Just switched to the srixon soft feel (precisely 2 rounds ago after lockdown). Best golf I’ve played and gives me massive confidence. Plus the price point helps the pocket. Keep up the great work Mark 🏌🏼‍♂️⛳️

Where do you buy them? My friend just got into golf more last year and I sent him to golfdiscount.com, you can buy a dozen for 10 bucks there when they’re on sale, they sell them in 6 packs for 4.99..I game the xv’s, I’ve been golfing for awhile and when the xv’s and z’s are on sale on, they’re 9.99 for a six pack, so 20 a dozen..can’t beat those prices..the q stars are like 6.99 or something..crazy good deals

Srixon Soft feel compression is 60. Q Star is listed at 72. For a 75-year-old man with lower swing speed - I'm torn between the two. You did say a couple times the Q Star was close in soft feel to the cheaper ball. The numbers bear that out. (I've played Titleist all my life).
*UPDATE: I've watched this now a second time and the 72 compression Q Star Tour stands out to me.*

Being someone who is looking at the Srixon line and hasn't been able to decide between the budget friendlier Q-Star Tour and "holy crap if I lose one in the water I'll be pissed" Z-star, this is an awesome video. Still need to work on the game before the Z-Star investment happens, the Q-Star Tour looks like where I should start. Thank you Mark!!

The Soft Feel is the best ball for Senior golfers such as myself , low spin off the driver gives more distance and it spins enough of the irons to hold the green.

After trying higher end of Bridgestone and TM balls, I've come back to the Srixon Q Star Tour. Great value for money. I will play the Q Star for social games and save the better ball for comp days.
Your comment regarding different handicapped golfers would bring another element to a ball test.

Loaded up on on the Srixon Z Star XV’s when they were doing their buy one get one sale during Father’s Day. Came out to $20 a dozen! Cannot beat the value. I had been playing PRO V1, but I prefer the firmer feel and sound. Gives me the feeling the ball is jumping off the club face. Great tee to green performance, thanks to your review I found my new ball. Yellow of course.

Paul I regularly play with an older pal , 20yrs older infact he's 76 .
I got him to try the srixon soft feel they are a low compression ball we both noticed a gain in his yardage especially off the tee his average drive with any old ball he had found that was to hard for his speed to compress was 150 yards. With the soft feel it's 180yards with his best of 194yards I double checked it with my range finder..his smile was priceless!...hope this helps..stay safe.🏌️😜

I switched to the ZStar when I heard the boys at TXG giving it good praise and using it as a default in the bay when I went. Not to mention the price in the US tends to be on the lower end for premium balls. It suits me and I love it. It tends to be a bit lower spin vs the TP5 or Prov1 and given my swing type that benefits me! Solid balls and nice test!

The great thing about Z-Star and Z-Star XV is that they're already significantly cheaper than other balls in that category.
In Australia we're talking about anywhere from $20-30 cheaper than Pro V1, TP5, new Chrome Soft etc. For equal performance. That's huge! It can get you into a tour ball at a mid level budget.

Very good test. I was using Z Star when I was playing well, but once I started to play more links golf I switched to XV. I felt that the performance around the greens was better for me and having a harder feel off tight lies was giving me more accurate feedback through strike. They are expensive and I won't use them if I'm not playing well (i'm not a good player) but getting a 4 for 3 offer reduces that price down to a more acceptable level.

I stopped playing in 2002 and went into golf blackout mode until July 2018. When I stopped playing I loved the softer golf balls (typically gamed a Top Flight Strata). First game I came back, the club pro sold me a sleeve of Srixon soft feels. I loved them! Over the last year and a half I’ve played the z-star and the XV as well as a few other premium. I now play the XV exclusively. On the course I just get better results with it. But I really wish it felt as soft as the Soft Feel does. Call me old fashioned but I much prefer a softer feeling ball.

The Taylormade project A was probably the best mid priced golf ball over the last couple of years so would love to see the new Taylormade tour responce which is the project A replacement up against The Srixon Q star tour and the Titleist tour soft. You could also throw in a some of the brands premium balls as well.I know you are not Taylormade's biggest fan but the project A was a fantastic all round ball and if the tour responce is just as good or slightly better it will take some beating.

Well done review.. just something to ponder... Us engineering types, and those who are just very curious, would like to see a cross section of the balls. Take a PVC pipe cutter and cut a ball in half. This reveals what a 2, 3, 4 piece ball really looks like inside. They are all very colorful inside and seeing what is inside makes for a very colorful, complete and fascinating presentation.

Nice job. I think a missed factor was ball cover deterioration. In general, I have found the Urathene cover material resists "scuff marks" better than Thermoplastic material covers? The original Q-Star cover would scuff up very easily while the XV was very durable.

The biggest difference in premium balls and quality budget balls in a dry ball test is peak height off of wedges. Premium balls spin more and keep a more "flat" trajectory. Budget balls tend to balloon really high. I guess that is to help higher handicapper get the ball in the air.

I think higher handicappers tend to have a lot of thin strikes and blades with the wedges so they are sold on the softer feel because it doesn’t seem like it will land as hard and roll out as far if they thin one.

Z star XV very good distance control. Left-Right dispersion minimal unless player strike induced.

I won a couple of boxes of z star xvs last year. Could definitely tell the difference once you got closer to the green. Couldn’t afford to continue to play them so have gone back to the cheaper ball. It changes how/what shots you play around the green.

Outstanding job Mark, by far the best ball review I have seen. Really like the way you presented the data. I currently use Q Star Tour.

Z Star for me. My choice for many a year. I do buy the previous years model though. Currently I can buy the 2018 Z Star for Australian $43

For me (I shoot low to mid 80's) I don't see a lot of difference in performance between the Q-Star Tour and the Z-Star. The Tour is good value. For a low end ball that is long, the Soft Feel is excellent. I've tried all of these except the XV. Excellent review. Just what I want to see.

As an older golfer with an obviously lower clubhead speed it'd be awesome to do a test of balls that suit this type of player. 🙏🙏

As a high (22) handicapper...I love a soft ball as it makes me feel like I have a decent swing speed and really 'compress' the ball! I also like a cheap ball so I don't weep when I lose 3 or 4 (or more) a round. I'd love to see Wilson DX2 Optix (ultimate soft ball) in your next test please.

For me Mark I am 3 handicap and love the extra soft. You think about it 3rd of the game is around the green. Just love that butter soft feel and I gives me confidence.

Would love to see a below $20 ball test. Srixon Soft feel, Callaway War Bird, Taylor made Distance+, Inesis, Top Flite Distance and Hammer line, Wilson Smart Core and Ultra 500 type balls. No one has done a comprehensive test like you just did in to all the budget balls and how the actually perform on a monitor. Thanks for the videos!

Excellent video Mark. Played Softfeels and then Z Stars for a period before discovering Pro V1's which transformed my game. Definitely seen with my golf mates ,who swing it slower ,that the premium balls give them very little gain and that something like a Softfeel really performs for way less investment

I have done a similar test after realising that my swing had slowed to take advantage of Taylormade TP5. I found that some of the soft feel were hard to control the distance when putting tending to spring off inconsistently. The issue of spin on the green never happens for most high handicappers and it’s better to play for a consistent run out after landing.

My guess would be that a large part of people buying golf balls are middle too high hcp golfers, that may not as invested to the game and therefor not willing to pay a lot of money for golf balls.
Its my understanding (i might be wrong) that lower compression golf balls are softer and more suited to the slower swing speeds whereas higher compression golf balls require higher swing speeds in order to gain maximum control.

I'm a 14 hcap. Strike is king for me. If I'm inconsistent then the performance of any ball will be inconsistent. love the vid and maybe this would be a chance to test with a higher handicapper and see if it really matters which ball they use.
