Great video! Im a 5th gen Floridian, my Dad had a hunting camp about 5 miles from Bear Island til the Government took ot for Big Cypress park. I was just a little kid but remember turning off 41 on the north side, dad rolling the buggy off the trailer and one long slow ride to camp. Good memories. Surprised there isnt a memorial for Flight 401. VJ 592 came down witin a 1/4 mile from where 401 crashed.
I do not know the exact height, but it's tall and I can tell you that there were RVs (some motorhomes but mostly trailers) in the camping area (you might see some in the aerial video I took). The dirt road getting out there is in pretty good shape for motorcycles, trucks, and probably most cars, but it would be kinda slow going in a Class A motorhome for sure (I have a Class A diesel pusher). Class B or C would certainly be better, and I really can't tell you much about travel trailers. I'm planning another camping trip out there in February 2021 and will try to remember to bring a tape measure, and I'll post a follow-on reply here, that is unless you beat me to it!
Okay Randy - I just got back from another camping trip at Bear Island (video forthcoming). I measured from the edge of the road and came up with approximately 18 feet clearance going under I-75. The center of the road has a pretty good crown on it though, so I'd say the clearance is something over 16 feet at the center of the road going under I-75. And even if I'm off by a foot, that's still 15 feet, so I think you're good. Again, I'm not sure what kind of RV you have, but but the first few miles of road are pretty smooth (gravel and mile washboards). Once you pass where 839 and 841 meet (no matter which of the three roads you take to get to that point), the road deteriorates a bit (deeper washboards and some wheel ruts from cars driving when it is mud). There's nothing "bad" about the road at all and it is absolutely passable in an RV, but I wouldn't plan on anything above 20mph. Also, not that it really matters, but the road is pretty dry and dusty (my motorcycle is a coat of white dust, as it was last year). The back of your RV and wheels will probably also be white powdered with dirt. The good news is that it hoses off very easy. And finally, much to my surprise, there was hardly anybody out there - lots of open spots. $10/night, make sure you have a pen to write with and an envelope if there aren't any on the check-in box. Good luck!
No, it didn't! But I've got the "Bear Butt" Full Monty now. I'll probably do another trip out to Bear Island in January or February 2021. I really liked how remote that place was. Plus, I really liked doing the Big Cypress National Preserve Loop Road on the way out there (just south of Hwy 41). Alligators right on the road!

Getting ready to head that way in 2022, so thanks for the overview.
plan on making the trip out there. Thanks for the insight, wasnt sure if it would even be possible to take my truck out there until I saw this video
Is prohibited the opposite of inhibited? Pro=yes
In=no
😅
Very Nice trip and information
Any Idea of the clearance for the I 75 Bridge? Looking to take my RV to Bear Island, need 13'6". THX

Nice video. I live down here and have seen some of those places, but not all. The mosquitoes are killers. Worse than the alligators.
It was great seeing Bear Island again! I used to hunt turkeys there about 20 years ago. Didn't your hammock come equipped with a mosquito net?
