I think your brain kind of speeds up it's processing when you are going faster so you have a slower perception of time and so makes you feel like you are going slower even when you are going real fast

The driver wouldt need to look to the sides to get a sense of speed because we have an almost 180 degree vision. Watching a flat screen is totally different because the fov is usually under 80 degrees and its flat, not curved like our eyes.

I rewatched the video after at least 2 years 5 months and this isn't a particularly cringe video anymore. Now there's people putting towels on their heads to loosely mimic a woman's haircut and tell a lame joke, role-playing as mother, father and son.😊

I remember when my dad used to take me to the Indy 500 when I was a kid. Pretty much involved sitting in the stands and every couple seconds you would see a few brightly colored blurs followed by a deafening roar. The TV cameras really do make the cars look slow as hell.

I wish they'd show more static cameras. They really show how shockingly fast F1 cars are
I’ve been to a racing event and I can tell you when the camera focuses on one position it makes the cars look fast but if you follow them it really appears slower
You can do that with your own eyes too. Follow a car with your eyes or keep them focused on one spot. Heck, you can do that while driving too. Look ahead at the white dividing marks or look at them from out your side window.
It's all about perspective buddy. 240 mph is insane even from the grandstands. But when a wall and 5 feet of road are all that's in between you, follow with your eyes all you want they're gone in a second.

The cams on the cars do a perfect job of the speed, it's just so hard for people to comprehend how fast it is because of, well, how fast it is. It takes seeing a race in person and developing a sense/understanding of how fast the cars go.

one word: sponsors. publicity boys won't be happy with static cameras because viewers can't see their products in 4K.

Take your car to the autobahn and floor it, you dont feel it going straight.
Your brain adapts to the speed very quickly and when you hit even a reasonable speed limit it feels like youre crawling.
Until you hit a corner and feel the Gs, then its like ohshit where the brakes.

I couldn't imagine how weird it must feel to get done driving a race for an hour or two at 160-200mph and then just sit down. Senna said it's like being in a tunnel. It must be surreal to step in and out of

when you drive 200-250 km/h on the Autobahn for hours and then take the exit ramp at 80 … it feels like you're coming to a full stop
Same with planes in the sky. They look a lot slower until you’re in one and see a different one close to your plane

I went to the 2016 Melbourne GP and for qualifying we sat between the final turns 15/16 Schumacher stand. The real eye speed is incredible to witness. I remember seeing them fly down the small straight that leads to the final 2 turns the speed looked like car was going straight off no way they wound pull up at 250KPH in 1.5 seconds. But they do it’s like someone fast forwarding then suddenly press play.
Then the car comes around past the pits and final turn and the grip and downforce is insane the car is so glued and the tires look like their gonna explode. And the drivers makes it around T16. Like he’s being sucked to the ground the faster he goes. I can’t imagine what T11/12 are like to watch. Also remember they can lap Albert Park a 5 1/2 KM circuit in less than 1:22. Honestly TV doesn’t to it justice like seeing it in real life. If ever you get the chance please don’t hesitate go you won’t regret it.
Oh another thing on race day we sat at the Webber stand halfway down the main straight and when they hit the final turn the sound of the car going over the rumble strip is so loud and amazing you can feel the vibration in your chest.
They need more still cameras during broadcasting. Similar to Nascar, really gives the viewer a better perspective on how fast they are traveling
Because its a round track and a lot easier to film when theyre not zigzagging through corners at above 100ks an hour
That camera captures 2.5 seconds at full speed and sometimes pole and last positions are 2 o 3 seconds away 😱

The one that gets me is Eau Rouge, insane how they stick going up that hill. Also Indycar on ovals, holy shit they go so fast so close to one another.

There’s a great video on this, I don’t know from who anymore. It talks about these cars being much wider and the screens you watch them from are also less high. This means the car is much more in frame instead of the moving surroundings

imagine you're at the circuit to watch the race, you just wait about 2 minutes for a lap to get finished and then you see the cars pass by in 2 seconds, then, you sait again.
I remember going to a nascar race and it is unreal how fast they are going and it was at one of the slower tracks

The problem is how good the camera work got. First of all wide aspect ratio, if you cropped that video to 4:3 it would look much faster. And then the stability and resolution. But being able to keep the car absolutely centered on the screen without any blur makes it feel as if the car was static and the surroundings were moving. We need more static shots
Notice how when there's a Safety Car, it's driver is pushing that road Supercar to the limit and fighting hard to keep it on the road
Meanwhile in the background, F1 cars are easily following it looking boringly slow

I have been thinking about this for a long time that they should go back to having more wide angled camera lenses like they used to have in F1. When the perspective increases it also looks like they are driving a lot faster! I can't understand why they don't use this today on the onboard cameras... It would add to the show!
I'm not entirely sure, but i've heard that the current cameras are the way they are because sponsors are more visible.

If you ever wanna know how fast that stuff is id say try F1 in project cars in vr. Its wild how fast those drivers really go and its nice to see ag least a glimpse from their perspective with you in control
I asked my friend why is F1 not popular here in USA especially Nascar has such big market. He said the F1 has way too many turns comparing to Nascar and can be confusing to Americans. I honestly rolled out laughing and dude was dead serious 😭

On the onboard camera your perception of distance is altered because there aren’t many objects that you can’t compare the length of to since you’re going so fast

If you ever get a chance, go to an F1 race. I have been lucky enough to go to two of them so far in my life and hope to be able to go to another one before the good lord takes me away.

The camera feels just like when im on a train. I feel like it moves slowly but when i look from the outside; it is fast.

The issue is the aspect ratio used. The wide-screen 16:9 ratio takes the speed out of the footage. If you had a more vertical aspect ratio, especially for the onboard footage, it would look a whole lot better
Definitely sped up, when your watching from 1st person it takes about 2.5-3 seconds to get to the 2nd corner from the 1st. But while watching from 3rd person he gets from 1st corner to 2nd corner in like 1.5 seconds.

I've been watching racing for years. Still be whippin like rockets. Easy. The difference in visuals is the spectacle itself. You must be there to fully experience the race.
It looks faster from the other view because you're standing still, on broadcasts the cameras move along with the action and from the car camera you can only really see the scenery go by
