  • www.ted.com In the 1970s, Diana Nyad set long-distance swim records that are still unbroken. Thirty years later, at 60, she attempted her longest swim yet, from Cuba to Florida. In this funny, powerful talk at TEDMED, she talks about how to prepare mentally to achieve an extreme dream, and asks: What will YOU do with your wild, precious life?
TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at www.ted.com/translate

Interesting how many haters are rating her on her looks. I thought we were here to hear the talk and learn from her authentic message and her gutsy endeavor, not compare her to a barbie doll.

Wow... wow. She was stung twice by a box jelly and lived to tell the tale? Not only that, she is going to attempt the swim again?! She is courage incarnate. Unbelievable story.

I just relistened. She's really showing YOU can live your dream, do the work, that age doesnt have to get in the way. I love how she was ready to count in different languages like english, german, french to pass the time...very smart woman.

Exercise is the key to life. My fathers 62 and he looks better then most 40 year olds and he's as alert and alive as Diana. The key is to get that blood pumping till you break a sweat, 30 min every other day is all it takes. Oh yeah and eat your greens.

I'm a swimmer (not as long distances), and what she says is very true. When you're swimming you have a lot of thoughts, and you play many songs in your head. Preferably rock and heavy metal.

My first sea swimming competition I got caught in a current and couldn’t get out. There were a bunch of people ahead of me, and a bunch behind. I was stuck in the middle alone and I got scared and tired. I pushed myself by singing in my head, happy songs, motivational songs and the thoughts of “just a bit more”. It was me and the music in my head. Thankfully I finished but when I was stuck , the singing to myself got me through

A nyad is a water nymph from Greek mythology. She has a really appropriate last name!
Diana was the Greek goddess of the moon, the hunt, birthing and virgins.
I wonder how much her name affected her personality, or whether her parents chose the name for reasons they passed to her in her nurture or her genes.
    Naming is a big responsibility.
