Intense Severe Thunderstorm in Leander/Cedar Park, TX - 6/4/2018

- After a long period of what seemed like a thunderstorm extinction in Central Texas, the Storm Prediction Center issued a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms in the area, mostly for damaging winds. Towards the evening, a mesoscale convective system began to move in from eastern Texas and headed westward towards the Austin area, reaching the Central Texas area by around 11:00 PM. At around 11:45 PM, the National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for eastern Williamson County for 60 mph wind gusts and nickel-sized hail. Once the complex reached northern Travis County, it began to stall over the metro area due to the presence of multiple boundaries that stopped the system in its tracks, dropping 4+ inches of rain in places such as Pflugerville, TX with the NWS issuing multiple flash flood warnings. Areas such as Pflugerville and Round Rock also lost power for many hours due to the storm system, with wind damage reports scattered all across the Central Texas area. This storm system was also notable for having an astounding amount of cloud-to-ground lightning, which also caused damage and power outages.

One of the best storm videos I have seen. No extreme sudden camera movement and no loud screams. That was one intense storm! Thank you for uploading I thoroughly enjoyed the video.

Wow, now that was one AWESOME storm. That constant, all around lightning was some wild stuff. I love storms.
I was in this storm, living on the East side of Austin. My neighborhood had a 60 mph wind gust that knocked a tree down in my backyard and knocked down power lines a street away. It was insane!

I just had a recent storm up here in Burleson it was the most insane storm I've ever been through, I live about a hundred yards from a tornado warning tower and it when off knowing there was one that touched down just east of my house Fort Worth got hit too. Absolutely scariest shit in my life.
GREAT video, oh how I miss t'storms. We just don't get them here in northern CA near the coast. It's rare, and even then it's just s rumble or two. Nice capture!!!
Man that thing was intense!! Awesome footage! Had me nervous watching it because I don't like severe weather at night, and that lightning was unbelievable!

@@thatstormenthusiast I love these storms, too, because they're often better than some of those 10-hour videos that loop over and over. This is the real thing, and it's the best for sleeping or even just to unravel with after a hard day.

I love Thunderstorms especially at Night my heart just pounds in my throat so fast I've literally been a fan of Thunderstorms & Weather since I was 8 years old I'm now 25 years old & I still really really enjoy them a lot I'd do anything to enjoy an amazing storm I especially love lots and lots of Lightning this marks me 25 years of being a huge storm fan
I love it when these storms come through but it scares my 10 year old daughter. She has been that way since we were in a tornado when she was very little. She flips out if the power goes out during a storm.

Now thats some lightning right there with strong wind gust over 60 mph between23mrk til 24 mark
there were a couple of power flashes, early in the clip, behind the tree line. you could hear the sound of high voltage arcing a second or two after each flash. were the trees branches touching the wires in the wind perhaps? the flashes were green, and too long lived to be lightning.
Indeed, they were definitely power flashes and not lightning; tree branches may have likely been the culprit but I never did find out what truly caused those electric arcs however

Commenting 1/28/20 at 630am EST....Mannn oh mannn-----hold onto your seats and fasten your seatbelts come the 22:00 minute mark when the incredible lightning barrage sets in......THIS is my very kind of such live awesomed Tstorm videos with so much lightning to turn night into day..and one can drive at night without turning those headlights on.....Wish all of such Tstorm videos uploaded were like THIS one...and awesome on your manuscript description of the violent weather from 6/4/18.....The closest of this violent Tstorm I got on RUclips was from 7/28/89....and that was a duzie...video is on my channel too..

The rain started changing directions and by the end of the video, my camera and microphone were soaking wet and I couldn't afford to have them outside any longer and risk them malfunctioning
Yeah this storm was intense, I was during the whole thing. I was watching a movie until a certain lightning strike hit and it turned out power out for a split second, turning the tv off. It was a crazy cell.
It certainly was my good man; definitely one of the most intense we've had here in a while!
What is your favorite severe storm weather app? I'm moving from California to Texas btw
For casual use I recommend Weather Underground and/or WeatherBug (the latter has a really cool lightning detection feature called Spark); for more comprehensive use I highly recommend RadarScope though it does cost $9.99, albeit well worth the money

What direction was the camera facing?
The camera was facing east
Looked like a powerflash at about 0:52. Even heard a zap sound. Also think I spotted a few more after about 10:14, through about 11:30. Definitely heard the sound with those ones. They must have been close. Kinda gave a heads up to what was coming, I guess you could say 😂. Definitely was a mean storm there. About halfway through the thunder and lightning started to become very intimidating with how bright the lightning was getting and then at about the 22 minute mark that thunder got pretty serious! It was starting to freak me out and I wasn’t even there- though I have had a lack of good storms- storms in general, to be honest, this year, so I kinda wish I was there haha. But great video! Loved it!
Those were no doubt power flashes, and the strange part is, I never heard or saw any of them until I reviewed my footage later that night (I'm rather certain I was busy looking at radar and weather reports on social media when they occurred haha) At 23:10 I'm rather certain that CG lightning bolt hit a power line or grid, because there is a very brief orange glow during the strike and also (a bit more obvious) you see the lights on my street go out for a second or two. I think it's somewhat of a miracle that my power didn't permanently go out that night because of how many cloud-to-ground lightning strikes there were along with 60+ mph wind gusts! ThatStormEnthusiast yeah no problem! I looked at that one again and I definitely agree, I did see the light go out and I think I might have seen a very faint outline of the actual bolt after replaying it a few times and watching very closely. Reminds me of the first and one of the only storms I had this year. Didn’t really have any wind too it but it had a crazy amount of CG lightning. Right after one of the bolts, there was a was a powerflash just a couple houses down the road, but the electricity stayed on. But there’s no doubt that lightning struck really close to you, with the power going out for a second and that horribly loud thunder. Probably shouldn’t be watching thunderstorm videos with headphones on in a dark room while it’s raining outside but whatever 😂 Well I gtg now, hope you have a great day.

@@thatstormenthusiast That appeared to be just the light shutting down due to lightning overloading the light sensor.

@@thatstormenthusiast Strange that a very good camera to have a noticeable pixels even when i switch the video at maximum quality.
Either the video editor you used had compressed the heck out of the original quality or youtube compression or maybe the camera's setting.
Anyway - what i'm more concerned about is the microphone noise gain.
It could be the volume gain setup or maybe the position of the camera & the area but i noticed that it doesn't capture the thunder sound without some loud distortion which is an issue here.
If this was the factory mic then i advice that you get Boya VM600 mic since it's the cheapest excellent microphone when attempting to record some deep & loud bass noises around X)
Just make sure when you use that Boya mic on not to increase the volume gain too much or it'll be so loud it'll make the noise gaining unrecognizable due to the loud hissing & distortion X)
Give it a few tests by recording a video samples or using a headphone on the camera to test the audio to make it as hearable as possible without destroying the volume balance & quality.
@@aliultimate009 I had the camera at high ISO and it's a habit I need to break when it comes to night recording; as for the audio quality, no need to worry about microphone distortion as I've purchased in-ear binaural mics that are able to handle 115-130 dB of sound (in which most claps of thunder falls around the 120 dB range when the lightning strike is in close proximity)
Also in this video, I was using the internal mics on my Zoom H2 sound recorder; the thunder was so loud that the microphones couldn't handle such high decibel levels; with my new mics this should no longer be an issue

I lived for several years in Michigan. We got some just as strong and much longer lasting.. One on 10/19/98 lasted 3 and 1/2 hours and ended with a gigantic red positive bolt the thunderclap from which cracked a 14-foot high 3-inch thick plate glass window more than two miles away from top to bottom. The vibration was equal to a 4.0 earthquake..
I'm in Australia and right about now my 24 Yr old daughter would be going into complete lock down 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
