Wow... didnt know that One Punch Man is basically just Studio Bones using Madhouse resources. Lmao. No wonder Mob Psycho 100 is soo great.
No. That's complete BS. there are only 2 staff from Bones that worked on OPM. In fact, OPM had more actual in-house madhouse staff than Mob 100 had in-house Bones staff.
@@arcverson4963 they had a lot of free lancers, brought in by the amazin shingo natsume (in-house director at madhouse). Most weren't at all in-house, they were just talented af and OPM had an average budget so this was just a passion project among colleagues and friends.
@@mulanomula Yes they had a lot of free lancers, just like literally every other anime that isn't made by KyoAni or Ufotable. So why not show the same energy to Bones or Wit for example who use freelancers as well?
We need it back
Bones?
Isn't this the same studio that made the Highest Rated Anime of all time
Who is here after Madhouse just dropped another masterpiece Frieren Beyond Journeys End
Madhouse is the Valve of anime industry. They are so good, yet they output so little.
Atleast Valve didn't go bankrupt slowly
mad house house has basically become mappa
@@joaopedromelopeet8712 atleast mappa can make quality
@@christopher4227 I don't think u get what I meant
@@christopher4227 mappa is pretty much the sucessor of Madhouse
Pretty interesting stuff, I'm hoping OPM's success will help Madhouse make more great anime again.
EDIT: I'm aware OPM season 2 ended up being made by J.C Staff.
+RogerSmith2004 I think it sold 8k DVD+BD first volume first week. So, they should have made some profit from it. In addition, ONE, creator of the original web comic, stated that he will push towards towards a second season. Therefore, the conditions are pretty good.
MurderofPhoenixes NA Yeah, I'm not really worried about the series getting a second season, I've just noticed that usually an increase in sales usually allows for more creative freedom. Hence the Golden Era of anime being put forth during times of economic prosperity.
+MurderofPhoenixes NA it sold 11k
+Vetro One Punch Man is huge in Japan, it's first and 2nd manga volumes have each sold over a million copies and overall averages 700-800k per volume, the anime sold 11k which is pretty great in terms of sales. OPM was also listed as 24 in top selling media franchises in Japan (FYI the anime sales were not counted in this and it beat detective conan, just to show some perspective). It is definitely equal if not more popular in japan. Also the original web manga also gets millions of hits.
BTW not that big of a fan OPM, Just wanted to let you know.
+Jeremiah Gottwald me neither. I am more into Madhouse's previous works like Reign (despite the ugly as fuck design which I love for some reason), Paprika, Trigun, Texnokyze or watever.
So, MAPPA is to MADHouse, what TRIGGER is to GainaX?
+LDranzer1 Exactly!
Also cloverworks is to a1-pictures
@@jayvz4441 A-1 pictures is still working fine with Kaguya-sama and sao
@@animenewsandfacts8307 thats not the point of what I said but yeah
Yeah, both Madhouse and Gainax were on prime, now their unofficial successors are on the spotlight~
It's inevitable.
I'd have to say Madhouse is easily my favorite animation studio. When most think of the greatest anime of all time, Madhouse is undeniably prominent. This video was very intriguing and definitely well researched like your other videos.
I'd love to see you make a similar video about studio Ufotable. I think they're an interesting company and despite not having nearly the same level of history compared to Madhouse, I believe that you'll be able to bring to our attention interesting facts about the company worth discussing.
+ShintaiReviews Honestly, I hesitated to watch this video because I'm a big Madhouse fanboy and thought it was going to be a baseless video bashing them. Agree with all your points and would love to see Ufotable done as well.
Nah, A-1 Pictures (noticeably known for making the Saint Onii-san anime adaption) and David Productions (JoJo anime, obv lol) did a better job.
Nah, you're simply wrong, NoFairPlay.
I mean they have Monster so they automatically won.
Is your profile picture Jacksepticeye as Josuke?
With their new anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, they're cookin'.
I dont consider Madhouse to really have "fallen" as you say, perhaps declined a bit but certainly not down for the count. I still enjoy the shows they put out and they seem to be well-received overall.
+firstlightrevan Oh, the "fall" I was referring to was more internal. Externally in terms of output, yeah, not really a fall there. Just a bit of bumps and a huge reduction in original stuff.
The Canipa Effect Understood. NGNL and "The Irregular at magic high" are pretty high on my list, so still like their stuff even if they are just adaptations.
RevanTheGray they don't make second seasons anymore
I'd consider that a fall
It was a great joke that they didn't make second seasons for Light Novel adaptations, but they literally announced Overlord Season 2 in March.
+the canipa effect Huge reduction in original stuff isn't necessarily due to change in staff but change in the times. There is more demand for adaptations nowadays and it's probably more economically feasible anyway. Also originality doesn't necessarily make for better or more enjoyable anime.
Madhouse is back
I wonder how many people realized that he used a clip from Monster Musume and not Monster by Naoki Urasawa -_-
crimsonshadow42 joke xD
I'm hardly what you'd call a Monster fan. Heard so much about it that I didn't really enjoy it. I've seen like 80% of it and just couldn't muster up enough will to watch the last like 5-10 episodes and finish the series but even I noticed that xD; But I'm drunk right now and thought maybe I just missed the clip :P :P :P
Navsangeet Singh you should really finish monster I understand the last couple of episodes are kind of boring but the pay off is worth it in my opinion but the end does kind of feel like a cliff hanger
That did look a little too happy didn’t it
@@CJDNMB Monster stays consistent throughout, so if he already doesn't like it then the end wouldn't change much
I just want to imagine nakamura with the spray paint can tagging on madhouse's main building "bones rules- watch con revo" XD.
3:25 not the monster i remember lmao
Dr. Tenma was a harem hero secretly all along
Iam from 2021 MAD HOUSE is no where to be seen in anime industry
On the other hand MAPPA needs to chill, they don't miss a opportunity to flex.
That's the same thing happened to Madhouse they are having and producing shows at the same time, hope MAPPA will not collapse since they still doing what ruins Madhouse.
madhouse is working on Sonny Boy right now, and it's an excellent project, brought to you by the people who worked on Perfect Blue. Also, they put out A Place Further than the Universe in 2018 and it was also amazing
But MAPPA's animations are really incredible, though

+Argo At first I thought you were talking about the original Monster, then I saw that shit....
I hope canipa watches monster cause its madhouse's best psychological anime and underrated.
Y'all are fucking dumb. He's talking about the Monster anime that came out in the early 2000's. Look at the timestamp on the frame. The Monster Musume clip is a joke.
I just want him to make a video about it :3
And anime of decade coming Frieren
"has changed drastically over the last SIX years."

>Madhouse has changed a whole lot in the last 12 years....
MAPPA has changed even more. Holy SH*T.
so that's the reason why we still don't have Black Lagoon season 3 :O
and yes, Rei Hiroe writing the manga slower than a corpse probably doesn't help -_-
I've always said Madhouse is my favorite studio, but this explains why their newer stuff is missing that "special something" I fell in love with from watching their older works.
Yeah MAPPA continues Madhouse's legacy undoubtedly with Dororo, Dorohedoro, God of Highschool, Jujutsu kaisen ect.
But unlike the Prime Madhouse it's weird right now
Aot too (just wait for pt. II)
Yeah but we need a madhouse x bones
Just like OPM
Or rather
Mappa x bones
Clear animation x great camera action
No
I loved Death Parade, and with a work like that, I'm sure the current team can make other great anime like it.
Studio Madhouse isn't just my favorite studio, but I just really love it altogether. Every once in a while I discover a BANGER anime and realize that it was made by Madhouse. And I didn't know that so many great directors and animators were orginally all part of Madhouse. This video about the fall of the studio that I love so damn much, really broke my heart. I cannot express this enough but I really, really hope that one day Madhouse will be a crazy big powerhouse that cranks out amazingly directed and animated anime again. I really do hope so.
I also dearly hope the same but after the departure of Masao Maruyama,my hope getting shallow
WIT,Trigger,Bones, and now Cloverworks are making original anime hits by gathering talented passionate peeps while I ain't seeing the same for current Madhouse who used to do the same back at its prime
Don't know what to expect from this year Madhouse's two anime,SonnyBoy and The Vampire Dies In No Time.. ain't seeing a single one talking about their current projects since all the talks are now going on is of its successor MAPPA who's producing anime back to back and getting declared as the best studio or something by the 'clowns'
@@joiboya I agree with you MAPPA is great studio but highly overated for clowns and newbie they only knew MAPPA because of AOT! For me Bones is the best studio currently right now they are a silent banger!
Well mappa is the successor of madhouse
Well, the thing that made Madhouse unique was that they were full of passion and always had unique ways of direction and writing, they saw making anime as art and something to be enjoyed.
Whereas MAPPA just overworks the staff, has a single director who basically directs every single one of their anime and accepts every job offer by sponsors; basically seeing anime as a job and not as art and passion. I think the difference between the two is quite noticable, especially if you look at what they adapt into anime.
In my opinion madhouse should continue berserk
I thought they were making new season of berserk isnt it?
+-Dash™ Pretty sure I don't believe the studio who's making it has been announced.
+Ten_Tails_Jack Berserk was done by OLM, who went on to form White Fox. And the new films were by Studio 4C.
Madhouse have never animated Berserk.
+gg94b I meant madhouse should pick up from where OLM left off
+Ten_Tails_Jack I can understand OLM not wanting to do more Berserk because of their reputation as a kids show producer, but I think moving it to White Fox would make more sense since they came from OLM and have worked on projects together before. I don't think Madhouse and OLM have ever collaborated on a project.
I'm into Bones' than Madhouse, it cool but I usually prefer Bones for production on shows
+LMG Blurr Those cunts fuck up every single adaptation they do.
+LMG Blurr I'm with you on this one, those two studios seem to have the most consistently good quality anime that can be good for my tastes. Any other studio is a much bigger hit or miss for me. Maybe Mappa will join them too after a few more seasons. Also although usually out of my tastes, i can also consider as such Kyoto Animation one such consistently good animation studio, they can please their fans on most of their creations.
+mr skeletal Really? they fucked up Full Metal Alchemist, Soul Eater and Darker than Black?
+blinKX10 First of all, Bones redid FMA, but also even if the first FMA had a filler end. It was at let's good( well in my opinion) Same for Soul Eater, I also read both the manga so don't think I'm some anime only. As for Darker Than Black, it had a decent run( sadly I haven't gotten to the manga), but there's one other thing, THEY END IT. So the anime didn't end the manga way. At least its not some messed up cliffhanger at the end and have to what 2-3 Years for a bloody sequel( in which 75% on anime's never do) and that includes Madhouse. For bones they take what they can get from what they have made AT LEAST an end that satisfy the watcher. Also what about the other anime they didn't "fuck up"
LMG Blurr Come on guys, this guy (mr skeletal) obviously has no idea what a bad adaptation means or he's just another "the original is better" elitist who just tries to show off how he has read the original material or something.
I knew there was something different with the studio, it just felt different. So thank you for informing me about the situation. However I do not think that Madhouse can ever be "RESTORED" but rather "REBORN" to something great! "Restoration" would mean that the studio would be have the same members as in the past at the same quality. Although I would be happy as a fan, that is unlikely to happen. Instead I would think of it as a "rebirth," as chance to become new, fresh, and a chance to give some of the underdog animators/directors the limelight. I agree that the current Madhouse, as a production studio, is a "shadow of its former self," but with their new staff I believe that they can take the name one step further. They are currently in their "baby" phase learning how to walk again and they have big shoes to fill, due to their past history. But that idea pushes the new team to make something better, to make something different, something original, something AMAZING! Although its their experimenting phase, so there will be a lot of hit or misses. I believe that not only will they be able to restore their former name, they will be able to push beyond that and take the standard higher!
And if I'm wrong... well then... Bite me right in the Ass!
Who’s here after Frieren
Madhouses studio Redline movie is the greatest animation flex of all time they make an statement forever
I still think Wit Studio is one of the best. AOT3 was a masterpiece.

Yeah
Nah
Bouya madhouse died. I can name a couple studios that are better
@Bouya vinland saga says hi.
@Bouya "kiddo" Compared to madhouse but still proceeds to give Better animation than what madhouse can, fuck off fanboy
This studio has gone through a lot. While its subsidary studio MAPPA is getting a lot of recognition this studio isn't or getting less and less profound. I do hope they get back up their standing and continue their old works like hunter x hunter and btoom.
Hey Canipa, can you cover Studio Shaft (or maybe Shinbou in particular) to explain why their shows all have the same general vibe. It would be great to see you compare Monogatari series to Nisekoi or Madoka or anything related. Maybe talk about how Shinbou's arrival at Shaft shifted the studio's focus. Anyway, just giving ideas.
Damn, this video was bloody fantastic Callum. Genuinely fascinating. Great job bro :)
Your videos are very good. You should do studio Shaft, it is one of the rare ones to have a unique artistic style with Ufotable for example, So it might be interesting to cover.
Shaft's directorial department is really interesting. A friend of mine is actually working on a video about them, so I'll link you to that when it's done. He's a lot more knowledgeable about Shaft's inner workings and talents than I am.
The Canipa Effect
Nice, it will be with pleasure.
I look forward to it.
He still working on it?
I want to know about that video too but would rely on you as I don't know who your friend is~
You mean the *Talking Simulator Anime - Ufotable?* Haha, what a trash studio!
I'm interested in a video about Satoshi Kon's student Takayuki Hirao.
he directed the opening of Texhnolyze, the matrix boob scene from HOTD and the final episode of Death Note.
afterwards he moved to Ufotable to work on Kara no Kyoukai's 5th movie and he became a main director in the studio.
+Zayd Gh And then directed that god awful God Eater.
Z4kCNR187 true, tho I think that the biggest issue with God Eater is the script, visually I liked it, Hirao is a pretty good director.
He did a great job with bringing Nasu's writing to live Kara no Kyoukai 5, if they only hired a better scriptwriter for the GE anime....
Tho his worst work is Gyo, it was creepy and disturbing thanks to him but the flow of the story and the character interactions were just horrible.

Heavily researched videos and it shows. Damn, if all anime review channels did their research, i wouldnt mind watching 10 min or even hour long videos.
Fantastic run down, really appreciate the amount of effort you put into this.
Thanks Canipa, what a wonderful video. It has made me appreciate the anime industry more, and perhaps the same for many others.
Really fun vidya! Really enjoy these informative retrospectives on studios.
Cant wait for your next video in August about Sonnyboy and the creative renaissance of Madhouse taking up subtly the vision with which Maruyama founded the studio.
Agree. Sonny boy is a creative work, it's weird and hard to understand but it really encapsulates the work that Madhouse has done in their prime. With creators just doing what they love. Shingo Natsume directed Sonny Boy btw. Most of the great works by them from the last few years were directed by Shingo Natsume. I honestly think Madhouse should invest with him more.
@@grossular1741 Yeah and at the same time Madhouse have Atsuko Ishizuka, another great director who gave us excelents shows like No game no life, Sorayori and her next movie: Goodbye Donglees! Incredibly extensive analysis. I didn't know of this channel, I'll immediately subscribe. There are so many movies from Madhouse I saw during the years (I'm quietly approaching my 39th year, and, being from Italy, one of the first country ever to import anime, I had access to it since basically I was born, therefore I'm an old OLD anime fan), yet there were still many facts I didn't know.
Thanks a lot.

great research! subscribed!
Aside from the fact that there are a lot of things wrong with this video, not mentioning Maruyama's real reason for leaving Madhouse is insulting. Maruyama left the studio because they went bankrupt and Nippon TV bought Madhouse, replacing Maruyama as president.
Saying that OPM is not a Madhouse production also presents an impressive level of misinformation, especially since people watch the video and then repeat things. It turns out that Madhouse has an in-house animation producer named Yuuichirou Fukushi, who is probably the most well-connected animation producer in the industry today and he's the main reason for seeing all that big staff gathering at OPM. It was not Shingo Natsume, who was actually called upon by Fukushi to direct the series. The same applies to the character designer/chief AD Chikashi Kubota, the 4 main action animators (Yoshimichi Kameda, Se-Jun Kim, Norifumi Kugai and Gousei Oda), even Yutaka Nakamura participated only because Fukushi convinced him.
If we talk about the internal staff of the studio and leaving aside their extensive involvement in each level of production, someone remarkable is undoubtedly Yoshiaki Kawajiri, who saved the production from collapse by taking charge of storyboarding 4 episodes. There's also Madhouse's sub-studio, Madbox, which allowed animators to get involved in the post-production process of their sequences.
Great Video!
great video as always,
i learned many things :)
I love these kind of videos and i would love if you would do a video about the history of anime, how it started and where it is right now and talk about the big shows, studios, and people that made it possible while giving your opinion on certain things, that would be amazing.

I don't see what you were worrying about on Twitter, you only state facts, if people get mad, they're essentially burying their heads in the sand and ignoring the world around them.
+Honest Iago This comment doesn't really make sense. The point is to utilize and interpret facts to make an argument. Saying "you only state facts" is a backhanded compliment since that essentially implies that there is no argument present (which could provoke reactions. And there obviously is an argument here).
Jump forward two years and they've got the best two anime airing this season.
This was really interesting. Especially the history part. I didn't expect that a lot of the main animators for a lot of my favorite series actually had similar roots.

You no your shit! RUclips recommendations actually work sometimes. Subbed fast af
AMAZING video considering the amount of research you had to do for this. I'd love to see you do a quick deconstruct of anime tropes, like where they started, where they peaked in popularity / usage, and (if necessary) what it means in terms of Japanese culture or anime culture (example: running w/ toast in your mouth while you're late for school.... or the ever-present nosebleeds when seeing a hot person or sexy scene).
When you realize Madhouse created all those big masterpieces
