I'm really impressed at the design work here - the ruler genuinely looks like it has great fit and finish. Plus it's attractive! Just briefly, documentation is basically the last thing people think of - I'm stoked it's so comprehensive. A great idea for someone just a bit past brand new but wants to really dive in to electronics programming.
About six months ago, I graduated as an electrical engineer. When I was in school, this would have been an excellent way to learn! Props for great thinking and making it real!
This is really cool, the soldering challenge for smd sounds pretty interesting as smd kinda scares me whenever I have to solder some component even as basic as a 1206 resistor
I ordered three of these and they arrived today. The electrical engineer in me is geeking out. Totally awesome little kit! I plan to give out the other two as gifts to family that show an interest in engineering. Fantastic job and thank you for doing this!
That's the most impressive tech merchandise I've seen, most youtubers would just sell some generic merchs which is ok but not so related to their channels. This deruler looks both cool and useful for people like me who want to get into soldering and programming, huge respect to you and Elmor who came up with this idea.
Man, I've wanted to get into electronics for years, but my old career kept me very busy. I'm now able to get deeper into it and this ruler looks amazing. Going to have to get one even if I win one. My son wants to design robots for nasa..... he will love this.
The SMD soldering and working PCB make it so much cooler than the other PCB rulers I've seen. It'd be a great excuse to break out the soldering iron and practice some SMD soldering.
As someone who's new into designing simple PCBs (I usually do custom keyboard PCBs), this is a very good project to learn about soldering and programming!
This is a nice way to get new students introduced to the field of electronics. Some of the most expensive devices have the simplest circuits. When devices break, having basic electronics knowledge can save a lot of cash. Being able to diagnose circuit board issues has saved me a ton in repair costs.
This is probably the coolest learning tool I've seen. If I was still in school I would definitely take it to class with me and mess around with it before lectures!
great kit you have created here with Elmor. i like it! and can even be modified a bit further. also am happy to see the inclusion of electronics formulas on the back. this is most helpful. as need to use those pretty often kindda amazing given for being a pcb ruler. thank you both for the effort put into it. and supporting to educate people for right to repair. and to help just regular people become more independent in fixing things. really this is most appreciated 👍👍
This is really cool! I am going to suggest this video to one of my professors. He is the Dean of the Electronics Department at my college and we have talked about how to make the soldering program more engaging and informative.
I just started learning soldering and this seems like it would be great practice for a lot of differently sized/shaped components, and a great opportunity to learn C! The price seems very reasonable as well. Thank you for this really cool project!
Drag soldering a surface mount IC is a joy that everyone should experience, the 1st time you do it, you think it is some kind of magic, the way the solder just goes on the pins, very cool.
This is a brilliant idea! A great way to get started with SMD and microsoldering (and MPU/MCU programming) without risking any of your personal electronics.
Such a nice little kit you've got here. I would suggest to make the 10-pin connector asymmetric by snipping a pin and plugging a corresponding hole just to make it a bit more foolproof.
This kit looks perfect for someone like me, I'm a Computer Science student (so I already know C) but I haven't really soldered anything beyond a failed attempt at attaching debug wires to an old kindle. Documentation looks awesome as well, so thank you Elmor!
Best way of learning is when you're interested in the subject and having fun doing it. And you get a quality, awesome looking, practical tool aswell(and the "cool" factor as a cherry on top).
That's so cool, I've always wanted a project like this. To write code directly to a micro controller has always been like a dream of mine, but I never knew where to look.
That’s an amazing idea. This reminds me of the ruler made by AvE (which unfortunately I have never been able to get my hands on) but while that was more focused on the functional side of the tools, being focused on the learning part (both for soldering and programming) makes this too a really cool project, I gave a quick look on the documentation and, while the landing page could be improved for mobile devices, it seems to be really clear, and the in-depth review of the circuit was spot on, I remember that when I was in high school I had to work with poorer documentation, seeing this level of attention on a project like this is really nice.
This is pretty cool. I haven't soldered anything on a pcb in a long time, this is a nice way to get back into it while also learning about how the different components work.
Very smart choice deciding to create a product instead of just doing a paid advert on this! I havent touched much circuitry since the 90s in my tech classes but this could easily be promoted as a kit for schools to use as a starter (like you guys designed it to be obviously). My mind was blown when I saw this was actually a functional pcb!!! At first I thought it was just a showpiece or something. Very impressive!
I will be honest, electricity is black magic to me. I did not understand of most of what you said but the initiative is wonderful. Younger me would've killed for this.
Just what I needed... Just had surgery and can't normally work for a couple of months and want to dive into soldering / programming. It's a fantastic idea Roman and if not won... I'll absolutely buy it and can place it next to my Delid Die mate which I also bought in the 8th Gen Intel time :D Thank you very much for your great explaining, the fantastic video's etc. I learnt a lot since I found your channel about 3 years ago.
Great idea! It would be nice if there were a bundle were u could get a second ruler with the kit because once u solder the pin headers on, it is harder to use it as a ruler that looks nice and u can carry as a tool
@@Bubba_Grimm shipping and packing 2 separately is gonna be more expensive. Packing everything in a box would be much more efficient (both price and material wise)
@@8lec_R it's probably cheaper to only have one packaging version. And it's only $30. Material-wise it would technically be cheaper to do what you said but probably not once everything is already ready to ship. Not unless a large number of people demand it.
This looks so cool! I'm a chemistry major, and we're currently learning about circuitry for our instrumentation class. This would go a long way to helping me understand some of the material! Hope I win one!
Very cool idea, I like that the ST-Link V2 USB Programmer is included with this as well. Sounds like a fun project & functional item after you test your soldering skills.
I've had quite a few SMD practice kits in the past, but nothing this well thought out. Congrats, Roman. This is very cool, and I'd love to get my hands on one to learn more programming stuff. Ive got the hardware and soldering down well, but I really suck at software. Good luck everyone entering the giveaway 👍
This is an awesome project. I've wanted to learn the basics of smd soldering and this will give me a neat little project to try. Thanks Roman and Elmore for coming up with this
This is such an awesome idea, i am an electronics engineer and this would have been nice 3 year ago when o really started soldering and programming. Great job!
As someone who's just getting started with soldering SMD resistors and reworking SOIC chips (with lead-free solder, because RoHS), this looks like a good starter kit for those who want to get into advanced soldering skills. All it takes is having the correct tips (I'm still using the common B tip, but I believe using thinner tips or D tips are better, dependent on your preference), and a little bit of patience. I'm also halfway building my own Uno on veroboard, however it's currently stalled as I had other commitments, but I'll get back to the project later down the line.
Just started diving into soldering and this is a fantastic opportunity to practice soldering and of course get some insights in C. Love this product. The price is super. Thank you for such a cool idea.
This is a really nice project that seems like a great way for beginners to start with smd soldering and programming. It would also be really cool and helpful with a stream that shows and explain how everything works. Thanks Roman and Elmore.
Hey Derbauer, go and have a look at Tronclub. It was an electronics kit subscription service. I subscribed to it and received 3 microprocessor, kits from them before they mysteriously stopped sending them. Not sure what happened to them, I guess they went bust, but the quality of the kits was amazing. You got a different Atmel microprocessor of them each kit, and different bits and pieces as well as really high quality instruction booklets. All the programming was in C, using AVRDude and one of those serial USB programmers you showed in the video. All the circuits were built up on breadboards. Anyway, it would be really good if someone, like you guys, could start something similar again. I really enjoyed each kit it was such a shame Tronclub imploded like it did.
Quite cool. I've only recently gotten into soldering to make simple circuits and was looking at thru hole practice boards so I'm not even close to attempting surface mount. You managed to make those IC pins look effortless
I am so glad you started doing videos in English. I always learn a lot. I entered the giveaway. One of these would give me a great incentive to use the new 60W digital soldering station and multimeter I got for Christmas, as I've wanted to learn these things for a long time. I already know the basics of how to solder but have had little opportunity to use it for anything exciting. So far all I've had opportunity to use my new soldering station for is fixing a remote with a bad connection near the IR-emitter.
I’ve been working with components since the early 2000s, and would still love messing around with that; my son is getting into IT now himself, I could see him getting a kick out of it too.
I love kits like this. I don't think I've ever seen one that gets you to install a controller yourself. They're usually much simpler or on a premade board. This is a great idea.
This is a very interesting device. This reminds me of tech school type of projects. Although tech school for me was starting out with tube amplifiers and controls. This is a fun to build and gives everyone the ability to learn about circuit design & programming and assembly with the use of SMD circuits.

Had a lot of fun soldering the ruler kit from AvE a couple of years ago. It's about time to do it again i guess
I recommend good microscope, which helps for smaller electronic components, especially with the placement.
