    Great video here man!!! Im 210 and noticed when I sat in the center while driving(awkward) my buddies side console jonboat picked up 3-4 mph, so my new 1436 is going to have a small custom center console instead of the side console they make for it. Heres what Ive learned in 35 years of rigging boats: Jackplates are great, start with cav plate even with the bottom as your center point and youll be able to adjust. A hydrofoil will plow and slow you down anything below even with the bottom, they really are only good to improve holeshot and reduce stern dig on takeoff so you dont bottom out in shallow water. Jackplates and hydrofoils fight each other unless youre jacked even with or above the bottom of the stern. Another thing is small outboards dont always have any steering offset turn fin which means some of your thrust goes off to the side a bit. Also put a little more weight up front if you can, what really limits jonboats is everything that ends up in the stern being hard to overcome with little weight in the bow. Once you get all that right then choose a pitch that works for your setup and needs. Tight lines brother!!!

      Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I will try your tips. I have been thinking of removing my hydrofoil, as it has not really improved anything but maybe holeshot. I appreciate you insight.

    I bought an aftermarket power trim for my 25hp which have on a 14’ Carolina Skiff and it made an incredible difference on the boats performance. Allows you to trim it down when you need to pick up two people and then trim it out to get that optimum top speed performance. I’ve seen 30mph out of mine and run 27-28 with me and my wife in the boat. Panther is the product I went with from BassPro. Around $600 I believe it was. But I feel it’s worth the money if you’re using your boat a lot like I do. I’m on the coat though and I use mine to run really shallow back waters. So trim is almost mandatory for me. Great video by the way. Very detailed and well done.

      Thanks glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah I'm thinking that a 25hp 30hp would really help with performance. I have purchased an on-the-fly adjustable Jackplate and it has helped alot, still seeing about 23 mph by myself, not sure why I'm not running faster even when by myself or while adjusting the height while underway, I can only assume I need to go to a 11 pitch prop from my 10 pitch or increase the horsepower. The boat I plan to purchase in the future is a Carolina Skiff, I love the layout of those boats.

    Good analysis and smart approach to your tests. Search some forums on weight balance for that boat. You may be able to redistribute the fuel tank and battery for some improvement. Also, replace any wood with aluminum sheets. Another option is to add the transom tubes on each side. Good job. I have the 20 hp and worked on similar performance ideas. Good motor and extremely fuel efficient.

    I completely missed the fact you were running a long shaft in the beginning of the video. But I bet you'll get more top speed by a long shot if you switched to a short shaft and a jack plate

    • @fishingistherapy

      What's the difference between the short and long shaft in performance at 20hp?

    • @TheCaptainkyka
      @TheCaptainkyka 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@fishingistherapy having more shaft in the water adds a bit more drag. I run flats boats/skiffs. Ideally want your cav plate hanging right flush with the bottom of the boat for optimal performance/speed. Having hyrdrolic jack plate coupled with electronic tilt and trim let's you get the most out of it if possible. I do still love how detailed you were with all your tests you've done. But if you're looking for performance, that's what I've found to be best with smaller 14-18' skiffs and Jons

    • @TheCaptainkyka
      @TheCaptainkyka 8 месяцев назад +1

      The electronic tilt trim and hyrdrolic jack plate let you get that adjustment on the fly. You lost a bit of speed with the hydrofoil, but gain stability and plane better given your application. You're working with what you got and that's respect my dude 💪🏼

    • @fishingistherapy
      @fishingistherapy  2 месяца назад +1

      I agree, I have a 14ft, but a 30hp would be alot by myself at WOT, my major concern is by myself with my 10 pitch prop I see 23 mph which is great, but when adding a buddy its 18-19 mph but with 2 buddies or my wife an kids the motor struggles to reach proper rpms and barely gets to 13-14mph and starts making struggling noises and skipping sounds. If I could solve that issue with a 30hp I would be more then pleased. But maybe a 25hp could add the addition horsepower I need.

    Do you think there will be much difference between 11.5 vs 10 pitch prop? Mine came with 11.5....I ordered 10 pitch for faster planning, on 150lb inflatable, but I wonder if itll be any difference, or if I should of went with 9 pitch, also are you still using hydrofoil? Or did you removed it? Is hydrofoil worth it?

    • @fishingistherapy
      @fishingistherapy  3 месяца назад +1

      I think every pitch you go down helps alot. I went from a 10p to a 9 pitch when I have a heavy load and it helps me get out of the hole and plan faster. I think going from and 11.5 to a 10 will be a difference. You will definitely see you rpms change. Also I still run the hydrofoil. I saw a stern rise with a heavy load after install and it helps me turn much better and have greater control. I didnt see mph increase I believe the pitch of the prop and weight distribution along with outboard horse power have more to do with speed.

    • @fishingistherapy
      @fishingistherapy  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes, with my specific setup, a 9 pitch prop is recommended which is what I have been running but I still feel my 20hp is ama little under powered to push 3 ppl well, my outboard gets sluggish and barely hit 14mph with 3 buddies, but with 2 buddies im at 18-20 mph depending on wind. I buy the Solas props and they havr been very reliable.

      @fishingistherapy thank you, thats what ive experienced with my 20hp on inflatable. I was already thinking to try 7 pitch to see if it can pull 3 people, do you think 7 pitch will make a difference in planning with 3 ppl?

    • @ia6980
      @ia6980 4 месяца назад +1

      @fishingistherapy another qs, one of tohatsu recommended props is 9.2x7 all i could find was 9.25x7 ...do you know if .25 makes a difference?

    • @fishingistherapy
      @fishingistherapy  4 месяца назад +1

      Yes the 7 pitch will get you initial power and hole shot to get on plan but you will lose rpms and top end speed, but I believe the 7 pitch could work well for 3 ppl.

    • @fishingistherapy
      @fishingistherapy  4 месяца назад +1

      I think that refers to blade pitch angle and shouldn't make a difference. I use 9.25 on my outboard and I dont notice a difference, so you should be fine.

    Move your motor up until the cavitation plate is level with the bottom of the boat. On my boat it has a kick plate that has about 4inchs of setback and my cavitation plate is 2 inches above bottom of boat. You want the hydrofoil just above the water when your on plane!

    I have a small inflatable dinghy 9.9hp 2-stroke and I am trying to get maximum pulling/towing torque while starting in the water. I dont care about top speed, but I need grunt power at startup. What type of prop might you recommend ?

    • @fishingistherapy
      @fishingistherapy  4 месяца назад

      To make up for the initial flex that an aluminum prop will produce I recommend a stainless steel prop. I also recommend going down a pitch or two to increase "hole shot" which is what your referring to as pulling and towing power. Not sure what prop you have now, but from my understanding you go down in pitch lets say from a 10p prop to a 9p prop. When I have a heavy load I use a 9p and when by myself with a light load to increase top speed I go with a 12p.

      @fishingistherapy boat looks little heavy- Move your seat little more to center - Your body weight causing more drag pressure on starboard side - Get lithium motorcycle crank battery- Run 3 gal. Vs 6gal fuel tank- - Distribute gear weight best you can more forward for the best level of hull - Good to look at mud or residue line on side of your hull- Ic boat & trim is set up properly Yiu shouldn't need the fin which is extra drag- Back of boat too heavy - Deep cycle battery & fuel forward- You want cavitation plate about 1" or so above bottom but have to experiment- Use straight edge - These are just some ideas to consider - When I look at your boat It looks stern heavy & off center- Remember though it's only 20hp & that's fine but If I was going to power this size John I'd go for 25hp which would give more leverage for carry weight, speed - Good Luck
