    That fight scene between Aang and Zuko in the market area is so beautifully choreographed! I loved it. I can't get over how great the bending effects are. I like the direction they are going for Sokka's character. Excited for you to see what's coming up!

    I hate how they changed Katara from this fiery, no nonsense girl to someone who is meek and submissive, especially where Sokka is concerned.

    • @JJJOG-tc9jv
      @JJJOG-tc9jv 6 месяцев назад +8

      I agree to an extent, they did change her character a little bit concerning how her emotions are expressed. But Katara in the original's fiery outbursts of rage was something that only really works well in the cartoon. At the same time I do agree it would be more entertaining and true to her character to see her more expressive

      Am I the only one that thought Katara was a bitch in the cartoon? If they made her the same, I’d feel like bitch slapping her, even though that’s totally wrong. But still, in the live action, Katara’s personality mirrored her mom and gran-gran, which I get.

      Spoiler warning ahead:
      I love the parallel between Azula and Katara in this first season. It’s like the writers borrowed from Aang and Zuko and focused on Katara and Azula’s passion towards getting things done. They are finding themselves in season one, but I hope to see them in season two as we know them from the animated series.

      Nah I like this Katara better. She is in fact submissive, in a secluded village, when she not only cant waterbend properly, she also cant do waterbend publicly. Its tied to her emotions as well. They are trying tp hide her from the FN. And we see her growth as they travel as well her matery of waterbending also grew strong with her as it is tied with her emotions.

      OK this has been discussed many many times. The reason why they changed Bumi was because think about it, would a silly Bumi work as well in a more mature themed adaption? I think it makes sense for them to change his character to a more angry guy cause I feel like it makes sense that he would be angry that his friend left for 100 years and fighting a war would also mess you up.

    • @jacobd1984
      @jacobd1984 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@BeeKee404 It would be a tough sell for sure to have Bumi be as silly as in the cartoon, but they could have found a middle ground between the two. It didn’t work for me because, A. This Aang didn’t actually leave, he just went to clear his head (and Bumi knows this) and B. Bumi has a change of heart with the kind of speed that we would have seen in the original cartoon. The writing wouldn’t pick a lane.

    Holding out for Haru in Season 2~! Maybe they'll merge him into a S2 storyline like how these episodes merge things. I have mixed feelings on Bumi. On one hand, I wish he was more silly and cuckoo but he also became something I wish the cartoon always had: someone who was around at the time Aang disappeared and felt abandoned.
    When I stopped critiquing every detail and comparing it to the animated series, I started to realize I loved it much more. But I agree with Katara. She's really the only character that I didn't get enough "Katara" from but I still liked her.
    I thoroughly enjoyed Sokka and Zuko, and of course Aang was fun. There will little moments with Aang's acting where I was like, "Hmm". But overall I enjoyed him. Azula, Ty Lee, and Mai I also enjoyed. I'm excited to see them more in Book 2.
    And yes to Jet

    I think it's interesting they take time to explain why Jet actions are not his fault but don't extend the same courtesy to The Mechanist. One action is to harm others even the innocent all to settle his own hatred. While the other is a desperation to protect someone he cares about. Jet is a terrorist and a murder and it cannot be excuse just cause the writers don't want Katara to be wrong.

    I’m sorry Grey gave us an amazing Azula, no one can compare lol. It tbh this season feels like team Zuko and Iroh and they kinda ditched team avatar, also they did Katara dirty. If you watch the actors during interviews they are so much like the characters in the show let their personalities shine in the show! This is also another reason why the original writers left because Netflix changed their show so much and they had what was said “creative differences” I think they should of just said we don’t like this you can’t make a show 😂

    The City of Omashu looks amazing. I like the casting of Jet and the Freedom Fighters (Pipsqueak, The Duke, Long Shot, and Smellerbee). As well the casting of Teo and Sai, who made their first appearance in episode 17, the Northern Air Temple.
    I like how in the live action that Katara trauma to her losing her mother is a mental block on her not getting the Waterwhip. And I like how she must overcome that with remembering the best thing about her mother that she was able to get over the hurdle.
    The Aang and Zuko fight was great as well the hilarious as Zuko getting hit by the woman 😂 Cabbage man getting his cabbage destroyed moment was a great moment. As well the Katara, Jet and Freedom Fighters fight with the Firenation spies were great, too. As Iroh helped Zuko escape as Aang is captured by Omashu soldiers.
    I like how we get a flashback of Iroh at the funeral of his son Lu Ten. It is interesting that we get an interaction with Iroh and Ozai. But we never got it in the animated series.
    Katara and Sokka go through the secret tunnels only to stumble upon some carefree traveling bards Chong, Lily, Moku from the Cave of Two Lovers episode. Which was a hilarious and cool moment. We got the introduction of the Badgermoles.
    The interaction between Iroh and the Earh Nation soldier was interesting because I got his anger towards Iroh for losing his brother. It is sad because in war, there will always be casualties in which both men are similar positions because both he and Iroh lost a family member, too.
    I like the Zuko and Iroh vs. the Earth Nation soldier fight in episode 7 of season one, which was great. As well Zuko making a decision earlier in the episode who to go after between his uncle or the Avatar which as well is a callback from episode 7. In which unfortunately leaves Iroh getting stabbed. As we get a flashback of Zuko being banished by his father with the fresh scar as the two begin the search for the Avatar. The Aang and Bumi fight was great as well. But anyway I hope you have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing Sophia Phan.

  • @guiltyflygon
    @guiltyflygon 6 месяцев назад +4

    I think you're right on the money to pin the writing and directing for a lot of the issues people have with this show. Whether you enjoy it or not really seems to depend on your tolerance for clunky dialogue and weird directorial descisions like having everyone's lines be so snappy and unnatural sounding.
    And it's unfortunate because I did grow to appreciate these actors over the course of the show for the few moments they each seemed to actually get to play their character through the writing, and I really like a lot of the concepts.
    Lu-ten's funeral is probably my favorite scene in the show... Conceptually. Seeing this moment where Iroh really comes to understand that Zuko has a heart is great. However, showing it so early is a weird choice for sure, as I think it makes Zuko feel way too nice for him still being a major antagonist. Also, showing it right after Iroh has his smarmy line at that Earth Kimgdom guy makes it really hard to want to sympathize with him (which is bad because we're talking about IROH here). And a minor thing, its so funny to me that Zuko is pouring his heart out to Iroh while three random extras look on in the background. Could that not have been a private moment? Lol.
    On a broad scale, I dont think they were wrong to combine the plotlines of the Nortern Air Temple and Jett with Omashu, even if they are my least favorite episodes of the show. It almost works, but it feels like the script was definitely tampered with by the studio.
    As an example, in Warriors, Zhao asks Suki's mom if they have had any visitors and she says no... But Sokka is standing right there in full water tribe gear lol. Of course, if at one point in the script he was going to be in Kyoshi armor like the show then it might make sense...
    Similarly with these episodes, it really feels like Omashu was already going to be conquered by the fire nation when the gaang showed up, but they changed it late into development without considering how that would effect everything. Jett wanting to blow up the king, the mechanist being afraid of the fire nation hurting his son, even Bumi's stark change in demeanor from the show all make more sense if the Fire Nation have already taken over. Heck, even havung Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee featuring in these episodes makes way more sense!
    When an inevitable season 2 does come about I hope these issues are addressed, because I really do want to root for this show, despite my pretty sour feelings towards it at the moment.

    I feel like the live action merged Bumi’s character with the old fisherman from “The Storm” episode in the animated show, which explains his jadedness. While Bumi having this trait could be seen as more realistic, I prefer the animated show’s portrayal since it subverts audiences’ expectations when a character who has experienced war and loss to be joyful and kind, a type of subversiveness in line with Bumi’s character.

    @BeeKee404 6 месяцев назад +7

    I will say, a gripe I have about the adaption is them taking out the Imprisoned episode cause personally Haru is one of my favorite side/guest characters and I feel like that episode was a big character arc for Katara. I've learned to accept it though cause maybe they can work it in season 2. I also personally don't totally mind the way Katara is portrayed cause like with Bumi, I feel like her hot headed temper might not have worked as well in live action and just look weird or not that entertaining and she might come off as unlikable. I can tell she has hints of it though especially around Sokka. Not saying I don't want to see more anger from Katara but maybe it's something that can be built up as the series goes on. Thinking on it, I'm wondering if it might be an interesting take to have her be containing a lot of pent up anger inside her that she will eventually just explode at some point. Maybe around Toph 😂

    The Ozai being hidden thing is more of a logistics thing. For a voice actor, having his characters face not being shown it's actually even better because he can show off how good he is, and they can play off the amazing actor they cast to do Ozai's voice. In a live action there's no way a super a list actor is gonna be fine with no face shown (it's why in superhero movies their masks always break... I mean spiderman had his mask off how many times, or ripped half way, and yet no one ever knew his identity? lol), and no way a studio is gonna pay his price and not have his face shown to promote the show. Ozai's actor would basically have to be part of the series for 6 years of filming and never show his face lol

    With the number of times they have characters confronting Aang about running away--especially everything with Bumi--it makes me wonder if the decision to have Aang NOT actually run away was made much later in the writing/production process. I could absolutely see that being that being the result of last-minute corporate meddling, and it being too late to rewrite (or even re-shoot) large sections of the script.

    • @casualpotato44
      @casualpotato44 6 месяцев назад

      Imo, nah that's not the case. The writing and directing throughout the show is subpar. It's not Shyamalan remake bad, but still subpar. Dialogue is repetitive and talks down to the audience. All three of our main characters are watered down versions. The show made deliberate attempts to make them "not problematic". Katara isn't motherly nagging, no feminine rage. Her sole devlopment is being a better bender, which is already missing a point of her character, but they also screwed her being strong arc. Sokka's sexism arc and strategizing removed. They mentioned once here in Omashu that he has an engineer's mind, but fails to pay it off at any point after.
      There are also other contradictions like Katara saying to Jet here that she gets her strength from her. Then in the next episode she says something like, "well, Jet did help me a little bit/significantly"

    I really liked how much the weaved episodes together, as they just couldn’t do as many episodic plots. I also think there’s a super subtle nod to The Great Divide with how Katara & Sokka fight (might be a bit of a reach, but that was a main plot of that episode).

    I agree, I thought Iroh was totally smug while the victim of his war crimes was rightfully yelling at him. I thought it was really cool to be confronted with that, also as viewers, and I didn't like Iroh in that moment.
    If they end up leaving that as it is, as if Iroh was based for pointing out that war changes people lol while the guy is emotionally relating that his brother died due to Iroh's actions, I don't like it. If they end up playing it as Iroh being still at the beginning of his own development regarding confronting his and his family's crimes, I quite like it. In the animated show all of Iroh's growth happens off screen, it could be a cool opportunity to have Zuko and him grow at different paces.

    Some of their changes were iffy, I can see why some people loved it, and some didn't. But almost all the ADDITIONS they did were amazing and super necessary. Like take the intro to episode 3, with the fire rebels. In the cartoon the series ends with all the nations holding hands and singing kumbaya... That's fine for a kids cartoon but irl there's absolutely no way after 100 years of genocide the other nations wouldn't want their revenge, and also the fire nation after 100 years of propaganda wouldn't sit next to them. But now it makes more sense when it's that the citizens were also oppressed by the firelord, constantly being sacrificed for his plans, and their kids (season 3) being taught propaganda over and over. Now the end is more palatable.
    There's several additions too incoming (won't spoil) that are even better than the show. Small things where a single line adds so much, so many layers.
    A few changes worked for me, like Jet was an amazing better change for me. Mostly because these small changes made the show exciting for us who know the show cuz we're like "who's this?" or Azula in the beginning. It makes the show exciting.
    Bumi feels better when you sit with it. One detriment to the show is that with so many changes our brain is constantly trying to understand them, so fans need to like watch it twice. I think at the end he's back to being the Bumi we know, so it's like Aang "woke him up" from his funk, but it's not clear enough for us. But also, as someone who has worked with the elderly, having an old man with dementia have superhuman level strength is funny and goofy in the cartoon but horrifying and scare irl lol. Bumi was behaving very much like an elderly man with war ptsd, but Aang got him out of it. So once I sat with it it's fine. Not "better", but fine.
    The mechanist and his son was a GREAT change for me because it fit the story very well, but only if in season 2 they settle in the air temple and they come back and there's that whole lesson for Aang and others about respecting properties and history while also learning to let go of things. They can still do that and characters can come back, but I hope we didn't lose the air temple being repurposed.
    Zuko and Iroh of course are still the highlight of this series. And you'll see more in coming episodes how they're the best part of the show tbh.

    This episode left a very sour taste in my mouth with Katara scorning Jet's actions on the grounds of his vigilante acts coming from a sense of hatred. They probably meant for her to come off as one wounded survivor of war to another, but the dialogue from her felt very... Disgusting? To compare him to the firebender army was extremely out of pocket. Especially when lining it up to similar current events in our real life. I don't agree with his sense of justice either, it's out of control and hurts innocents, but he is still a misguided kid who survived horrors of war. The fire nation came and ravaged the southern water tribe when Katara was young and while seeing the aftershocks of that day, Jet has had to live that the entirety of growing up, and helping kids who are just like him to this day. His actions are wrong but the comparative blow Katara dealt was just too... Tone deaf? I guess
    Something I really can't understand is any shelving of critique because "this one is suppised to be darker/more mature", when the original show covered a lot of ground regarding war and its effects, trauma, loss, guilt, losing oneself and finding it, etc. So many aspects were clearly conveyed in the original run of AtLA in mature ways. This show is fine for what it is, but I do not feel a sense that it is more mature when characters have to spell everything out instead of showing the audience.

    I already decided I will not be watching seasons two and three as I do not feel like wasting my precious time on literally nobody having character development. Because Sokka is apparently perfect just the way he is. Katara is…NOT Katara which makes me scared as to how they’ll handle Toph. And Aang…Aang doesn’t need to feel guilt or grow into becoming the Avatar because apparently he just accepts it? Also he literally never practices bending at all. Even though he’s the Avatar. And that’s literally his whole job. 💀
    Also Azula is still my least favorite thing about this show. She doesn’t act like a psychopath she’s shown as empathetic and not that tactically brilliant. She acts like a child. Which would be fine. If she wasn’t supposed to be our core villain for the rest of the show. 😭😭 Which ok…you couldn’t have just added that when we finally met her and her full group? Bit by bit by showing her backstory with her mom and everything? Also I felt like making Ozai not favor Azula for her bending just puts less weight towards Zuko and Azula’s rivalry. Because it’s like-why have any animosity if he literally could care less about either of us? Bending ability or not. IDK-maybe if I watch it again I’ll just turn my brain off and think, “Pretty CGI and environments.” 😂😂

    I honestly hope they do Zutara. They’ll probably ruin it, but anything is better than Kataang in a live action setting. I cannot take Aang seriously as a love interest and I’m happy they didn’t try to force the romance.

      @vashtinayagar1325 6 месяцев назад

      @@VeelouC yeah, either way is fine with me. I would actually prefer Zutara to actually stay in the fanfiction realm lol. It’s like if they tried to do Dramione or Harmione in the new Harry Potter show, they would probably ruin it cause it’s been built up as it’s own thing in fanfiction (like the marauders). Honestly, knowing what happens in Korra, Katara should definitely end up alone. Maybe we can have her get together with someone in an epilogue type thing (like Mikasa in Attack on Titan), but I don’t think the show would be able to tackle a relationship with either Zuko or Aang.
