Absolutely - if I’m being honest, I find that there’s a few tøp songs out there which I listen to specifically for the drumming. Josh is probably my favourite drummer right now
This might be some of the best Josh Dunn drumming on any TOP album. He tastefully brings the groove, fills and energy to every song - even if it’s a mid one. It’s certainly a great album for drums.
I used to think on some songs like On Scaled and Icy or even here the patterns were too simple but I actually appreciate how tight and fitting all of his drumming is even when it's not trying to be too flashy and take over the song, instead servicing it and bringing it up, and knowing when to bring in the bigger solos and fills
Clancy is an album full of growers. I wasn't vibing with half the songs on it at first. Subsequent listens turned me around on most of them (Still not super crazy about Lavish)
To be honest, about 80% of this album grows on you the more you listen to it. With Backslide specifically I feel like the structure seems a bit weird at first and the chorus does not feel like a chorus at first, but on second listen you really start appreciating how huge it is.
Probably because he's smart enough to realize that not everyone watching this specific video has ever watched any other content on his channel before and may appreciate the preface
I think the reason that Snap Back feels so similar to Backslide in its themes is because it's the fears from Backslide come to life. Backslide is about not wanting to backslide and trying to avoid it, while Snap Back is the backslide actually happening and "all the progress being lost." That then leads directly into Oldies Station which I think is kind of the thesis of album. Sometimes backsliding can be inevitable because people aren't perfect, you "start a streak you're bound to break." So the answer that Tyler comes up with is to just keep on trying and not give up when that happens. "When darkness rolls on you, push on through."
Knowing your opinion on Routines In the Night changed so drastically since you first heard it made me really happy to be honest. Really love that song, and, truthfully, the whole album.

I appreciated the effort in your Twenty One Pilots reviews Anthony even though you’re not a big fan of them. I wish Trench wasn’t tied to this album as it doesn’t feel much like a sequel in lore, production, vibes, anything really. It’s like this weird middle period and is better off as its own thing. I have small issues with pockets of the album, but overall has some of my favorite songs like Navigation, Vignette, and At the Risk of Feeling Dumb. The pacing of the album just feels off for a twenty one pilots album, but i like the direction they are taking overall.
Every single album TOP has released is tied to the storyline (including Heathens despite it not being part of an album) and every album has a different vibe and style to it, which I feel like is something that non-TOP fans don't really understand. They expect a definitive, similar sounding sequel to Trench that they will probably never get I do really like how almost every single song on this album follows a mix of their previous albums though, at the risk of feeling dumb feels like RaB combined with Blurryface for example
i feel the opposite pretty much, i think the vibes and the production and the themes and the songwriting all fit perfectly for the step after trench. the only thing that doesn't make sense to me is the lore. trench felt like when you first make a connection in a murder mystery story, and you expect to then start piecing together what happened, but clancy just seems like.. another first clue? not connected to anything solid. but when you take scaled and icy into account as being an in-universe album i think it all fits a little better, plus the circumstances of the band itself. also the pacing works for me, again like a culmination of all their previous stuff. but hey, all of my impressions are filtered through the fact i was obsessed with this band when i was 13 lol.
I don't think that the "welcome back to trench" line on Overcompensate means necessarily "welcome back to the trench era of songwriting". It can be taken as a line from the story since the character is actually returning to trench and dema as tyler explains in the "i am clancy" video.
A win is a win. Super fair and thoughtful review that perfectly articulated some of my praises and biggest gripes of this album, coming from a twenty one pilots megafan. Much love fantano
Watching people be so thankful that he gave it a 6/10 while there are people that are still salty over him giving certain albums 7/10 is hilarious. Big respect to you guys
I much prefer Fantano’s review videos over his gang of reviewers w/chat livestreams…. 🙄 At least this felt well thought out and gave credit where it was due. I definitely disagree with some of his opinions anyway, but at least it was not just a dismissive and offensive review to the fans of the band. Sad about his cringey comments on Vignette, though - Tyler’s singing and falsetto on that track is actually one of the highlights of the album for me. 😳
Twenty One Pilots is one of those bands I haven't paid much attention to, but always kinda felt like maybe I should? Like, especially in terms of massively popular, mainstream rock, everything I've heard from the band before Clancy (which isn't much) has been very respectable. So I gave Clancy a listen. And another listen. And another. My overriding takeaway is that Clancy reminds me of music I liked growing up. And there's something nice and comfortable about that. I guess file them along with POD as bands who released music in 2024 that I wasn't expecting to connect with, but I keep coming back to and could conceivably see making my year-end list.
Man, this album was such a fun time. Next Semester is definitely the takeaway from this, but there were so many good ones. The Craving is such a beautiful song dedicated to Tyler’s Wife Jenna, Navigating is a fun synth pop rock, and Paladin Strait is such a beautiful finale piece to the album. I’m glad that a lot of people really enjoyed this one
Personally I rated this alblum a 7/10 I believe it has some really high points and some really low points. I’m surprised you didn’t like vignette as that was imo one of the best tracks on the album with its strong hitting instrumentals and it’s great vocal performance. Also don’t take anything some of these TOP fans say in a negative way towards the artist. Some of these fans are way too ambitious
you completely misinterpreted backslide and snapback. Backslide is him not wanting to backslide and snapback is him backsliding and trying to get back to the mindset in backslide.
It’s also really funny and doesn’t take itself seriously, and I don’t know if everybody realizes that’s intentional. The music video helps communicate the vibe they were going for with the song. I love it and think it’s hilarious, especially the proctologist line
Expected. Fantano has always been not too deep into the lore and the callbacks like in 1:45 (even trench has a lot of more direct ones, which he mostly passed by), but this album is such a fascinating show of celebration for the group's discography and journey. I personally feel that deserves more merit with how it influenced the structure of top's music. Fair review for what the music can offer regardless. Very articulate in his opinions, which I respect. Especially because of that horrible first impressions listen on his stream. Thank you for giving this an opportunity and time to make for a concise video.
I appreciate Fantano vibing with how much of a straightforward album this is, you can tell it is one of it’s strengths when every song feels so personal to tyler and josh instead of trying to fit into a complex narrative
Why would this make any difference? Shouldn't Trench (place) sound like Trench (album) anyway? And why would they start the album off with a track like Overcompensate (which could have been on Trench) and the words "welcome back to Trench" if they didn't want you to think of Clancy partially as a companion piece to Trench? Silly thing to bring up, I think
@@comp.lex4 not necessarily tho because Trench (album) was pretty much set in Dema. And Clancy is set in Voldsoy. so a completely different sound actually makes a lot of sense even if you look at it from that lense. Dema is dark and bleak and Voldsoy is an icy island. Blurryface is technically set in Trench as well
@@comp.lex4 the album is until the point of navigating the return to trench, but overall the theme of the album is reclaiming the color red as in the blurryface era in opposition to the banditos (the yellow in trench) and musically it makes sense as fantano pointed out that some of their songs are similar to the previous albums instead of trench

I get the impression he wanted to hate it but couldn't help admitting it has good tracks even by his tastes. And I appreciate him acknowledging the lyrical themes instead of a gut surface reaction. Kudos for giving it a fair shake, man.
he didn't seem to have much of a problem with this album and I'm so glad about it and I'm happy that he stated the unnecessary hate tøp are getting from people who didn't even tried to listen to their musics and based their opinions on just listening to some reviewer (i think we know who we are talking about) , try the music out for yourself first rather than basing your opinions on what other thinks
This is the second time i've been excited to see "Twenty One Pilots - Clancy Album" in my notifications, Will definitely be cranking one out to this one Melon Man 👍👍
I have a question. If an album has a bunch of love songs you wouldn’t bat an eye, yet if they put two songs about metal health struggle you complain??? I LOVE Snap Back. Also, as a Midwesterner, Midwest Indigo is great. If you watched their interviews only three of the songs are part of the lore, (overcompensate, Navigating, and Paladin Strait) the rest are not so having a little variety is nice. I do agree Lavish is odd, but my teens like it. 🤷♀️
Lore below For people (like melon) that dont really get this, scroll on if you dont care ❤ every Twenty One Pilots album since Blurryface is part of the Trench/Clancy storyline. "Blurryface" is another name for Nico, who is the antagonist of the story. At the end of Trench, Clancy runs away from the city. Scaled and Icy is still part of the storyline, and "welcome back to trench" on Overcompensate is in reference to Clancy returning to "finish the fight" or what have you, not particularly about the sound of the old record. Alls to say; they didnt "take a break" from the concept albums, theyve always been making them. Glad to see this album get a six, much higher than i was expecting after he listened to some of this on the livestream
My favorite part of the album is when they say “Welcome back to French” and the entire rest of the album is sung in French

i feel the opposite pretty much, i think the vibes and the production and the themes and the songwriting all fit perfectly for the step after trench. the only thing that doesn't make sense to me is the lore. trench felt like when you first make a connection in a murder mystery story, and you expect to then start piecing together what happened, but clancy just seems like.. another first clue? not connected to anything solid. but when you take scaled and icy into account as being an in-universe album i think it all fits a little better, plus the circumstances of the band itself. also the pacing works for me, again like a culmination of all their previous stuff. but hey, all of my impressions are filtered through the fact i was obsessed with this band when i was 13 lol.
I don't think that the "welcome back to trench" line on Overcompensate means necessarily "welcome back to the trench era of songwriting". It can be taken as a line from the story since the character is actually returning to trench and dema as tyler explains in the "i am clancy" video.
It probably meant both imo. They know how everybody loves Trench, they put it there to raise the hype (which we don't believe in🗣‼️)
@@maciejojewski1755Band was litterally Overcompensating
A win is a win. Super fair and thoughtful review that perfectly articulated some of my praises and biggest gripes of this album, coming from a twenty one pilots megafan. Much love fantano
Watching people be so thankful that he gave it a 6/10 while there are people that are still salty over him giving certain albums 7/10 is hilarious.
Big respect to you guys
When you expect a 9 and get a 7, you're angry. When you expect a 3 and get a 6, you're happy
Fantano would have given this a strong 8 if it was called "Hood Hottest Clancy"
technically dema is a hood area soooo
0:05 phantom glasses adjustment
not was i was expecting based off of his reaction to the album, but ill take it
i think it grew on him, he strongly disliked RITN at first
@@muosda1 yeah
I much prefer Fantano’s review videos over his gang of reviewers w/chat livestreams…. 🙄
At least this felt well thought out and gave credit where it was due. I definitely disagree with some of his opinions anyway, but at least it was not just a dismissive and offensive review to the fans of the band.
Sad about his cringey comments on Vignette, though - Tyler’s singing and falsetto on that track is actually one of the highlights of the album for me. 😳
Same I was confused when he said that like bro i love the falsetto and I wish he used it more
I will take a 6. Coming from Fantano, at least
4, 8, 2 and 6
next ones gotta be a 10
;)
or a 0
or NOT GOOD or Unreviewable
the next number in that sequence is 0 lmao
We literally got two tens already 2 + 8 and 4 +6
Melon, if it was called trench you would’ve given it an 8
In case you are wondering lavish was designed to be a not so serious detour to the album
As a fan, 9/10. Objectively 7/10.
Real
Blurryface - 4/10
Trench - 8/10
Scaled and Icy - 2/10
Clancy - 6/10
Guys next album is going to be 10/10
Or a 0
0, 4, -2, 2 next
idk what makes you think that as next in this trend is a 0😭
Let's hope that they won't do another "bad on purpose" album.
Wouldnt it be 0?
You can’t just give this a 21/10 and think you’ll get away with it…
yea
Should've said Trench - sition at the end
Personally I rated this alblum a 7/10 I believe it has some really high points and some really low points. I’m surprised you didn’t like vignette as that was imo one of the best tracks on the album with its strong hitting instrumentals and it’s great vocal performance.
Also don’t take anything some of these TOP fans say in a negative way towards the artist.
Some of these fans are way too ambitious
you completely misinterpreted backslide and snapback. Backslide is him not wanting to backslide and snapback is him backsliding and trying to get back to the mindset in backslide.
I just farted

Strong 6 is something im happy with. Still his second favorite TØP album lmao so i can agree
Lavish is actually my favorite song... or at least top 3 on the record hard to choose. Regardless feels rather unique and super catchy
Same
It’s also really funny and doesn’t take itself seriously, and I don’t know if everybody realizes that’s intentional. The music video helps communicate the vibe they were going for with the song.
I love it and think it’s hilarious, especially the proctologist line
@@samgraef3028 the music video had me in tears
Fantano would’ve given it a 10 if it was a lot better
Fantano has given twenty one pilots a 4, 8, 2, and 6. Logic dictates that the next album will either be a 0 or a 10
It it was called "To Pimp A Clancy" it would've been 10/10
Clancthony!? Is that you on the thumbnail!??
yknow as a tøp fan myself, i think ill take this one. def better than some of the other reviews people gave clancy.
We appreciate how well you've articulated your insights. Keep doing your best.
Its not going back to the Trench ERA. Its the characters of the story going back to the continent named Trench.
Blurryface is technically set in Trench as well
@@WhiteTrash2993 in that case the original comment makes even less sense since the characters aren't even going back to Trench lol
@@comp.lex4 the album is until the point of navigating the return to trench, but overall the theme of the album is reclaiming the color red as in the blurryface era in opposition to the banditos (the yellow in trench) and musically it makes sense as fantano pointed out that some of their songs are similar to the previous albums instead of trench
great review as always. i’m glad you enjoyed the album! i’ve been a massive fan for years of twenty one pilots and have been waiting to hear your thoughts. you’re always very concise and well spoken. surprised you gave it a strong 6/10 though, your entire breakdown made it seem like you were gearing up to give it a 7/10 at least lol
I'm shocked. He rated it lower than I did but the way he talked about the record is borderline more positive than I am about it
A 6 is perfect for this album. Didn’t hit as hard as Trench been a tøp fan for a loooong time, but I appreciate everything they put into it despite some songs just falling flat for the most part. Fire review Mr. melatonin
Truly the most review of all of his reviews. Balanced, fairly objective within the context of the aim of the album. Pretty pleased
if only it was titled to pimp a bishop
And thank you melon as always for letting me know what I think about yet another album
This is the second time i've been excited to see "Twenty One Pilots - Clancy Album" in my notifications, Will definitely be cranking one out to this one Melon Man 👍👍
5:50 melon was shitting on backslide in multiple occasions and now he said it's one of the best track lmao 😂
Nice review. Even if I dont think that we already got the “full length” LP, because of the ending. I think we get another Song or maybe even an album
Backslide in the best tracks is a win. Was shocked how much you and many of the other people hated it, but it was easily my favorite from the album
11:35
idk, i'm a tøp fan but I still don't really like that song even though it grew on me
11:35
Yo, what's up Brad.
Obamna
This album did not meet my expectations on first listen but man does it grow on you. This guy knows how to write borderline infectious earworms.
excuse me, grating vocals? on Vignette? literally the best song on the record?? that's crazy
Where is the BMTH review?!?
I have a question. If an album has a bunch of love songs you wouldn’t bat an eye, yet if they put two songs about metal health struggle you complain??? I LOVE Snap Back. Also, as a Midwesterner, Midwest Indigo is great. If you watched their interviews only three of the songs are part of the lore, (overcompensate, Navigating, and Paladin Strait) the rest are not so having a little variety is nice. I do agree Lavish is odd, but my teens like it. 🤷♀️
I had a premonition of you singing the navigating chorus like that after you sang Chlorines chorus in your trench review
Lore below For people (like melon) that dont really get this, scroll on if you dont care ❤
every Twenty One Pilots album since Blurryface is part of the Trench/Clancy storyline.

Trench is probably my fave TOP album, so I'm stoked to give the new one a listen. I didn't listen to the one in the middle more than once
As soon as I heard the proctologist line, I knew Fantano would never go past it lol
