    I think it's neat how Data's whole motivation in later seasons became trying to be more human, lamenting that he can't feel human emotions, etcetera. But from the very start of the series he was portraying very human qualities such as making friends with people and getting pissy when someone mispronounces his name

    • @Elly3981
      @Elly3981 Год назад +163

      I think that Data did have emotions all along. He just didn't express them as well as his brother, Lore. If Data truly didn't have emotions, he wouldn't have been able to be intrigued by human behavior, enjoy things, bond with his friends and cat, or get annoyed when people mispronounce his name. Yet Data has shown that he can do all that. He is kind, innocent, and benevolent while Lore is twisted, sadistic, and cruel.

    • @moniquebaldea9299
      @moniquebaldea9299 Год назад +51

      Agreed. I say this to my little boy who is becoming a third generation trekker. Data always had emotions but he thought he didn’t because they weren’t as outwardly obvious as human one’s are. But, he had them all along.

    • @Elly3981
      @Elly3981 Год назад

      @@moniquebaldea9299Well, I think its also because Dr. Soong programmed Data to be much more mellow and reserved than Lore so that he wouldn't lash out at people for treating him differently because he's an android or let negative emotions cloud his better judgment because with his superhuman strength and abilities, it would have been a disaster for everyone around him if Data were to ever lose his temper over anything or panic in a critical situation and screw up. By the time he installed his emotion chip, Data had lived among humans and other organic species long enough to handle his emotions more responsibly than Lore did.

    Ode to Spot
    Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
    An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
    Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
    Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.
    I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
    A singular development of cat communications
    That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
    For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.
    A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
    You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
    And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
    It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.
    O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
    Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
    And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
    I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

      @@Kllgg I wouldn't say that Worf is autistic. He's a Klingon man raised by human parents. Because Klingons have such intense emotions (ironically similar to Romulans), it's quite the handful for humans when they don't have experience with even unruly human children.
      So while it's possible that Worf has autism, it's very unlikely. He just has stunted social skills from a lack of socialization with other Klingons.

    The fact that Data was also able to responsibly and safely care for an animal is also impressive.

Soong probably programmed him like that so he doesn't lash out at people in a fit of temper or let negative emotions cloud his better judgment. I was so sure the final clip was going to be of Data saying goodbye to Lal at the end of "The Offspring" (Season 3, Episode 16). Though I've watched every ST:TNG episode numerous times and there are several that have left a deep emotional imprint on me, That exact moment, of that specific episode, had the greatest impact with me in all things regarding Data.
    Throughout the entire series, There've been numerous times where Data became more.. ..human. You touched on several of those in your video. Some were comedic moments that demonstrated his capacity for levity, sarcasm, and irony, while others hinted at his ability to rationalize the emotional impact of less favorable feelings such as anger, remorse, loss of love or life, etc.. To me, his final moments with Lal were the greatest demonstration of how tragic it was for the character to be bereft of that bridge between his logic and his emotional self awareness.
    Most fans wanted Commander Pinocchio to finally get his wish. Others argue the detriment that emotions introduce to any being, thus feel he was better off without the id/ego/super-ego trifecta. But for those of us whom can feel sympathy and empathy, the final scene with Lal was crushing.

The way he combines his role as the leader, stays clear on the point about what he has to criticize while using it as an opportunity to help Worf grow in his understanding of his new role, then making clear it was not meant personally in any way and therefore keeping their friendly relationship intact. He then realizes that “Julianna" must be an android. I knew that this was the scene in which Data realized the fact, but I had never before noticed Data's facial reaction. Interesteringly, Data’s facial response to those circumstances is itself an approximation. It is derived from a hyothesis of what an emotional humanoid being might do, but it is executed by an emotionless constructed being.
