- Опубликовано: 5 окт 2024
- Grammy-winning musician Jacob Collier recently sat down with Genius to break down the chords for Daniel Caesar and H.E.R.’s 2017 collaboration, “Best Part.” Collier first became known for his multi-instrumental rearrangements of popular songs such as Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing),” and caught the attention of Quincy Jones in 2014. In this video, the 24-year-old musician puts his talent for explaining musical concepts to work.

Adam Marshall very true
He would go flex so much more if he had more time
Hahah indeed

GENIUS GETTING AN ACTUAL GENIUS ON THE CHANNEL
YES!
Reyrzy. Big fax
THATS WHAT IM SAYIN
No
How is he a genius I watched other videos I agree but from this video I gOt was It’s interesting cause he added 7th
Getting Jacob Collier to explain this chord progression is like getting Einstein to teach high school kids how fractions work
Indeed - explained in more detail than would ever be needed by beginners. Still a fantastic video
I think the great thing about Jacob is that no level of teaching is below him
It's nice to see he still can get excited about a simple minor 7th, though. :) Good stuff!
Einstein was shit at math
@@JustoAlvarez1 ??? Einstein was amazing at math
He made himself dumber for the sake of us, a true skinny legend
@Luca Bertani no need to copy paste a comment and reply it to every sarcastic comment.
@Luca Bertani weird flex but ok
We love a skinny king
Skinny legend got me quaking
This made me laugh 😂
It's probably the first time Jacob Collier is using standard tuning since the age of 3
LOL. 100% Accurate
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOO
Right? I'm getting tired of drop tuned pianos/ keyboards. >:(
Lmaoooo
I laughed way too hard at this
If I were Daniel or H.E.R. I would flip out about this. Jacob just called your song an all-time classic!
BIG praise coming from a talent like Jacob. Couldn't agree more with you.
Bram Vierstraete so true Bc Jacobs a legend djdjnd
He produced the song
Jacob isn’t wrong though. This will be an all time classic
Did you see the collab between them you should check it out
It's great to see a musical genius like Jacob who knows all the chords and notes in the book get so enthusiastic talking about a 4-chord song. A lotta guys with intermediate/advanced knowledge of music theory act so dismissive towards pop songs that repeat a few chords over & over.
this
Jacob knows it's not about the musical complexity...it's all about the vibe, the groove. He is just as good with the rhythmic aspect of music as the notes and theory.
it's cause Jacob understands the music of the world and how complex everything is, I also think he finds an appreciation for the culture that music might come from! Music history is very intresting and people of all races/backgrounds influence eachother all the time throughout history... it's a beautiful thing really
it does show ..that all the theory in the world means absolutely nothing when you get down to it...music is a feeling
AND ..that jacob does not appear to be a music snob...just because he is a musical freak of nature
this is like having Stephan hawking explaining how to access your emails, not a dig on Daniel Caeser its just Collier is insane
@Luca Bertani sorry man, I didn't mean to say Caeser is mundane just collier is overqualified for virtually all music
I feel like Jacob is trying so many things to see what he's good at.
And he's better than everyone at all of it
For the most part yeah
Haha 😅😂 reasonable comment 😅
Bud Powell
Wait is that the guy who was explaining harmony to 5 different people in the video of wired
Yes

Jacob Collier always reminding us of how untalented we all are

😂😂
Relax bro
bullshit. simple and bad are not the same thing.
@@walkerl7485 Never said it was bad. I'm a fan of both Daniel Caesar and H.E.R.'s work. But still, the topic of this 5min video is a pretty standard 4-chord loop. I understand that the intended audience are non-musicians, but the sight of Jacob explaining such bare basics feels jarring and just plain unnecessary to me, however well-executed the explanation.
Million dollar idea here: get jacob collier to discuss music theory with new wave rappers. Would honestly be pure gold to watch him try to explain the chord progression of "hideaway" to lil xan or some shit.
Lord Spade that is the best idea of all time. It would be absolutely hilarious
LMFAO
if xxxtentacion would be alive, shit would go like JC: so thats how a chord progression works and how you can do a lot of things with it
xxxtentecion: YUH!
I would pay GOOD money to watch that.
Holy shit yes!
he's exceeded just being an artist and has become the art itself imo
funkiest white guy in the game

I can imagine Daniel reacting like “I just searched up good chord progressions”
He probably wrote the melody first and then the chords.
i doubt he even wrote the music haha

what a random video
but i mean its jacob so

Finally a real Genius on this channel! This is GOLDEN information and musical perspective!
"it's just four chords being played round and round" *start using chords more than those four in 4:22
Why not? He's Jacob Collier.
Aldimeola Dewakinnara that’s called embellishment, it’s basically just jazz players doing fun things and adding their own touch to the song
Dawg dis nigga tweaking 😂
He’s setting up the chords
haha, tbh I kinda saw that coming.
1:55 Literally my body is SHIVERING
Are you ok!? Need a blanket??

I love the depth at which Jacob analyses a songs progression, in rhythm, melody, harmony etc. Such an affluent and inspirational musician!
"super computer calculating 2+2"
1:55 I was scared for my man here
Lol I thought I was the only one that heard that. It's like he asked if the had a guitar and they were like ya and handed him some shitty hard to tune student model. He, being the God that he is, worked with what he got.
HAHAHAHA
i don't get it i don't play guitar, can someone explain?
😂 💀 😆 I know!
Not a guitarist. What was the matter?
This dude already has Grammy's but deserves more
The Grammy has Jacob, not the other way around lmao.
He holds this song to such a high standard. It’s honestly amazing

what a beast this dude is...
he is feeling music,no matter how complex or simple it is
Crazy to hear someone with perfect pitch sing the note before he actually plays it
This video taught me to play the song a while back, but it's so lovely to revisit this and hear Jacob take you through the song. Wonderful soul and wonderful explanation, as always.
voice so deep
The idea of setting where home is, being reminded of home, and returning to home really resonate with me in how music can really give this unconscious satisfaction or closing the circle.
glad you guys got jacob on the channel! would love to see more like this.
Oh my god I just realized that I watched a guitar tutorial of “Best Part” by Jacob Collier before actually really knowing him!! This is so weird!!! Now that I know him I’m binge watching him on RUclips only to find this video of him!! Such a blissful coincidence!! I love your music Jacob!!! No understatement there💖💖💖
Legend has it that JC was sight-reading all the music and improvised the theory knowledge on the spot
I’ve loved him for a thousand years
this really helps thank u very much
*please do more of these*
Jacob: "Well, I want to teach them how to do augmented sixths and Chromaticism in jazz improvs"
Genius: "No, do this four-chord Daniel Ceasar song"
Jacob: "ok but I'll 7th the hell out of it"
I mean, Jacob clearly loves this song, he performed it live with Daniel Caesar. And the 7th chords are in the original song too lol
Criminally underrated comment😂
@@victormujat4710 Yes, it surely does. But if we keep the 7ths apart it'll be simpler but easier to play (and assimilate). And also, Genius brough a genius to break this down. It's just hammering a nail with a piledriving crane lol
break down frank ocean's blonde pls thx
Or Pyramid from Orange
Yes please
Chanel orange sorry lol
Yes
Y’all need to check out the dissect podcast on Spotify. He goes through and does a musical AND lyrical breakdown of both albums and places them in the historical context of their release.

MORE MUSIC THEORY VIDEOS, GENIUS!!!!!!!!!
You know what I realized...He looks like young Keanu Reeves

Holy shit just recently found out about Daniel Caesar and struggled with this song a few days ago and then there comes this MADE BY JACOB IS LIFE JUST A HUGE SIMULATION
As a huge hip hop fan, I'm really impressed by Genius featuring such a mastermind like Jacob, much respect
Genius got a real artist, first time I’ve enjoyed one of their videos in a while
We need more Jacob please I'm begging
It's really cool to see an artist like Jacob who was successful before he was mainstream. He's still not mainstream, but he's definitely gaining more of a platform.
pls bring jacob back
Lovely how that pentatonic scale over so many bright maj7 chords really mellows the overall 4 chord progression. I’ve been playing with it for hours. Simple and beautiful. 🙏
Finally a REAL Musician on Genius!
YES, I AGREE!
Really, arguments for rappers/producers being musicians/visionaries aside, there are few people they can get on here that can stack up to Collier
FACTS
@@andrewmrq2417 I'm sure you are ecstatic about your sarcasm
I absolutely love the fact that he doesn’t know the lyrics to this song
This song has such great reharmonization potential, I would have loved to hear what Jacob is thinking about in terms of extended harmony. For example, in the live version he sometimes replaces the Bbmaj7 with a C13(#11,#15) to get a luscious superlydian subtonic.
C13(#11,#15)? Is a #15 not the same as a 16, or a 1?
This is so soothing and not condescending in any way. I've always been intimidated by music theory even though I love singing and jazz and this little snippet didn't make me feel like an idiot lol. I wonder if he's done more of these! Would love to be taught like this. Thanks Jacob!

3:12 Classic Jacob Collier: sneakily drops some negative harmony hints here and there. Bbmaj7 is the negative harmony conjugate chord of the tonic Dmaj7.
Is that true?? Can you demonstrate?
That's in Caesars original recording though
Egginator lol u right idk what this dude is tryna prove
Pegaso Stiky Sure. One of the ways to access the equivalent scale but with “negative polarity” is to pair every note with its “mirrored” note across a symmetry axis. This symmetry axis lays by definition in the middle of the tonic (D, in D major scale) and the fifth (A, in our case). So basically you have to draw a line exactly between D and A and pair them.
If you want to understand this well, take a piece of paper and write all twelve notes in a line like ‘C, Db, D, Eb, E, F,...’ and find the middle point between D and A. Now connect all the lines from one side to the other side of the line. Now, for the mind blowing part, write the circle of fifths and link the paired notes you just found. See how simple it is on it.
So you can see that if you transform the home chord Dmaj7 (D, F#, A, C#) to its ‘negative’ conjugate (D→A, A→D, F#→F, C#→Bb) and you have Bbmaj7 (Bb, F, D, A).
@@ShashH-nz6bf bruh just Google it. Literally a circle that goes up in fifths (often with an inner circle containing the relative minor keys as well). C G D A E B and so on til it goes from F to C.
I didn’t expect to get so much raw understanding of music theory from this, he defiantly made some things click for me in that last half
This is like Isaac Newton teaching arithmetic to children.
I was following along and feeling like I could vibe with it, and then you started sewing at 4:27. I wish I could play like that, or at least understand why that sounded so good.
3:54 Did this mans really just jump from D to F# on the next octave??
Like how tf do you obtain such big hands
This is a really good practice that all artist should apply themself. Showing your fans how to play your song
