I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. As someone who suffers from GAD from time to time, here are some tips that I use to deal with my illness:
Strength training to relax my muscles. (Edit: And stretching thoroughly to keep tension from staying in the body)
Running/jogging to calm myself, get stress out of the system and improve sleep.
I go to sleep the same time every night at about 23:00 (11 P.M) and sleep for 7-8 hours.
I don't use light screens a couple of hours before going to bed, and I never use my phone in the bedroom. I always use the last hour to unwind before bed.
I drink decaff when I have coffee, especially later in the day.
I never drink alcohol to deal with my emotions. But sometimes I go out for beer and fun with friends. If I feel anxious, but still want to go out with friends, I drink non-alcoholic beer.
I seldomly eat junk food or processed foods, only like once a month (bad foods in excess trigger an anxious mood for me).
I eat a plant based diet, and keep my omega3:s high by eating lots of flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts and an algae supplement 3 times a week. Complex carbs, plant proteins and unsaturated fats with additional fruits and veggies seem to do the trick for my mood.
I meditate for about 20 minutes a day; sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on the day.
I make sure to surround myself with people that I can talk to about life, feelings and relationships. Most of my relationships are very meaningful to me, and gives me a lot of joy.
I do all the above mentioned things because they make me feel good. Sometimes I am less strict, but that always comes back to bite me, so I accept that my life needs to be somewhat structured around a healthy lifestyle for me to feel my best.

I've been going through severe anxiety with things going on in my life, so I started running. After my first run, I felt like I had lifted several weights off my shoulder and had taken a sedative! I was so calm, it was amazing.
@@PringlesOriginal445 I have had the same experience. It really works to get anxiety out of the system. Just be careful so that you don't use running as a way to flee from the anxiety, because trying to flee often make it worse.

@@graemegeorgeharrison2468 Hi Graeme, you've already taken the first step! Recognizing you have negative thoughts that are impacting your quality of life AND you're here! Mindfulness techniques can help you to dis-identify with your thoughts. Just because you have negative thoughts (and I'm pretty sure we all do) you don't have to believe them. Most of our negative beliefs were indoctrinated into us growing up. That's not to blame others, just to know where it stems from so you can forgive it and stop the cycle. Good luck in your self-development journey!

Solutions shared in the video (start at 10:40, you have to learn to soothe your body because emotions act out physically):
1. Prioritise your sleep
2. Allow emotions to pass through your body rather than holding them up inside of you
3. Take a few long, steady, belly breaths
4. Focus on the area that feel tense and move it
5. Exercise
6. Nutrition
7. Yoga
8. Posture
9. Smiling
10. Progressive muscle relaxation
Before those, starting at 5:55, she mentioned evidence-based body work like somatic experiencing therapy or EMDR. And along with progressive muscle relaxation, she mentions body scan exercise, and she has videos on these.
She also has a whole sleep hygiene playlist.
And in this series we're commenting on, the next four or five videos demonstrates more skills to clear away emotions trapped in the body.
She mentioned actual physical exercise and improving diet as well.
Yeah emotions cause a physiological response in the body
Six years ago I found out my mother had terminal cancer. A week after that shock, I learned that my husband had been having multiple affairs. After my mother passed away 10 months later, I learned I had breast cancer. Given the incredible stress, shock, and grief from that time period, I am not surprised that I got breast cancer. My holistic doctor asked me “who’s been blocking your femininity?“ It was an interesting journey exploring my emotions in order to understand my cancer better. There is definitely a connection between emotions and physical health.

i definitely have a strong reaction to being angry or being tired.
Getting good sleep is not an easy solution. Some sleep issues are related to ptsd, and fixing that is deep, intense work that takes time.

I had a therapy session once where I was able to recall my father hitting me with a rake and breaking the handle on my legs. I told the therapist about it and how it didn't hurt but the rake handle broke. After the session ended I couldn't walk, my legs hurt like I had been hit.... 30 years before.

If it wasn’t for the gym I think I would have completely lost my mind years ago. Through these covid lockdowns I’ve had to find alternatives.
I hate it when people judge me & assume I’m arrogant or have a big ego. The gym & exercise is my personal form of meditation. When I walk through those gym doors all my troubles are left behind. This and music are my two main staples for warding off anxiety.

As a former Massage Therapist turned Addictions counselor, I can see all of this up close and personal. I share this info with my clients so that they can develop a different understanding about why they do and feel things. Great video.

i feel my emotions deeply physically. anger in my chest but my whole body heats up, frustration in my head of course, and most negative emotions in my stomach because I have Crohn's disease. I've been working on regulating them because I dont need every bad event to rile me up. Its hard but its definitely better than dying from stress.

Solidarity Sister. I had the same problem too. It does take time and lots of practice to calm yourself and use a thinking approach to problem solving than an emotional one. It is so worth it though. :-)
I used to have crohns disease too....tons of intestinal problems. I moved to africa with natural food and healthier society...i have put on 30 healthy pounds of muscle and my stomach problems have gone away- i feel so fortunate after suffering for 28 years...i have never felt better
Great reminder. Thanks for sharing your experience. I've had chronic digestion problems my whole life but never as serious as Crohn's. I don't have a proper diagnosis because doctors couldn't work out what was causing it, but it's similar to your experience. I'm facing a very stressful time at the moment, so your reminder about regulating emotions in order to rest and resolve pain and inflammation in the gut. I find eating all my food prepared at home rather than eating out and keeping my diet nutritious and simple helps, along with walking (especially in nature), yoga stretches and some Qiguong movements 🙏
My emotions present in my colon. Wherever I go, I make sure I know where the bathroom is! But my ongoing therapy has improved this reaction tremendously.

@@angelfi My therapy has been targeted to helping me heal from CPTSD codependency. It involves making me aware of my tendency to put others needs before my own. I have received the best help from these videos on You Tube.

@@FaCiSmFTW The emotions if fear and confusion arising from emotional and psychological abuse. Four years ago I divorced my husband of 40 years, entered psychotherapy, and am doing so much better. I don’t recommend abuse as a cure for your constipation!!🤨
I’ve been living with a neck and shoulder pain since 2015. At that Time I had the opportunity to reveal a traumatic secret to my mother but I didn’t. Now I have this opportunity again. And I feel anxious, guilty.
FINALLY. I’ve listened to so many coaches and thought leaders about top down approach. But as someone who is in chronic pain I’ve been waiting to learn the information about how my body and the pain affects my thinking:) it’s been so frustrating to try to ‘just’ change my thoughts when they’re coming from signals in my body. so I’m loving this new information!
Ember, have you tried EFT (tapping) for your chronic pain? Tapping has been studied and proven effective for many issues, including pain. Nick Ortner has a book out “The Tapping Solution for Pain Relief” you may wish to check out.
EMDR was very effective for me.
I encountered the bodily experience of emotion when one I found one of our pregnant goats in the morning who had died in the night. At first I didn’t know what to feel but after a while my feet were numb and I was crying in place. The feeling of numbness from my feet up to my legs was most notable when waves of sadness washed thru my heart. Thanks for this video, I think your course is going to change the world.

When my feelings of abandonment are triggered, my heart chakra hurts really, really badly.
You speak of the evidence for emotional energy being stored in the body an not being researched/proven by scientific study at this point, but it is 100% true, and shows up as disease, in epigenetics and the energy body. Some day science will catch up.
For many years while with my ex I thought I had cancer in my abdomen and my heart hurt. My stomach became sensitive like his. Also, one weekend while my ex husband left to Vegas, I got hives on my face. He always made me sad, angry, lonely, threatened, scared, anxious, depressed, suppressed, oppressed, despair, etc.
I get blotchy hives on my neck and face when I get upset or anxious also, best of luck to you.
If you really thought you had cancer you could have gotten a scan of your abdomen and found out there was nothing sinister there. With chronic or acute abdominal pain It's important to rule out any underlying medical issues like gall stones, liver disease, coeliac etc

So glad I found this video today, I am just beginning to explore trapped emotions and the physical manifestations in the body. I have fibromyalgia and believe this started after a traumatic event in the family which has not been processed at all, along with living with long term stress and fear and a lifetime of looking after others before myself. It's really funny and how simple it is to just remove coffee/caffeine and see your anxiety almost disappear. You think " that's just too easy " but it's true!! You don't have to give it up forever but it is often the push that pushes our frazzled nerves over the edge. The whole psychological process of feeling needy and using a substance to change our shitty emotional state. Everything will get better folks just get out of the way and stay out of the way because the Lord is making everything in our lives better if we only trust and develop patience.
Yep. I finally got rid of all caffeine 6 weeks ago which means coffee, chocolate, and any kind of caffeinated tea. It takes some time for the body and brain to repair and restore normal function but it's so worth it. I'm much more relaxed, sugar cravings are gone, and my digestion is better.

I really appreciate your videos, they are so helpful. I experience anxiety frequently and I notice that very often I also assume that I am an anxious person and also act on it like that, and I find that this actually makes my anxiety worse.

And through nutrition you can improve mental health via the gut brain axis. The gut microbiome communicates directly with the brain releasing an array of chemicals and influences inflammation too. Diet is key to good mental health, this is often overlooked.
It sure is!! I had western medical doctors make me worse and give me tons of anti-depressants and meds for fibromyalgia. When I healed my gut, my mental health, pain and overall health got so much better
The psychosomatic effect was verbalised by the ancient Greeks centuries ago.

I'm really excited to learn more about the mind-body connection. I do a lot for my mental health but it's very hard for me to release the knot in my stomach that I've had since childhood. I also carry a lot of muscle tension in my neck, shoulders, and pelvic floor. I always hoped that treating my anxiety and depression would help my body, but I'm open to the idea that it really goes both ways. Thanks and I'm looking forward to the next video! 💚

When I get depressed and anxious i through up and I have pain going through my whole body. I haven't felt like that in a very long time, thank God, because He has been helping me finding myself and how to balance my emotions.

Thanks for clear and really helpful information. Using the senses to distract or soothe the body also helps to calm the nervous system. Smelling lemon balm or vanilla scent, cheeing gum or peppermint, sipping herbal tea, looking for three red/blue/green items, tapping or squeezing areas of the body/clenching and unclenching, listening to sad/soothing or lively music can alter the mood and release emotions. Body work and journaling have now been integrated into trauma treatment along with standard talk therapy.

Why did I not get taught this 20 - 30 years ago - 50 years ago ! Its never too late right but geez so much good stuff around now on channels like this to help people like me who needed it since I was like a kid ! I have ended up bed ridden from pain and fatigue - this stuff - emotional stuff and unresolved childhood trauma issues can def incapacitate your physical body.

Another great book on the mind-body connection is The Body Heals Itself. Some of the concepts might be too "woo" for some people (like chakras, essential oils, and crystals), but there are a lot of practical exercises for releasing tension in the body and a lot of anecdotal evidence of the mind-body connection.

Compassionate self talk and soothing rhythmic breathing done together will help to achieve a top down and bottom down approach. The body and mind will be soothed simultaneously.

I am beginning to learn that my face/skin flares when I hold onto anger - do not let it go/express it. Also, my jaw gets tight, sometimes my back aches. This is real. Thank you for this video. It's very validating and insightful.

Hi, I hope you still read these comments because I want to tell you that I have learned so much in such a short time form your sessions. I have a master's in community counseling which I have never used because I felt at the time (1998) that the field didn't have a lot of answers for clients who were suffering from mental illness. Had I known then, what you are teaching now, I would not have hesitated to enter the field. I knew about biofeedback from the 1970's, but did not apply it daily like you recommend strengthening the "calm muscles". I have been practicing most of you suggestions and for the first time in a long time I feel so much calmer and confident that I can tackle life once more. Thank you for making these skills available to us common folks.

Love that you posted this!!! I have almost recovered from CFS, Fibro and other illnesses with mindbody work alone (healthy eating and exercise also but this was not what helped heal this illnesses)--most people think they are stuck with these illnesses.

This past weekend on what was supposed to be a short family trip to see close friends and then visit a brand new grand baby resulted instead with being locked away in a dark hotel room for days in complete emotional freeze mode crying, sweating and sick. Everyone enjoying the two day visit with out me. No calming techniques worked. All I could do was sleep. I was embarrassed and confused and could not understand why I couldn't just power through a few days.
It wasn't until I got home and a day or so later when my anxiety finally broke and I realized what had really happened. Now your explanation made sense.
I remember being home and laying in my own bed thinking to myself that I'm safe, I'm home, I'm ok so what am I really afraid of?
It was at the exact moment, I allowed myself to feel the pain I had set aside that my mind cleared and the anxiety left.
You see it was only a few weeks earlier that I had suffered the loss of my beloved golden retriever Annie. Is only a few months earlier that I had to put my precious cat to sleep as well. The bottom line is there had been a lot of emotional things I was dealing with. I was pushing aside my emotions to get things accomplished and go on this trip but wasn't able to give myself time to gather my thoughts and properly grieve.
The way we try to avoid feeling the emotions we need to feel is what literally makes us sick.
