@@dwaynejackson551 yeah, he even gave a response on reddit when someone asked how to combat the Matt Mercer effect. I'm talking about the sheer amount of hard work he's had to put into getting to the level he's at today which is truly only mediocre, which is why he merged the two skill sets, it gives an air of a higher aptitude because it does improve things but that's only in his case, that stuff won't work for everyone. The dude is human and not highly talented like everyone believes, it actually does him a disservice when you claim he is because my dad knew him when he was still around and his whole life was nothing but pure effort. I think it's that D&D is fundamentally about interacting with people, and westmarsh servers have larger amounts of people than is typical in a D&D game. And it's like, in a large enough group of people, you will eventually run into someone immature, petty, or vindictive.

Yeah I'm the same I mean I like CR to a minor extent (specifically the first campaign as it felt like a bunch of friends getting together to play DnD, while the 2nd & 3rd campaigns felt more like a live show), but I never try to emulate Mercer, I try to keep to my own style (only thing I ever use from Mercer is the "How Do You Want to Do This?")

The thing People forget is that people on critical role are using DND to perform a story in front of a live audience to earn a living. Their is no quicker way to kill someone's passion in a hobby than to treat it like a profession, especially if you are not getting paid for it. A hobby is fun because you can do it on your own time and at your own pace and can stop the moment it losses your interest. On the other hand, a job is demanding and exhausting, so even if you love your job you can easily grow to hate it from the burnout. You can't even leave as easily as a hobby because of the risks unemployment has to anyone with a lack of emergency funds.

Westmarch servers have a habit of drawing in lots of players, and it just seems a lot of those coming in aren't being screened properly, so you end up with creeps coming in. And then you have those situations where the creep has friends on the admin teams, which only makes things worse. They know how to butter up or befriend the right people, so they can then do whatever they want without fear of punishment. In a more controlled setting, such people would be quickly tossed out or at least quickly punished for infractions.

Not enough people realise that shows like Dimension 20 and Critical Role are essentially the WWE of DnD. They’re both shows made to entertain an audience first and DnD games second in the same way that WWE is a show made to entertain an audience first and wrestling second. Both can be pretty great and perfectly enjoyable in their own right but they’re not entirely the exact same things.

A Westmarch is effectively a single setting run by multiple DMs who run various one-shots with a concurrent story in said setting. Players can join a session if they desire or are available. Players can join in with a character into the shot depending on their level to avoid overshadowing.
Effectively, it's like trying to make an MMORPG out of a TTRPG.

I was in a discord PbP D&D server and in the general chat we started to talk about what type of games we run. I mentioned that I run a game for kids (up to early teens at the time) and our game didn't get into the whole sedative/sexual gender identity aspect so as not to confuse children and to be parent friendly (also legal issues). Due to this, I was basically called all sorts of horrible names and chased out of the group. It was disgusting and just showed me what these people (the people in this particular discord group not D&D players in general) really wanted to push, especially on kids.

When it comes to these online groups you really need to gauge where people stand on these issues because there is a lot of abrasive debates going on out there and everyone gets very passionate about them. I don't have the energy for these things and I'm mostly disengaged from these discussions, so I don't mind people defending one thing or the other. But overall it's good to know what the group is like so that you don't end up stepping on anyone's toes while participating.

Just like in most forms of entertainment, remakes are basically pointless. I love Critical Role and occasionally I will sprinkle in the occasional reference. Through dimensional portal shenanigans my players recently found themselves briefly in Sir Terry Pratchett's Discworld, but reenacting entire scenes, plots and scenarios from my favorite media? Isn't it typically a pale imitation and removing one of D&D's biggest strengths if you already know the outcome? About the only remake I find that has a reason to exist are video game remakes as they typically offer better graphics and additional content while using modern hardware so it does not require you to dig up your antiquated electronics to play an old favorite game.

Unpopular opinion: I'm not a fan of Critical Role and don't get the hype. (The below opinion is based on the half-dozen or so episodes I watched a few years ago, so not sure if these complaints are still valid.)
If I played in those campaigns, I'd probably have left after a few sessions. In general, the story/action moves very slowly. It's apparent that group _loves_ role playing, which is great, but they often don't seem to understand when extended RP segments detract from the overall story-telling with tangential irrelevancies. Sometimes, you just need to cut it off and do something that moves the story forward.

Story #1 - Needless to say, DM was the one ruining everything here. If DMs want to take ideas from CR or wherever, that's fine, but forget trying to exactly replicate whatever goes on - it is just not going to happen. The game is all about the people actually there at the table, NOT what the rulebook says OR what some other group says or does.
Story #2 - Evil campaigns suck. This is why. Just walk.
Story #3 - Yep, multiple Red Flags for Mark straight-up. No real surprises here. Given what HE did to that server membership overall, I wonder if his friends are still his friends.
Story #4 - REALLY Bad DM. In every way possible. There are specifics I could pick out but, simply, it was all about him, not his Players. A very cool twist to this story, and I'm glad it worked out so well for OP and others.
Story #5 _ Definite murderhobos. If the Player chose to stick with this bunch, that was entirely his call. But WHY would a LG Character tolerate what these Characters did? It makes no sense at all. Also clear is that the DM isn't doing the work, so maybe he's burnt-out or something. Yeah, quit, move on, whatever.

Granted I like Critical Role, and I would not mind playing a game in that world. That Is where I draw the line, I am in the mind set that every DM has a peticuler style simmler to Martal Arts. You should not take away players agency to replace an episode of Critical Role. You cant expect every DM to be Like mat Mercer, like you cant expect every Martal Artest to be Bruce Lee, Chuck Noris, or Jacky Chan. When I do watch Critical Role I do think what I would do in the situation, and it may be different to what the cast will do. After all to me D&D is more of a What If and Chose Your Own Adventer game, not a Play by Play account of some one else.

I don't like ANYTHING from CR being copied. It's a red flag and it's always turned out as bad as I thought it would every time. I was in one game the GM asked me "How do you want to do it?" and I had no idea what he was talking about. It wasn't until I was told it meant I landed the killing blow. I made it as bleak and realistic as possible just to screw with the people because I don't like the limelight and you'd think the GM would have remembered that before copying something that puts the limelight on players and using it on the player that doesn't want the limelight.
I've also been in games with some seriously idiotic people. One German chick who literally was just a contrarian to the point where she would try to make a point only for you to realize it was stupid when she finished. A furry who played a promiscuous person, tried to run a PF2e game only to run the most boring game ever, then proceed to want to play a ra*ist in the system I offered to run while trying to use "I've been a GM for a long time" to try and appeal to authority to force me to allow it. One player in that one was obsessed with Communist Russia and never stop mentioning how amazing and great it was despite being a failed state and another quiet person who clearly didn't want to be there after I laid down rules about how stupid crap would be punished because I won't make the world revolve around the players but make it a living and breathing setting.
I've stopped playing D&D for obvious reasons and I don't even run it anymore. I've actually stopped making adventures for it which isn't even unique to me so if you notice a lack of content it's because a lot of us normal people have moved to other systems that are far better designed and far more likely to gatekeep on a company level to avoid selling out to weirdos. I played in ONE game and I wouldn't say it was top tier but it was good and it opened my eyes to how a system is when it's creator loves it instead of using it to push activism. Sword World saved TTRPGs for me. I even have a new pen name now and have released three adventures online that are highly regarded even in Japan. I'm actually glad someone out there enjoys my adventures since it felt like no one cared for a long time.

In the game I ran three of the players ran what was really modified character from CR.
The couple ran a pair of half elves whose settlement was wiped out by orcs instead of a dragon, another ran a Fallen Aasimar Folk Hero Paladin.
Sadly the rogue not really that interested in d &d allowed her husband to turn her character into his sidekick as an arcane trickster so he could obtain the spellbooks she would have to locate for her own character.
As for the Fallen Aasimar he apparently doesn't understand about Folk Heroes so I modifed his back story from isolating himself at a remote monastery to he was orphaned and raised within the city the game started within..
His situation inspiring the city inhabitants to rise up in protest creating a new order of knights known as the Free Knights composed of former Royal Guard, City Guard and other recruits intent on preventing what had happened to him happening to anyone else in that city.
As i said he doesn't understand what a Folk Hero is.
I had planned shifting the setting into a domain of dread so I could stage a much needed session zero as it was originally a one shot but the other dm who played the other half elf a shadow sprceror got bored of his game and decided to jump settings ignoring the fact he couldn't since my game established his is set on an entirely different world which he repeatedly agreed to until he lost any interest in keeping his own game straight.
