Saying that Michael Schur "co-created parks and rec" is the definition of a understatement, he co-created parks and rec but also The Office, The good place and Brooklyn 99. Everything that guy touches turns to gold
There's also a ton of character and depth that doesn't actually get directly acknowledged in-show, but it's pretty clear that the writers intended it. Holt was always a bit of a stickler for the rules, but he became so obsessed with it because he had to. His superiors in the 80s would have taken any excuse to fire him and Holt worked hard to avoid that. The show is very much about him learning to trust and interact with his colleagues as a human. Moreover Jake's journey is the opposite: to learn to balance his "childish" aura with a maturity. I find that every character has this sort of duo Jake-Holt growth, like Amy does with Gina and Rosa, it's what I think makes this show feel so natural : )
He addresses this pretty directly in S1 E2 if I remember correctly, when his job is threatened, he says that he has had many people try and destroy him due to him being black and gay, but the only reason he is there is because he does his job perfectly.
it makes me so happy that other people think this deeply about a sitcom. truly this show is one of the best on TV right now. the emotional depth is what makes it work, it's what makes so many great sitcoms work, and when it's lacking it's what makes them fail. I finished watching Bojack Horseman a couple months ago and remember being so down and depressed by its finale. It has become my favourite animated series, I can’t explain how a “comedy” show is so deep and existential. I thought it would be a perfect topic for one of your videos, because of how good your analysis are. I really hope you could dedicate a video to it, really love your channel ❤️
I'm going to say something, and maybe this will help you. Bojack was a piece of shit to EVERYONE around him, including those he professed to care about. And in the end, they all severed ties. You never know when one shitty thing you do without thinking might be someone else's last straw with you. ***BE KIND*** It won't always cause people to treat you better, but take it from me. You are only in control of yourself. And it's so much easier to sleep at night.
You forgot about just talking about when Holt was set off by dentists co-opting being a doctor. That was probably the funniest thing in the whole episode and felt real unlike the other funny stuff.
I am surprised the video doesn’t mention “Homicide: Life on the Streets”. An excellent police drama from the 90s featuring Braugher. Set in Baltimore and based on a book by David Simon (creator of The Wire), Braugher was excellent in that series. And there is an early episode which is pretty much the same concept as this one - all set in the interrogation room. Featuring Braugher and his partner. It is incredible television. For many of us who were huge fans of Homicide, it’s been a delight to see Braugher in this role in Brooklyn 99. And, nicely, he’s a rather different character than his Homicide counterpart. Oh man. But I highly recommend tracking down that show. The conversations between Braugher and partner played by Kyle Secor are brilliant. But! Anyways, there were a few of us old Homicide fans that were excited to see this episode of 99. It feels like a possible tribute to a legendary episode of an underrated series also featuring Braugher. Aside from the general conceit the episodes play out differently, rather than having a Braugher re-create the older episode. If the episode can be found (I am not sure if the Homicide series is easily accessible these days), it would be interesting to do a feature on it and compare.
Sadly, Homicide is tough to find online. But this episode was a direct homage to"Three Men and Adena", the fifth episode of the first season which is a pure bottle episode set in "The Box" that has arguably never been topped by any police procedural.
can we appreciate the structure and thought that went into this video. the summary of the plot was amazing and the comparison of comedy with the kite was soo clever and well thought out. As well as the whole analization of what made the episode perfect. You're amazing at this!! you deserve to be complimented🥰
What I loved about this show is that diversity wasn't pushed down our throats. The characters are more than just gays, blacks, hispanics etc. Their whole character arc wasn't just centered around just one aspect of them.
I didn’t even notice the diversity until someone mentioned it. I had went through the first 5 seasons before I noticed that so few of the characters aren’t minorities.
I wouldn't say this episode is the best - I prefer the earlier ones better - but just like the episode's structure explained in the video, its place in the series is a moment to take a breath from the "usual" plot lines/episodes. If that kind of episodes were more frequent, they would be part of the series' idea/approach/tenet, and wouldn't stand out. Also I felt like the quality the show had slightly started to go down from that season - yet much slower than most sitcoms at this stage - so having this episode kind of reaffirming the strengths of the show at that point felt really fresh.
The writers of this show deserve their pay increased, and more. They deserve recognition. I do not however agree to the same for recent series release like under the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Witcher banners.
I was kinda hoping it wasn't going to be The Box since it's already known as being such a great episode. I could have been exposed to something I hadn't considered before.
Me too. When he was talking about blending comedy with drama and taking things seriously, my first thought was the episode "Show Me Going" because it managed to be funny and insightful and intense with great character moments for everyone. As much as I love the episode "The Box" and agree it's an excellent episode worthy of praise, it's a tad overrated because I think there are other episodes just as good that don't get talked about enough.
Dude, I just watched that episode for the first time right now, I've been rewatching the entire series and catching up on all the stuff I missed, and it was amazing. I absolutely loved that it's entirely Holt and Peralta based taking place entirely in the Interrogation Room. The chemistry between the two officers being slowly broken down by Philip, and that fucking crescendo of monologuing at the very end before Philip snaps was incredible. Sterling killed it there, you can tell exactly what he's thinking, "Oh goddammit, I just confessed!" I love episodes like this, and it's the same reason why I love the episodes Coral Palms Part 1 and The Big House Part 1. They're mostly focused on one storyline and take little time focusing on different things. It's refreshing to have a simple direct Plot A story without any other B's or C's. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is a gem with so much passion put behind it.
I see this episode as the "dinner party" of brooklyn 99, since the two eps are praised to death by fans. It's a terrific episode for sure, but imo it lacks a bit without the rest of the ensemble.
I agree! I like both episodes but I always feels a little thrown off kilter because its lacking without the rest of the cast and therefore these are actually some of my least favorite episodes (but still good episodes)
Even the way the dentist walks into the precinct tells you buckets about his character- he swaggers in, tapping his finger on Gina’s desk. Showing his confidence and superior attitude rather than telling us about it.
And this show have one of the best character writing I've ever seen, idk if it's because a sitcom so they can just focus on the character, but character development and depth in this show is surprisingly AMAZING, and it doesn't have to do this good lol.
This is my absolute favorite episode of the entire series. When it first aired and B99's future at the time was unknown, I felt that if this had been moved to the end of the season to be their final episode after all of the story arcs had concluded, I would have been happy. It is just such an fantastic episode in terms of the the comedy, the Holt and Jake's relationship, and the drama B99 holds. I remember falling out of my seat laughing when the chair hit Jake. While I am happy with how the series did eventually end, this would have been a good episode to go out on
Your point about resting and taking time from the comedy reminds me of what makes jazz music so great. Knowing how to use pauses is as important as knowing how to add notes, and creating tension (going off the harmony) is fundamental before resolving it (going back to the harmony). It's easy to create a cookie cutter pop song, where everything is nice and according to the formula, but very hard to properly create and resolve tension.
The Box has always been my favourite episode of B99 - I love when shows do an episode where everything happens within one room (or mostly) without cutaways or flashbacks etc. We get pure character development for 20 something minutes and it's amazing to watch
This is my favorite sitcom of all time. I definitely agree, this episode perfectly balances comedy and drama. It's also smack dab in the middle of the show's best run of episodes ever.
I remembering finishing that episode and just thinking “That was one of if not the best episode of Brooklyn Nine Nine”, so glad you made a video about it
I wont deny that this episode is fantastic, and I'd argue one of the best in the series, but my problem is that I feel the show rarely reaches these dramatic highs. Sure its funny routinely, but drama like this, especially drama involving police work and ingenious solves comes far too infrequently in my opinion.
Getting episodes introduced was always well done. Particularly the first episode where we get introduced to the show. Terry telling Holt about his detective squad was the perfect way to quickly give you the background.

it's my favorite brooklyn 99 episode, it's amazing how they got the serious tone perfect for this episode, the low lights, everything happening in the same place, the tension... it's perfect
I never thought that almost 22 minutes of dialogue from 6 characters could be so exciting.
this episode also has one of my favourite jokes in b99 which is when holt loses his shit over the usage of the word doctor and then it hard cuts to him drinking some water and saying apparently that's a trigger for me
This makes me want to watch the cold open where Jake has all of the suspects at the line up sing "I want it that way"
absolutely captivating writing and acting in this episode, shows you don't need to be flashy to produce some damn good entertainment
***BE KIND***
It won't always cause people to treat you better, but take it from me.

"huge fans of Homicide" is an interesting phrase

@@MatthewBaron Best cop drama ever.
can we appreciate the structure and thought that went into this video. the summary of the plot was amazing and the comparison of comedy with the kite was soo clever and well thought out. As well as the whole analization of what made the episode perfect. You're amazing at this!! you deserve to be complimented🥰
Awesome.
What I loved about this show is that diversity wasn't pushed down our throats. The characters are more than just gays, blacks, hispanics etc. Their whole character arc wasn't just centered around just one aspect of them.
I didn’t even notice the diversity until someone mentioned it. I had went through the first 5 seasons before I noticed that so few of the characters aren’t minorities.
one of the best episodes of any show, glad to see a great video about it
Appreciate it.

I can hear peralta's "oh my god" and Holt's "peralta!" even without the audio
This is absolutely the best episode from this show. And there is a lot of excellent episodes. But this one was different.

Thé most badass confrontation in a sitcom. Both actors nailed it and the setup was amazing. Definitely a favourite episode!

The box is my absolute favourite episode it was so good I watched it over and over again 😭
When holy loses it about the “doctorate” was one of my favorite parts of that episode
RIP Andre Braugher, you were and will for ever be a legend.
This show got my out of some of the darkest times in my life. Love the deep, innocent, inoffensive humor
Andy's face right after the confession is one of my favourite moments in B99.
Sterling K. Brown also has the best delivery of "Shrek" in any media.
The Box is hands down one of the best episodes of anything to ever air on TV. It's genuinely that good.
I watched this show all the time with my Father. I miss him.

You still have the memories and hopefully watching the show makes you feel the nostalgia of having him. Sorry for your loss

Holt killed it in this episode with Jake, this episode makes me love their relationship even more! Andre Braugher RIP❤
This episode is, by far, the best one of the whole series and one of the greatest of any cop show there is. Hands down.

This episode was absolutely amazing. I hated the dentist so much and was satisfied when he confessed. Each character stood out so much
This is my favorite episode of the season! So good!! I’m glad you made this video 😄
This is one of my favorite episodes of the show. It can easily be looked over and doesn’t do anything with any major plot lines but it’s so, so good
I wouldn't say this episode is the best - I prefer the earlier ones better - but just like the episode's structure explained in the video, its place in the series is a moment to take a breath from the "usual" plot lines/episodes.

This is my FAVORITE episode! I've watched B99 a LOT and this is really the best episode!
Hands down one of the greatest shows you can watch

I always claimed this as my most favourite and engaging episode and you just proved why ❤❤
Rip Andre you were an amazing actor
The writers of this show deserve their pay increased, and more. They deserve recognition.
I do not however agree to the same for recent series release like under the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Witcher banners.
I was kinda hoping it wasn't going to be The Box since it's already known as being such a great episode. I could have been exposed to something I hadn't considered before.
Same
If it’s not “The Box”, I would consider either “Moo Moo” or “The Safehouse”.
Might be my favorite Nerdstalgic video! Tsym for posting a b99 video! :D
It had a small budget, but still became one of the best episodes in the show.
It’s just amazing to me how much story and entertainment talented people can pack into 20 minutes
Just came across this channel, and this is genius work. Extremely well thought, detailed but does not bore you. So captivating. Brilliant.
Sterling killed it there, you can tell exactly what he's thinking, "Oh goddammit, I just confessed!"
I love episodes like this, and it's the same reason why I love the episodes Coral Palms Part 1 and The Big House Part 1.
Which show is "dinner party" from?
@@user-yn2sr8cf8g the office
I agree! I like both episodes but I always feels a little thrown off kilter because its lacking without the rest of the cast and therefore these are actually some of my least favorite episodes (but still good episodes)
Agree. Also both Dinner Party and The Box have only 1 plotline. Usually sitcoms have 2 or more plotlines, but these 2 have 1
Even the way the dentist walks into the precinct tells you buckets about his character- he swaggers in, tapping his finger on Gina’s desk. Showing his confidence and superior attitude rather than telling us about it.
"The Box" was a very good "bottle episode". You get to see how well all three main actors can act.
This is exactly why the BOX is my favourite episode of B99, I keep coming back to it.
This episode is one of the greatest TV episode I have ever witnessed. It's an art
I knew this would be the episode you will analyse. Favourite episode of the series
This is my fav episode so I feel validated watching this lmao
Me too! Lol
A phenomenal episode. Always an instant rewatch.

The Box has always been my favourite episode of B99 - I love when shows do an episode where everything happens within one room (or mostly) without cutaways or flashbacks etc. We get pure character development for 20 something minutes and it's amazing to watch
While everything in this video is 100% accurate.
The throwing the chair and bouncing back still makes me laugh cry. Every single time.

Finally a good breakdown of my fav B99 episode
This has always been my favorite episode, so happy to see it get the credit it deserves!!
Part of what made this one great is it was an homage to Braugher’s
role as a brilliant interrogator in “Homicide:Life on the Streets”.
This is my favorite sitcom of all time. I definitely agree, this episode perfectly balances comedy and drama. It's also smack dab in the middle of the show's best run of episodes ever.
Honestly, It's so good timing that you don't notice, you just enjoy from your heart
This is my favorite episode of B99!! This is the one I'll rewatch constantly just on its own. I've made my family watch it multiple times too.
Sure its funny routinely, but drama like this, especially drama involving police work and ingenious solves comes far too infrequently in my opinion.
no because if it had to be one episode it was totally totally be this one. it is such a great episode.
Actually, it’s my favorite episode, thanks for the video
Getting episodes introduced was always well done. Particularly the first episode where we get introduced to the show. Terry telling Holt about his detective squad was the perfect way to quickly give you the background.
Oh my god this is definitely my favorite episode
