- www.ted.com In the 1970s, Diana Nyad set long-distance swim records that are still unbroken. Thirty years later, at 60, she attempted her longest swim yet, from Cuba to Florida. In this funny, powerful talk at TEDMED, she talks about how to prepare mentally to achieve an extreme dream, and asks: What will YOU do with your wild, precious life?

Interesting how many haters are rating her on her looks. I thought we were here to hear the talk and learn from her authentic message and her gutsy endeavor, not compare her to a barbie doll.
She is the only presenter on TEDtalks who I've seen get a standing ovation. She is a huge inspiration to me.
And she did what she said, she finished the swim on her 5th try. What an awesome woman!
She said she would and she did! Congratulations! 👏🎉 Diana you are such a wonderful inspiration to us all. Thank you!
You can feel the power of her mind and body through this video. She's vibrating with energy. Can extenuating, challenging athletic pursuit give you that? Amazing.
Wow... wow. She was stung twice by a box jelly and lived to tell the tale? Not only that, she is going to attempt the swim again?! She is courage incarnate. Unbelievable story.
I just relistened. She's really showing YOU can live your dream, do the work, that age doesnt have to get in the way. I love how she was ready to count in different languages like english, german, french to pass the time...very smart woman.
Wow, she's an unique person. So strong, brave and creative.
Diana you are a source of inspiration for me and im sure for a lot of folks like me who tend to quit when things get hard. Not because were not strong but rather because we are not aware of our strenght! So thank you for reminding me this fact! 💜💜💜
Exercise is the key to life. My fathers 62 and he looks better then most 40 year olds and he's as alert and alive as Diana. The key is to get that blood pumping till you break a sweat, 30 min every other day is all it takes. Oh yeah and eat your greens.
And she did swim from Cuba to Florida! Amazing!
Wonderful display of excellent public speaking coupled with an awesome story. This was very inspiring and I can't wait to hear how her next try goes!
This is one of the few non-technical speeches I've found worth my time to watch.
I love the comment about thinking on space and time after 50 hrs swimming. Fantastic. It is all about looking into that abyss and moving ever onward with ultra distance.
wow and wow, one of the most inspiring talks I have ever heard and so great that Diana finally did it........it is so amazing. Not only for her swim but her ability to really capture the audience......Diana, you need to do a lot more public speaking, you are sensational......love you and your determination.....go girl!
Yes I agree💯. May God be with you today and always! I hope that you have a nice day today. I'm Dr. Manuel Sanmiguel. How about you?
I'm a swimmer (not as long distances), and what she says is very true. When you're swimming you have a lot of thoughts, and you play many songs in your head. Preferably rock and heavy metal.
My first sea swimming competition I got caught in a current and couldn’t get out. There were a bunch of people ahead of me, and a bunch behind. I was stuck in the middle alone and I got scared and tired. I pushed myself by singing in my head, happy songs, motivational songs and the thoughts of “just a bit more”. It was me and the music in my head. Thankfully I finished but when I was stuck , the singing to myself got me through
AND SHE DID IT!!!!! Nyad is a force. And for all the attention she has sought and gained, she has a humble heart.
And she did it! Just saw the movie on Netflix.
What an incredible woman! I love her energy, it's infectious.
She is strong, beautiful, tough, intelligent, diligent, disçiplined, determined, funny, just freaking awe-inspiring and unstoppable. Love her!! What a role model.
I could listen to her sing all day!
"Live everyday with grace & passion keep on moving forward" You did it!! You are such a genuine inspiration TY!!!!! Love you !! You did it!!
She said she would and she did! Congratulations, all the best and thank you for being a great inspiration to all of us.
She finally did it and now NETFLIX will show a movie about it
Bravo! She finally did it today!!! After hearing her TED talk, INSPIRED.
Smile's. May God be with you today and always! I hope that you have a nice day today. I'm Dr. Manuel Sanmiguel. How about you?
ja, diese Frage müssen wir immer stellen - wunderbar. Was für eine Kraft - ..... und wie wunderbar, dass sie es noch geschafft hat - nie war sie so stark wie mit 64 Jahren. Wundervoll.
She depicted swimming perfectly..... deeply appreciated
WOW, I thought I was going to click and watch for a couple seconds, but this lady is VERY engaging, ended up watching the WHOLE thing.
Never heard of her before now, but I love her. She's so right, though composed through study. So strong, though challenged by idiosyncratic idiom, as are we all.
Jesus, the box jelly fish kills. OMG, I can't believe that happened. To say that sucks is an understatement.
she's smart, and she delivers a passionate message that will keep you concentrated. great talk
Congratulations, Diana! Very inspirational speech!
I think she looks great. Period.
Wonderful talk. I look up to you Diana.
She's quite inspirational. :) Loved her talk
Awesome lady, great singer, and also shares my birthday.
Ho sempre avuto un grande rispetto per questa donna straordinaria, dal suo primo tentativo... Lei è un esempio di forza, coraggio e concentrazione. Grande Diana per me sei una grande fonte di ispirazione ❤ grazie!
Thanks for this. "Courage" is a good word for what she's done! Remember, there's nothing stopping you from amazing all of us again! I'm sure there are more deadly animals to ignore in some ocean, somewhere :)

Amazing Inspiring Talk
What an amazing woman!
Espectacular, sencillamente espectacular ❤
this 60 year old woman can swim for 40 hours and i can't run for 10 minutes at 24? what a bullshit i am.
I really hope to have your amazing persistence and will. You make me wana try harder to reach my extreme dreams. thank you
And today you did it Diana. 🎉❤🎉
O.o
I don't understand how it's physically possible that she kept swimming after the first sting let alone the second...
SHE DID IT :)
Maravilhoso! E ela realizou o que queria !
I wonder if Diana has gone back and Thanked that 8 yr old school boy for suggestion of wearing a protective mask against jelly fish.:) Inspiring speech
She did. Cause she tells about that in her book.
That was wonderful!
i love her yeaaaaaah!!! at the end XD
Diana Nyad is a total stud muffin! A warrior!
How awesome!!
this was amazing.
Summary of the spirit of this talk in a quote of the best known song from the Flash Dance soundrack (Irene Cara - What A Feeling):
Take your passion and make it happen.
"Live it large, live it large!!" Awesome...
Same here! Couldn't turn it off. Bravo to the human spirit! We make what's meant to be; we don't do it by sitting on our asses.
Thx Diana
Good luck to her on the next try! Wondered what went wrong last time & now I know. The big blue sure is scary some times...
That is exactly what it was going through my mind while i was listening this speech. "If you do this as a sport or hobby or as a challenge or you are white(American, European, etc)Everyone will talk good things about you, you will appear on the media, etc...BUT IF YOU ARE JUST ANOTHER IMMIGRANT TRYING TO REACH AMERICAN LANDS NO ONE WILL GIVE YOU ANY AWARD OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT...NOT TO MENTION THAT THOSE PEOPLE GO THRU THE SAME CONDITIONS AS THIS LADY...BUT THE HUGE DIFFERENCE THAT THEY
Hope she makes it this time. Currently on her 6th and final attempt. Go, Diana!
She did that!
great talk
@WiskeyDickBomber who cares what she looks like? She has an inspirational talk and you want to rate her on her looks? Go read a book
Inspirational.
@somethought
:) nice to read good comments.
inspiring!
what an incredible person, and a beautiful woman; i've done various sports and the hardest was swimming. you think you're tough, try just swimming one mile
She had done it finally
Beautiful Soul
ExxxxxtrEEEME swimming! 0:15
@Spencerianism
I would imagine she wanted both. It is pretty clear in what she talks about.
incredible
A nyad is a water nymph from Greek mythology. She has a really appropriate last name!
Diana was the Greek goddess of the moon, the hunt, birthing and virgins.
I wonder how much her name affected her personality, or whether her parents chose the name for reasons they passed to her in her nurture or her genes.
Naming is a big responsibility.
have any of you felt the way shes does about anything in your life? you havent lived until you do.
Respect
so if she wanted to north and the gulf stream was going east, which direction did she swim? what's the equivalent distance she swam, must be like 90 miles...
Mille hourras pour un des plus braves et les plus brillants femme sur cette terre!
she has a great personality and I admire her spirit ... but I kinda thought this was about jellyfish!
Not a big deal really, but I looked her up, and the description of her website says she's trying it in the summer of 2011, it's not till your in the site that it says summer of 2012. If you see this, change it, what you are doing is admirable to say the least
Omg i love this
I hate my job hate this constant drama. I want this! (But family weight heavy on you sometimes)
@garjikbal Why climb a mountain? Because it is there. That is not for everyone. She came to a crossroads in her life and she chose this path. She is sharing the experience.
And in 2021 im watching this
@SuperSuperStrange JEALOUS JEALOUS JEALOUS JEALOUS...
Chuk norris swam from cuba to florida once. On the way he stung two jellyfish
Looks to me she has another 40 years, not 22
@gaiagale Happy new year to you too. I've been commenting on TED and other videos regularly, but with the volume of comments on popular youtube videos it's easy for comments to drown.
Which reminds me of another inspiring song (from A Goofy Movie); Tevin Campbell - Stand Out: watch?v=DD4VofgnOkU
I've been wanting to compile a playlist of such inspiring songs.
The theme paraphrased: Do what you love, be yourself, and don't be afraid to stand out while making the world a better place.
MAD PROPS, DIANA
To those who are bored after 5 minutes - you should learn some patience.!
The whole point is that her story builds and builds. If she whipped out the jellyfish within the 1st minute there'd be no context.
Cool speech/talk/lesson/message. ★★★★★
Katalyzt
unbelieveble . but congratulations
@somethought I think she looks great for a 60 year old.
