So to enter a special stage you had to run as fast as you can for a long period of time until you entered the boost mode which will teleport you to the special stage. This shows that Sonic was faster in the BETA and shows from where the time traveling mechanic idea from Sonic CD came. The BETA looks much better in my opinion then the final product. I still love the final product but this looks much faster and fun.
Fanmade > Actual Prototype, wow. You could basically say that Sparkling Zone Theme is better than the final sonic 1 too. Since it was made in modern times when people could more easily make genesis music and have it sound good.
DESOFFICIAL1 That and those disgusting Yellow springs. We get you're using a netter colour pallete, but the Yellow springs were meant to look weak, now they look like happy-go-lucky trampolines.
This is a great beta version ;). I loved the backgrounds for marble zone, sparkling zone en zone 2 and 3 from clockwork zone :p Also it was interesting to see those robot bunnies in action. Tnx for the playthrough.
A demake is the opposite of a remake, where you make the content less quality than the original. An example would be demaking super mario world onto the NES instead of the SNES.
whoever made this did a great job of implementing beta elements based on screenshots and other bits of information about the game's development... and then randomly screwed around with the synthesizer settings for some of the music for no reason, and made the colour palette match the grainy faded screenshots from old magazines - neither of these two changes make any sense.
ArcaneSylph I'm aware of differences in the music in the sonic 2 beta builds, but those were differences that still sounded like they were intended to sound like that at that point in the game's development - there's nothing clever about making the melodic line from the labyrinth zone music sound like it is being played on a chain saw (along with a bunch of other examples of unnecessarily harsh and unmusical sounds being used that I can't remember off the top of my head - i seem to recall final zone music being turned to ear rape, too?) That's just broken for the sake of brokenness. there's no reason why it would be like that in a real beta version of the game when they would've had demo tracks recorded by the composer with proper musical equipment as a basis for what they were trying to accomplish with the megadrive/genesis soundchip.
End of Act 1: Wait... the experts known as Razor and Zenon didn't get the special stage? Outrageous! End of Act 2: They got 50 rings, and yet, the giant ring didn't bother to show up. Huh? End of Act 3: OH... I GET IT... YOU HAVE TO GET INTO WARP SPEED TO ENTER IT... HEH HEH... OH BOY...
I remember seeing the real beta game back in a 1991 Sega Power magazine and one element I remember especially especially in the 2 Level (Marble Zone) where it showed Sonic seemingly balancing himself on some yellow slanted tiles that he could stand on via the background. Still this is a good/relevant but tough hack which I prefer over the original.
I see something fairly different in Green Hill Zone, and Star Light. I see something different in Marble, and Clock Work. I see something largely different in Sparkling, Labyrinth.
I loved the lighter shade of blue so much that I hacked it into my revision 2 ROM of the finished game. Reminds me of the color of the old "gumball eyes" Sonic bars you could get from an ice cream truck.
those special stages hurt my eyes! X3 other then that i have to say i love how spring yard or as it calls it here sparkling zones background looks. kinda gives off a kinda erley version of casino night zone kinda vibe to it and same with labrynth zone as it looks more lively then just the bland wall in the original game though that problem seams to have been carried over to scrap brain or clock work zone as it calls it here :3

There should be a hack with the real stage orders: initally the stage order is the one you see in the official select stage screen. Green Hill, Labyrinth, Marble, Star Light, Spring Yard, Scrap Brain
Labyrinth zone as we actually know it sure...They would have adujsted the difficulty I guess. I once read an interview of the main concepters, they said that the maps in Sonic 1 were badly designed because it did not allowed the action speed you can get in sonic 2.
