  • On the Bernstein & Holmes Show, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic analyzed the Cubs' trade of third baseman Christopher Morel and two prospects to the Rays in exchange for All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes on Sunday. Are Paredes' hitting tendencies a concern at Wrigley Field? What does this trade mean for Cubs infielder prospect Matt Shaw's future with the organization?

    I usually don't post but I'm going to say this. Morell basically is a player with two full years in the bigs. He hit 27 homers last year. He never had a position to begin with. Nico Hoerner once said in an interview that Morell was really good at second. Now remember. This year how banged up he was. Multiple hbp, finger issue, toe from foul balls all while learning third. I've watched baseball long enough to know that there maybe will come a time when the cubs look back and say we traded away another superstar while the try to buy another one with no payroll

      I agree. Plus they told him to stop swinging and missing and to take more walks, he’s done that while still hitting bombs. They expected too much too fast. He made the exact improvements they demanded in no time; minus his defensive struggles

    I'm very worried that we both sold low on Morel and bought high on Paredes. I'm always suspicious of trading with the Rays. They wanted Morel, Bigge and Johnson for specific reasons. They don't just pull players out of a hat when making trades.
    It's a good thing that the Cubs filled their gaping black hole at third base with a solid starting 3B. My main concern is that Paredes is just that: solid. Just like the rest of our "solid", slightly above average position players. The Cubs still are in the same overall position they were a day or two ago: they lack stars and impact bats.

      This is a solid post.
      The only thing I'd add, is that they just drafted the 3B of the future, who is hopefully ready in late '25 or by '26 latest.
      Paredes then becomes a good offensive/defensive placeholder that is cheap. The free agent 3B class looks awful considering the cost of them. Better to save money for an elite closer and/or another Starter especially if you deal Taillon now...or another valuable bat.

    Nice trade. Now go get a catcher, closer and move a lot of the pinch hitters out for more power, maybe trade some of your many 2nd basemen for more power or a ton of outfield young talent for more power. In the off season they need 1-2 relief guys that throw 98+ out of the pen. I firmly believe Hunter Bigge will be a flame throwing RP for the Rays. He’s gonna be great.

      Morel had good slugging numbes and a good OPS last year. With this much control left the Cubs had to see if they struck gold with him at the plate. My eyes didn't like what I saw from him and I figured he would regress this year once the book is out on him. I'm glad they at least got some value out of him. Now TB gets to see if they can fix him.

    Jamieson is a good pitcher but he's a dumb pitcher. If you look at his starts this year, including tonight? He grooves strikes at 0-2 and 1-2 and especially with two outs. JD called for a high fastball tonight and instead the Cubs starting pitcher threw an 80 mph curve ball literally right in the middle of the plate. 3 run dinger. There is no reason to throw a strike until it's 3-2. At 1-2 what is that hitter doing? He is in swing mode. And he is thrilled when Jamei boy gives him something to hit. Something dripping with A1 sauce. And he has done it about 20 times where he is ahead and throws a strike. His response is always, "duh, I'm a strike thrower." You mean you give up dingers. Moreoever, the catchers and the coaches are also dumb. If you know your catcher is a dim wit and your pitcher is a dimwit, at least call a pitch from the dugout. 94 and 5 inches above the zone. Then a curve ball in the dirt. He gave up 2 run and 3 run dingers tonight to two dudes hitting .195 and .211. And that's the ball game. I like to get rid of dummies so get rid of him tomorrow and give me 5 AA pitchers from anytown USA. And yes, getting rid of another dumb player in Morel was great. He just goes up there and whacks at anything but is not afraid to take a called strike 3 which he has done about 40 times this year. K looking. Sure some are 2 inches outside but if you know the UMPs love to call strike 3 on every player all the time? Maybe swing the bat when you have two strikes. Conversely, he like all the Cubs? Are NOT afraid to take meat ball strike one down the middle. They lead the league in the first pitch strike and they stand there. They know NOT the meaning of the word ambush. And what is the league avg when down 0-1? It's like ten. Exaggerating.

    This trade is not that big a deal
    we are getting 250 hitter with one of the lowest exit velocities in baseball. Morel on the other hand has hit some HR that have still not landed additionally you are being far too hard on 5 playing 3rd this was his first year playing it. He led the team in HR even with a 200 average. His upside is far better than what we got in return not to mention we gave away a RP who can top a 100 mph with a wicked curve. This speaks to the cubs organizational thinking we talk about our garbage bull pen we bring this kid up he makes one appearance he is simply un hit able and we send him right back meanwhile Toronto says we need this guy for our bull pen NOW. The Cubs are losing because Hoener Swanson Happ and just about everybody else isn’t hitting. This trade was short sighted and stupid.

    • @lijerry32
      @lijerry32 2 месяца назад +2

      Respectfully disagree. Saying the trade is short sighted and stupid is wrong imo. This offense needed a change and Jed managed to actually move a .199 hitter with bad defense for a player who they hoped him to be or even better. I like Morel too from a pure energy guy standpoint and I’m sure he’s a great guy, but to me when he’s playing, he’s Javy Baez, but with bad defense and all or nothing swings. He tries to be Superman every AB and at least this yr from what I’ve noticed I’ve never seen a guy take that many center cut strikes and Ks out looking due to that. Outside of that White Sox gm, what gm(s) can you remember where he took over and put the tm on his back? Yes, he’s cut down the k rate and draws walks more, but has it resulted to more Ws or Avg? And please do your research, this is not Morel’s 1st yr playing 3B, he played 3B back in 2018. And you said Toronto, you mean TB. Yes, I’m concerned that TB may turn Bigge into the closer of their future, however, he’s never been a guy who can throw consistent strikes dating back to before even when he was drafted. Plus Jed made up for that by acquiring Pearson who can throw 103, even more velo than Bigge. So in the end, I’d take the more finished product who’s an AS 3B, who plays much better defense, has a much better approach and can actually win you ballgames over Morel all day. You can hate the trade because it sounds like you’re a Morel fan, which’s fine but again, you take Paredes for the reasons I’ve mentioned all day over a not finished product and not even close to it.

      Again respectfully disagree. We’re not talking about Seiya, Nico and Dansby, it’s about your comments that I respectfully disagree. Getting better at 3rd? Maybe we’re watching a different game. He’s among the lg leaders this yr in errors and has a negative WAR, how’s that getting better? 50 times better than Schwarber? Schwarber was a top 10 prospect, if he’s so good as you say he is then why was Morel never a top 10 prospect in the Cubs system? He wasn’t even top 15. You can say trading him was a mistake because you seem to be a Morel fan, but like spaceghost said, he can’t play defense well. Some players just can’t play defense regardless even if they have a strong arm. Name me some guys outside of Estrada that the Cubs have let go and turned out to be really good? Rizzo, meh in NY, KB fizzled out, Javy’s getting close to being out the league, Contreras is just a avg C now, Alex Lange for some reason Detroit doesn’t like him anymore when he was supposed to be their closer. Nelson Velazquez was the next Soler 2.0 for KC but since got optioned. Herz, ok but to me he’s a 3-4 starter. Made, never heard his name again. Ferris, we’ll see but he’s still in Single-A. Name me some players they gave up on too soon that made an impact? And again, I’d suggest you do some research, Morel did play in AAA before his call up, just saying.
