    My review of quite possibly the most anticipated album of the year, concept record "Trench" by alternative duo Twenty One Pilots. Taking influence from co-producer and co-writer Paul Meany of MuteMath fame, the guys take a more chilled out synthetic approach to much of their new album. Be sure to comment your thoughts and theories down below, and remember, BE NICE TO EACH OTHER.

    I think this is their best album, period. One of the best albums of the year. Incredibly rewarding and exciting, refreshingly stripped back and a fantastic combination of the best elements of Vessel and Blurryface. I loved this album and I'm glad you did too.

    I'm gonna ask nicely that you PLEASE be kind to others regarding theories, interpretations, and more from TRENCH. I had to cut this part of the video due to time, but I basically said "please don't crap in someone's cup of coffee just because they don't hear or interpret the album the same way you do. If they want to listen to it without diving into the world and story, so be it!" Hope you guys enjoy the review!

    The bass in this album is extremely prominent and some of the riff work is superb. I listened to it this morning and it will be listened to again and again.....it’s heavier and darker but at times it’s lighter. The reggae hip hop vibes are strong in this one
    And can we just discuss the breakdown in cheetah I mean dear god it’s awesome

    Personally I think this is their best album yet. You can tell how much they have matured as a band, and the touch of Mutemath from Paul Meany as a co producer really just adds to it. TOP and MM's styles complement eachother.

    I really liked this album. It ran smoothly, lyrical content amazing as usual, songs chilling and I quite like some of the slower sounds. However, I agree it needed more aggression. At times I felt it dragged slightly. Songs are all amazing but something more akin to jumpsuit/levitate would really work. 8/10

      Chester Bennington was highly glorified after his death imo. I'm not saying his suicide was. But the man himself, definitely. I'm also not saying there is anything wrong with that, it's just what happened. I mean you're probably going to find RIP Chester comments on the majority of even like Three Days Grace songs for example, let alone Linkin Park themselves. Not even to mention the concert in his honor. The outpouring of very reasonable love and nostalgia after a prolific suicide like this definitely plays into the situation Tyler is singing about. I wouldn't be surprised if the reaction to Chester played into his writing somehow.

    While I agree Neon Gravestones is a corner stone and is clearly the influencing song of the album musically it really isn’t the best and I would argue that’s On purpose. The instrumental is really stripped back and reminds me of the slam poetry version of heavy dirty soul where the focus of piece is what he’s saying.

  • @InanimateMashups
    @InanimateMashups 6 лет назад +109

    If I had to be honest I was expecting a little more from this album, while it was good I don't know if I can say it was as good as Blurryface, at least sonically - I'd say they're around even lyrically. The whole concept album component with the 'escape from the dystopian city' theme felt like it was being lost at points (with certain songs kinda pulling away from the narrative), and generally I didn't find the songs as memorable as they've made in the past - I'd call Trench a good album, it's definitely still strong and there are some really cool concepts and great moments (imo the end of Neon Gravestone, the entirety of Jumpsuit and My Blood, the synth break in Bandito were my favorites) I'd probably put it around a strong 7 imo, where I'd give Blurryface a high 8.
    Maybe I expected something else, like for example good kid mad city where the universe and the world inside the album is really vividly painted. Maybe the album needs to go along with the hype and music videos to fully appreciate it, if the hardcore fans can enjoy it then power to them. :) Fantastic review as usual dude!

      @keandric2765 6 лет назад +4

      If I can maybe bring up a different point of view on the "concept album" part of what you said (b/c I also thought it was gonna be much More of a concept album than it was, not that there's anything bad or good about that, it's just not what we expected in that way); something I've been thinking about the last couple days: Tyler didn't write Trench to be a concept album for Us, or just for it to be a concept album for the album's sake. He created the world for Himself, as a way to try to work through things he was going through, and he wrote from that world, so even though some of the songs talk about things going on like Dema and Nico and stuff, it was just a residual bonus. So it's kinda like it's a concept album for Them, creatively, emotionally, ect.. maybe?? :))

      I've hated all of their other albums tbh. Trench is the first album I've been able to put on, and sit through the whole thing without getting bored, or getting mad at bad mixes/cringy lyrics, etc. In fact: Trench is in my top 5 favorite albums of this year. If you would have told me a Twenty One Pilots album was going to be one of my favorite albums this year, I'd think you were crazy.
      I think the other stuff they've made is a very acquired taste. Some songs are definitely stand outs though. Especially on Vessel. To me it just seems like Trench can appeal to both the niche fans, and a wider more critical audience. The mixing/production is great, the concept is great, the lyrics aren't cringe inducing, and all in all it's a very well balanced album emotionally.

    This might be my favorite review I've seen of yours. I was also a bit bummed that Jumpsuit was the only heavy song but that doesn't take away from the overall quality of Trench. I'm with you in the sense that there was no songs I disliked but a few don't resonate as well. Those being Smithereens, Legend, and Leave the City. My favs are Jumpsuit, Neon Gravestones, Slow Cheetah and Chlorine 👍

    I fucking love it from the moment that the songs pull you in the next you know it's in your head and you can't escape it. The tone of the vocals and the lyrics really make a lot of sense from Jumpsuit to a ton of others on it as well. Best album and to me way worth checking out if you ask me.

    this album blew me away. they've never made something i think is bad so i had high expectations and after the singles i was even more hyped. and i'm so glad to say i wasn't disappointed. they delivered on so many levels that i didn't know i needed and i'm just so proud of them. the more you listen the better it gets every time

    While I don't think this album is perfect (at all), it's still pretty freaking good. I at least like every song, and even though Bandito and Cut My Lip don't stack up quite as high for me, I still think it's all around great. I have saved every song off the album (I've only ever done that otherwise for V&V, so it's a big deal for me), and even though I think Vessel is a bit better, unless the Imagine Dragons album really surprises me (and I don't really think it will), this will be my album of the year. I think with some time to sync in, I'll like it a bit more. Really light 9.5/10.

    I've had this album on repeat and all I kept thinking was damn, their collab with Mutemath had a massive influence on them and here I find out Paul Meany produced it! So awesome! I'm was worried about MM as Paul did an incredible solo video on their FB page in Jan of this year and that was it. It felt like his way of saying goodbye or something. I hope MM continues!

  • @banksbrashier1902
    @banksbrashier1902 6 лет назад +2

    Reasons why this album is their best…
    It’s not as unnecessarily edgy as blurryface or vessel. It still has interesting lyrics that deal with important topics but they aren’t pretentious
    It has better production than any of their other albums. I always liked the tøp x mutemath ep and the similar sounds on the album (the bass riffs and tones especially) are great.
    The biggest downfall of blurryface was that the album didn’t sound like an album, it sounded like a playlist. There was no flow or steady soundscape and the album didn’t have any associated sounds, styles, or vibe. Trench doesn’t have any of these problems with the growling bass grooves and synthesizers.
    8/10

  • @allieleon3107
    @allieleon3107 6 лет назад +1

    Twenty One Pilot's Trench is a beautiful fusion of art-rock, baroque pop, electronica, and even a little trap. It's easily the most instrumentally gorgeous album I've heard since Sam Mean's 10 Songs album.

  • @AngelineProductions
    @AngelineProductions 6 лет назад +2

    I was so happy when the first two singles released that they didn't choose to do a more generic pop sound to reach their more mainstream/casual listeners. I also wish that there were heavier guitars/bass lines throughout the album like there were in "Jumpsuit"...but I can't complain about the album as a whole honestly, because I love it.

  • @astro2678
    @astro2678 6 лет назад +4

    I totally agree. I was worried FBR was going to push them even more mainstream but when I heard the singles I new we were in good hands. Having Paul Meany as the co producer is just absolutely incredibly. This is without a doubt their best sounding record. If I’m being completely honest I think it may even be their best album period. Idk what it is but this album just captures me so much. Maybe it’s because this album gives me a hopeful feeling (which is what they were going for.) Over the years I’ve disliked Blurryface more and more. I don’t think it was bad but I didn’t like how mainstream it was. With Trench you can tell from a mile away that Tyler had full creative freedom. I absolutely can’t wait for the Bandito Tour. I’m really curious how they’ll translate their new songs into a live show. It would be kind of cool if Paul toured with them and played live synths (even though a lot of fans would disagree.)

    I’ve never really been that big of a twenty one pilots fan, I liked tear in my heart and ride but that was about it. Then Jumpsuit and Nico came out and I was so hyped for this album. It didn’t disappoint either. This is probably one of my favourite albums ever and it’s only been out for 2 days as of typing this.
    My favourites: jumpsuit, Nico, morph, chlorine, the hype, legend,
    Least favourites (even though I think all the songs are good): cut my lip, neon gravestones

    The entire album flows so well, it’s amazing! The singles that were released earlier need to grow on me again because I listened to them so much that now it’s a bit difficult to listen to those while I play Trench. The sound is so much different from the previous releases and it’s so great. I can’t even pick a favourite song off it. A 5/5 from me.

    The music itself sounds like something i’d hear straight from an aussie band and tyler’s vocals compliment that sound perfectly!

    This album is definitely atmospheric and I feel that the album flows pretty nicely. This album definitely feels like something that I would listen to while driving at night. Now yes, this album lacks aggressiveness but I feel like it helps transition from song to song. This album I feel will definitely grow on me over time but until that time comes: 8/10.
    UPDATE: After each listen from front to back, this album has definitely grown on me! With each new listen it seems as if I notice something new, every song seems to just get better with each listen! Each song is produced and layered so well. Nothing really feels out of place on this album. I think Trench might possibly be TOP’s BEST album TO DATE, I feel it surpasses blurryface (a record I did enjoy but didn’t see myself coming back to that often) with it’s experimentation, it doesn’t feel like TOP is throwing different genres at the wall to see what sticks (which in my opinion made blurryface a bit of a cluster when listening to the album front to back), Trench brings influences back of course such as Reggae but they also bring a little funk, surprisingly some MGMT-sounding influences, and a hint of dubstep, but in Trench they all were mixed in such a way that it works and nothing feels out of place. I’m changing my grade from an 8/10 to a 9.5/10 however with each new listen, you can expect me to change it to a 10/10 real soon.

    I feel like I should be loving this album, but I just don’t. There’s no denying these are good songs but I personally just don’t find them interesting and trench just isn’t an album I see myself coming back to. I want to get into it and the whole story but every time I listen to it I like it less and less. I thought it was a pacing issue but I honestly think it’s just not my vibe. Idk, I feel kinda guilty for being disappointed it’s weird
