I bought a Portrait 3 in October. Its my first craft machine and after learning as much as I could about all the different ones out there I decided on the 3. I just didn't think I would be creating projects larger than 8 inches. The only downside is that most vinyl and paper come in 12x12 size. So I bought a good quality paper cutter! So far, I am loving the Portrait and all I can make with it.

I was on the fence for a long time between the Portrait 3 and Cameo 4... My best buddy convinced me to go with the Cameo 4 because of the cutting size. She told me it was a giant pain to cut things down, and that I would save on time and materials with the larger cutting width. I really love my machine and can't wait to make lots of presents. I love that I can cut my stickers with it, but I also love the "possibilities" that it offers, :)

Great video. I just purchased the Portrait 3 for my mom as a Christmas present. She loves to do paper crafts but was intimated my the Cameo's many features and the price. She just didn't want to spend the money if she was not going to use it. So I think the Portrait 3 will be perfect for her and if she doesn't like it then at least I didn't spend to much on it and she won't feel bad about not using it.

I have the first portrait. Since purchasing (and getting more comfortable with it) I've started using it more bigger projects that included vinyl. I recently came across the problem of buying a roll of vinyl and having to cut off some of it to make it "fit" the portrait. Since I'm more experienced, living in a larger space and know that I'll be working more with vinyl, it was worth it for me to purchase the cameo! I'm so excited to start project making again!

Really appreciated this video. After watching it I realized the portrait size is perfect for my needs. I have a portrait 2 and I'm very happy with it. It came down to budget, space and looking at what my usage is. I'm mainly a card maker and a t-shirt here and there as well as other smaller items. Will I upgrade to a Portrait 3? maybe but for right now I'm good and appreciate the videos for it.

Bought Portrait 3, since for now my crafting space is very limited. And probably when i will have more space it will already be cameo 5 or higher)) Portrait is great machine, used it for cutting leather for mosaic on the book cover and it worked surprisingly well. Of course it was very thin leather (paired) but design was rather intricate. I'm impressed. And foil quill also worked well.
    Thank you for your work!

I got the Portrait 3 earlier this month. I went with the smaller machine for 2 reasons.
    1. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment and space is an issue
    2. I already have a Cricut Maker and a Brother ScanNCut DX so the bigger cutting area wasn't a real need.
I decided to try the Silhouette because who doesn't need all 3 of the biggest names in home craft cutters?! I also was more interested in the software. So far I have just upgraded to the Designer edition.

waiting for my portrait to be delivered, just ordered one for my business from a german store without taxes for €150,
so i'm excited for it to arrive, if it does not i guess i used paypal so no problem.
But i'm pretty sure it will took me 6 hours of research into these machines as i'm used to 3D printers
And self assembly kits so the prices all look ridiculous to me as an Ender 3 cheaper and arguably a lot more complicated.

I don’t know but I’m really regretting that I didn’t do much more research for getting a plotting machine. I have the silhouette 4 and we just don’t get along at all no matter how much efforts I put in placing my design identical to what I have on my laptop the cutting is just always off and that’s so frustrating

Hey Leif, try this. Turn the machine off, then move the blade housing back and forth in the machine 3-4 times, then push it all the way back to the left as far as it will go. That usually works for me if it's not cutting in the right spot. Hope this helps! ---Becky

Your my go to girl now......love your humble personality and honesty with knowledge!!! But?.... (sorry LOL) I really need to know, difference between silhouette portrait and silhouette portrait 3....I have an Original Portrait..........I have a soap shop and make tags, and packaging........mainly. And wondering if the 3 would maybe be a good investment or just go with cameo 4 (terrified of LOL, more intimidation).

    • @DesignBundles
      @DesignBundles  3 года назад

Hey Pamela! Thank you so much, I appreciate your kind words! I'll be honest with you, if you have the original Portrait, there's really no need to upgrade for labels, tags or packaging. If you are ready to upgrade, then I would suggest the Cameo 4 because it will unlock so many more features with the new specialty tools. You don't have to be intimidated though, because the software is the hardest part (in my opinion) and you already have that in hand using your original Portrait, so you go this!
      Hope this helps! ---Becky

But then I heard that with the silhouette you need to replace the parts Alot?? Idkkkk blah. I originally wanted the joy just for label making for organizing but now I want to get something that has more options in case I want to use it to sell things for clothes or making home decor. Sigh. Idk what to do.

Hey Becky! This was a great video! I watched your unboxing videos of both machines and have been reading and checking things about cutting machines since before Christmas but still am not sure which one is best for me. I don't want to spend too much on it because it still is my first machine, but I can see me working with thin wood cuts and some little metal etching (because I already did it by hand in university and miss those kind of projects) next to cardstock and papers. I am not sure if I will work with vinyl because I haven't ever used it in my life before 🤦🏻‍♀️
That being said. Would you recommend me to buy Portrait 3 or Cameo 4? Or do I still better go for a different brand than Silhouette for my plans?

I feel your pain! If you are that much on the fence, I would say go ahead and go with the Cameo 4. It will do everything you need and more, and the price difference isn't too significant. Unless you are 100% sure that size will not affect what you do, the Cameo 4 is the way to go because the Portrait (while cute) cannot do as much and you may regret that once you get to crafting. Hey! Hoping to get an advice here. This video was already very helpful, so as a beginner I decided to go with the Portrait 3. The Cameo looks amazing, but I guess it might be too much for me :-)
But I saw I cannot use the Silhouette App because the beta is already full. I have a laptop, but I never use it and it has some technical problems. I might get Silhouette Studio to work on it, but I don‘t ever use my laptop. I do everything on my iPad so that app would be amazing.
Is it worth waiting and handling my laptop until the app is coming? Or should I change to cricut? The maker is too much for me and the explore air 2 might be too much as well, but both of them are cheap right now here. But I don‘t know if I want to change the machine, just for the app reasons, because someday that silhouette app might come.
Maybe someone here got an advice! Still going for portrait 3, waiting for the app? Or going for a Cricut one to have the app immediately?

Hey, great question! I'll be honest, I very rarely use the app for either Cricut or Silhouette, I'm just a laptop kind of girl. I have hopes for the Silhouette Go App, but given how limited it is now, I'm not sure how long it will be before it will have the functions you need to actually use the Portrait efficiently. If possible, I would use your laptop, but if it has technical difficulties, that may hinder you. You can download the software for free from their website and see how it runs? The Cricut app is more functional and a lot of Cricut crafters use the app exclusively, but it is still limited compared to the full software. But if you cannot run Silhouette Studio, the Explore Air 2 is a good option and I don't think you would regret going with that machine. It won't be until you decide to do your own designing that the software makes a big impact, if you purchase designs and cut them, then Cricut Design Space will work just fine. Hope this helps! ---Becky

can i cut a A4 paper in 4 (making it be 4 sheets of A6 paper) with the pixscan base on portrait 3? loved the video!

Hey! So the Portrait only cuts 8" wide. So in theory you could do this by cutting one set, then picking up and repositioning the paper to cut the other side, but it would be more work. I think I would use a paper trimmer to do this by hand. Hope this helps! ---Becky

Silhouette Cameo 4 bought it and returned very next day. I used to have Cricut and after buying Cameo 4 I have bought Cricut Maker. In Cameo 4 the rotary blade is a drugging blade, would not autorotate, is not cutting with precision, software creating the patch around the design to adjust the blade direction, and this is resulting in wasting your material, the cut that you will get is very poor nothing close to what you get with Cricut Maker. The quality of the Cameo 4 is also very poor.

Hey Eva, sorry you didn't enjoy the Cameo 4 but happy to hear the Cricut Maker is fitting your needs. Hope this helps! ---Becky

Wondering if it is the same
    Cut speed for both?

Hey Casper! I can't answer this question definitively, but I'll say that if there is a difference, it isn't significant. On both machines you can adjust the cutting speed, but usually you will stick to the recommended defaults to get the best cutting results. Hope this helps! ---Becky
