't wait to see your expressions when the chorus 😂 Listen to Head Like a Hole. It's a lot different than Closer and cleaner!
I purchased this Nine Inch Nails CD because I loved the music when it was on MTV. I was surprised when the song was uncensored compared to the version they played on regular cable TV at the time. The CD had several versions on the CD single. This was just before summer 1994.
Welcome to industrial rock. Trent Reznor(lead singer, played most of the instraments, wrote the songs) is a musical genius. He's branched out to movie soundtracks and scores and even won an oscar. Check out head like hole next, it was the first song most of us heard from this group.
He's actually got an Emmy, three Grammies, and an Oscar. One Tony award away from EGOT status. Supposedly he's working on a stage version of _Fight Club_ with David Fincher, so a Tony isn't out of question at this point.
In the mid 90s I was in college and took a music appreciation class for my elective. The professor was very obviously into 20th century classical. One day after class I went to his office and played for him The Becoming from this record. I had this entire screed as to why I thought it was inspiring and just wanted to bounce my ideas off him. Not only did he agree he turned me on to so much that influenced NiN including Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Terry Riley & Harry Partch. All I really needed was that first trip to the record store after. I bought Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians and Terry Riley - Rainbow in Curved Air and I was all done after that.
I remember this song coming out. Growing up in a small town in the south middle of Nebraska, it was all they could talk about. Banned on most radio stations, even the version with the course language removed, the song wouldn't play. But there was one radio station... the one to push the boundaries which would play it late at night and to listen to them play it live was like a revolution in its own right. It was empowering to some strange degree. A song that is mean to push buttons, but is oh so fabulous. :) This song will always be a niche song, but it will always be a relevant song as well.
Echoing everyone else here: "Head Like A Hole". It's their signature song. BTW, Johnny Cash covered one of Nine Inch Nail's songs, called "Hurt". Even at an advanced age, Cash absolutely Nailed it.
I was in High School when this song was released. Just beginning my intense love for horror movies. This SOUND was like nothing I had ever heard before and I LOVED it.
Their sort of signature song was "Head Like a Hole" from 1990. You mentioned Depeche Mode, and Nine Inch Nails has a kind of heavy version of that eighties sound, a sound that was called "industrial" back in the eighties (this song is actually from 1994 and was a big hit). Other well known bands with kind of a similar dark, eighties-ish sound were Ministry and Skinny Puppy. This also makes me remember that, whereas back in the seventies and earlier eighties, high school football jocks had preferred hard rock and heavy metal, by the early nineties, bands like this were what a lot of macho types were listening to.
The last song on this album is "Hurt" - the song Johnny Cash covered and Jay reacted to a while back that is so amazing. This was a big album and help defined the 1990's. Trent moved into the house of the Manson Murders of the 1960's where he wrote and produced this album. The darkness of this album stems from this. You should watch the video for this: it's amazing and got a ton of airplay on MTV back in the day. Genre-wise, this is usually referred to as Industrial.
I was a huge NIN fan in the 90s and I’m still surprised my foster mom let 16 y/o me and my foster sisters go to their concert. We were down in the front of GA and it was wild to say the least. I like their song from the 2000s called The Hand That Feeds. But I agree with everyone saying you should also check out Head Like A Hole.
Nine Inch Nails is really a one-man act created by Trent Reznor, with collaboration from his creative partner Atticus Ross. Trent's genius comes from not having boundaries, and he built his reputation on that for over 35 years.
At its heart, Closer is a Disco song! Funky bassline, steady four-on-the-floor beat! Everything else is just details. Next, you should check out *I'm Afraid Of Americans* with David Bowie!
Oh this is GREAT! Jordan is looking confused while there's a huge grin on Amber. Talk about mixed reactions. Of course I have to admit that I was pretty shocked the first listen too, although I got past it quick😅. Soon as I saw this title pop up in my notifications, I immediately stopped what I was doing because I HAD to see your reaction because I knew the subject matter
Ha Ha!!! Jays face!!.. with the lyrics and Amber just rocking away smiling was hilarious!!! I relate to Amber... I was that little sis to my bro sometimes. .. my poor bro at the time! Great reaction as a Gen X grunger I was into NIN!
I was surprised to see this one pop up. I was waiting for the reaction lol… NIN was super popular in the college bars in the 90’s. At least the college bars I was at in Ohio. Tipper Gore’s parental advisory sticker is in the corner. Anytime that sticker appeared, we had to listen to it!
Head Like A Hole should be your next Nine Inch Nails song, This song was banned in Canada I heard because of the stop, go motion in the video was causing people to have seizures. The downward spiral album is a gem.
I remember when this song dropped and it hit hard. I was already a fan but this song made superstars of NIN. I saw them with Bowie back in 96 at the Forum, best concert I ever attended.
NIN is by far my favorite band, there's so much to explore with them. I'd recommend going through each era, The Fragile is my personal favorite. Each album has something new to offer.
I don't care how long it takes, but you both need to eventually react to every song NIN's album "Pretty Hate Machine". Not a bad song on that entire record. I share that album with my 79-year-old mother and my 73-year-old stepfather, and they both agreed it's an epic record.
Trent Reznor lived in New Orleans in the Garden District down the street from Anne Rice, author of “Interview with a Vampire”, and stories were told that nothing but Classical piano was heard playing coming from his home. Betcha Trent was a child prodigy who could play any Bach, Beethoven or Mozart concerto.

Lol, poor Jay's face looks stunned at the chorus, and Amber just vibes through it.😆
I know right? 😂 I actually thought the reactions would be the exact opposite; Amber looking shocked and Jay rocking out!
This song is 30 years old this year. Wow! 1994 was a great year for music and movies. Awesome reaction guys!!
Same. Wondering if I could catch it before it got censored. lol. Check
Same here!
I knew that was coming and just waiting for the look on Jay's face. Priceless lol😂😮😅
@@SuzakuX That would be really cool. An EGOT is such a huge accomplishment.
This song was also used in the opening credits of the movie Se7en.
One of my favs. Back in the day, we had a saying, everybody needs their NIN.
I had (have!) this album on vinyl and spun it repeatedly that year
Their sort of signature song was "Head Like a Hole" from 1990.
Ive heard this song so much i cant even imagine the joy and shock you felt
This was a club banger in the 90's. Check out Burn from NIN
Front Line Assembly are way better.
When I think or hear of that song, Natural Born Killers comes to mind!!
@@FLmickey90 great movie and an awesome soundtrack. Same goes for The Crow movie and soundtrack
@@powerslave9365 Both are great! Yes, I'm WAY behind on the times for both movie and soundtrack for The Crow!
Some easy listening for your Sunday evening.
Ha ha....good one!
90s club banger… you could not escape this track!
I'm so surprised you actually did this one. 😂 With the lights off and the bass pounding, this is an absolute vibe. Love it!!
They played that together in their 1995 tour. Amazing!
@CrossBorderCamping Did you know there's a remix with Ice Cube?!
@@TahoeNevada I did not, I will have to find that!
This song is 30 years old. That is crazy. I was listening to this way before I should have back then.
So they banned the song?? Why not just ban the video?
@@waynecanning4122 it was the video.
NIN is Trent Reznor and you should definitely look up his work on movies. Movies like Soul. He is absolutely amazing!!
Never clicked so fast! 😂
Head Like a Hole is very heavy by NIN.
Nice pick.
I don't care how long it takes, but you both need to eventually react to every song NIN's album "Pretty Hate Machine". Not a bad song on that entire record. I share that album with my 79-year-old mother and my 73-year-old stepfather, and they both agreed it's an epic record.
Nine Inch Nails rocks!! Was also one of my favorites. Still rockin to it today.
NIN are amazing live. I saw them with David Bowie in 1995! Amazing!
I saw that show too! (In NJ)
Me too, in Pittsburgh.
