    I remember when my uncle had an arowana and he had a huge tank for it. It was so fascinating to look at. My uncle used to have two but the stronger, bigger arowana killed it’s own brother. My uncle had that fish for about three months or so, and it was healthy and big. My auntie who was living in the same house as my uncle heard a loud thumping noise, like there was something bumping onto the floor rapidly one night. She went to check it out and saw the arowana dead. It had stopped moving. It has jumped out of its tank even though the roof of it was open a slight bit, and that thing was about 5-6 centimetres thick.

    I went to a local pet store in my area where they also sell regular juvenile silver arowanas for around P1,200 or $25 each. I noticed that in a separate tank, there is a single arowana which looks almost the same but if you look closer, it radiates golden streaks. I was told it’s a Golden arowana that costs P9,000 or around $180. I badly want it!!!!

    They're not that expensive for an albino white one, it only costs around 150-300 bucks. The prices go up for a red arowana (up to 70K) or a golden arowana (up to 300K). But they're extremely hard to take care of, you usually need a very big fish tank for just one arowana, their body is usually long so a big fish tank is needed for them to swim freely. Sometimes, they can get really aggressive also and they tend to jump off the water surface.

    I had no idea, I used to see them now and then, small ones, at the pet store here in Canada in the ‘90’s. I wonder if they are still around?
    I think the problem back then was you needed a huge tank because they grew fairly fast. That’s why I never got one.

  • @dragon6irl
    @dragon6irl 6 лет назад +34

    You didn’t mention that there are other types of arowana that are legal to keep in the US. The most common and cheapest is the silver arowana, which has a much more serpentine body type (some were shown in the video) and go for about $90 as juveniles. The extra white ones are called platinum and are much more valuable, like the one that sold for 300k. I’ve been into arowanas for a few years but I don’t have the space for a 500 gallon tank yet, sadly. I’ll get there.

    I worked at an aquarium store that had an Australian arowana (legal in the USA). She was big, shiny, and Mean As Hell. People would walk into the store and offer hundreds of dollars for her, though she had a very clear sign on her aquarium that she wasn’t for sale.
    What was most fascinating to me was how very aware she was of the world around her. She was half-blind so she’d always turn her body so she could watch patrons with her good eye. There was something very intimidating about her. Like she was simultaneously challenging and judging you.
    I can honestly see why they’re considered a macho sort of thing to own. Their countenance is more intense than a shark’s.

    The Asian Arowana is not endangered nor is the law banning its sale and distribution in the United States appropriate. This fish is legal to own and bred at ornamental fish farms in just about every country, including Canada with the exception of the United States still considering them endangered. A law that hasn’t been updated or reviewed since the late 80s. Thanks PETA. With almost every fish being bought and sold, bred at farms specifically in business for the pet trade, their is no impact on this fishes habitat or its wild numbers. In fact, 100% of hobbyists that buy these fish, prefer the more desirable colored ones mentioned in this video. With most wild Asian Arowana being dull or generic in color. Nobody wastes their time taking them from the wild. In that case, they might as well buy either a Silver or Jardini Arowana. Both extremely beautiful fish that look almost identical to the Asian Arowana as far as body shape. The fact that this fish is illegal in the United States and people have gone to jail for distributing them is just plain stupid when you can simply cross the border into neighboring Canada and get your hands on just about any variety of Arowana you can afford. It makes the US laws look silly. Just my two cents. By the way, I hate when non hobbyists make videos about aquarium fish or the hobby in general. These videos make me cringe. The lack of factual information and exploited common knowledge is hilarious.

      PETA Is not the organization that lists an animal as endangered. PETA is a joke. That is IUCN's job. Then there's CITES which is a convention between governments to regulate wildlife trade to protect wild populations. These organizations were formed to protect flora and fauna worldwide. These orgs are run by scientists (experts in flora and fauna) ~ the real experts. The Asian Arowana listed as ENDANGERED under the IUCN Red List. It is also listed in CITES apppendix I which makes it illegal to catch asian aros in the wild and use them for trade, but farm raised individuals are listed under CITES II which makes them ok to trade albeit proper permits are needed for breeding and selling, also depends on each country's laws. Asian Arowana IUCN Red List status: www.iucnredlist.org/species/20034/9137739 / CITES listing: www.cites.org/eng/gallery/species/fish/golden_arowana.html

      its a myth where the fish would kill itself to protect any accidents or harm befalling the owner. theyre stories where owners miraculously survives a car crash only to come home to find their arowana dead.

    We also call this Arowana and is so much special to be given as a gift, clearly not as special as to own one. It is believed that an Arowana can live so long and the moment it dies, it means that it saved a family member from death. Before in my family, we were gifted two, all from my Dad's Chinese clients (he's a lawyer), one gold and one silver or which we call 'Albino'.. the Albino almost lived to 10 years... And I must say, they are beautiful magical creatures... and we usually keep them in big, and I mean big aquariums and are fed with chicken or beef meat.

    Indonesian here
    The asian arwana used to be so common we'd usually have them as food, like any other fish.
    EDIT: My uncle currently has one as a pet. Its only expensive because people say so.

      I think the wild still has plenty of them, just maybe not with those striking colors that would make hunting harder and getting hunt easier
