I hope you're doing well, Adam. I am young (23) and I have missed many opportunities to learn from people who were skilled at many things. I may always live with a sense of regret because I missed those opportunities and these people have passed away, time is not our friend I have learned. I have always wanted to work on everything but I struggle with communication and social cues to the point of pushing people away without that being my intent. I am going to do as much as I can squeeze in until I can't anymore but I don't think I have enough lifetimes to live all the lives that I want to. You, Adam Savage, are the type of person that my brain absolutely resonates with and somebody that I consider very special in this world. I am trying to form my thoughts and I keep crying during this message but I hope this reaches you well. - Jonah Yates
As an FEA engineer my work is mostly on a desk in front of a computer. I always thought that my frustration of "a 1 pm meeting ruining my day" is just my poor time management. Now I feel a relief...having heard that explanation. It is not only me, but apparently all creative people. Thank you!
"wait state" is a thing. Meetings anywhere but at the beginning of the day create these wait states. But at the same time: too many meetings at the start of the day will just burn you out before you start. The best thing is the minimal amount of meetings at the start of every other day or something.
On the dichotomy between managers and makers, we often say in the dev world (or I’ve often heard said) that managers chunk their time by the the half hour, and engineers/makers by the half day, so a meeting at 10:30 might make sense for a manager but completely mess up the efficiency of a maker. I live by this. Also, the higher the manager, the smaller the chunk, multinational ceo’s will chunk their time almost by the minute.
YES to the "Got me through Covid" crowd... Adam, you kept me sane...kept me grounded...kept me focused on what matters. ...it sounds extreme, but literally; you helped (in a really, really big way) to keep me alive during that horrible time. Thank you, and keep on doing what you do so well!
I went to Star Wars Celebration years ago in Tokyo. I *HATE* lines. There was a big line to get in, but once I was in, I avoided lines the entire time. I can't abide by them - I've met people here in Japan that actually enjoy waiting in line. Blows my mind. I just can't. I don't think you need to skip cons because of lines. I haven't been to SDCC, though, so maybe SW Celebration is set up differently. I also got through Tokyo Game Show without lines (other than to get in). You just have to give up whatever goodness is buried beneath the line (Meet/greets, con-specific item(s) being sold, etc.). If you can be content with wandering and looking and enjoying the atmosphere without some of the specific goodies, you should be fine.
Mid day meetings are the worst. A 1 hour meeting ends up wasting at least 2 or 3 hours for me where I can't start on anything else or risk being interrupted in a bad spot.
I had to share this video with my wife, specifically the portion about adjusting to your free time after Mythbusters because she struggles so much with the same thing. She is an artist with ADHD and she has a really hard time with feeling productive. Despite spending most of her day at the computer either drawing for work or drawing in her free time she still complains that she just doesn't have enough time. If she's not being productive and drawing she feels like she is wasting precious time. It can be such a struggle not only for her but also for me since it obviously makes me feel like I'm not a "productive" use of her time.
Meeting Adam at Fanexpo Dallas was amazing. Getting to have a short talk and talking over our Obsessions with crafting (and weathering) was fun. Got to share some things i build as well. And then i got to take a picture with im Cosplaying Chewi. One of the best Memoires and worth the travel from germany Ty
YES! This is great advice!! The SDCC vibe is it's own specific thing, and I would hate to see a 'con-newbie' try to do SDCC as their first con, it's like trying to start running for fun and just signing up for the Boston Marathon. It (and the other ginormous cons) are worth it, but it's likely that someone is going to need to work up to that level of nerdery... I have a lot of nerdy friends who have SDCC on their bucket lists, but I wouldn't want them to have a bad experience, as you do need to figure out something as huge as SDCC. I grew up in San Diego, and went to the con as a teenager, then went back a few years later with a Pro badge (as I was working for a company that did scanning and color separations for various comic companies (that totally dated me), and even helped a friend who shared a booth with Billy West for a couple of years. You need to figure out what YOU want from something like an SDCC before you even go, as if you just show up with a ticket, it just might not work out so well.
I thought that was a replica of the Wright Flyer in the background a few videos ago! I would love to see a video about that now that I see it much clearer in the background!
I totally agree, there's nothing worse than not having enough time for a project to consume me, which has been a massive reason why I haven't started many projects.
I can definitely speak about the "scale" of comic cons. My first con was C2E2 in Chicago, and it was so big that my jaw truly dropped. Nowdays I got to many Cons both big and small, and each have their own charm and wonders.
OH MY GOD - that whole idea of a 1pm meeting ruining my day made me so seen. If I know there's something coming up in the day, I feel like my whole day revolves around that moment and I don't want to start something and get in a flow only to have it interrupted.
I got to go to a local con that came to my university, and there were some celebs that showed up, there were some people in costume, but the main attraction was the cool stuff you could buy! Covering the full gambit of nerdom from Harry Potter to Star Trek, you could buy a whole lot of cool yet nerdy things from there. I highly recommend starting there
The waiting Line is the community space number one. I Work for Berlinale (Berlin Film Festival) and before Covid hit the majority of tickets were only available in Person so if you wanted ticket you had to queue hours before the Ticket Counter open and hours after it. And than we had to switch to online Ticket, what is certainly more convenient than queuing in the cold February nights outside, but we lost that community space and these areas that were vibeing with excitement, and hot film tips before are more or less dead now. Luckily we still have too queue in front of the cinema in order to get a good seat, and this comes from someone who normally hates waiting in line.
Have totaly been there. I crashed out of school from illness and felt nothing for life and consequently had little motivation. Also suffered a lack of investment from patents which didn't help. I just took steps of discovery and tried to feel, experience and gleen something from life at art college. I have a degree in fine art but i have no studio so I work in a multistotey car park now issuing concessions. Not where I want to be but I can still gleen something other than money from the job as Im helping people there. In other words I think you just try to get sonething out of life which creates motivation.
Great video, Adam! I find it funny how it is referred to as "Hook & Loop" yet you ordered your drawers "Loop" then "Hook" I need to know, was that intentional or not? lol My OCD wants to reach through the screen and fix them!
Hi there Adam, I just got finished watching the episode of the Star Wars Speeder Bike Reimagined with you and Dave Fogler and thought you did an excellent job together with the model and I was really intrigued by the little green vacuformer you used and I'm interested in getting one for myself because it looks to be quite handy and useful. Is there any information you can give me about it?
To quote the Beatles, “Oh that magic feeling.. nowhere to go.” How I love being retired.. no wake up alarms, no spending my time to help someone else, no meetings or anything on calendars. I highly recommend it to everyone.
Has there ever been any videos of the corporate structure of Tested and everybody involved? I know some might be stuff wanted to keep private. As somebody who loves seeing background stuff, it'd be super interesting to me to see how that all plays together. Is Adam's shop his personally or is it owned by a company of his? Is that company what actually owns Tested or does Adam own it personally? Is the Tested ownership a partnership? Are all 6 people employees/owner operators, contractors (with or without their own corps)? Adam mentioned doing some work in the shop that helps bring in money for Tested (at least I think that's what he was saying about the Bethesda job). Does that mean Tested got the contract but hired Adam or Adam's contracting company to do the work? Did Adam do that work as Tested's owner and Tested paid Adam's contracting company or shop owning company to use the space? That could be an interesting video series done once a quarter or a couple times a year where Tested interviews other makers about how things are structured.
TV hosts often have a built-in platform that can be advantageous when transitioning to a leadership role. They can leverage their fame and audience to promote products, services, or initiatives in a more direct and impactful way.
The difference between maker and manager: the tough part for me is that I want both. The manager in me wants to clear the field so that the maker in me can do his thing unencumbered.
My ideal of scaling is in place of growing one unit forever larger to instead set aside funds enough to replicate. Not too strictly. Just to be a model of infrastructure, workflow, and productivity and to offer up that model and funding to similarly minded creatives. Then for the 2 to fund the 3rd and so on. All independently ran within some structural restraints, namely the pay it forward model.
hi Adam , just a question , have you seen the latest work by Nord Force , they made large books for a author that they liked , it was quite interesting and the result was really impressive ,as well as her last project of a tuft carpet super huge, Always enjoy your video's and the many projects that you do as well the interviews of other makers ,
Regarding your anti-capitalist tendencies and the desire not to scale from a small tight-knit team: have you ever considered transitioning Tested to a worker-owned co-op model? Feels like it would be a good fit for the type and scale of creative endeavor you've got going on.
My career was working as a civil service civilian for the Army. While it was mostly deskwork, I was constantly busy. Shortly after 9/11, I had a boss who was a LTC and who demanded that everybody be in his office at the start of an announced meeting. One time, early in his tenure, I was about a minute late, because I worked in a SCIF and had to secure my workspace, leave the SCIF, climb 2 stories of stairs, and walk a couple of hundred feet down the hall to get to his office. He literally stopped the meeting mid-sentence and refused to continue until I left the room. I am sure that he meant it as punishment, but I loved it. I went back to my space and kept working. From that point on, if I wasn't deeply involved with the subject matter of a meeting, I would just blow it off. If asked about it, I would explain that time got away from me, and since I was going to be late anyway, I didn't bother. I had better things to do with my time than absorb 5 minutes worth of information crammed into an hour-long meeting. The times when I was the boss, I tried to keep that kind of nonsense in mind when calling and hosting meetings of more than 2 people.
So mental note, DON'T, do shop change videos which you release before the pieces of your podcast...which was originally recorded BEFORE you did said shop change. IE. A few days ago we all saw a video where you modified your Hooks and Loops, and now magic clearly has restored it to it's original state :p
Empathy Kindness Respect I hope more than a T shirt bumper sticker.......Then again if you need a shirt to remind then you should make it into a habit so you don't need reminded
Its odd to me to see the views of SHORTS go up and regular video views going down. Most of the time its to be expected if you long form is well just filling time. Where shorts come in is for little burst of small i wanna say giggles but more accurate is those who just scroll. Looking for something good to watch. Its why I am going back to creative film. Its where I am skilled at anyway and is where most want me at anyway
Copious ammounts of fermented top-shelf intoxicants got me "through Covid'. But I ain't goin roun spouting it online forever labeling me as needing external props to function. Hey wait a sec..............oh $&[|!
nah, that would mean adam would be smack in the middle of dealing with the evils of the world and that is not his skill set. He is where he is best now 😁
6:28, Yes youtube is unreliable for creators and extortionate against their customers, Ive quit my premium Account and im deleting youtube off my devices these days because of it. So I need a new way of watching your stuff.
Gosh paying to be on some tier whose meaning is well beyond my comprehension at my freeloading access level just has to have it applied thicker...........right? Do you know the substance whose application thickness is mentioned here is? Kinda hoping not. Let me say it like this; being successful in hollyweird doesn't come with Ghandi-level legitimacy...it comes with the privadlege of saying yah ok I made some stackable income but the mechanics of it all only impresses those with that sole repuirement. but what I can is: I'm truly proud that my baby only eats Gerber Gold for only future world leaders! Do you grok this at some level? If so then you're obligated to commect below by clicking on that very word dutifully labeling a screen element unabashidly encoded to resemble a light blue suppository. I mean I'd really love to know wtf I'm spewing on about. Thanks Adam you rock-well you don't actually rock but I mean the way the people who say that mean it. Guess I just won't afford that level of true devotion.
Just because I don’t look like I’m doing something, doesn’t mean I’m not doing something in my head 😉 Sitting and thinking time can be productive so find a nice spot to enjoy the view while you don’t seem to do much.
Ironically, you are just as likely to waste large portions of your life by thinking this way as the ppl who are the opposite of that This is the easiest way to convince yourself that you're "doing alot" when actually you're not. Very often, slower is faster in life But obviously you can't be on either end of that spectrum. Can't be living on your couch either
@@Wes-xk6hl I guess it depends how your brain works, sitting quietly with no distractions working through stuff can save a lot of time and money wasted getting stuff that won’t work. Narrowing it down to a couple of solutions with a view that relaxes you is time well spent to me.
@PaulRhB yea that's a good example of slowing things down. Instead of just doing something, vetting it out and thinking about it, prioritizing, etc. All I was saying is that both ends of that spectrum are equally destructive. I only felt the need to say anything cause I see it every day at work. Ppl working so hard and getting nothing done
Adam’s compulsive need to pronounce words using his own pronunciation is typically fine but dude you don’t get to redefine how other real people’s names are pronounced. You can say Han Solo wrong cause you think you’re better than every other fan but Keanu reeves is a real person with a real name lol. It’s not some Jif Gif debate. Take a chill pill and say words like normal people cause you’re normal too.
If you have to do a “no meeting” day, every week, your the issue. your not really doing your Job right. Hire better. Yes. A meeting every week or so and then do quarterly meetings. Maybe an extra at eoy meeting. You shouldn’t ever take time away from the real makers within you needs by meetings. Hire right and work to the concept. There’s many ways to work around but really, you prob if you really have to do no meeting day overall. However if x company comes to me with a project, I would call a meeting on a day of call, once ended.
anticapitalist? i respect you opionion but hard disagree, still havent seen anyone describe a better system. as they say its the less worse system. i think working to balance it so we have freedoms and order is the best way. communist or socialism works in very small groups. when you scale up the power dynamics will always collapse with everyone working "together" sacrificing for the party while those in charge enrich themselves and corruption spreads. look at china. i know communism personally, im fully better dead than red...its not a saying to me. im not going to dox myself but if you spoke with me you would understand why i may not be pro-capitalist but socialist or the others scare the hell out of me. explain what your pro and why its better instead of anti
Whether it be socialism, communism or capitalism, none are immune from those in charge engaging in self-enrichment and corruption. That corruption is not fundamental to the ideology but to the flaws in character of those in charge and apply it.
A mixed system seems like the best one to me. Social supports while attempting to maintain a healthy economy. A system with social safety nets doesnt exist (even I'm America) but people keep on being told that socialism (in a light form) is the root if all evil. It is not. You can have a system in place that both supports and pushes people. It's just a matter of balance. People need to understand that and not believe to by politicians with ulterior motives or big businesses only looking out for their bottom line.

Cant say i ever had tons of intetest in cons, but the whole thing about waiting in line kinda put the idea to ever go to one in the grave for me
Same, sounds awful
I went to Star Wars Celebration years ago in Tokyo. I *HATE* lines. There was a big line to get in, but once I was in, I avoided lines the entire time. A difference between maker and owner/manager is working *at* the business vs working *on* the business.

My now husband and I went to Sili-Con in 2022 and had a fantastic time. We look forward to a day when it or something similar comes back.

That article is awesome!!
I think Adam and Mike Rowe should just interview each other once a week until the end of time

Great video sir 😊
Glad I never made it to a CON, waiting in line never was my thing,, doubly so for the bathroom.
Surely any event that is popular will have a wait/queue time.....right?
Casually creating everyday without concern with time, it is the dream.
thanks
i'i've gone to SDCC for many years and everything he said is true
What a lovely caveside chat

Here I thought it was the reason why Adam likes bullwhips. ;)
Adam for President. Well it 'worked' for that other guy…
nah, that would mean adam would be smack in the middle of dealing with the evils of the world and that is not his skill set. He is where he is best now 😁
2nd shifters have all day to worry about having enough time to do anything. Or they stay up all night.

6:28, Yes youtube is unreliable for creators and extortionate against their customers, Ive quit my premium Account and im deleting youtube off my devices these days because of it. So I need a new way of watching your stuff.
I hope that goes for every other social media platform as well, as they are MUCH worse than YT!
Third
We’ll call you first since the first two were spam. 😆
I am very much in the mindset of if I am not doing something, I am wasting my life.
Once I made this mental transition it made it impossible to interact with most people. The vast majority of people piddle away their life.
Just because I don’t look like I’m doing something, doesn’t mean I’m not doing something in my head 😉 Sitting and thinking time can be productive so find a nice spot to enjoy the view while you don’t seem to do much.
Ironically, you are just as likely to waste large portions of your life by thinking this way as the ppl who are the opposite of that
This is the easiest way to convince yourself that you're "doing alot" when actually you're not. Very often, slower is faster in life
But obviously you can't be on either end of that spectrum.
No! Please don't go back to the "sick of..." outro 😣
I’m a fan… but “we keep in touch, but light touch”… is possible the lamest thing you have ever said.. at the top of a long list.
An anticapitalist capitalist. Hilarious.
Weird and concerning that Adam is slurring his speech.
Take care broh.
Take care of your health, you're a national treasure
Covid is still ongoing not past tense fwiw
anticapitalist? i respect you opionion but hard disagree, still havent seen anyone describe a better system. as they say its the less worse system. i think working to balance it so we have freedoms and order is the best way. communist or socialism works in very small groups. when you scale up the power dynamics will always collapse with everyone working "together" sacrificing for the party while those in charge enrich themselves and corruption spreads. look at china.
i know communism personally, im fully better dead than red...its not a saying to me. im not going to dox myself but if you spoke with me you would understand why i may not be pro-capitalist but socialist or the others scare the hell out of me. explain what your pro and why its better instead of anti
