    You need an 9.25 by 11p prop. Try a solas amita 3. They make props for tohatsu. Your rpms need to be at 5750 minimum to make a full 20hp . I know the range is 5400-6100 but you want 5750 or more. 12p is over proped.

    Weight really does make a huge difference.
    My ancient 5hp 2-stroke is able to push me, my son, and a loaded cooler/gear at 12.5mph… I have not played with the prop yet. I will tweak it a bit while I save up for a bigger motor.
    Saw a guy on another channel with his 1436 (what size line is) and a 20hp hitting over 30mph.
    All that being said… I just want a platform that moves at a decent speed to get me to my fishing spots. Even 12.5 is plenty for that.

      Yeah I have seen those videos, and would love to get that mph. I plan to DIY a tiller extension and move my seat more to center to offset the boat planning out. I believe this may be why I'm loosing top end speed. It never truly planes when myself and a buddy are in my boat but I get around 17-18mph.

    I’ve got a 2001 Lowe boat 1648 riveted with a 25 hp tohatsu and I run 22-25 mph depending on if I’m on the lake(rarely) or in current (saltwater flats). That’s with 3 people, 52 liter artic cooler and a 80lb thrust Minn Kota Terrova, 6 gal fuel tank. The 11 pitch runs about 5500rpm and my 10 pitch puts me at about 6150rpm but the 10 pitch runs like a sprint car. Don’t worry about a couple mph we all want our boats to go just a little bit faster lol. I run a lithium for the trolling motor. Expensive but worth every penny.

    I have a 4 m long Finnish made fiberglass boat from the 70´s. Pretty light. I don´t know the exact weight, but I´d guess around 100 kg. I´ve been playing with props and I get about 54 kph. Pretty much the same with a modified 12" prop and a pretty standard 14" prop. The 12" gets on a plane faster but revs out at close to 6000. 14" prop is a bit slower to get on a plane, but revs to about 5600. 20 hp Yamaha 2-stroke DEO Autolube from about -90 with the exhaust bored out. I think I´ll cut the 14" a bit and maybe modify the cylinder head a bit. A solid 55 kph with a good holeshot would be enough. I have trim tabs fitted and ran the tests alone with about 30 kg of fuel, oars and basic gear. Without trim tabs the boat is scary, but could do another maybe 5 kph faster. I tried it and almost tore the stern off. After that I braced it quite a bit more. With extra 200 kg I still get about 45..48 kph. But I wish boats would have two gears at least, one to take off and one to to cruise.

    Based on your RPMs, looks like you need an 11. With your 9, you were too high in RPMs, with the 10, you were right on the line, if you were to take any significant weight out of the boat, you would also be too high. With the 12, you're lugging the engine, which is terrible for it. Try the Solas amita prop, i just put one on my Yamaha 25 2 stroke and picked up about 1.5 mph over the stock prop, both are same size and pitch. You could also try messing with engine height, that makes a difference. Cook video man

    Once again a really nice video.
    Your boat looks great.
    Why are you so concerned with the speed?
    Try looking at the symmetry of your wake. That will tell the story. Also you talk about pitch but don’t mention Diameter of your prop.
    I think speed is for speed boats not JBoats.
    I would look at weight distribution, keeping port seat down (wind drag) and loading boat 60-65% on port side with your weight on Starboard side off setting it.
    Once again great video, be safe and forget the speed look for efficiency going through the water.
    Remember the wake should be symmetrical very important for efficiency and safety.
    Sir. My very best.

    • @fishingistherapy
      @fishingistherapy  Год назад +1

      Great insight and advice. Yeah my wake is not very symmetrical due to my weight. I'm concerned with the speed only to achieve optimal speed and rpms within the proper range. I have either high speed and low rpm or vice versa. My diameter of prop is 10.5in. I am working on weight distribution which changes based on passengers. I noticed the seat and drag it caused when I watched the video back. I will implement the load distribution more to the port sight. I have it distributed more toward transom and bow. Appreciate all you said and will take it all in. Thanks.

    @bobsmalls100 Год назад +2

    Are you running a lead acid battery up front for your trolling motor? If so you might want to consider a lithium as it will greatly decrease weight off the front. A 12v trolling motor only needs around a 60ah lithium for all day fishing. They do cost more but if you can bite the bullet on the initial cost I'm sure you'll see better speeds from your outboard. Tight Lines

    • @fishingistherapy

      Thanks great tip. I was thinking it had a negative effect on my performance. I have removed it since then and have same an improvement.

    Boat is too heavy. You need more power for more speed. I have 1436 with a 15 Suzuki that sees 24 mph just me (270lbs) and my gear. Besides it's a Jon boat not a speed boat.

      Your right. It is heavy but very sturdy, I will sacrifice speed for that, but if I see a good deal to upgrade the outboard I will jump on it.

      @@fishingistherapy I was also thinking that with you running the pin in the outward most hole, the boat should have wanted to porpoise. It seems like you have a lot of weight toward the front causing more the hull to stay on the water after plain. Maybe you could redistribute some weight?

      @@bryanwilliams4620 I need to try that. When I have a buddy in the boat, sitting in the back with me it struggles to get on plan, but when I have my buddy sit in the front it planes out nice and gets over 20mph.

      @@fishingistherapy That's sorta what I was thinking. If your buddy could sit toward the front when you get on plane but move toward the back or middle after you get on plane see if there is difference between the two. With weight forward, it will get out of the hole easier but after it planes out the front of the boat should rise a little then the RPM increase and boat goes faster. With weight forward the front of the hull stays on the water and plows along. You want to see water spray out from under your boat about in the middle. If it sprays out toward the front that's part of what is slowing you down. That's why big motors have power trim. Push the nose down to get out of the hole then raise the front for less drag more speed. I had a deck setup in my jon and it made it too heavy up front so I took it out. It behaved about like yours is now. I'm not an expert just my own findings with trial and error. If you're happy with your setup just go with it and try not to focus on how fast it is. I don't think you'll get much more speed with that motor. Good luck!

      Bryan that's makes total sense and is very insightful. Those are the things I noticed and have been thinking when operating the boat. I have realized changing from a 9p prop when I have 2 people helps alot and my 10p when it's just me or a lighter person helps as well. It's a fine tuning process but overall I get good mph for my uses and it doesn't stop me from catching good fish! So I'm happy.
