I don’t know where to start or finding a mechanic near me in Austin/Wimberley area to check it out for me. I would rather by from someone who has kept up with repairs and regular maintenance.

My Xterra is an 2007 4WD, I have put 310,000 miles on it. It has had SMOD which destroyed the transmission and radiator at 120K miles. My mechanic asked me why fix it, I told him it's an Xterra. $3000 for that. then the rear axel failed. He again asked why fix it, I told him it's an xterra...that was $1200. some 200k miles later and it still runs well and gets 15-18mpg. New Plugs, sensors, a throttle clean, hoses, breaks. all less expensive than a car payment. It's an Xterra. And we Xterra owners are LEGION.

I just replaced the entire front and rear suspension, brakes and rotors, and brake lines myself and everything went together well. The engine runs like it's brand new and is very powerful. I used to sell these Xterras when I was at Desert Nissan in Vegas from 2006-2007. LOVED this vehicle! Such a easy sell, too. Fun fact about the seating: Rear passenger seats are slightly raised above the front seats (theatre-style) to prevent motion sickness. Rear passengers can look over the heads of front driver/passenger. This stair-step seating configuration was intentional from Nissan.
Plus, all rear cargo areas had the plastic paneling and anchor railing system to latch down recreational items. Some of the front passenger seats even folded down flat so you could stow long items from hatch to windshield.
This generation Xterra was SUCH a great vehicle! Wish I had one.

If you neglect or abuse them, somewhere down the way, they'll stop dead in the road on you. The VDC probably works. If the battery gets disconnected (as in, needed a new battery), the VDC needs to be RESET. Here's how: park the vehicle with a straight away and no traffic in front of you and turn off the vehicle. Restart it, drive slowly and straight for 50 to 100 yards. Suddenly the VDC warning light will turn off indicating it has been reset. Bought my 2008 "Off-Road" version in 2010. Added aluminum off-road bumper, rooftop tent and DIY kitchen. It is a go everywhere rough road monster, six on the floor, 22 mpg all use average. No repairs have been needed. Much better mileage, and no automatic transmission issues to deal with. Nitrogen shocks, low range, Dana axle, lockers, all standard! The off-road bumper protects the plastic radiator.

A few things you've missed about the 2006 XTerra - The timing chains are generally more reliable, but the early Gen2 models with the VQ40 engine had an issue with the chain tensioners and they needed to be replaced. The automatic transmissions are solid - but the ATF is run through the radiator and the early Gen2 models with automatics had a fault in the radiator that allowed it to crack and mix the glycol coolant with the ATF - this kills the transmission with what we call "The Strawberry Milkshake of Death". There are easy ways to bypass the radiator and new radiators have been available that address the manufacturing defect. Finally - it's got 265 bhp, not 210.

Additionally, the oil galley gaskets would blow causing low oil pressure but an easy fix if you were already doing the timing chains. The SMOD issue was fixed with 2010 models. I’ve had to rebuild the transmission after it twice as well, but shifts amazingly after. I’d never get rid of my Xs.

If you like the 03, you'd really love the Gen 2s. Way more power, more leg and shoulder room, and more stable with the wheels moved more to the corners. I had an 02, got the 05 new. Retired it as a daily driver a couple of years ago, kept it for playing in the mountains and desert.

Don't forget about the PMOD= pink milkshake of death! The cheap plastic in the radiator that allows mixing of trans fluid and coolant. It forms a Pepto bismol looking fluid. Easy fix to install a separate trans cooler than use the factory one on the radiator. Happens at 100k to 200k.

Yay, Scotty, Yay! I LOVE my 2008 Nissan Xterra that I purchased in 2009 at 8,000K miles. I'm the second owner. It is still running strong at 205,450 miles! At 200K miles I had to change both CAM sensors and this week I have to change the gasket seal, but those are trivial repairs compared to not having a car note. My Dad is pressuring me to get another vehicle, but I keep saying that my NIssan is doing just fine. I will get another one eventually, but the next car has a large frame to fill, lol. I've let the back seats down and towed my one hundred pound labrador, two fruit trees, cement and groceries all at the same time. And...my car still looks damn good.

I paid sticker price and bought the first year ‘99 when they came out with it. Four wheel drive wasn’t available in the southeast at that time. They sold those in snowy climates. When 4x4 supply reached the southeast I traded the 2x4 for one. Awesome vehicles. ‘99 models have underpowered engines so skip those. But I replaced the brakes at 106,000 miles. That’s right. Original brakes lasted 106K and I towed a popup camper and a utility trailer! Hated it when they discontinued it.
The reason I think Nissan ended the Xterra is because it was so popular people weren’t buying the pricier Pathfinder Armada.
