- There is a lot of structural engineer software, and I will be answering the heated debate on what software does a structural engineer need to know? Although it is important to know how to use the software it is more important to know, what structural design software you should use in each situation. Knowing the different types of software structural engineering available and when to use each is more important than ever.

Thanks for your content! Idea for future videos - general tips&tricks for modeling a 3D concrete structure in any FEM software (walls, beams, plates, beams) - boundary conditions, coupling beams, avoiding numerical errors, etc...

Good list! Don’t forget about the FEM giants such as ansys or abaqus. Although they are not used much with practicing engineers, research and defense engineers rely greatly on them. Great video.
Hi Eric, I did talk about abaques but I cut it out during the edit. Throught that is was most structural engineer never get upto something so complicated

Yes bro structural engineer is the skill for smart people. Structural engineer is always challenges.
I have used ETABS for doing structural analysis, CSI Safe for RC slab design and check deflection, Adapt builder for PT slab design and check. For structural elements such as Beam column I use etabs and compare result with Spcolum, MathCAD 15/Prime. And also Midas design plush. if I can give any advice that will help you for life is to dedicate time and create your own spreadsheets, in excel or on mtc, you can buy premade sheets but you won't know them and why they decided to use certain methods and leave out certain others, do your own and keep improving it and it will help you throughout your career.

at least here in New York, USA for buildings, it's moving towards Revit and RAM with Bluebeam being the documentation and pdf coordination/markups go-to.

I gotta be honest Brendan, I use Spacegass plate elements for complex local analysis, I just can't get past the UI of strand 7 - hopefully the new update makes it better
Hi Oliver, I have used spacegas to do that too. I have to be honest too, i use spacegas to model the structure, then export it into strand7.

One of the issues I have with programs, for example like SAP, is that they model the completed structure. With concrete structures, certain loads, particularly dead-loads are "locked in" at various stages of construction. Therefore, composite section properties may not apply to certain loads, for example, a heavy concrete wall sitting on a concrete slab the was cast earlier. This may result in minor stress inaccuracies in many cases but not all.
Hi Craig, agreed wished in place modelling can cause inaccurate stress distribution, and in most cases it will be small. You can create stagged models to over come this.
Ideally, the software you use should allow for staged construction. For bridges, this is pretty key. Otherwise you need multiple models, and sum the stresses.

So what I am getting is that one must know basic hand calcs and concepts about structural properties before jumping into any software.
Hi Deepak, Correct you need to know what you think the answer will be before modelling as it will give you an idea of if the model is behaving correctly.
Hello Brendan. In my opinion for the seismic structural analysis Opensees is the best software package. However, I know this software is not commonly used due to its absence of Graphic interface. I have used other softwares packages like those of the CSI company, midas civil and robot structural. Within these SWs my favorite is SAP2000.

Opensees is too much for engineers in Australia considering the engineering level here is extremely low especially when it comes to earthquake analysis. It is like you are asking engineers here to use perform 3D that we did in Asia.
In India we use staad pro and etab only
Sir, Have you heard of the software called TEKLA structures? ( Detailing software, mainly used for Steel structures).... Please let me know more about this professionally
Tekla is worth learning, as most of the fabricators use this .
Great content Brendan. As a follow up question however, with respect to some of the software mentioned, how much of the Finite Element Method does one need to know in structural engineering?
It depends on how complex your structures are. I use it on a weekly/monthly basis. but i would know people who wouldn't use it. It is important to know generally how FEA works, so if you using a programe like RamConcept you know what flaws it may have.
You should try Midas Gen for building.
I have been meaning to try it will need to check it out.

so there really isnt one SW package that does everything - instead there are many different packages that could be used depending on the design requirements and conditions. did i get that right? thanks for the interesting vid,
Hi Alian, there are packages that do moat things but typically I have found packages that are Jack of all trades but they are master of none. So programs focusing on one thing are typically better
I know sap2000 and Etabs, is it a wise choice to learn SAFe for slab and foundation design as all the three softwares are compatible with each other, rather than learning RAM concept for slab design, which is a Bentley software.
I have found that Safe isn't as user-friendly as ramconcept. Also, the cross linking isn't something that is to import in today age you can right api scripts that allow you to cross link.
Can I request a video on online degrees for structural engineering and their relevance in the industry? May be your take on that. Thanks!
Hi Avinash, it is hard to know if a online degree is good. But I can do a video on online courses that will help improve different aspects.

Hi Martin as a student you not need to focus on software, study more structural mechanics. you can learn the software when you are working.

I don’t want to mention the company but years ago they had a marketing brochure, and in it they said they have interoperability with SPACEGRASS. Haha good old auto spell I suppose.

Hi construction, revit is a documation software, there are pugins that you can bolt onto the software but they are typically only to extract the geometry out of revit
There is analysis in cloud and if it's a simple design you can add your loadings, combinations, releases etc. and send it to cloud for analysis but the one software revit comes with as a standard package is robot structural analysis. Now you can in theory have everything but running the analysis in revit and use robot literally just to run the analysis and design. Detailed connections of almost any kind you can design in revit and or robot. I am saying almost, as i couldn't manage to create connections between curved beams. The question is also valid because regardless of whether you are in Oz, UK or US , the architects who funnel most of your work are using Revit or Archicad. So like it or not, revit is in your face. So naturally the common sense dictate to start with the software that works hand in hand with your collaborators. It frustrates me big time you can't do masonry design in robot but when most architects i work with are in revit, robot is the go to software with all its multitudes of shortfalls purely because of the collaboration aspect.
What is your assessment of ProtaStructure?

Hi Abhishek, haven't used Tekla too much mainly due to it price. It is good for steel detailing.

Hi Cameron, haven't used it I will look into it. what do you think about it?
@@BrendanHasty It's great for quick less complex models. I love it for its section properties section to get the properties of built-up members or adding to existing members for reinforcement, without having to do all the tedious geometric math by hand. Although there are some properties that it does not output and you still need to get those by hand.

Hello sir, i know my question will sound unrelated to the topic you are discussing but as you are from this field you know a lot of things. My question is which is the best University in Canada to do masters in structural engineering? On internet every University rating is good that's why I don't trust them, and also what do you think is it ok to do masters in structural engineering because i will invest alot and iam expecting it to return in 1-2 years.

Hi Annent, typically you want to try for the top university in your area, some may have a good rating but in the end, may be hard to get that first position. after you get your foot in the door your university doesn’t matter. as for masters in Canada do you need this to work as an engineer, if not I would recommend starting to work you learn a lot on the job, you can go back and do your masters later when you work out what you want to focus on.
The University of Calgary traditionally has been one of the best universities in Canada for concrete design.

@@BrendanHasty All three were also integrated with Revit plugin. So far in our high rise projects (upto 350m) we are able to manage with ETABS and safe. For cold formed steel SAP2000 is working well, but need lot of upgrade for CFS. We are not into bridge projects btw.

@AK Projects A lot of the software is common to Australian design offices and some are only sold locally. that could be the reason why you may not have heard of them.
I doubt Brendan is getting any sponsorship as some of the software he mentions compete against each other in the same market. Its a great list! I personally use most of them myself.
