Love it. Maybe some to consider is the very first contact in TNG where they say if they resist they will be punished. Kinda unique. And maybe the First Contact when they’re listening to the federation engage the Borg. That one sounds kinda unique too with the crisp audio and kinda echo and music.

Man, that just goes to show how quickly the Dominion, with all of their allies, would lose to the Borg, if they chose to initiate a full scale invasion of the Gamma Quadrant.
The Dominion's biggest weakness was their hubris, which is why Wolf 359 was such a disaster. Now, imagine that battle, but scaled up for the entire Gamma Quadrant. Entire Star Systems are assimilated, Dominion warships, Distinctiveness, knowledge, experience and combat prowess are assimilated into the collective.

Their structure came from a collective consciousness functioning as a single being. They could have done so much more and far cooler things with them than what they did.

Even with the queen, the thought of giving up your individuality to her collective is still terrifying. The only reason the borg were so much more terrifying at the beginning was they were an extremely powerful unknown. The thing with unknowns is, once we start studying and understanding them they typically turn out to be at least a little less scary. Also we have seen that even with the destruction of the queens body she still "lives" as she is not a physical being but a living machine/program in a sense, and uses another similar looking female drone as her avatar.

I love how utterly clinical the Borg sound, especially in "The Best of Both Worlds." They're not posturing; they're not threatening; to do either of those things would be to imply that they care what you think; they do not. They're just telling you how things are going to be, and advising you not to waste too many future drones trying to resist them. And, more than that, on the few occasions when you can actually manage to talk to them face to "face," it's clear that there's no malice behind it. Indeed, they honestly think that they're doing what's best for you, and you're just too ignorant to understand until you've been added to the hivemind.

They were bland with few colours, unlike the later primarily green--but also blue colour scheme. Their ship was also just a large cube of metal shit stuck together with no apparent rhyme or reason, yet it was highly threatening. However, in doing so, it lost the subtlety. Also, the introduction of the Queen and hierarchy created it's own problem. The notion that they see us as "archaic authority driven" cultures is a far more terrifying thing. They would have no leader. There was no one of them you could talk with. All you could do was destroy them.

The Borg in the original TNG conception were totally chilling. It was great that they were used so sparingly in that series - they're the kind of villain that shouldn't show up unless the writers really have something good up their sleeves.
Voyager gets a lot of flak for watering them down, which I tend to agree with. Can't say I was really a fan of Species 8472 as a creative contribution to the lore - I was much more of a fan of the Vidiians, which were much more complex and had a unique potential for visceral horror in Trek. But as far as the Borg go, I do love that one scene where the liberated Borg heal Chakotay, with their voices gradually merging into that of the Collective. It was actually really, really creepy, and it would have been even better if they had taken that into a much darker direction.

Credit where credit is due for the First Contact voice for making the Borg sound more robotic,
But hands down I think the Best version of the Borg voice goes to their 2nd appearance in "Best of both Worlds" where they sound more like millions of voices speaking as one, feels like there is way more menace in their voice.
Their first voice in QWho is ok, just felt like it could do with abit more work to bring its potential out and I think they did that with the 2nd voice!
Actually voyager's is pretty close, it has a nice echo effect on it, feels like a close 2nd they settled on hence forth. It's still pretty good , more laid back like an ancient God that knows how Powerful it is so it doesn't need to put emphasis on its words, just makes statement of what it's gonna do to you.

I love the almost-nerdy-voice borg from TNG, but I also love the vaguely-text-to-speech voice from early voyager (hope and fear is a good example)
The others kinda just sound generic

They're real. Along with species 8472. These events just won't happen until the 24th century.

5:24 With the way these scenes fit together, I like to imagine that Janway falls from that precarious gangway into "Grid 9-2 of subjunction 12" as the borg put it, with her hitting the ground as they say that, like a satnav recalibrating.

That was one of Janeway's biggest tactical mistakes. As Sunzi said: The enemy of my enemy is my friend. Sunzi was right, Janeway should have worked with Species 8472. What are they actually learning in tactics at the Starfleet Academy? I'm not a brilliant strategist now, but if you've read The Art of War by Sunzi you should have some basic knowledge of warfare, as well as the game of chess.

To be fair, Species 8472 were practically an unknown quantity, they weren't the ones who controlled Borg Space, they had no way to consistently communicate with them and Voyager's resident telepath received a psychic impression that Species 8472 was out to destroy all life in the galaxy, not just the Borg.

Jane way wasn't at war with the Borg, though. It would be foolish to be in her situation. Plus, the Borg likely outnumber them, so once they adapt, which is likely, they're in big trouble. I think she rightly saw the Borg as a better partner and bigger threat. The borg could conquer the universe.

    • @darthplagueis4626
      @darthplagueis4626  3 года назад +7

Doing so requires disabling the enemy's shields and at the time, Starfleet knew very little about Borg technology, so they weren't able to detect anything they would call shields.

As much as I love First Contact. I think Ronald D. Moore and Brannon Braga did a disservice to the Borg in the long run with that movie. The guys at Paramount were the one's forcing them to put the Borg Queen in there. They said "You gotta have a face for these Borg villains in this movie, otherwise they're just zombies!" Imagine if we had Star Trek: Voyager with the Borg with the TNG era costumes and a full on collective hive mind. XD
