I guess it depends in what you're looking for. Any month is a great time as NZ isn't as packed with tourists compared to other countries but summer generally has the best weather. Defs July-August would be the best to see the South Island because it's just another world down there when it's covered in snow. Would probably avoid late December and early-Jan as things tend to close down. Hope that's helpful :))
