Great tips and review. Some of us in Alaska are putting that into to the test, I'm sure you know them. -36° here now, just came in from a walk, -50.4° down in the low cold parts of town. That's a crazy dive in temps from 19° to -45! You obviously honed your system and your understanding of real cold on the ITI and it shows. This cold person listens to you!
I just completed a section of the Fat Viking in Geilo Norway. I used Alan information and JP too make sure I had a good sensible kit list. I completed 50km route but was aiming for 150km and qualifying distance for Iditarod. Ran out of energy was my only issue. I was cozy, warm, and dry the entire time. Winds were howling and ice, hard snow and very soft was everywhere waiting for me to swap tyre pressure. It’s a key enabler to do tyre ( tire ) skills and if it’s wrong too hard or too soft you don’t get far. Rebecca Roush, JP and Alan are Very genuine advisors so do take their information as read. My first ever fat Bike race , first time swapping tyre pressure so so so very often ever and a great time spent introduction to the cold dry fatbike events. Dirty Teeth MTB Priceless channel. I trusted all my kit. NY ADVICE. a personal satellite tracker is my go to device and I tell everyone to invest. You buy wonderful expensive kit why skimp on the safety. It may save your rescue teams life too not just you.
You're a hard man Alan! Those temps are mindblowing... and you put a massive effort in. Thanks for sharing some of the details. Can I also say, and forgive me if this sounds like a criticism... But I REALLY appreciate that this video forgoes the usual intro. I watch all your videos with headphones, and the burst of the shouting audio in the old intro was always super jarring. This is much more enjoyable! (I realize you haven't used the intro for a few videos now... but all the same, it's a noticeable detail I wanted to give you credit for!) Cheers!
Super Lube makes a teflon multi purpose grease US Patent No. 4,396,514 , has a temp range from -65 to +650 F. They make a grease that goes to -43F as well. They make a spray on synthetic lubricant with Syncolon, temp range -45 to +450F.

I see everyone else took the words out of my mouth: “Wow!”. But in the sprit if adding more good vibes to the world here’s repeating those r words anywho. Wow! Your stuff is awesome. Than you for putting good advice, positive vibes and kind honesty into the world. Keep on keeping on. Thank you. Best, Keith
I ride an e-bike everyday no matter the weather. I live in Winnipeg, Canada and sustained -40C is a norm for our winters. My e-bike also lives outside under a bike cover all year (the battery comes inside in winter though). Never had any problems. And stay pretty warm. The trick is to buy ski gear. There's tons of options and cheaper prices and are built for high winds/speed, falls, ways to vent the heat and obviously and most importantly, the cold. I have more problems with over heating the under heating when biking.
Wow totally cool, fantastically thorough video. Western Mountaineering is without question. Regular battery stuff always does better than rechargeable devices. Thanks very the information
Thanks for watching!! I actually decided not to film during this one, so I could just “enjoy” it :) but I compiled footage from others and will be putting a recap video out this week- hope you enjoy!
When i was commuting to work at -25C, my air fork froze and stayed in pushed in position, so yea, negative temps affect air in chambers. :) Great tips/review!
Point of clarification -- He didn't complete the race. Rather, he safely made it to checkpoint 2 without sleep, then scratched, along with most other riders. That, by itself, is worthy of congratulations this year! :) Only 3 bicycles went the distance.
Great recap! It was nice to meet you on Sunday after the race. That was a beast of race for me. My first of the sort. I had lots of technicals that made my wanting to go past CP 2 a non starter. I will do a lot of things differently next year. Thanks for the vids!
Definitely a beast of a race! Always learning :) I’ve got a recap video coming out soon - ps, what’s your name? RUclips doesn’t show it on the comments…
Thanks for sharing, that is extremely useful! That was a cold weekend, we XC skied in West Yellowstone in full puffy gear that I can rarely stand to wear. Looking forward to getting back to riding at least the 60K FP again in the future.
Excellent video! I raced the shorter version this year, which ended up being 20min…I think the start temp was near -30…brrr what a chilly day! Congrats on finishing!
Thanks for watching 🤙 and good work on the truncated 60k 🙌 I did not finish though - I stopped at CP2 / Harriman… I was happy with the ride and effort, and felt good … just didn’t feel like another 10 hours laced with hike a bike :) recap video coming soon 🤙 ride on!
I have always wanted to do Fat Pursuit, I has horrified when i saw what the temps were going to be, and pretty happy I wasn't on the starting line. Maybe in the future
I also use SPOT X with night core reserve battery and my bike computer has a pack I can add a hand warmer I also used the NITECORE summit heated battery. However non has been tested below -9C. I need to get somewhere cold.
Ok serous question. How many electronic shifting was out there? I’m still not on board with it because of growing up in Winnipeg. It gets colder than -45 witch stops almost everything. If they made diesel gear shifters, maybe.
@@DirtyTeethMTB im still riding one gear but indoor riding seems like more than one could be good. In Toronto and anywhere I can ride to one is plenty but the indoor thing gets old fast unless doing the erg structured stuff. Also in my 40's I gave it a try during covid and have not drank alcohol since. I have had a couple other accomplishments with indoor trainers but quitting alcohol has been the thing I'm most proud of and didn't know I needed. I tried watching your trainer video while eating and turned it off but will give it another try one day. Ha! Ya got me! 💩
Yeah, extra dark when it cold I can deal with… but never had them “freeze” and not go back to clear during night riding :) thanks for watching and commenting!!
Our friend Jonathan B. was there. He regaled us with the carnage.
If it’s Jonathan from IF, I’m sure he had plenty of stories :) one to remember 😀

Thank you for your efforts in continuing to produce these great videos. The mental toughness it takes to do an event like this is remarkable!

In those temps my hose and nozzle would slush up or freeze also. 🤔😜, great video 👍
Thanks for watching!

Great reminder about squishy forks in cold temps ! Ride on :)
Your videos are the Best! You put in an Amazing effort and fortunately did not suffer any injuries from the Extreme cold.
Yes, it was definitely chilly 🥶
That’s so impressive ! Congrats on completing the race

As Jonathan said… saved me some typing
Wow, super-cold temps! Respect Alan, it takes a special kind of person with extreme weather experience. Glad you persevered without injury, well done!
Thanks for the kind words- it was definitely a test ! Ride on :)
Great video! Excited to see part 2 on the Fat Pursuit.

Wow, you are an absolute beast. Very impressive lad! I’m 49 and with 13 knee surgeries including 4 ACL’s anything below 0 makes for a painful ride.

I don’t know anyone who uses electronic shifting for these type of events

Ha! Ya got me! 💩
You're making me jealous I've never ridden in anything that cold I don't even remember the last time I've been anywhere that cold! No fair.
Haha! Funny how temps that being thoughts of misery to most, are exciting to some… 🙌
Was the InReach that failed carried externally on body or on the bike?
It was on his bike - didn’t wanna deal with taking it on and off of different layers, etc to keep signal
What rear rack are you using on your Big Iron?
Carver ti fat raq
Ironically I had a 530 with me but used the 1040 (which as noted, failed)…
🤷🏻♂️ haha!
What valve stems are you using?
On the fatty, just the generic ones that came with my HED wheels… no issues - ride on!
If you use 11 speed SRAM, I'll send you a GX Gripshift to try.
Thanks so much for the offer :) I’m on 12spd eagle though- ride on!
I noticed my photochromic glasses getting super dark at just 17 degrees Fahrenheit, so -45 would seem plenty cold to do it
