As someone who has struggled with severe depression for years, I have had episodes that are eerily similar to this. Thankfully I had friends to pull me out of it, but if someone was having similar issues, and was isolated or not in contact wiht anyone, this sounds very possible, almost likely.
The fact that they didn't even attempt to clean the mouldy dishes or dust and just breathed it in for hours while playing games is probably the most paranormal part of this story tbh. Man is probably depressed, help a dude out (and your lungs)
Yes that true but on the other hand he couldn't have done anything to help that person in that moment. He would have needed serious professional help and as the narrator didn't know what was wrong he couldn't evaluate the situation. If a person which you can't recognise, stands there and looks at you for a long period of time, combined with the state of the house and the young age and probably limited knowledge with mental illness, it can trigger a strong fear and your flight instinct. He tried to get more information afterwards so i think he did what he was personally able to. And for the not cleaning, that really odd, it could be a coping mechanism though. Him trying to distract his friend and himself.
And i don't necessarily mean that it would have been dangerous to help (even though it might have been, considering the severity of Johns mental state) but honestly i am not familliar enough with catatonia to tell
I can tell you with 1000% certainty that I personally wouldn't have cleaned shit. Sure, if the story is true, he didn't do his friend any favors by not helping him in the least. But you wouldn't catch me cleaning somebody's house and doing their dishes. Especially if I was only staying one night.
I worked as a janitor to pay the bills for part of my time at grad school. If there was a wedding reception that had uneaten food, JACKPOT. (One time, there were chicken tenders.)
I worked at a theater and sometimes I was so tempted to. I didn't because gross, but I get the temptation. You end up working these hectic shifts and don't eat or drink anything for hours and then there's just a full soda ... Sitting there ...
Poochie Collins just because you haven’t been catatonic doesn’t mean other people haven’t. It’s perfectly plausible for others to experience a catatonic-like depression

Me the entire story: “Damm, this guy just seems really depressed.” I’ve had a similar situation to this happen in my family. My uncle had gone off the grid for about 3 months, no calls, no internet presence, wasn’t answering the door. Eventually one of my cousins (his son) broke into his house to see a a total mess very much to what is described in the video. Molded food, thick layers of dust, one clear path that has been taken for the past months. From what my cousin told me it was like a haunted house and it was terrifying to see his father very feeble sleeping in his bed. My cousin called an ambulance and my uncle was treated for malnutrition, dehydration and a very severe case of depression caused by nothing anybody knew about. When I first met him it was crazy, he looked and acted so much differently, it kinda look like all the life was drained out of him and all that was left was an empty shell. He’s doing better now, though he is still suffering from depression and the lack of energy to do the most basic things. But he lives with his son who we visit regularly and he’s slowly becoming the uncle I knew.
My thoughts exactly, he just seemed to be going through a really rough patch with depression, I wouldn't be surprised if he started ignoring his own health. I remember not having an appetite when I went through an episode myself so the possibility that he's starving himself doesn't seem to far fetched. I hope your uncle gets better btw, I know depression can affect family too
When you are depressed nothing matters...nothing...just feelings of hoplessness, worthlessness and sorrow. I hope your Uncle finds his way out of the fog. ✌❤🖖
I’m so so sorry, I really hope for a speedy recovery for your uncle. But that’s exactly what I was thinking the entire story. Instead of calling someone to help immediately, he said his “friend” was possessed. These are clear signs something’s very wrong. Walking in first thing, I would have called someone. If the story is real, I hope John got the help he needed too. Positive vibes sent to you and your family!
That’s why I’m not sold 100% either way. Because whatever way you try to sell it, there’s still questions left unanswered, nothing fits well enough for me to feel satisfied with the answer. If it’s just depression, what’s the deal with the hole? What’s the deal with the primal fear? If it’s supernatural, where’s the evidence?
@@spencerthestupidsamurai7326 maybe delusions since nothing in the house had been touched for months which means he had been in a depressive episode for a while. Theres still the factor that the narrator felt so terrible being in his presence, as he described it being similar to an apex predator. I dont know if it was because he was in a recliner and had some sort of recliner induced fear, but you cant really get that super freaked out because of a person under normal circumstances
@@orangeman3220 If you know nothing about depression symptoms and your brain goes straight to something spooky you absolutely can. Yeah, this sounds like a horrible depressive episode. Before my sister was diagnosed with MDD, she dropped off the grid and when we checked on her after a few months the floor was covered in garbage, moldy dishes, rotten food in fridge. She even peeled all the paint off one wall.
So I have two theories: 1. Depression, major depression. 2. Injured his head, causing damage to his brain. Maybe at some point he was under his trailer for a reason, something happened and he crashed his head through the floor, causing the hole. Either or, this story is really sad. This guy clearly needed medical help and his friends got too spooked to do anything about it.
Cupid well they tried to figure out what was going on after the left sooo... In my opinion I wouldn’t stay in a place that was looking and smelling like shit. So in my opinion if I were in this situation I would leave to clear my mind and ask people for help as opposed to stay.
I've had major depression, where I didn't bathe or brush my teeth a couple weeks at a time, and the only reason I ate was because my dad would bring me a plate of dinner all cut up in bite sized pieces sometimes. It got to the point where I didn't believe anything was real because of how heavy I was dissociating. I started thinking that I lived in a fairy world and that the air was ink because of how difficult it was to simply just breathe. I got uti's because I would not have the mental energy to get up out of bed and would hold it for hours and hours until I would have to quite literally run to the bathroom. I would not have a bowel movement more than once a week because it took too much mental energy to clean myself after. (Sorry, tmi I guess) It took too much energy to even turn over in bed to reach for my pillbox every morning and take my medication. It was awful. This story terrifies me. Partially because the idea of someone watching me in the darkness has always been a massive fear of mine, along with the hole in the floorboards allowing anything to sneak in during the night. But also, because of the fear that if I move out of my parents house the depression will happen to me again and I would be completely helpless. I don't actually know why I'm spilling all this, I'm sitting with a lump in my throat remembering all of it. I'm sorry to anyone that has to read it, I just kind of felt the need to share my story from the perspective of someone who has been like the guy in the story, a living and walking husk of who they once were.
Well hey.. If you do have an episode like that again though, just know you will get through it like you have before. Even though it's literal hell on earth... You will get through it. You are resilient and strong. Stay safe, guy... I understand how difficult these things can be..

The only thing scary about this story is how the narrator dismissed every logical explanation and thought his very clearly ill friend was possessed. C'mon.
From what I know about bipolar, they go through good long period of extreme high(mania) & extreme low(depression). These period usually last weeks to upto months.

I'M SORRY BUT THE NARRATOR JUST WROTE A COUPLE PARAGRAPHS ABOUT HOW DIRTY THE PLACE WAS AND THEY JUST CASUALLY HOPPED ON THEIR LAPTOPS AFTER THAT WHAT THE-
All of the comments agree that this is some sort of psychosis or deep depressive episode, but blame the friend for not doing more. As a person who worked with folks who live with mental illness, and lives with clinical depression, it's not really that simple. The guy was 18 years old, he probably genuinely had no idea what was going on. The average person (let alone a teenager) who hasn't had or cared for someone with severe mental illness really wouldn't know that those are the signs and what to do in that situation. It can be really scary for people who don't understand what's going on. I've worked with clients whose own parents are scared of them when they are in that deep. He isn't solely responsible, no one person really is. Things have changed a lot in the last couple of years, we as a society have become much more aware of these signs and mental illness is definitely becoming less stigmatized. Could he have done more? Yes. Would I have known to do more when I was 18? Hell no. I would have left 10 minutes into that situation and never looked back.
I'm on the spectrum, and I honestly would have been too fucking nervous to even walk in. I would have made every excuse in the world to get him out the house just so I wouldnt have had to confront the living condition situation. It would have only been later had I realized what was actually happening. People can pin and project what the narrator SHOULD have done, instead of understanding that the guy had no clue what he could have done. And I admittedly, would have been too far repulsed and freaked out to even approach the situation face first like that. Maybe the narrator being so niave was just enough for him to confront it, but not address it. Too young to understand why it should be much scarier than he initially assumed, but too inexperienced to have the mental understanding of his friends state of mind.
Tbh as someone who has dealt with depression since long before I was 18 years old, it's sad to see the way the narrator immediately villainized his friend's clear mental illness and treated him like he was a monster. Kind of goes to show how stigmatized mental illness really is in the minds of neurotypical people. Clearly we as a society need to do more in educating young people about what mental illness is like and how to treat people with depression with empathy rather than fear. It's a sad story all around tbh.
Another thing as well I would like to say is that some people who have went through knowing someone who significantly impacted their life go through something might not be able to cope when someone else experiences this. I know people who if someone approaches them who is clearly very drunk it scares them so much because their parents were alcoholics. They would leave the situation even if that person needed help. I’ve seen this happen to multiple people because they don’t fully understand how different people act with mental illnesses, addictions, etc and feel like everyone acts like the people who hurt them (either purposely or not purposely). I hope that makes sense.
My man sounds depressed as all hell. He reached out in a last-ditch effort to some old pals, who were disgusted and frightened of him, and he didn't even have the energy or health to explain. As someone that been depressed and suicidal for a lot of my life, this makes me sad. :-(
After listening to this, and thinking about it all night... this happened to a local man here in NC. He came into my friends Aarons (rent-a-center basically) and got some tables, lamps, couches. My friend said when they delivered them, the man was completely sane and well spoken. About 4 months to by and they stopped receiving payments. So they went to his house to seize the furniture. My friend said when he walked in the house was basically as described here. Bad dusty, musty, and very moldy. Not how it was when they first met him just months before. Said the guy was just staring at the ceiling. And was absolutely confused as to why they were taking his furniture. Turned out, some mold in the home infected his lungs, causing him to take in a fraction of the oxygen. His brain, unable to receive the oxygen it needed, made him act as basically a zombie. So either the friend had an irreversible case of depression, or an extreme case of a fungal infection. Mold is very good at hiding, no matter how clean the surfaces in your house can look. You have walls, ceilings, nooks, and crannies, that can retain moisture and cause extreme mold infestations.
This story sounds like the roommate was insanely depressed. The hole is peculiar, but perhaps John did it in a manic episode. I’m kinda confused how the narrator thinks possession is the reasoning and not a metal health episode. Anyways, good episode ghoul bois, looking forward to the new season of unsolved!
I think I agree that the roommate is depressed or has some sort of mental health issue and I was also kind of thrown for a loop by the hole, but if it's true that the friend said it looked like it was made from the outside, then I really don't know what to think.
Yuppppp... I also feel like he might've been struggling with some kind of addiction along with depression/bipolar/schizophrenia or similar... his "disappearance" could've been him being sent to some kind of residential treatment program, and stigma surrounding mental illness and drug abuse could've kept his family from extrapolating on it. As for the whole "bad energy" these guys were getting, ppl tend to be very repulsed by unsanitary environments and odd behavior as a survival instinct. I'm not even a huge skeptic or anything, but the vast majority of this just makes me sad tbh. hope this guy got some help and also some better friends.
@@redvdtx I think the most logical conclusion would be perhaps it was made during a manic episode and the roommate went under the house and for whatever reason made a hole.
@@mariecohen4201 yeah I’m normally a skeptic but I’m here for conversations about potential spooky stuff. But this truly sounds like the roommate was struggling with something. @@kaskaskas I mean if the floor was weak and the guy's leg happened to fall in....he needs to pull his leg out which could create the upward bend of the wood.
@@lollipopsie_5230 that’s kinda where the manic part fits in. I remember once I was trying to get rid of weeds but I didn’t notice until someone told me that I’d basically dug up a portion of the lawn. Or how I deconstructed a wooden chest and tried to build something else out of it.
could’ve been a toxic mold based illness. when you’re exposed to it, it can cause depression, brain flog, anxiety, attention difficulties, disorientation, appetite/ mood swings, numbness, vertigo, and insomnia, etc - which could explain why he had delayed responses, was starring at the ceiling in his room, standing in the middle of hallway, as well as why he wasn’t eating and wasn’t taking care of himself or his place 🤷🏻♀️
This is an interesting angle, could even explain the hole if he was trying to remove a mold spot and inhaling a bunch in the process. To me it feels like he must have had preexisting mental health issues, but something like that certainly could've pushed things over the edge and triggered a spiral like what's described here
I lived in a moldy ass flat for like a year and can corroberate this statement. Mold is bad for everyone but if you have more allergies you are more likely to be sensative to it. I spent a year being a snotty, weepy, anxious, frightfully forgetful, sleep deprived mess. Also it had slugs
I definitely think it's something along these lines! A mental issue for sure, but one triggered by or exacerbated by an environmental factor like mold. Another factor other than mold (or in addition to mold) could be a bite from a rabid animal, which would explain the direction of the hole where something burrowed up from underneath instead of going from inside the house down. Both mold and rabies can cause severe inflammation in the brain leading to all sorts of unusual behavior.

My first thought. I mean you sure as hell don't want to look into my fridge when I have a major depressive episode. Shout out to the lentils that spend 2 months on my fridge lol
I’m glad we all agree it’s depression. And tbh, it might be triggered by the fact that his friend moved out. Going from having someone always there to living alone again is hard- I didn’t even like my old roommate, but after the initial buzz of living on my own again, it gets pretty lonely.
I’m 28. The oldest. There’s 3 of us kids. My sisters live together, I still live at home with mom and dad. People make me feel inadequate Bc I don’t live on my own. “Oh you still live with your parents? That must be tough. With your sisters being younger and on their own” Truth is I couldn’t move out. I need to come home to something. I pay my folks rent and have since I was 18. I could afford to live on my own. But the thought of coming home from work every night to an empty house just makes me sad. I can’t do it. Even when my folks go on vacation or anytime I have the house to myself I just feel uneasy. If the house is empty I’ll sleep in the living room instead of my bed room. Idk why but it makes me feel a little better. I need someone to make me feel comfortable. I really hope I’m able to explain it to my future wife one day but I fear she’ll just think I’m being clingy. I just don’t want to be alone with my thoughts. I don’t want to come home to nothing. I can’t live that way. Tried it once, unfortunately covid cut it short, but even then it wouldn’t have lasted long. It was early 2020 from early January until March, then covid hit, I stopped working and HAD to move back home. Truth be told I wouldn’t have lasted another 3 months anyway. The hole was likely made by an animal intrigued by the smell digging under the trailer. As for OP, he says he felt such a strong sense of dread and "primal fear" when near him but decided to... stay in his house overnight playing video games? If this was scarier than a bear for him i assume he'd also stay in the house with a bear then?
He probably tried to second guess himself since John technically hadn’t done anything creepy at that point and just wanted to keep him company and be a good friend. But getting stared at while he slept was the last straw and spooked him too much to feel safe staying.
My problem is why he just decided to sit down and play on the computer?? Why aren’t they cleaning up the house?? Especially when he is planning on living there again!!!!

@@jdonovan74 I get the feeling that the author was exaggerating for the sake of the story when he said "hours". However, if it was depression, the whole staring off into space can be described as an episode of disassociation, which can sometimes look like daydreaming or spacing out to another person, so it's not impossible for it to still be about depression.
Yeah as someone with psychosis and depression it’s really obvious that “John” was going through a severe depressive episode, but also the thing I haven’t seen anyone address is how common the delusion that someone you know personally isn’t who they once were/are a totally different person. So when the narrator said that John might be having a psychotic break it’s more likely that the narrator experienced a minor delusion due to John’s sudden change in behaviour that was further exacerbated by his friend feeding into his delusion by being so freaked out. The only true horror of this story was a lack of awareness of mental illness and a lack of human compassion from the narrator and his friend.
Or his friend had catatonia which is terrifying if you don’t understand or know what’s going on. His friend was obviously having a mental break. Some type of psychosis or catatonic state. My ex went through this and honestly it was scary at times...late at night after he’d be in bed all day and night he’d come downstairs and just stare at me. Then walk in the kitchen stare in the fridge and go back upstairs. Silent but had very bad “vibes” surrounding him. Found out he was schizophrenic and was going through psychosis and catatonia...
Maybe we shouldn’t be blaming a scared kid for not knowing how to deal with something as frightening and confusing as a friend having a severe mental heath episode, hmm?
This 100% sounds like major depressive disorder or the depressive state in a bipolar disorder. There's nothing paranormal about it, and the narrator definitely should have called for EMS or immediately called the non emergency line for a welfare check. Gotta check in on your friends and make sure they're okay.
Prolly not real, and we can guess prolly hasnt eaten or drunk in at least a month from everything dusty and moldy, also the hole makes it seem like some sci if horror monster replaced or mind controlled his friend
I can’t really blame the Narrator here as he clearly just lacked proper education on Mental Health which is why he had assumed John had been Possessed or replaced by a Doppelgänger as when you lack the education to see the signs his strange behavior can only be rationalized by the Supernatural as he likely grew up in an environment that threw strange behavior like John’s into the Supernatural similarly seen in the good ol’ Salem Witch Trials from way back in the day, it is the same logic after all, Women act weird or mentally ill she must be a Witch, John doesn’t clean and is emotionally unresponsive he must be a Monster, it is just tragic to see though.
@@themultiversalassociationo9746 no as it’s likely entirely real and everything can just be explained by Depression and Mental Illness, The Moldy Dishes are being misinterpreted by you as well as both Ryan and Shane as they are a clear sign that he is actually eating he is just not cleaning nor is he eating a lot as the statement of half eaten food on the table meaning he is eating again just not a lot nor is he cleaning as he’s just lost the motivation to clean it because of his Depression, (which also likely led to a further spiral of depression as he could have started hating himself for letting his Trailer get in this state furthering his depression more while still not doing anything about the mess due to his killed motivation leading to a self destructive cycle over and over again but that is just speculation on my part), The Hole is also easily explainable by a possible Manic Episode as it is very easy to tear a Hole into Floorboards and especially through a Trailer and it’s not unlikely that he didn’t have Tools like a Hammer to rip up the Floorboard on the Trailer. The only reason this sounds Supernatural is due to the way the Narrator wrote it (Who’s bias is obvious to frame the situation as Supernatural) and the way Ryan Narrated The Story as this is a Horror Series meant to Scare the viewer giving it its Supernatural Tone. To sum it up this is just an obvious case of Depression painted with a Supernatural Coat of Paint on top of it which is why it sounds scarier than it really is, though I will also admit it is also possible the Narrator could have stretched the Truth in certain areas and given certain situations fancier wording to make it scarier than what really happened like with him comparing John to a Bear or John’s mysterious disappearance at the end, however at the end of the day it still is an easily explainable and plausible story.
@@theburningphoenix dude we don't mean the mold,we mean the dust, also literally ALL his food is moldy and the dust suggests he hasn't use his fridge or sink in at least a month
This story is super telling, not regarding what’s happening with the friend (he’s obviously experiencing a pretty severe depressive episode) but the narrator. He’s 17, moved out of his house pretty young, then had to move back in to help his parents with bills. There’s no mention of school and he and his other friend spend all their time playing video games (which deal heavily with paranormal and magical themes and stories). He’s pretty young and doesn’t come from a super stable household, not saying these events didn’t happen but he clearly was filtering them through a pretty warped lens. The kind that reads pretty standard depression symptoms as alien possession. Hopefully his friend got help.
The artwork that Mollie Ong brings to this show is astoundingly creepy and wonderful. even simple scenes that don't show many details are full of such an unsettling atmosphere
Yoooo Isn’t is wild that the horror genre has demonized mental illness so much that whenJohn is displaying symptoms of like severe depression the instant reaction from his roommate is to be like “shit was super spooky, idk bro musta been something paranormal”
I used to think it was lame that people complained about the way mental illness is used in horror movies (even as someone with mental illness) because I was so well educated about mental illness that I thought it was obvious how wrong it was. Then real world experience and stories like this slapped me in the face and made me realize how dangerous it is. How uneducated people don't see this and feel concerned, they feel afraid. That is the scariest part of this story. He was afraid OF his friend instead of FOR him.
Exactly this. I lived with someone dealing with severe bipolar and OCD when I was a teen. In my 20s I started going to see horror movies for the first time with a friend (I’d only ever seen, like, the Sixth Sense as a kid) and after about three I was like: wow. Every single one of these stories, if you took away the special effects, is just a mythologized version of someone having an intense mental health crisis (postpartum depression, a psychotic break, etc.) I was so sad after every movie, I had to stop going to them. All I could think of was hundreds of years of people like my loved one getting treated like they were evil or possessed. :(
If you think about it, horror in general has been historically regressive. One of the most famous examples would be HP Lovecraft and his racism, and there's been a lot of analysis thoughout the years on how it affected his works. There's also more general tropes like the lesbian vampire.
@@scarlettbat I have epilepsy and in doing research about it, i found out that back in the day people with epilepsy were thought to be possessed by demons because of the epileptic seizures and were often basically killed by phony cures, rituals and I’m pretty sure to this day in countries where education lacks it happens. Quite sad.
I wouldn't say the genre has demonized mental illness and rather that society has demonized mental illness to the point that when we are trying to create a horror movie or game or whatnot, we create monsters and villains that exhibit signs of mental illness, particularly psychosis. It's not that the genre has decided mental illness is scary - it's that the genre is influenced by societal thinking. I completely agree with your point, I'm just offering a different way to think about it and probably coming off as pedantic in the process lol
Love how the narrator even stated himself that John could’ve had a psychotic breakdown or an addiction to drugs, but proceeds to choose to believe that it’s something paranormal instead.
@@UltimateKyuubiFox i think ryan usually considers mental illnesses and drugs before most other things. he talks about mass hysteria and sleep paralysis and genuinely considers them. what sets him and shans apart is the fact that if mental health, drugs, etc do get ruled out as causes for weird things happening, ryan is ready to believe it's paranormal and shane isn't. ryan just gets spooked easily. he gives cases fair analysis. but that's just my opinion
The hole in the floor had me thinking that maybe the guy had tried to kill someone and the victim crawled back through the floor. I think "my roommate killed someone" wasn't an option but it was the first thing that popped into my mind.
yes omg like john was clearly not in the right headspace (manic depression or something) and they didnt even bother to help john even a little bit just by cleaning up.
And I’m extremely disturbed by people who are defending the narrator. His friend could have killed himself for all we know and thats why his parents left as well. If only he had a true friend who would have helped him instead of one who was afraid he was possessed.
Yass! The entire episode, I was thinking, why didn't he clean the house... he is your friend, your going to be living there, but nope played video games for hours...
i thrive on cleaning lmao so a mouldy house is a project !!!! but also if his friend is having a depressive episode the least you can do is like clean up a bit and make things a bit easier
he was possibly depressed, causing him to leave food out since he hadn’t had any human interaction. The mold must’ve gotten to his system, since further looking into the comments of mold, psycosis, etc. i believe that mold infection must have gotten into his lungs causing him to get into this zombie-like state. The possible cause for his pale skin and his intense weight loss was most like the cause of lack of motivation. As someone who has suffered from it i must say that this is true. But not to shit on the main character, he could’ve called someone, and maybe gotten authorities to check him out. He could’ve possibly brought him to the hospital to check him for any infections. Stay safe guys

hey y'all! i found the link to the actual post on reddit, and i read through the whole thing. there's some stuff shane and ryan left out/paraphrased (im sure just for editing's sake, or other extra bits that didn't really feel needed for the story). i've compiled some info here for you guys because there's some discourse going on in the comments that may be dissolved with extra details (timestamps that coincide with ryan's storytelling included) № 1. ( 7:51 ) "Despite the state of things, and being left alone by my friend. I hadn't made any changes to the plan of living there. *I set my stuff down and started getting ready to do some cleaning,* but Dave stopped me and started point out things I hadn't noticed up to this point. The layer of dust was even an undisturbed across the entire living room and kitchen area except for the thin track from the front door to the hallway, leading to the back of the trailer." i put in bold what i meant for you to focus on, but he did honestly intend to clean up a bit, not like he immediately decided nothing was wrong and started playing WoW dkjhsdk № 2. ( 14:47 ) "My sickly looking, clearly depressed friend laying on his disgusting bed, paying not attention to me at all. John was not an intimidating guy, short, kinda chubby and baby faced, but in my gut I was afraid of him." here, the narrator mentions that john is clearly depressed, giving a bit more credit to the rational explanation rather than demonizing mental illness (at least early on into the story) you guys also have to remember that the narrator at this point has gotta be like, 18/19. he's a kid. it was 2009, and this was clearly not something he had ever seen before. this is kinda all i got for you guys but here's the link to the original story if you wanna check it out for yourselves: www.reddit.com/r/Thetruthishere/comments/dn3nlt/i_think_something_got_my_friend/
he could've called an ambulance or a mental health wellness check--instead he just played WoW. also, if he thought that john was 'clearly depressed', why was he afraid of him? i know he was just a kid, but he said himself that john was probably sick, and instead of ignoring that, the narrator and dave should've GOTTEN him help. the narrator demonizing a very obviously depressed dude just doesn’t sit right with me.
@@rainrahman4024 I agree, but maybe when he was writing this story (if it real) he thought about what he saw and then came to the conclusion that he was sick.

I feel like the guy who wrote this is just trying to justify the fact that he did nothing to help his friend who was mentally ill by making it sound supernatural
I don't think it's as malicious as that. It sounds like the narrator was young and ignorant. It's terrible that he was raised in a world were "demons" was a more reasonable response than mental health condition. He didn't even have the curiosity to look up what might be wrong or know about resources that could help and I think that's more a failing of his education and environment than a character flaw.
@@maryvon8518 I agree, not everyone has ever witnessed what depression looks like. I'm in my 30s and I didn't realize this has anything to do with manic depression until I looked in the comments...
How tf is he responsible for his friends state of mind? There is nothing to justify here, because the narrator did what any normal person would do in that situation.
I know this is 5 months ago and you might have already found it, but they did do a D&D campaign. It was called SD&D&D: Social Distancing and Dungeons and Dragons.
Assuming this actually happened, it sounds like a mixture of drugs, severe depression, and a mental breakdown/psychotic episode. I’ve seen friends that are normally active and friendly turn into radically different people after excessive drug use. I don’t get paranormal vibes from this, but it’s definitely creepy.
Yeah, drugs don't even need to be a part of this. There's way more than 1 kind of depression; several of the more-well-known kinds that everyone says are "so hard" to deal with (and they are!) are a piece of cake to deal with and recover from, *compared to* a lot of the lesser-known kinds. I know folks for whom suicidal ideation has been not only normal, but a near-daily occurrence, for multiple *decades*, even with meds and therapy.
I was always too scared to click on these videos cuz I get too scared at night. But when I saw that ryan was narrating it and was talking to shane, I felt really relieved. Some of my friends dont like Unsolved. they say it isnt scary because ryan and shane are always joking around, but that's what I find appealing about this channel. Delivering spooks without freaking giving me new phobias.
I love scary stories, but not being afraid. They’re so much more interesting than some happy story. But I get scared easily so I love everything Shane and Ryan put out.
That is all I could think through this whole story. I'm so glad that speaking about mental health has become more open in recent years. I hope that it will help people realize if they come across a friend in similar condition that they need help and are not some paranormal spooky ghost or what ever.
I'm so glad the entire comment section is saying what I was thinking, which is that this guy sounds really depressed and in need of help. I hope he got the help he needed

True. I would've noped the fuck out and then called for a welfare check and/or medical help, because at least a person like that could be helped by a psych ward. Not saying that in a demeaning way at all, but saying that they can't care for themself and need urgent medical/psychological care. And if it is something spooky or supernatural, then hey, I wouldn't be outside the trailer alone anymore, but would have responders doing a welfare check to help figure it out.
This guy is a bad friend. If I came to a friend's house, especially after only three months away and saw it in this state I would be EXTREMELY worried for my friend. I would also start cleaning. Right then, not play video games and ignore the situation. I have had my mental illness put me in a place like this. People who don't deal with it first hand (have it or are close to someone who does) don't know how much it can change a person and how quick it can happen. I have had my house rapidly become a shithole, I have been the zombie. Mental illness can be a horrific beast. I hope the guy's family left with him to get him some help.
I feel like this is more the narrator being young and ignorant. He probably doesn’t know what any sort of mental illness looks like. And that’s on our terrible public education system. And, like some people, when he encountered this thing he couldn’t recognize, he got scared. Not the best response, but you live and you learn.

Same. I was like this at one point: suicidal, messy, apathetic, my part of the room wasn’t this bad but still not great. My roommate, instead of asking me about it or seeing if I was ok spent the rest of the semester making fun of me on Instagram and snapchat and then threatening me when I confronted him about it. Has anyone ever noticed Ryan is at his happiest when talking about ghosts and murders. But get him in front of a puppet and he looks miserable. Ryan is the ultimate undercover Goth.
On one hand, I gotta agree that this guy probably was going through some deep crap, but on the other, I can't blame the guy for getting spooked. The sheer shock would be enough, but the dude standing in the hallway? For no reason? For hours?? I'm sorry, that's terrifying. The guy did try to find out what's up with him after leaving, so it's not like he abandoned him, but still, I don't blame him for leaving the house
I just think he should’ve called for a mental health/wellness check when he left the house. because he said he tried to later but his friend left town, but if he did it immediately he still would’ve been there
I agree with you completely!!!! Everyone is saying he should’ve done more but he literally said he was scared!!!!! He did more than enough by checking with friend and family
yes, I completely agree! I feel like people are being very irrational saying things like 'he should've talked to him' etc. any normal person would be terrified. they were probably in a state of shock, and built up panic, and a lot of people overlook that
I agree with you too. I think fear really prevents people from making rational decisions, and I think it’s important to take into context that this was back in 2009, when people were less aware of depression and other mood disorders. Apparently, OP did consider that his friend was going through depression in the original story (it got cut out here), and he did check up with his roomate’s parents and friends to see if how he was doing, so it wasn’t like he abandoned his friend completely. In addition, OP was probably not entirely familiar with depression, so he wasn’t able to handle this situation ideally. I hope his friend has gotten the help he needed, and is doing better now. Edit: I think the saddest and scariest part about this story is the lack of awareness of mood disorders and other mental illnesses, leading to OP’s misunderstandings and his friend not getting the help he needed in the story.
This really sounds like a depressive episode. When I fall into one, I can barely get out of bed to go to the bathroom, I have to force myself to eat, I don’t clean up after myself, and I can’t even talk. I grunt just like the friend to let my family know I’m still there, I can barely move, and once again, I don’t eat. The hole could’ve been part of a manic episode, like others have been saying. Depression can wreck you and it’s very dangerous. I can’t imagine dealing with it back when being neurodivergent wasn’t acceptable.
Ryan keeps asking what John was living on for months if all the food was rotten, but the obvious answer is delivery. Get food delivered, eat some of it, put the rest in the fridge for later, forget about it. That's why the fridge was full top-to-bottom with rotten food, as well. He kept putting his leftovers in the fridge thinking "i'll eat this later" and then not eating it. The problem got out of hand because of the depression cycle of going "i don't have the energy for this right now, i'll deal with it later", problem keeps getting bigger, requiring more energy to tackle, which you never have so you'll deal with it later, "later" never comes. The narrator was pretty young by the sound of it and probably didn't really know how to handle the situation, especially if he was totally unfamiliar with depression and how it can manifest. I'm betting that him and Dave sitting down to play video games was an attempt to settle in and try to make things feel normal while trying to figure out what he should do about the situation, possibly trying to decide whether he should confront John over the state of the house or try to invite him to game with them (again to make things feel normal). I'm sure he and Dave were discussing these things while playing, it just didn't make it into the story. other things to note: - the hole would look like something came up from below if John was pulling at the floor materials from above. it also could have been him underneath the trailer just drilling a hole through the floor. probably a manic episode, as others have commented. this element of the story is totally unremarkable imo. - if anybody's wondering how John was able to stand living there when the smell was so strong, prolonged exposure to strong smells leads to olfactory fatigue or "noseblindness" - basically if your house stinks you'll eventually stop being able to smell it, even though your nose works fine and you can still smell everything else. - the "holy shit that's a bear" level fear instinct was almost certainly an uncanny valley sort of gut reaction - seeing someone he used to know looking and acting _so_ completely alien that his brain couldn't reconcile the two, plus probably feeling like John's behavior was unpredictable since _nothing_ about anything felt right. - John standing in the hallway watching them for hours could have been anything really, but my guess is he was in a depression spiral and didn't realize just how long he'd been standing there staring at them while mired in his own self-destructive thoughts.
Poor John. the whole time it just really seemed to me like he was going through a deep depression. The part where he just stood there and stared at them could have just been sleepwalking which can be caused by stress or fatigue. As for the hole in the floor... racoons. LITERALLY JUST RACOONS.
Old comment but with his mental and physical state declining so quickly he was extremely isolated and probably just missed his friends? Like how we stare at our dogs or pups while they’re sleeping, watching over them

I definitely think drugs may have had a part in this. I had a roommate before that was addicted to opioids (I didn't know till after I moved out) but he kinda fit the same bill as this guy. Not to the same degree but the drugs definitely took the life out of his eyes and I was always uneasy around him.

This helps bring a social/friendly joviality aspect to it that helps keep my brain calm. So thank you very much for these. Its helping me enjoy horror again.
if he was ever in a manic state, he might have started pulling the floor boards up himself, or someone else said that if there was some sort of mold in the house, the floor might be weakened and his leg could have fallen through, and then by pulling it back out the wood could get twisted up. if that did happen and his leg was somehow wounded and not cared for, that could explain the rotting smell
I had a depressive + mood swing episode. I broke stuff. Heavy glass objects which were known to never break, turned out it actually breaks if u tried hard enough. My parents got strong ass floors, cheers to that, it didn't break. Only the objects broke. So this dude probably threw something heavy, not thinking twice, mid-rage, that broke the floor. BUT it didn't fall all the way down. It got stuck. So sooner or later he decides to just get it out of floor. He pulls it back up. Hence the floor's wooden edges on the broken spot, were pointing upwards.
Someone else mentioned this could be catatonia. Catatonic symptoms are common in mood disorders, depression, schizophrenia and many other disorders. If he was experiencing a manic episode of any of these disorders, its very possible he did it himself.

Yeah it's weird how they acted
and the mold cpould have caused health problems why didnt they even try to clean up
Yes that true but on the other hand he couldn't have done anything to help that person in that moment.

Me the entire story: “Damm, this guy just seems really depressed.”
I’ve had a similar situation to this happen in my family. But he lives with his son who we visit regularly and he’s slowly becoming the uncle I knew.
recovery is always possible
As somebody who has been depressed, and grew up in a nasty house because my mom was depressed, this was my first thought!
Me, throughout the whole story: "Okay, I get that this guy has depression to a severe degree...But what the fuck was that hole in the floor about?"
@@Neptune01104 me with multiple mental illnesses like: 👁💧👄💧👁
I've had major depression, where I didn't bathe or brush my teeth a couple weeks at a time, and the only reason I ate was because my dad would bring me a plate of dinner all cut up in bite sized pieces sometimes.

When you are not a good writter you tend to left holes on your story, that's pretty much what happened here
All of the comments agree that this is some sort of psychosis or deep depressive episode, but blame the friend for not doing more.
Same, I’m liking this comment so more people can see it
Tbh as someone who has dealt with depression since long before I was 18 years old, it's sad to see the way the narrator immediately villainized his friend's clear mental illness and treated him like he was a monster. Kind of goes to show how stigmatized mental illness really is in the minds of neurotypical people. Clearly we as a society need to do more in educating young people about what mental illness is like and how to treat people with depression with empathy rather than fear. It's a sad story all around tbh.
Thank you.

I think I agree that the roommate is depressed or has some sort of mental health issue and I was also kind of thrown for a loop by the hole, but if it's true that the friend said it looked like it was made from the outside, then I really don't know what to think.
Yuppppp... I also feel like he might've been struggling with some kind of addiction along with depression/bipolar/schizophrenia or similar... his "disappearance" could've been him being sent to some kind of residential treatment program, and stigma surrounding mental illness and drug abuse could've kept his family from extrapolating on it. could’ve been a toxic mold based illness. when you’re exposed to it, it can cause depression, brain flog, anxiety, attention difficulties, disorientation, appetite/ mood swings, numbness, vertigo, and insomnia, etc - which could explain why he had delayed responses, was starring at the ceiling in his room, standing in the middle of hallway, as well as why he wasn’t eating and wasn’t taking care of himself or his place 🤷🏻♀️
This is an interesting angle, could even explain the hole if he was trying to remove a mold spot and inhaling a bunch in the process. To me it feels like he must have had preexisting mental health issues, but something like that certainly could've pushed things over the edge and triggered a spiral like what's described here
Jazmine Pineda this is so smart omg what a detective. This is literally probably what happened.

The friend was catatonically depressed and in the midst of an episode of sorts possibly mixed with a fungal infection due to all the dust and mould reducing his oxygen intake hence the "zombie" like actions and lack of talking. The hole was likely made by an animal intrigued by the smell digging under the trailer. As for OP, he says he felt such a strong sense of dread and "primal fear" when near him but decided to... stay in his house overnight playing video games? He probably tried to second guess himself since John technically hadn’t done anything creepy at that point and just wanted to keep him company and be a good friend. But getting stared at while he slept was the last straw and spooked him too much to feel safe staying.
My problem is why he just decided to sit down and play on the computer?? Why aren’t they cleaning up the house?? Especially when he is planning on living there again!!!!

@@jdonovan74 maybe they were seeing things for a significant amount of that, maybe it felt like longer than it was cause they were so scared, maybe he saw them staring at him and he got scared too and froze up.
@@jdonovan74 I get the feeling that the author was exaggerating for the sake of the story when he said "hours". However, if it was depression, the whole staring off into space can be described as an episode of disassociation, which can sometimes look like daydreaming or spacing out to another person, so it's not impossible for it to still be about depression.
me too, I literally said out loud "no I'm sad"
“I’m thinking zombie”
“I’m thinking slug person”
I’m thinking depressed
Hopefully his friend got help.
i agree
What about the hole in the floor? :0 If something broke through from below, that doesn't scream aliens or depression.

Love how the narrator even stated himself that John could’ve had a psychotic breakdown or an addiction to drugs, but proceeds to choose to believe that it’s something paranormal instead.

and didn’t even try to talk to him at all... like he just opened his bedroom door and got too freaked out to just ask him how he’s doing. Asshole
he was possibly depressed, causing him to leave food out since he hadn’t had any human interaction.

Ryan is batman :)
Yeah ikr , if I had a friend 😁
I feel like this is more the narrator being young and ignorant. He probably doesn’t know what any sort of mental illness looks like. And that’s on our terrible public education system. And, like some people, when he encountered this thing he couldn’t recognize, he got scared. Not the best response, but you live and you learn.
@@sydneysingh4244 Yeah, this was over 10 years ago and he was 18-19ish.
Mostly I was shocked that he sat there and played games instead of doing anything about the mess. The fear I can understand, it was the playing games and sitting there I thought made him a bad friend.
Horrible situation. Reach out to your friends if they’re like this.

“I’m thinking zombie.”
I’m thinking John ain’t taking his meds.

@@recoil53 A truly traumatizing moment for all of us
Ryan: Zombie?
Shane: Slug?
Me: Hella depressed?
Hotel: Trivago
Good joke but the question goes first.
I'm sure he and Dave were discussing these things while playing, it just didn't make it into the story.
other things to note:
- the hole would look like something came up from below if John was pulling at the floor materials from above. it also could have been him underneath the trailer just drilling a hole through the floor. probably a manic episode, as others have commented. this element of the story is totally unremarkable imo.
As for the hole in the floor... racoons. LITERALLY JUST RACOONS.
exactly! Moulding food smells stronger so it’ll attract animals.
Old comment but with his mental and physical state declining so quickly he was extremely isolated and probably just missed his friends? Like how we stare at our dogs or pups while they’re sleeping, watching over them

As a current movie theatre worker, it hurts

This is scary /because/ of how realistic it seems. It truly was some mentally ill or drug addiction thing and its scary how different he became to the point where his friend didn't even recognize his. I 100% believe this story and don't think anything weird was going on, it's just chilling how unsettling the atmosphere is.
I definitely think drugs may have had a part in this. I had a roommate before that was addicted to opioids (I didn't know till after I moved out) but he kinda fit the same bill as this guy. Not to the same degree but the drugs definitely took the life out of his eyes and I was always uneasy around him.
@@juliacary7013 my uncle had an alcohol addiction. When my grandparents came to intervene his house was very similar to this and he did a lot of laying in bed just like that. He's since recovered but I regret thinking that John didn't get help like he needed before he dissapeared.
@@skittykay my guess is that "John moved away" was his parents' way of saying "we had John institutionalized" for mental health treatment, but they didn't want to explain that to some random friends who came calling. It's possible they or John were embarrassed by the mental health issue and wanted to conceal the truth from friends.
Wouldn’t you assume your friend was horribly depressed? I would be so concerned and would immediately begin cleaning. I couldn’t imagine just chilling in that mess and I would feel like my friend really needed help
That's what I thought. At least call an ambulance or something.
Right? I know this is a “scary story” but it’s obviously mental illness? Not to be that person but it’s kind of mocking depression, in my opinion. I love watcher, Shane, and Ryan but idk how to feel about this one..
@@ValonaGrace I think it’s safe to assume that they didn’t know it was possibly depression because it was posted on a paranormal reddit. Plus there was things that indicated it was other things that weren’t depression.

Are we sure these guys just weren't experiencing mold poisoning? That place was probably infested with spores judging from all the food just left lying around and made them misinterpreted someone going through either severe addiction or a mental breakdown.
This is a good diagnosis!!
Great idea! Was also thinking about the hole, maybe he dropped something heavy, it gets caught/wedged and then pulled it back out again, hence the wood pulling upwards. Obv a depressive episode/mental break....but who plays world of warcraft in that situation?! Or sleeps in there instead of the car? Tsk demons can be depressed too 🥺
If everything was moldy and untouched/dusty it means he hasn’t eaten for like a month or else something must’ve been new. Literally y’all make zero sense thinking it was just depression and drugs
@@snappiepappie9899 there was no "settled dust" on the handle, meaning it was opened. And hell, when the author says he could barely look at it cause he was gagging, I don't think he did a thorough inspection, ya feel?
Like if there was say 40% rotten food or 60% or 80% would you be able to tell? From a quick glance where likely a lot is in tupperware, how'd you know if "100%" is rotten. It would most likely be how he remembers it from the smell, but it's likely John was just depressed and couldn't be bothered to clear out his old food.
Besides, there's nothing to stop John from just ordering like take out or snack food or whatever, as a few other commenters have pointed out, depression can do wack stuff to your hunger/appetite, with one commenter saying in their depressive periods they lived of like a single honey bun
@@snappiepappie9899 my room was like that for probably a month till I was put on medication, I couldn't finish my food and I had no energy to clean up anything either
Nah you're not. It's probably anxiety for you, I have anxiety too.
These episodes really help because I love horror but my anxiety has gotten to a point where on their own it's too much, even knowing when they are fake. Nobody:
Shane Madej: A slug.
i’m the 666th like hehe
We know he's depressed, but no one is bringing up the freaking hole in the floor???
Hes obviously a slug person.
if he was ever in a manic state, he might have started pulling the floor boards up himself, or someone else said that if there was some sort of mold in the house, the floor might be weakened and his leg could have fallen through, and then by pulling it back out the wood could get twisted up. if that did happen and his leg was somehow wounded and not cared for, that could explain the rotting smell
No depression. It's a fake story.

I think the narrator got scared simply because he didn't recognize his friend. But to call him animalistic is rude.
"normal" people when they see someone whos chronically catatonically depressed would probably be scared.
@@amp4105 Well, we don't know unless we are in that sort of a situation. Maybe he's depressed. Maybe he's not. Because if the narrator truly felt fear in his gut feeling then maybe something is really wrong. And I think you should always follow your intuition.
