  • Can you get Dolby Atmos Without eARC? In this video we'll look at 3 different ways to get Dolby Atmos with standard ARC. This will work with Soundbars and AV Receivers for Home Theatres. It's common for people to talk about the HDFury Arcana but there are 2 other very overlooked methods to achieving the same result and it may save you a bit of money. Some TV's with ARC ports are still Dolby Atmos compatible. I hope this video has helped you.

Had to buy the new Apple TV and sooooo glad we did! Atmos works extremely well with it, you saved us getting a new TV just for eArc. Admittedly, an 85” Sony with Dolby vision would have been a nice addition haha! Thanks again for your very helpful vids!

@@Maggieismydog You're spot on. You don't need the Arcana... That's only for Soundbars that don't have any HDMI inputs like the Sonos ARC or Bose 900. The Q990B has 2 HDMI inputs so you just plug the apple TV into one of them and you'll get Atmos.

This is a great video. A couple of questions: my TV doesnt have Dolby Atmos support but the soundbar does. I have a PS5, Xbox Series X and Firetv 4k. I would like to get the atmos sound from all of them. My current method is to use the optical cable from the tv to soundbar with everything connecting directly to the tv so there is no confusion for me. Anyway my tv is Samsung Q70B series that according to their website has dolby digital plus. My soundbar is the Q700C. How do i connect all these and get the best sound. With my current setup I notice a big difference if i play netflix 4k movie through the xbos series X/Amazon FireTV 4k instead of directly through the TV app.

Bought the Samsung hw-q990b soundbar only to find out that my oldish LG EG910V (HD only, with HDMI 2.0 ports and ARC) wouldn't play Atmos.
This issue was clearly indicated in Series S Xbox (audio related test view), but as soon as I attached the Google Tv to one of the HDMI inputs in the soundbar, the Xbox was able to verify that there is indeed Dolby Atmos available. Prior to this,I just haf to purchase either Atmos or DTS-X plugin from the store and ready to enjoy the advanced features. When I now watch dolby Atmos videos in Netflix (Ultra subscription), there is a Dolby Atmos text shown in the soundbar's display.

I find eARC is really unnecessary and causes issues . Apps can easily be heard /viewed from a 4K Firestick plugged into the receiver.
My major issue with eARC is that it works with HDMI control . I’ve found HDMI control turned on can actually make your receiver turn on in the middle of the night by itself ! Disabling HDMI control fixed the issue . I’m a bit old fashioned and prefer to turn on my devices individually by myself and just change the receiver input selection . Having the tv remote control every device is never as flexible or comprehensive as having the dedicated remote for each device with specific buttons tailored for the specific device

Right, so if you have an LG 2018 model, which has Dolby Atmos but Arc only, and want to get the true uncompressed Dolby Atmos via eArc through the use of apps such as Prime, Netflix, HBO and regular TV from your provider, it does not matter because they are streaming the compressed (DD+) version of Atmos any way?
If that is correct then the only reason for wanting eArc would be for when you watch BluRays, right?
Another thing, I use my apps via the LG TV directly, so it is not coming from the TV box from my internet+tv provider. Would this setup then become impossible because of the LG TV sending its own signal to the HDFury just to get it's own signal back again?

I'm evaluating two Atmos capable sound systems that both support pass-through of the TV images from an Amazon Firestick MAX. My problem is that one of the soundbars only has one HDMI ARC port. As I'll need the HDMI port to connect my Firestick, can I use the Optical connector to pass-through pictures to my TV or is there some kind of HDMI Splitter switch that'll allow me to double-up on my use of the soundbar's single HDMI ARC port? I'd also like to connect a 3rd HDMI device to my setup, a Blueray player, if possible. Many thanks for any replies.

Also I have Display port 1.4 there are cables which on one end have a 1.4 displayport and on the other 2.1 HDMI would that do any good, or are they meant for other purposes...

OK my TV is 2017 Panasonic TH-50EX730Z and only has ARC. It doesn't support Atmos but does have Dolby Digital Plus. However should I be able to get Atmos through Netflix onboard TV App if I connect the TV ARC port to the my new Samsung Q800B Soundbar eARC In port? As you said Netflix and other streaming services seem to only stream Atmos as Dolby Digital Plus. It says Dolby Digital Plus in the soundbar display when I play an Atmos movie. Thus I assume Im getting Atmos but a compressed version of it??? Also do I really need a 2.1 HDMI cable if the streaming service is compressed Atmos? I bought a 2022 Apple 4K TV box too. As my TV doesn't support eARC should I connect the Apple TV to the HDMI IN on the soundbar and then the eARC port on the soundbar to the TV ARC? Is this your Method 2??? Netflix also say the TV has to support Atmos to get their movies in that format as well as the sound system. Whilst I see Atmos on the Amazon Prime movie titles that have it Netflix just says 5.1. Im hoping with the Apple 4K TV box Ill get the Netflix titles showing Atmos. Otherwise I think I will need a new TV?????? Also the cable that came with the Q800B says High Speed HDMI. It doesn't have any other marks. How do you know if the cable is HDMI 2.1? Many thanks from Turangi, NZ.

Great video mate! I've got a quick question...Let's say your TV is Dolby Atmos compatible, and you use the inbuilt apps to stream movies/TV. You then output sound to your Dolby Atmos soundbar via ARC/eARC. Given that all streamed content uses Dolby Digital Plus for Atmos (not Dolby TrueHD), is the added bandwidth of the eARC being utilised at all here? (as opposed to just ARC?) My understanding is that from a Dolby sound perspective, the additional bandwidth from the eARC is only needed for Dolby TrueHD. I.e. DD+ runs just fine (at it's full intended quality) using just ARC. Is that right?

    • @archwaytech

Unless I play something back through the TV itself that is available in Dolby Digital Plus, the option to change it to DD+ is greyed out.

If your TV doesn't have eARC but can pass through Atmos then it'll be in the form of Dolby Digital Plus which is the format most streaming services use. If you want full Atmos through Dolby True HD then you'll need to plug a blu ray player into the Samsung Q990B's HDMI input.
