To be honest. When I saw Toph at first I didn't even know she had vision problems. For Sheldon he wasn't originally supposed to be autistic and is just a smart man child (hence why he's antagonistic at the start) but he did end up being very much autistic. An example would be in young sheldon when missy (I think that's her name) can tell exactly what's happening in photos but sheldon can't. That definitely is an autistic trait. 3:28 When I found out that Julia exists, I wanted to cry because it made me happy to know that there is a character from Sesame Street who is also autistic! :)
I wouldn't have thought of them when being asked to list disabilities but it is a disability. This is because it is the inability to make certain sound with your mouth. This can be due to many different reasons. People also descriminate against people with speech impediments Edit: they also get infantalised because of inability to make certain noises being related to children. I know someone with lambdacism and rhotacism who has gone through infantalisation and bullying over it Edit 2: also speech impediments can be the result/cause other disabilities. Untreated speech impediments can cause people to have struggle learning to read and write. People with dysarthria slur their speech due to brain damage whereas ankyloglossia and apraxia is a result of the brain not being able to move the toungue properly (varying in how extreme)

okay- since I'm autistic the fact that disabilities like autism, wheelchairs, prosthetics, etc are more prominent in media now than when I was younger makes me SO HAPPY. when I was a younger, I was basically taught that I wasn't normal, and that nobody with disabilities was normal, WHICH ISNT TRUE. It really holds up the fact that representation DOES MATTER.
I'm planning to include characters with many disabilities in my stories. I have something that we're still trying to get diagnosed, where sometimes my limbs give out completely. There are times where some people don't understand that I'm born different and I'm not like the others while almost the rest of the people understand that I'm different.
autism (and i assume adhd) can cause social anxiety. autism definitely, as autism and anxiety is not a rare combination. i also have autism and social anxiety btw !
One of my friends has speech impediment since birth. She always speaks with sheeshing sounds so it's sometimes hard to understand what she says but I always try to. She was bullied in her childhood for her voice + she has health problems + she was raised by strict parents (especially very nervous angry mother) in multiple children family, so it is very struggling for her. The Muppet Movie and the sequel are such cozy movies, I'm so glad other people remember it 😭 also I agree with you about Walter. Being a Muppet born into a human family is a pretty blatant metaphor for being "different" imo.
I love that movie! I have seen it so many times and I agree that Walter could be autistic-coded. His love for the Muppets could be his "narrowed" interest. Funny how Jim Parsons plays his real-life equivalent in the musical number who is also speculated to be playing an autistic-coded character?! (Sheldon) I LOVE Muppets Most Wanted
Wilt from Foster's home for imaginary friends is a first main character with disabilities in Cartoon Network series. He has no arm, he has lazy eye and he is traumatized(not PTSD)
I appriciate how speech impediments are used here. While each charcter was nice to see, I wish my disability was represented. I have what's known as vocal paralysis where I'm only speaking with one working vocal cord (due to a surgical accident). So my voice sounds sounds deep and raspy compared to the average lady. I think it would be cool to see a character like this having to face things such as let's say trying to speak in a loud environment or using alternative methods of expression (rather than just verbal communication) such as hobbies, way of dress, etc., or even goofy scenes of there being something like an occasional popscile/ ice cream stand when they need something to take care of thier voice and there's just this person sitting there waiting for business (bonus points if they throw in a cartooon-y light showing down on the stand and/ or an angel sound effect). Sorry if that came off as selfish since I'm aware there's more than likely others out there who have not so common disabilities out there too.
it sounds nice, you would just have to be really carefull cause... yeah i bet many people would interpret that character as being a trans women instead of a women who just happens to have a deep voice, but hopefully in the future, people can be accepting enough of trans people and also people like you that if a show who has a character like this and they clarify what kind of charater they are, people wont spark a huge controversy
@@marmolejomartinezjoseemili9043 I agree with you, reguardless of folks's thoughts on the subject I don't want to be disrespectful to that community. I guess how you'd have to do it though would be to make sure you have a solid introduction explaining that right off the base. When I have to explain my story here's how it goes: "... and you're probably noticing my voice might sound a little 'off' to you. Little deeper and raspier than the average gal. Well, as a baby, while the doctor was trying to save my life at 2 months old, he accidently nicked my vocal cord causing me to sound like this. No need to feel sorry for me though; I've spoken like this ever since I could first speak." And obviously as the introduction goes on, people can like things that are both more girly or boyish things (ex. girls can read comic books, boys can go into stuff like ballet) but in subtle ways (not by saying this is a girl every 5 words or so lol) by showing things that are on the "traditionally" (yes, I understand times have changed now) girly side like seeing the character put on makeup, having the character buy things like nail polish or dresses, etc.
@@marmolejomartinezjoseemili9043 Also thanks for bringing that point up. I've been exposed to others who are trans but in terms of the idea I originally thought of, I never would've taken that point into consideration

as a teen with autism. I'm 90 percent sure that jack from bluey has autism. pretty much everything jack does in his screen time I did at some point in my early childhood. which means he likely pretty high functioning. so much so that it seems like adhd but is more likely asd.
Yep, I'd quite prefer him being autistic as someone who is also a teen with autism. The main consensus is that he has Adhd though. It's no impossible to have both so maybe that's the case. By the way we don't really use functioning labels anymore due to what they imply about a person. Very simple mistake so don't worry about it :)
@@project_letters the only reason that I use functioning lables is because A I don't remember which way on the spectrum I am. and B everyone I know uses it and has used it all my life so I just do it because it's the way I grew up. I could use asburgers syndrome but that phrase is kinda even worse because of who dr asburgers was lol.
Ah, you see that's the issue. We don't use functioning labels for a reason and considering what you just said I can see why you don't understand. You can't be on one side of the spectrum because it isn't a line spectrum that goes "mild -> severe". It a circle and there are multiple different places you might fall within that spectrum based on you and who you are. That's why you can't be "low" or "high" functioning. It also creates a negative stigma around "low functionality" as it sounds negative. That's why we say "with more support needs". It also means people that are high functioning might be rejected support if they sound fully capable from the "high functioning". My sister sees it differently and says it implies that she doesn't function like everyone else and that she just is highly working but not quite there which is offensive Edit: to help explain since you actually seem to care, functioning labels don't really work because there's no way to blanketly classify someone as "high functioning". I'm highly academic but I'm hopeless socially. It has left me lost and isolated. I'm getting better btw, unrelated but there. My other friend who is autistic often finds himself covering his ears in sensory overload in shops, is dyspraxic, dyslexic and requires a computer and a reading pen for tests. He occasionally needs a learning assistant in the room. Yet he's fine at social stuff. Of course not perfect but he's far better than me. He gets anxiety but he will order things for me in shops because I panic at every turn about talking to people. There's another person who will remain for more anonymous than the other two for reasons you'll see soon. He hardly speaks to anyone, especially if his brother isn't around. He can't handle large groups of people or lots of attention or he will run and hide. He has had to be restrained before. Restraining should be a last ditch effort to be clear. However, he is super smart in the areas of planets and geography. Basically super academic. And lastly, I know another person who is the best at science in the whole of my year but literally is away from anyone else in every situation. In the morning they just go straight to tutor, they don't sit with anyone at break or lunch even if their friends are right there in the sane room as them. They even have migrated to the school kitchen to get away as far as I know. In short, autism comes in all shapes and sizes so you can't be high or low functioning because the blanket term disregards so much for autistic individuals
Now this is beatifull, As someone who has OCD, Anxiety, HDHD, and Autism, seeing my favorite characters have it makes be feel better about having it. Though, I kinda feel like some of these characters were not conformed of having it.

Teen With Autism I agree
Pretty good representation of some people with autism yes! Everyone so different !!
Autism can get a lot more severe than that, Julia is an exception but I think some shows depict it incorrectly or inaccurately and some people don't realize Autism is a spectrum and it's not always that mild

I didn't realize speech impediments counted as disabilities.
I wouldn't have thought of them when being asked to list disabilities but it is a disability. This is because it is the inability to make certain sound with your mouth. This can be due to many different reasons. People also descriminate against people with speech impediments
Edit: they also get infantalised because of inability to make certain noises being related to children. I know someone with lambdacism and rhotacism who has gone through infantalisation and bullying over it
Edit 2: also speech impediments can be the result/cause other disabilities. Untreated speech impediments can cause people to have struggle learning to read and write. People with dysarthria slur their speech due to brain damage whereas ankyloglossia and apraxia is a result of the brain not being able to move the toungue properly (varying in how extreme)
@@project_letters yes, for me dyspraxia affected my way of speaking which caused me to stutter a lot when i was younger. i got speech therapy though and it helped me alot. i barely stutter at all now

No need to feel sorry for me though; I've spoken like this ever since I could first speak." And obviously as the introduction goes on, people can like things that are both more girly or boyish things (ex. girls can read comic books, boys can go into stuff like ballet) but in subtle ways (not by saying this is a girl every 5 words or so lol) by showing things that are on the "traditionally" (yes, I understand times have changed now) girly side like seeing the character put on makeup, having the character buy things like nail polish or dresses, etc.

as a teen with autism.
My sister sees it differently and says it implies that she doesn't function like everyone else and that she just is highly working but not quite there which is offensive
Edit: to help explain since you actually seem to care, functioning labels don't really work because there's no way to blanketly classify someone as "high functioning".
