The very idea of the first episode being written by the original creators (Konietzko and Di Martino), and that the first scene is just explanatory dialogue from Sozin to a random earthbender, only to flame shot him afterwards, make me think: "Dude who thought this was a good scene?". And I think that the showrunners later thought: "Hey let's make all episodes have the characters explaining stuff, just like the original writers stated in the first episode".
It's like the James Bond type cliché, where the bad guy keeps explaining the protagonist for like 5 minutes what's exactly his plan, only to be later stomped by the main character.
But in this case, the other way around.
But what I mean, is: That dialogue just doesn't work for explaining the scene and setting the plot.
However, I did like that we see what Sozin did on camera.

You aren't allowed character flaws or story arcs in fiction any more, in fact you can't even have them in real life. All characters must be oven-ready good guys, even the bad guys, and learn absolutely nothing over the course of their journeys so that everyone is included and no one is offended.

    • @petriew2018
      @petriew2018 10 месяцев назад +19

the weird thing to me is that they removed the flaws the characters ultimately grew out of, not only lessening the impact of the character arcs but seemingly axing a strong example of people getting over 'problematic' behavior.... which, uh, that seems like completely contradictory...
like, this doesn't seem to be a case of 'wokeness', and more of fear of the brainlets on the internet who don't have the patience/attention span for an actual story to be told. But they still wanted to keep the payoffs to the arcs they basically killed any point to for fear of offending the existing fans. Leaving a series which, while not terrible, has little to no actual point anymore because the basic equation of setup and payoff is broken by what amounts to spineless writing.
So much of this show has been weirdly dumbed down, yet they keep pushing it as more 'adult'.... because they'll show dead bodies? A major catalyst of the original show's plot was the fire nation feeling emboldened because Aang disappeared, because he wasn't mature enough to handle being the Avatar, making him at least partially responsible for everything that went down. Which is a pretty adult thing to deal with, and the original 'kids' show forced the main character to come to terms with it.... but in the 'adult' version he merely stepped out at just the right moment to 'clear his head' and survived by good luck because the fire nation was attacking anyway and then bad luck sees him disappearing. That's, well, kind of a really dumb change for no reason. But it's emblematic of a lot of strange choices this show made that kills so much dramatic weight. Then they try and contrive some reason to bring the same end point anyway, leaving you scratching your head as to why.
The writing on this show is bad, but it's bad in such bizarre ways. Which is a shame, because some of the actors are actually quite well cast and the production value is decent enough.

As a hater of all live action adaptions, ATLA was watchable but fairly shit while One Piece was relatively tolerable/often enjoyable to me (which means it must be downright standout).
The difference was that with the inevitable departures from the source material, the One Piece writers seemed to be actual fans of the IP and seriously considered how they could effectively adapt the story to LA. When they made a change, it served a legitimate purpose to the more compact narrative and faster pacing without shitting on the themes of original, such as introducing Arlong earlier or incorporating Coby into more East Blue arcs so he can parallel Luffy/have Garp show up more.
ATLA LA writers completely fuck this up out of arrogance/irreverence, ruining characters and undermining the core point of several storylines.

Indeed, though they are undeniably a part of it. People seem to forget that these shows are created by entire teams of people working together, and it all gets swept away and credited to mainly 3 or so guys - Mike, Bryan, and Aaron. We've seen how each of these people's work turns out when they're not put with a proper team - The comics and Korra are filled with tons of writing issues, and while I do think that Aaron is still a decent writer, without a lot of the concepts and world building ideas of the ATLA team behind him, his other projects have been lackluster in comparison. ATLA was lightning in a bottle, the right team of people came together at the right point in each of their lives / careers, with just enough restrictions (network t.v. made for children) to breed some serious creativity and subtlety that is very much lacking in their works where they're given more freedom.

The amount of unnecessary exposition drove me insane. Exposition can be incredibly helpful, but you have to give the viewer the opportunity to figure out what’s going on! The amount of exposition in this show made me feel like I was being talked down to. My favorite was during the siege on the northern water tribe when Sokka and Yue were I think in the oasis as the fire nation was arriving. You see up in the sky a big red hot air balloon with the fire nation insignia on it. The camera stays there for a moment, then we look back to Sokka and Yue (who do not look NEARLY worried enough btw but I’ll blame that on the director, not the actor) and one of them says something like “that’s not supposed to be here.” NO DUH?! We’re in the water tribe. We know that the fire nation army is the bad guys right now and they’re closing in. This is a big dramatic moment where you learn “they’re here, and they’re prepared for battle.” They could’ve just left the camera on Sokka and Yue looking horrified and then cut to the next thing. WHY DID YOU HAVE TO SAY WHAT EVERYONE CAN INFER?!
Tl;dr: unnecessary exposition is the second worst thing they did, after cutting out side quests but narrowly ahead of erasing Sokka’s sexism.

Oh no- NOOOO! YOU BETTER NOT! NETFLIX! YOU BETTER NOT! Is THAT what the showrunners meant by saying they wanted to "Appeal to Game of Thrones Fans!?"

There are certain reasons ppl still in love with the OG animation. U just can't delete most of them and try to compensate with flashy CGI, then say "take it as something different". It doesn't work. Fans stay fan for so long for certain reasons. U can't take away those reasons. U can't say accept whatever we are presenting since it has same name/IP.
This has become a disease in current entertainment industry. They lost ability to create their own classics so what they do is vandalize already existing ones in greed of cashing the nostalgia and loyalty of fans, then ignore the same fans while making it. The biggest culprits are the ones who keeps saying "it wasn't that bad", "they are not same" or "don't judge them too early" and defend such mediocre and awful stuff. Fans doesn't show up to see how u can twist their loved franchise, they show up to see the thing they love once more, maybe in a new setup. U can't change characters, story, theme and say "just accept it. U are a fan, no? How can u dislike ur own favorite show since it has same name?". The backlash is pretty strong now as u see in Disney and Marvel. We seen what happened to Snow white. There is still time to understand why such adaptations don't work at all, unless u love backlashes and losses.
If u don't wanna get compared, don't use a classic and try to replicate it. Want own ideals and views to be shown, want ur own version? Write ur own damn story. Don't expect no one will question u after u vandalize their treasure for ur own whims and fancies

I think the main 2 culprits are:
    1) Hollywood's inability to employ subtlety in writing. The show is SO GOD DAMN EXPOSITORY. It literally pre chews everything and spoon feeds you shit you should be able to figure out on your own like youre a helpless baby bird.
There are so many scenes where exposition is repeated for the 3rd or 4th time and its wild. So many parts of the show feel like the characters are speaking directly to the audience while they just so happen to be looking at their scene partners and not directly into the camera. It doesnt feel like they're actually talking to each other.
    2) The other problem is capitalism demands that art be profitable, and so people over engineer it for mass appeal and end up losing all the soul, spark and artistic merit that makes the original what it is. When you're forced by capitalism to make a product that's profitable, with mass appeal, youre not really making art anymore... There are so many important themes in the show, and NATLA basically just waters everything down to such a degree that it feels like "whats the point? Like why bother even making this if the result is gonna be inferior?"
A better choice would have been to tell another story set in this world instead of telling Aangs story.
Also 2 other complaints are the costumes and color grading look so insanely clean and brand new and saccharinely vibrant, that it makes the show look artificial.
And the acting is kinda rough in some parts. I think the actors do the best with what theyre given, but Aang, Katara, Azula and Zhao (ESPECIALLY ZHAO OMFG) are honestly pretty bad in these roles a lot of the time. Ive seen Zhao in other shows. He was great in the matrix, hes fantastic in Industry, but hes absolutely atrocious in NATLA.
I originally rated the show a 6/10, but the more I thought about it, I eventually settled on 4.5/10.

U can't fix what isn't broken. Primary rule. Every adaptation thinks they can make a classic even better by their own ideologies and agendas. We know what is the result of that, besides One Piece. Katara character is again victim of woke brigade, similarly Aang and Sokka too. Whole thing feels like the adaptation of Fire Nation play from animation instead of the actual one. Uninspired acting, no real chemistry, extreme lack of humor, very wooden expressions. Most impressive was Zhao and Zuko a bit. Azula and Katara are the worst. Aang is basically reading fortune cookies in front of camera in every scene. Most actors felt like reading script, not being the character. Only characters felt organic was Zhao and bit of Zuko by end. Felt natural
Here Aang keeps talking like he is reading fortune cookies. They forgot to make him organic which Luffy was. A naturally loving character with depth when required. Here, not sure why, they portrayed a kid who acts like a 100 yr old. This show is so dry besides action sequences as if having the comedy would give them allergies. Everything feels so artificial. I wish they worked even half as honestly and sincerely on characterization, dialogues and acting as much they worked on CGI. Most characters feel so disconnected and just acting
Doesn't matter how good u do in CGI, this show feels like missing the soul and chemistry. Lots of dialogues are just narrated, not felt. Acting is not as expected at all. Changes in characters is such a bad habit. Why do u ruin a iconic character by extra creative? I will blame direction and storytelling for this than actors. Now I know why Avatar team didn't stay with them till end. The first earth bender and lord Sozin did more acting in barely 5 mins or so than all of them together in rest of the episode. That says a lot.
How u handle woman empowerment matters. Also there is a difference between being woke and being a strong woman with character. They didn't even show master Paku being her grandma's fiance since that would lessen the impact of cruel patriarchy and victimhood. They needed another woman to show Paku how small minded he is. Katara was never called a master by anyone but Aang. Here she is master already. Even she trained with Paku too before teaching Aang. Here she doesn't require it, neither Aang. As usual flawless woman character. That is the biggest flaw. Didn't even show her stealing the scroll since that would ruin the perfect image. Stopped Zuko's massive attack in first ep itself while just learning bending few moments back. So many are there only if u notice it.
If u only felt something is off about this Katara before, then these are the reason. The usual habit of using woman characters to propagate an agenda

    Actually, your point doesnt stand.
When it comes to adaptations Netflix has one of the most uneaven records in history.
One Piece wasnt even the first good Anime adaptations.
A few years back they did an adaptation on *Devilman* and despite deciding to make their own thing of it and Drastically changed the animation, they stayed true to the source material and the show was fakking fantastic, its actually probably better than the original.
Ofc, I prefer the original as I grew up on it but Im pretty sure im heavily biased for that exact reason.
The Netflix verion is a real work of art, objectively speaking, I cant deny that and the very small diversions they did from the original made perfect sense and was actually good creative decisions.
    I highlly recommend it,
Then there is Castlevania which was fantastic.
I heard they completely fakked it over in season 4 but I only watched season 1 ad 2 then I lost my Netflix access and it just fell through the cracks but the two first season were brilliant.
The DotA series wasnt fantastic or anything but it was deecnt enough, it coulve been alot better but It wasnt unwatchable cringe like most stuff these days.
There was one more... why cant I remember >_<
Anyway, then there is of course One Piece which was phenomenal.
But even One Peice doesnt come close to the crown jewel of adaptations, fakking *_ARCANE_* dude.
Jesus fakking Christ, thats show is so unbelievably good.
Im still comparing things but I think it may be the best TV show Ive ever seen.
Its really hard to compare cross genre with things like Breaking Bad, Gods of the Arena and Sons of Anarchy.
So what I did was rewatch them all and simply tallied up the plot holes and mistakes.
Arcane came out on top. HOWEVER, I still havent annouced it the winner as the other shows had _very_ few flaws and _way_ more epidosed/seasons so....
I dont think it would be fair unless Arcane has more under its belt.
It it gets another season or two and theyre equally perfect as the first season, there is no arguing anymore.
    But I digress.
My point here is that Netflix seemingly only have two gearss, "The worst thing in the known universe" or "Absolute fakking masterpiece, how the fakk did you do _that?"_ cuz in the other end we have the cinematic equivalent of AIDS, Cancer and Antheax mixed togeather, stuff like DBZ and the absolute *abomination* that is Netflix Death Note.

If you have zero standards, sure? They utterly butchered every single relevant character, and that's not even getting into the terribly written dialog. There is zero reason to watch this over the original unless you're an idiot that sees animation as a lesser medium, or you're EXTREMELY young and have no capacity to understand subtext, so you need the characters to turn at the camera and exposition dump every piece of the story. From a writing perspective, it's a complete and utter disaster, and the writing is THE singular most important part - it's why ATLA is a timeless classic.

    • @Axxidous
      @Axxidous 10 месяцев назад

@@DarkAuraLord I mean I don’t have zero standards. I write my own stories. I listen to plenty of channels talking about different aspects of writing. I went to film school. And I hold the original ATLA to such a high regard for a reason.
Someone having a different opinion than you can’t be only because they’re inferior to you. So the insult and dismissiveness you’re offering, to me, makes an impactful introduction to how I should perceive your mindset regarding everything else you have to say. Which doesn’t even matter because the things you have to say are they “butchered” “every single” character, that anyone who likes this version more is an “idiot”, followed by an assumption about why the person would like it more, these 2 things put together to make up out of thin air point that someone prefers it over the original in the first place AND the accused reason for it (disregarding that maybe this is simply the version they saw or stumbled upon, period), and then try to cap it off with saying that there’s even a singular most important part of ATLA being the classic it is. You might as well have just said “the story is the most important part of the story”. Otherwise you’re doing a huge disservice to every other amazing aspect of the original show without which the show would not be as great as it is. The show, like all great things, is merely the sum of its parts.
This adaptation isn’t without flaws. But “failed” is what the movie did. The show “stumbled”. The dialogue in the show is exposition heavy. But it’s not like this entirely, and not every example of it was bad. Exposition =/= bad inherently. It’s just how and when it’s used. You want to see REALLY bad exposition then, again, look at the movie. This show has examples of “show don’t tell” as well such as Zuko seeing Appa fly by and choosing not to say anything about it to his uncle so he can take care of him. (Also it’s the same story regardless, just a different tactic to get the info to the audio and one just tends to engage the audience more).
Idk. You might be a writing expert for all I know. But that doesn’t make your attitude right. It would be one thing if you just left a comment expressing your dislike for the show. But it’s another that you not only have to insult people who aren’t as bitter, but you have to reply to my comment, about why I wasn’t as upset, and then insult me for it too and imply I’m wrong about my own opinions.

    • @DarkAuraLord

@@Axxidous 1) I never said you were inferior, I exaggerated about your standards for the quality of writing you're willing to accept. Your STANDARDS are inferior (imo, obviously). That can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it and what you value in your life. Being critical of things isn't always good.
      2) if we're talking what we can glean about one another from each other's comments, you can think I'm a dismissive asshole all you want, I don't mind, my comment is indicative of that the same way your comment is indicative of you being far too accepting of dog shit writing and not actually reading what I'm saying lmao.
3)I never said anyone who likes this version is an idiot, I said there's no reason to watch it over the original UNLESS you're an idiot *that sees animation as a lesser medium* . I don't think it's unfair to call somebody an idiot for thinking an entire medium of art is lesser simply for being that medium. I can tell reading comprehension isn't your forte, so I'll spell it out plainly like Netflix would: *you* are *acting* like an idiot right now by either speed reading my comment or deliberately ignoring pieces of the context.
      4) "You might as well have just said the story is the most important part of the story"
I don't know if you realize this or not, but "writing" is not the only part of crafting a story. Especially not when you're in a medium like film or animation. You went to film school, you should understand this better than I do. I'm surprised somebody with a background in film has no issue with the cinematography of this - I don't know much about film, and even I can tell it's amateurish.
      5) I never said all exposition is bad, there is a natural and organic way to deal with exposition, the original Avatar does it quite well. An easy way of writing exposition you see used a lot across fiction is by having characters that are ignorant of the larger world, so it works that they'd naturally ask questions which can serve to fill in exposition to the audience. TOO much exposition when handled POORLY is an issue and NATLA has that in spades.
      6) "Failed is what the movie did" I'm not here to argue about the semantics of how you PERSONALLY define failure and success. Obviously we have different definitions of this term. Suffice to say that, to me, this shit is no better than the disaster movie that M Night put out, and in someways it's worse. Katara feels more like Katara in M Night's version, and that's a fucking tragedy.

I think because of how bad the CGI and the effects in m night's version were, they really wanted to get them right this time and that's why they put so much effort into just that. Honestly if they had done the opposite and had nailed the writing at the cost of the visuals it would still have been a much better adaptation. Honestly it's amazing how well thought out the writing and structural design of the show that literally taking out a single scene removes an insane amount of character development and can affect the show in so many ways. Like even the episodes that can be considered filler add something important to the overall narrative and allows us an even deeper understanding of the characters/messages the show wanted to convey. The Ember Island Players was technically a recap episode for most of its duration, but it still manages to develop Aang and Katara's relationship and demonstrates to everybody including us watching, the gravity of the upcoming fight and how important it is for him to beat Ozai. One thing i'll say though, Dallas James Liu sounds pretty similar to Dante Bosco at some points i'm kinda here for it.

You know that if they had nailed the writing at the cost of the visuals everyone would be bitching about it even more
So no I’m happy they made it visually almost perfect because the writing isn’t as bad as people want you to believe

aang able to fly maybe is possible in the first part (haven't watched the live action) cuz they said that air benders can fly back then but in exchange of their worldly attachment, they must rid of it and detach to anything that connects to them on the earth but even in the cartoon series, the air nomads in aang's back story can't fly since they form bonds and families over the years

Having watched the LAA in German was advantageous then. They got most of the original voice cast back on set, so the delivery was spot on. I enjoyed this adaptation actually.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about how season 2 episodes are in season 1 and yet they could use those episodes to fit in other important parts from the original season 1 cause they only had 8 episodes. Plus also surprised you didn't mention Aang and Kara's relationship not being there at all as the original used the cave episode to establish more of a romantic bond between them

You take the words out of my mouth. Couldn't have articulated what is wrong with this awful series better than you just did. If people ask me why I dislike the series, I'll just send them a link of this video.
