Back to basics - Testing flow and radiator capacity

  • I wanted to do some experimenting with only a single miner in a 10 gallon tank to see how far I could push it with a small radiator. The long term goal is to make an at-home immersion box that is as quiet as any household fan (or less).

    What is the room temp air? And what are the chip temps on a radiator like this? Thanks!

    I would recommend a different cooling liquid. Oil or mineral oil erodes. Instead use a non-conductive liquid. Die-electric is one (bitcool)

    hi, what is the temperature of oil with machine on and without the machine off?

  • @bitcoinmechanic

    This is a totally vanilla miner? Nothing removed at all? Fans left on, thermal paste etc. Just literally took a miner and submerged it?
    If so - did you use braiinsOS or something to modify what the fans are doing exactly?
    Thanks for the experimentation!

      I am using Braiins OS+ to tolerate the fans being in oil. But outside of that, yes, just completely left as-is.

      @@coinheated5365 Thanks. I have an S19J for which braiins doesn't currently work. I assume that if I submerged it as it the fans would likely get destroyed fairly quickly?

    • @coinheated5365
      @coinheated5365  2 года назад

      @@bitcoinmechanic Nothing will get destroyed, but also nothing will happen. The fans won't register the right speed, and stock firmware can't tolerate it lower than full. You need to either have third party firmware, or fan simulators. I've found that a fan simulator with a 2-way 4 pin splitter works. The simulator plugs into all four pins on the Y adapter, and the fan itself plugs into the one that is only three pins. The reason is the simulator returns the "valid" RPM regardless of what the actual RPM of the fan is. So it is technically possible to run an S19 in oil with stock firmware. You just need the fan simulators.

      @@coinheated5365 I think braiins will have something for s19j's pretty soon which will allow me to run without the simulators.

    • @coinheated5365
      @coinheated5365  2 года назад

      @@bitcoinmechanic Yes, it will be soon. There is already firmware out there that is beginning to trickle out a bit, so it shouldn't be long.

    What silicon adhesive / caulking are you using to avoid the mineral oil from deteriorating the tanks original caulking / sealant?

    • @coinheated5365
      @coinheated5365  2 года назад

      They use Silicone Sealant for the tanks. It is specifically recommended by Bitcool. So nothing was done to the tanks before oil.

    Would you leave the fans on for at home unit? I am going to start testing out an old s9 on an immersion system and was planning on removing the fans.

    • @CaptainAdaquit
      @CaptainAdaquit 3 года назад +2

      Because I have found that it gives better overall flow, and if it is upright, the heat won't dissipate fast enough. With fans, no one spot ever gets too hot. This is also just a test to see how far I can push a single miner for power. Or, one card even, as the power supply isn't strong enough to take all three cards to the limit in oil.

    • @thegianmendoza
      @thegianmendoza 3 года назад

      @@CaptainAdaquitInteresting. I was just assuming that it makes sense to remove the fans because they aren't designed for the coolant. Also the benefit of power savings by not running fans. What kind of temps were you getting at the pcb to make it a concern? I am out in AZ so temp control is a big issue for me. Thanks for the response!

      @@thegianmendoza The way I've been running mine, I've found adding the fans produces a much better overall cooling effect than fanless. Even if only a single fan is running, it's amazing at how different the temps are according to the miner.

    Wondering also where you buy your miners from? I was buying on Alibaba but they have banned it now, looking for advice on a reliable source with fair pricing. thanks :) like your videos you have posted.
