Thank you so much for this!!! This video absolutely saved me tonight when my key fob battery died while I was out late night grocery shopping & stuck locked out of my car in a sketchy parking lot, had no screw driver or any tools, and had to figure out how to change the battery super fast in the dark while the car alarm kept going off. Because of your video I was able to figure out how to open the key fob and change the battery easily and quickly, and get out of an unsafe situation smoothly. Thank you for your service to humanity 🙏
This is one of those wonderful, succinct videos that takes a “How the hell am I going to fix this?” moment and turns it into “Oh, that’s how its done! ”. I honestly thought I would have to go to the dealership to get this resolved. Thank you!!!
Same here! Official Subaru video was worthless -pretty girl with 2" nails being filmed from 5 feet away. I thought she was saying to put the key into the storage slot to pry off the back. She then says "You can get a CR2032 battery from your Subaru dealer or from Amazon online." I think they are a little easier (and cheaper) to find than that - like anywhere that sells batteries.
So glad I found this video! My fob fell completely apart when I was following instructions to replace the battery in another video, but after watching this one I was able to fumble my way into putting it back together. It took only a minute to replace the battery in the second fob.
Just got a "the key battery is low" (or something to that effect) message today on my 2017 crosstrek. Glad your video confirmed that it is an easy replacement. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the instructional video. Good explanation, well filmed. I changed the batteries in two keys this morning and I feel like I accomplished something! Cheers!
Thanks so much! It would have taken me much longer without the detailed closeups and tricks. But now I could solve the problem within minutes because I also happened to have an extra battery hanging around.
Thank you! I was stuck in Home Depot parking lot just now when it my key fob finally died. Saw your video, ran in and got the battery, changed it in the car, set off the alarm a few times but it’s done and it works!
OK Just gotta say that i thought my remote was gone, changed the battery but the screw came out and fell on the floor. wifey found it the video helped me reassemble the remote. You just saved me $300 for a new remote and programming. Thank you soooooo much
Just wanted to say thanks man! such a helpful video! I'm a single mom with minimum knowledge about cars and engines and videos like this saves me every time I have some issue with my car!
Thank you so much! You saved me time and unnecessary spend of money at the dealer. Just one thing for people who try to remove the battery with nails - remove it with a small flat screwdriver instead of nails, it's much easier and faster. It took me literally 2 minutes for both of my keys. If you don't want to wait for delivery, the batteries are sold in most big chain stores, I got mine from Walgreens.
Instead of a screwdriver which damages the plastic, use a spudger or a guitar pick (we use for taking Laptops apart}. Then there is no damage to the plastic on the key. Believe me it works and you will never know it has been taken apart.
Thank you so much for showing the little spring and where it goes. I was putting everything back together after replacing the battery and found a little spring right by the case. It had popped out without me noticing. Thanks to this video I was able to put it back where it belonged. I really appreciate you pointing that out!
Thanks, you make it look so easy. I had to stop your video just once. It's wonderful people like yourself, that help us out. Thanks RUclips for helping us all out.Wish you nothing but the best Bruceyyyy
My fob started messing up today. Watched this video and the time was fast to do it. It would have taken less time but hubby went to go get the battery from his office. I had the fob taken apart and was just waiting on him! Thanks!
Hey thanks very much Bruce, The Subaru owners manual doesn't describe or display what to exactly look for without braking the case of the FOB. But when you clearly displayed how you were to take apart the case it all fell into place or I should say that it fell out of place. Thank you so very much in taking the time to show what the Subaru folks should have. Thanks again
Battery got very iffy yesterday, found your video this morning. Using my backup key until I buy a battery later today, but have the dead one apart and ready to pop in the new battery. Thank you!
Thank you! I have the 2nd style and was worried I had to go to the dealership for replacement. Now I just need to buy a battery. Phew, life just got a lot less stressful.
Thank you for the clear instructions! Additional tip: on my 2011 key, I had to first use a tiny Phillips head screwdriver to remove a screw on the back of the key before I could pry open the key shell.
Omg thank you!! The charge for the dealership doing this was insane! I have the first fob and my guess was in the right location but I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Life saver!
The dealership will charge an arm and a leg for this type of job. If one of your headlights go out, they are straightforward to replace without tools. My girlfriend drives a 2014 Forester that had a light go out and it was easy to replace. I upgraded the headlights to LED for her, and she loves the change. Anyway, if that happens, that's something you can do. I was never interested in working on cars until I bought my 2021 Crosstrek.
I appreciate you sharing this video. Had to replace the batteries in both fobs. Watching this was extremely helpful. I found that using a tiny flat head screw driver was the best way to pop the battery out from the 4 tiny black holders
Thanks Bruceyyyyy. Another Aussie here appreciating your video. Gotta love how the manual shows the wrong orientation of the screwdriver to open the first type. I reckon Subaru do a right brisk business replacing entire remotes, rather than just batteries, from people who tried to pry open the case by using the actual key slot, not the vertical slot.
Thank you for this video. I've been getting a low battery on my key fob for months now, and the Subaru dealer has not been helpful at all. I happened to have 2 2032 spare batteries on my house. Just replaced both my key fobs batteries. Thanks again.
Thank you for this. I didn't need to replace a battery but my key fob dropped onto the ground and turned to a million pieces. This video shows where all the parts fit and prevented me from hammering the casing back on. Works like new.
This key fob (the big one) is built like a medieval nightmare. I replaced the battery ok, but I think whoever designed it hates people. Thanks for the video
I waited until both my regular fobs for my 2018 Outback were being reported "Low Access Key Battery" (over a month for the second one) before finally replacing the batteries. While I did need to rewind a couple spots a couple times, I got them both replaced within 10-15 minutes with only the key fobs and the package of batteries ordered from Amazon used. Thank you! I don't know what it'd cost to go to the dealer to get this done, other than an absolute minimum of far more time and gas spent, at a bare minimum. And of course, odds are such a thing aren't done for free, and service work tends to have a minimum charge. It's not like it'd hurt me financially to pay someone to do it, but this is one of those things that doesn't even need tools and generates no mess beyond recycling the lagging battery.
Thank you so much for the this video, the other ones open it up and they didn't show how to get the battery after opening!!! Also the close-up was good.
Daniel Carroll 1 minute ago I recommend using a spudger or a guitar pick (we use for taking Laptops apart}. Then there is no damage to the plastic on the key. Believe me it works and you will never know it has been taken apart. Using anything metal will damage the opening on the key. Just saying.
Thank you, so much for doing this video .I called Subaru and they said I had to come all the into Honolulu and I live on the other side of the island. very helpful Mahalo
Oh yeah! This is the easiest way to do this with these freakin' things. We tried for days. petrified that we'd bust it and have to pay $500 or more for a new one! Thanks.
Mine is a 2015 Subaru Forester. I was able to get the fob open (red/black) only to find my battery was a CR1620. I need to go back to the store, but at least I can change the battery myself. Thanks.
Thank you Mr. Garrison. :-) Thanks. I wanted some confidence that taking tha battery out would not force me to re-pair the fob with the car. I have had to do that with my 2004 Forester. Left-Right, Left-Right, Up-Down, Down-Up....
Amazing how you can try with screwdrivers and stuff and that key won't open, but you touch it with the key once and it instantly falls apart. Thanks, man! ^^

Me, too!

@@trimule Go to your Subaru dealer to buy the battery only if you want to pay twenty bucks instead of two. 😂
I can't even say how thankful I am for this tutorial at 7am in the morning. And I had the batteries at home. WHEW!!!
So glad I found this video! My fob fell completely apart when I was following instructions to replace the battery in another video, but after watching this one I was able to fumble my way into putting it back together. It took only a minute to replace the battery in the second fob.

Literally just had it pop up on my 2017 wrx.
Thanks for the instructional video. Good explanation, well filmed. I changed the batteries in two keys this morning and I feel like I accomplished something! Cheers!
Congrats! I'm glad it helped.

Bought a Forester yesterday and she warned me today that my fob battery was low. This was exactly what I needed. Thank you!

Battery just died a few weeks ago. Tutorial for 2nd style FOB at 3:20 helped me 100%. Today will go out and buy a CR1620 battery to put in it.
My fob started messing up today. Watched this video and the time was fast to do it. It would have taken less time but hubby went to go get the battery from his office. I had the fob taken apart and was just waiting on him! Thanks!
Thank you! Even my Subaru dealer here in Stockholm/Sweden didnt know about the trick to open the FOB-top with the key! Very good to know this trick!
My key battery just died, thank you for this video!! You just saved me so much money, thinking I needed to buy a brand new key.

They make these way harder to open then they need to... thanks for posting this man, super helpful.

Oh man they show the incorrect procedure on their own manual? Thanks for the laugh!
Thanks. Worked exactly as demonstrated, right down to the silver bottom slipping it’s halter. Appreciate this.
Thank you for this video. I've been getting a low battery on my key fob for months now, and the Subaru dealer has not been helpful at all. I happened to have 2 2032 spare batteries on my house. Just replaced both my key fobs batteries. Thanks again.
Taking the battery out of the case was by far the most difficult aspect to this. The rest was a piece of cake. Great video. It helped a lot.
Thank you so much! Now I can change my own fob battery instead of having to ask for someone else to do it!!! Success!!!
Thanks for the video
this is the most useful fucking thing at 3am, i appreciate it beyond what i can describe thank you
Good tip on separating the fob to access battery. I had some issues until this video explained it
Thank you so much. ❤❤ I'm the one who did lose the spring😅😅 found it got it all back together. Worse two minutes of my day!
Thank you! Anyone else set off their panic button like 5 times doing it? 😅
Yes!
I did! Lol at least I knew it worked!
Yes. It went off at least five times.
Yes! 🤣

The hardest part about this was taking the new battery out of the store packaging! Thanks.
Yes. The battery I bought had a plastic bubble in front and back so you couldn't just cut through the cardboard on the back. Arrrgh!
So true
Perfect explanation and demonstration. Thank you!
My real problem in this process was getting the battery out of the Duracell packaging!
Thank you. That did the trick. The instructions in the owners manual for my Subaru showed the wrong slot to pry open the lid.
Thank you so much for the this video, the other ones open it up and they didn't show how to get the battery after opening!!! Also the close-up was good.
I am so proud of myself! I did this thanks to this U-tube video. Thanks so much.
Thanks.. thought I'd have to go find a magic lamp and use one of my wishes to open this thing up.. 😂
1 millions thanks ! The Subaru owner manual is certainly not clear about this.
Thank you for including which battery is needed.....
Thank you for this video! Saved me the headache of dealing with my dealership.
Worked perfectly for me. Thanks for posting!
I don’t any about anyone else, but This video helped me .
Excellent video - exactly what I needed! Thank you! Cheers from San Diego!
Thank youuuu I really needed this. I’ve literally just been. It driving anywhere because mine totally died and I didn’t know what to do 😂
This was so helpful! I thought this would be so hard but besides coaxing the battery out I had no troubles at all!
You saved a trip to service center and money , thank you
Thanks, man. Helped me do this in under 30 seconds. Appreciate you!
Thanks so much !!! Just did mine for our Forester. Worked perfectly.

Thanks! Had it all figured out except for prying the battery out. Felt like I was going to break the housing until I saw you do it.
Thanks Bruceyyyyy - from Australia.
I’m guessing you’ve just helped me save $50 + from the Dealer.
Ya... I was expecting $150 dealer charge.
Thanks for including the bit where the button fell off and you reinserted it. Happened to me, and video showed me how to put it back.
I'm glad it could help!
Short, to the point, close up so you can what happened, thanks!
Watched several times but I did it! Tried on the car and it worked first time. Thanks for the video
Thank you! My car has been telling me for like 6 months to change the battery!
I swapped my batteries thanks to this vid!
Almost 10K subscribers, and he never self-promotes. This makes Brucey the Subie man, mmm-kay? 😁
Thank you can’t wait to try this out

I echo all the comments, this was so helpful! Thank you!

Thanks so much for posting this. I had no idea where to start.
Very helpful, thanks! You saved me a trip to the dealership.
Mine is a 2015 Subaru Forester. I was able to get the fob open (red/black) only to find my battery was a CR1620. I need to go back to the store, but at least I can change the battery myself. Thanks.
By golly thanks for the help. 3:50 I'd never have thought to pry those tabs open. Considered it as one unit.
So useful ! Your video was a lifesaver!
Greets from 🇨🇱
Perfect video, I waited until after a cold bike ride, I couldn't unlock the car :-(
Thank so much for such direct and to the point information! Happy Holidays to you and your family ✨
Thank you Mr. Garrison. :-)
Thanks. I wanted some confidence that taking tha battery out would not force me to re-pair the fob with the car. I have had to do that with my 2004 Forester.
Left-Right, Left-Right, Up-Down, Down-Up....
30 lives unlocked.
Good video. Thanks man. The batteries are $10 each but luckily CVS had buy one get one half price this week.
Thanks! Worked great for me. I appreciate you posting this video.
Thank you! You just saved me a hell of a lot of money! Great tutorial.
Thank you. Yes that spring is vital so don"t lose it.
Thanks for sharing this! I was able to replace the battery without breaking anything!
Nice video, I made a similar one and then realized that this one exists!
Thank you!! I could not have done this without help.
Thanks for this dude! Worked perfectly!!!
Thanks so much! You explained this perfectly ~ changed both of my key fob batteries in no time. 🙂
Thank you for doing this - I would never have figured it out.
Thank you so much. This was VERY HELPFUL!
Excellent vid. I said mmmmkkkaaaaay just before you so that was a moment
Boom. You rock!
Amazing how you can try with screwdrivers and stuff and that key won't open, but you touch it with the key once and it instantly falls apart. Thanks, man! ^^
