    She has a surprisingly large and pure voice for someone who is physically so tiny. Clearly, her technique is superb and she also takes care to place emotional emphases at the right places in the text which many Baroque singers fail to do.

      Body size is not related to how rich or big the voice sounds. Only the range.

    • @suzannederringer1607
      @suzannederringer1607 4 года назад +39

      @@littlesunshine9218 Range is not determined by body size. For instance, high 'coloratura soprano' range in both the tiny, slim Lily Pons and 'Big-boned' 6-foot tall Joan Sutherland.
      But body size and shape IS your Instrument. Like any musical instrument it has its unique qualities and the Singer must learn to 'play' what she or he has been given by Nature.

    • @littlesunshine9218
      @littlesunshine9218 4 года назад +8

      @@suzannederringer1607 Body size has nothing to do with how the voice projects or sounds. And of course, tall women can be coloratura sopranos - it's just very less likey than with a small/short woman.

      @suzannederringer1607 4 года назад +20

      @@littlesunshine9218 How the Voice 'projects' depends upon TECHNIQUE. That's the whole point of Voice Voice Lessons.
      Body size and shape and bone density and fat have a great deal to do with the unique Sound of each Voice. A Cello sound like a Violin but both 'project' their sound through proper playing.

    So nice to see an ensemble directed from the keyboard, which was the way it was done in the baroque period.

      Harpsichord, to be precise... 😀

    • @tylerbuchanan3430
      @tylerbuchanan3430 4 года назад +12

      Another reason for the conductor to be at a harpsichord is because of the layout of the keyboard part for the piece. Leading into the B section of the Aria, the main harpsichordist switches to the continuo organ, and someone must take over the harpsichord part whilst she switches. Baroque music is not just beautiful sounding, it’s beauty is in it mechanics of perfection and performance.

      @@Paulsonof Keyboard is arguably a much better term, and people generally prefer it when talking about period music. And that is because they could have very well been sitting at a positive chest organ instead of an harspichord, or really whatever instrument available. Don’t go off and immediately compare it to the modern piano, that doesn’t really work well. Translating the harpsichord as the piano of our time is not very correct. Keyboard instruments were much more diverse than now, and people had also different ideas and such around them.

    What I love bout this singer is not ONLY her amazing timbre & technique, but her manifest enjoyment of what she's doing. So many singers furrow their brows & look agonized as they produce their finest notes & trills, but Julia's having a great time, enjoying every second of the music & of her own virtuosity. And the fun she's having spills over onto the accompanists---just watch the violinist at 3.06! The sound is divine, but just watching her brings a smile to my face. Thank you Julia.

    I love all the comments about how happy and effortless she makes it look... let me assure you, as someone who does this, she might or might not be loving every second, but she's a professional and working her butt off! She's not only a great singer, but a great actress. Even when the continuo crashes at 1:41 (I think somebody jumped ahead to the da capo) and she has to IMPROVISE and wait for the beat to find her again, she's right back on the horse in under 3 seconds as if it never happened - and until I looked at the score, I honestly had no idea. Also, I love the way she ornaments the da capo - enough to make it fresh but also stay within the style and not just show off. This is what an experienced professional looks and sounds like, folks. Exquisite!

    This girl stepped-out of a fresco somewhere in St. Petersburg; even her physical appearance, along with her voice, seem cut right out of the mid-1700s. The way she commands every note without belittling the accompaniment, and the way the latter doesn’t compete with her voice, is so cool to see on video. Thanks!

    Her voice is the silkiest chocolate; it's the smoothest golden satin; it's linens flowing in a gentle breeze. Her control, technique, and quality are so ethereal and effortless, and I love it. My ears thank her.

    ~Da tempeste il legno infranto,
    se poi salvo giunge in porto
    non sa più che desiar.
    Così il cor tra pene, e pianto,
    Or che trova il suo conforto
    torna l'anima a bear.~
    "A storm-battered vessel, if it at least arrives safely in port, has nothing left to desire. So my heart, through suffering and weeping, now that it has found comfort, returns to make my soul happy at last."

    Some weird things happening about 2:45. First the female harpsichord player vanishes into thin air and then a flute is to hear out of nowhere. Julia Lezhneva is not from this world. I can't take my eyes and ears of her. Truly mesmerizing.

      Indeed! I have watched this many times and have never noticed that. You have “sharp” eyes @sharpandsentient 😏
      - My curiosity got the better of me and I watched again and I think I figured it out.
      - The harpsichordist and the continuo organ (organo/little organ?) player are one and the same person
      - At about 1:56 she moves over to the organo - if you look past the first violinist you see her settling in at the organo 2:02-2:14 - and then at 3:22 she takes her music and moves back to the harpsichord (notice at 3:34 there is now no one at the organo)
      - At 1:59 there is a dull thud - it is probably her as she makes the move over to the organo
      - I have no idea where the flutist is - and neither does the camera person 🙂
      - Yes - I had too much time on my hands tonight, but thank you @sharpandsentient for the little visual challenge!
